Gibbs on Climategate: The science is settled
posted at 5:29 pm on November 30, 2009 by Allahpundit
Via Greg Hengler. The data’s in a dumpster and the analysts have been discredited, but the science itself remains pristine, my friends. When asked about Climategate last week, The One’s climate czar literally shrugged it off. Would the head of the UN’s body on global warming fare better? Of course not:
Pachauri said the large number of contributors and rigorous peer review mechanism adopted by the IPCC meant that any bias would be rapidly uncovered.
“The processes in the IPCC are so robust, so inclusive, that even if an author or two has a particular bias it is completely unlikely that bias will find its way into the IPCC report,” he said.
“Every single comment that an expert reviewer provides has to be answered either by acceptance of the comment, or if it is not accepted, the reasons have to be clearly specified. So I think it is a very transparent, a very comprehensive process which insures that even if someone wants to leave out a piece of peer reviewed literature there is virtually no possibility of that happening.”…
Pachauri said it was not clear whether the wording of the emails reflected the scientists’ intended actions, but said: “I really think people should be discreet … in this day and age anything you write, even privately, could become public and to put anything down in writing is, to say the least, indiscreet … It is another matter to talk about this to your friends on the telephone or person to person but to put it down in writing was indiscreet. If someone was to say something like this in an IPCC authors’ meeting then there are others who would chew him up.”
A fair point. If you’re going to game your analysis to arrive at a preferred result, for god’s sake, don’t leave a trail. (Hence the dumpster.) But even if you do, per Gibbsy, it’s onward to Copenhagen anyway. Exit question for Pachauri via Mark Steyn: Precisely how many polar bears have your little cricket jaunts killed this year, pray tell?
Update: A brutal assessment of the significance of Climategate from Clive Crook, writing at, of all places, the Atlantic:
The closed-mindedness of these supposed men of science, their willingness to go to any lengths to defend a preconceived message, is surprising even to me. The stink of intellectual corruption is overpowering. And, as Christopher Booker argues, this scandal is not at the margins of the politicised IPCC [Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change] process. It is not tangential to the policy prescriptions emanating from what David Henderson called the environmental policy milieu [subscription required]. It goes to the core of that process…
I’m also surprised by the IPCC’s response. Amid the self-justification, I had hoped for a word of apology, or even of censure. (George Monbiot called for Phil Jones to resign, for crying out loud.) At any rate I had expected no more than ordinary evasion. The declaration from Rajendra Pachauri that the emails confirm all is as it should be is stunning. Science at its best. Science as it should be. Good lord. This is pure George Orwell. And these guys call the other side “deniers”.

Carol Browner is a liberal lawyer, married to a man who headed a socialist organization. She now prances around as “Climate Czarinna”.

If the “peers” who review the literature are all selected by those on one side of the issue, the other side will be silenced, which is what Phil Jones, Michael Mann, and others tried to do.

I think the solution does lie in taking full responsibility for a clear energy policy, but that’s not Cap-and-Trade.
Interestingly enough, to me, it’s embracing Palin’s ideas.
We need to drill locally, where it’s safer due to our own regulations. We need to invest in alternative energies. And we need nuclear power.
Pronto.
The liberal idea that it’s different if you drill “over there” is no longer making any sense.
Cap-and-Trade” is about reducing usage.
How?
It’s nothing but a boondoggle government tax, which is why it’s horribly unpopular.
Let’s do embrace the science, and let’s start really doing something that matters.
Let’s take control over our energy use.

I just posted this at Ace:
If something like this were discovered in a quality assurance audit of a nuclear power plant, that plant would be shut down. I know, I was at Tennessee Valley Authority in the late 1980s.
The CRU has been audited, and they failed, very badly. Everything done by these arrogant jerks and every conclusion derived from their work should be tossed. The future is too important to be determined by sloppy work driven by financial interests.

Well, if Obama’s science czarina and global socialist says the science is settled, then its settled don’t you know!
But I have a question, if “on the order of several thousand” scientists say that climate change is real according to Gibbs, and on the order of 31,000 scientists say it isn’t according to the press member, why does Gibbs just get to unilaterally declare that his side is right?
Restoring science to its rightful place indeed. And the rightful place is anywhere that supports my point of view, apparently.
I suppose that the head of the IPCC is one of Gibbsy’s reputable climate scientists…wait, what’s that you say? he’s an economist? Weird.

You are 100% correct, that is your liberal take.
One would think that perhaps the absence of data, and the conspiracy to cover up that absence of data, and the unexplained lack of warming in the last ten years might put just a tiny question mark on the, ahem, “science”.

I’m getting the sense that it’s really all bunk. I’ve always been very sympathetic to the argument that of course, a climate model shouldn’t be expected to predict short-term fluctuations. But if they can’t get the general trend over a full decade right, then they have nothing. They haven’t even had the ability to measure the global temperature for that many decades, so for their models to fail on this scale really makes them worthless.
People keep talking about some kind of scientific consensus. There is no such thing. A consensus has nothing to do with science. Science is about testable hypotheses. If you can repeatedly demonstrate that your theory predicts accurate results, then you have a valid theory. If you can’t, you don’t, no matter if you get a unanimous consensus from 100% of the worlds’ scientists.
RINO in Name Only on November 30, 2009 at 5:52 PM
