Video: Palin, like, totally pwn3d by Canadian comedian or something
posted at 2:47 pm on November 27, 2009 by Allahpundit
Via Think Progress, this one’s making the rounds on liberal blogs but even left-leaning Mediate can’t fathom why (“the video actually acquits Palin quite well”). The politics are elementary: She gets ambushed with a question about a boutique subject, i.e. Canadian health-care policy, and offers a boilerplate answer about carving out space for competition from the private sector (which is precisely what Canada’s been doing, when it’s not busy sending patients it can’t treat over the border for medical care). Ho hum. What makes it worth watching is the fact that the “comedian” actually got close enough to Palin to hit her with a gotcha question — and this is the best she could do. There are literally a million snotty/funny one-liners a talented comic could come up with for Sarahcuda — imagine what Robert Smigel would do with 30 seconds as Triumph the Insult Comic Dog — and these people, who are billed as Canada’s answer to The Daily Show if you can believe it, whiffed on all of them. Merely mentioning Levi Johnston’s bare ass in her presence would have earned an obligatory embarrassment chuckle, but they couldn’t even muster that. Never have I appreciated Jon Stewart more. And I don’t even like Jon Stewart.

Palin states a conservative position of health care while she busy signing a book.
Big-time scandal there. Whoa!
technopeasant on November 27, 2009 at 1:26 PM
Huh.
Not funny. Biased and stupid, but not funny.
And nothing wrong or inconsistent with Sarah’s answer – let the private sector handle health care.
Man, they are really grasping at straws, eh?

It would be nice if they repeat her so-called history of being punked by comedians that they would also point out that the campaign had already scheduled that bogus call from Sarcosky. It wasn’t vetted properly by the campaign.

Up here in Canada we have a name for funny Canadian comedians, they are called “American comedians”. All the real funny ones and some unfunny Canuck comedians are living in the US making a real living.

The show “this hour has 22 minutes” is 22 minutes too long. I avoid it every time I can, and so do most Canadians.

As longtime commenters here know, I’m not a major fan of Palin. But I’m not quite sure what’s so scandalous or funny about this segment. She essentially said that parts of Canada’s health care system that have been socialized should be privatized.
Ha ha? Scandalous? It’s a mainstream position in the United States.

Clearly the Left continues to let Palin live in their heads rent-free. I don’t think any minds were moved by that bit.
The ACