Video: Palin, like, totally pwn3d by Canadian comedian or something

posted at 2:47 pm on November 27, 2009 by Allahpundit

Via Think Progress, this one’s making the rounds on liberal blogs but even left-leaning Mediate can’t fathom why (“the video actually acquits Palin quite well”). The politics are elementary: She gets ambushed with a question about a boutique subject, i.e. Canadian health-care policy, and offers a boilerplate answer about carving out space for competition from the private sector (which is precisely what Canada’s been doing, when it’s not busy sending patients it can’t treat over the border for medical care). Ho hum. What makes it worth watching is the fact that the “comedian” actually got close enough to Palin to hit her with a gotcha question — and this is the best she could do. There are literally a million snotty/funny one-liners a talented comic could come up with for Sarahcuda — imagine what Robert Smigel would do with 30 seconds as Triumph the Insult Comic Dog — and these people, who are billed as Canada’s answer to The Daily Show if you can believe it, whiffed on all of them. Merely mentioning Levi Johnston’s bare ass in her presence would have earned an obligatory embarrassment chuckle, but they couldn’t even muster that. Never have I appreciated Jon Stewart more. And I don’t even like Jon Stewart.

This is Canada’s answer to The Daily Show because Canada is Canada’s answer to America.

Jim Treacher on November 27, 2009 at 3:00 PM

A Canadian asked Palin a question about Canada, she answered it, and now Canadians are enraged about an American sticking her ignorant Amurrican nose into Canada’s business.

Anyone trying to understand Canadians should start there.

Wondering why this is worth a HA posting. Could this be a continution of APs negative(?) infatuation with Palin? Just asking…

‘Real’ Canada are no different from America. They are hardworking sensible people. High Church Canada, the ones we hear, are something else entirely. HCC creates one of the more stultifying and least creative culture the Western world has ever seen. Every. single. one. is a mediocre f*ck that wouldn’t be given a cable access show if they were in America. Any one with talent, as we know, end up in America.

It is actually a reference to computer cracking, I believe. Back in the age of brute-force wardialing, the idea was that you could get so deeply into a computer system, it was as if you owned it.

“Pwn,” pronounced just like the English word “own,” comes from the idea that leetspeakers, or internet chatters, often hit the “p” button on their keyboards when they mean to push the “o,” right next to it.

jimmy2shoes on November 27, 2009 at 3:17 PM

What’s not clear about this segment is the funny. Everything about it is rather predictable, even the canned laughter throughout. What IS clear about the clip is the way that its been presented via many websites. The Huffington Post presents the clip with the headline “Palin Tricked By Comedian Again, Says Canada Should Drop Public Health Care.” Raw Story’s headline claims “Palin tells Canada to get rid of public health care.” Google News results on “Marg Delahunty” provide more examples.

Frankly, I agree with this blogger.

What’s funny about a comic asking a straight question? It’s a bit like the comic goes to the grocery store and asks the butcher for a steak. Upon reciving it, he says, “You’ve been punked!”

It’s way dumb.

AnninCA on November 27, 2009 at 3:17 PM

Wait, help me understand this, because I don’t. This Marge woman pretends to be a Canadian conservative, right? Then why doesn’t she stay in character, like Colbert? I mean, she can’t wait to proclaim that Palin isn’t a man of the people and that every word in Going Rogue is a “lie,” including “word.”

If that’s what the conservative character does, what do the liberal characters do?

That was not only lame but also incompetent.

Kensington on November 27, 2009 at 3:17 PM

This wasn’t even funny in the slightest.
This is the kind of “comedy” you get when the TV stations are subsidized by the federal government with tax dollars, thereby insulated from the workings of the free market choices of viewers.

Oh, Canada indeed.

Brian1972 on November 27, 2009 at 3:18 PM

Sarah just keeps racking up points to support her own thesis. The media really is caught up in PDS. Big-time.

Fortunately, I can’t imagine anyone in real life being this far out of whack politically.

They are just silently racking up the REAL points, which is to avoid believing much about the news.

AnninCA on November 27, 2009 at 3:19 PM

And as to everyone who’s wondering why this would seem funny, im guessing that to a Canadian audience, having a politician say such things would seem off. A full 80% up there feel they have the superior model. It would seem to them that Palin’s comments were electoral suicide…in Canada, of course. For the American audience, I can’t find any humor.

I hate to admit this…

I lived in Canada ~10 years ago, and this comedy show actually used to be quite funny. They were notorious for ambushing politicians. Even though this show was/is taxpayer funded, many times it was laugh-out loud hilarious.

But this?!? I agree with Allah. Whatever you think of Jon Stewart, he is head and shoulders above the rest.

thomasaur on November 27, 2009 at 3:23 PM

Guys, don’t insult all of Canada please. Especially over this. And especially you, Treacher, because you’re awesome and I don’t want to start dumping on you over this.

The show in question is really really not funny. And I know, because I tried watching it many times, but couldn’t take the non-funny. The producers/writers/actors are terrible. I’m surprised why this show’s still on the air. Anyway, its target audience, I feel, is the older generation who aren’t that sophisticated or up-to-date with current events and what’s ‘cool’, so their jokes are really blah.

Another thing about Canada, remember that many of the big name funnies in Hollywood are Canadians: Jim Carrey, Mike Myers, Eugene Levy, Ryan Reynolds, Seth Rogen, and many many more.

AlexB on November 27, 2009 at 3:24 PM

As a Canadian I can attest that This Hour Has 22 Minutes is staler that bottom jar biscotti. I am sure that its audience of eight on state run CBC will find it amusing. Yes, believe it; Canadian taxpayers actually pay for this “entertainment”.

4shoes on November 27, 2009 at 3:25 PM

Read the Mediate article. They boil it down to: if you hate Plain this will make her look more of an intellectual lightweight. If you love Palin this will be one more attack by the media. I personally see it as a woman who trusts others in her dealings. Someone who believes in the inherent good of her fellow man and isn’t full of hate and paranoia. While she needs to get a better sense of the left’s capacity for lies and illegal dealings, this Canadian comedy bit really is a non-issue. She said what you’d expect her to say in the brief moments of a busy book tour. Nothing embarrassing. I think the truly amazing thing is that Canadians expect her – or anyone – to know what their comedy shows are. I don’t expect anyone outside Chicago to know who Svengoolie is.

chicagojedi on November 27, 2009 at 3:25 PM

I saw her at the Columbus book signing and somebody told me she was a Canadian. Since she seemed so quirky, I assumed she was with a Canadian entertainment show like our ET or something.

Nice answer Sarah gave.

Uh, no. The WOW thing was an homage to the true origin of the term.

It originated in a multi user game of Quake where a player, who had just killed another player, tried to mock him by typing in the chat: OWNED! but he committed a typo, and it appeared as PWNED!, and he himself was mocked for it. It spread slowly and then like wildfire and became the standard mockery of someone you had just handily defeated.

No, simonsimple calls the younger Mrs. Bush a “murderer”, because she got in a car crash over a decade before she met and married Chimpy.

As for bookworms, Chimpy’s Air National Guard buddies all say that while they were off-duty, they were the ones watching “Hee Haw” on teevee, but Dubyah was the one off to the side reading history books.

But we all know Bush is even stupider than simon is.

Today, there are still people walking around who think that she’s that dumb.

Funny spoof, by some noname blogger.

This one?

Not remotely funny. It’s like they went to the Mall and bought a shirt and then said, “Hey, that idiot didn’t know us! We’re spoofing!”

However, if Canada didn’t export ass clowns like this ‘woman’ to meddle in political affairs that aren’t the business of your backwarsds, leftist paradise (kind’ve like you whining on an American political blog), they wouldn’t have to worry about being exposed as a nation of liberal, British/French wannabe hacks. Canadians hate freedom and free speech (just ask Mark Steyn), and you typify that. Your ‘fellow countryman’ (and who knows how longer that’ll be true) is here to speak freely, and can do so. You know, Allah, I don’t know how you cope with the stupidity and jump-to-conclusion-ism of some of your readers.

AlexB on November 27, 2009 at 3:49 PM

Easy. It is the button that keeps his shirt from popping, on most days.

Why some claim to be the editors of this site, even some of the great ones, is hardly ever understood.

Send in your tips. If they get used, be happy; don’t ever ask for hat tips (no one cares about them anyway); if they don’t, so what? Post your links and an excerpt, when/where they apply. No one ever stopped you from it…

Schadenfreude on November 27, 2009 at 3:55 PM

Even I see this as a “slam” Palin again thread.

AnninCA on November 27, 2009 at 3:48 PM

Why? She doesn’t turn out to be the butt of the joke … the so-called comedian is.

darwin on November 27, 2009 at 3:55 PM

What’s interesting to me?

Obama’s book sold 67,000 copies in the first week. Palin’s sold over 400,000, minus all bulk buying.

She seriously whipped his butt on book sales. Now, why are no “bloggers” pointing this out?

It was a pretty simple question I had. It took 10 seconds to find the answer.

Why is this not seriously being discussed.

And, btw, why aren’t real people who actually read being validated? Obamafans clearly aren’t book readers.

Palin fans are.

come on.

This is a blog. It’s all about slant here.

Yet, this is presented differently?

Why?

AnninCA on November 27, 2009 at 3:59 PM

Then send in a tip. There’s a mechanism for that.

DarkCurrent on November 27, 2009 at 3:48 PM

But is there an app for that?

Must be the joke of the day :)

Has anyone tested the water in NYC? I mean are they dumping medical waste, that could I don’t know get someone confused or high? Maureen Dowd remember writing something critical about Barack H Obama during the campaign? Really, I thought the only thing the New York Times missed during the primary was giving him a warm tongue bath…not because they didn’t want to – he wouldn’t let them :)

Wondering why this is worth a HA posting. Could this be a continution of APs negative(?) infatuation with Palin? Just asking…

docdave on November 27, 2009 at 3:06 PM

I think that AP is secretly in love with Sarah Palin and uses negative post about Sarah to hide his infatuation with her.

I’m not following you. The post title is sarcasm.

darwin on November 27, 2009 at 4:00 PM

Here’s my real response.

This “silly” story racked up 9,000 posts on a liberal blog.

Whatever is preventing this blog from really discussing what people obviously want to discuss is up to the editorial direction, of course.

But, I’m sensing that the “boss” needs more attention?

I can only speculate, of course.

But it’s way off the radar today, anyway.

Dave uses the royal “I”, as does his Messiah, Obama.

Schadenfreude on November 27, 2009 at 3:46 PM

Dave comes across as frequently constipated. He needs to use the “royal throne”.

Kind of like an elementary school boy hitting a girl because he really likes her?

*giggle*

You do? I’ve never noticed.

(I have nothing against Canada but can’t say I give a rat’s butt about whether or not they’d hold us at arm’s length).

Johan Klaus on November 27, 2009 at 4:00 PM

I am diametrically opposite.

I think it’s a business decision. I think Michelle imagines she’s in competition with Palin.

She’s not. But that doesn’t change the direction of the blog to recognize that.

You’re right. I’m too annoyed here.

I cannot believe my eyes on conservative blogs. The liberals are eating them up alive.

but, you’re right.

Jim Treacher:

This is Canada’s answer to The Daily Show because Canada is Canada’s answer to America.

Don’t blame all Canadians. Some of us are very conservative, married to an American and worship at the alter of Mark Steyn.

I’m just wondering why you think we care what Canadians think? Want to stay away from America? Maybe you should stay off American socio-political blogs, genius. And tell the Front de libération du Québec I said “hi”.

Liberals are in a feeding frenzy over something non-existant … a supposed punk on Palin that never materialized.
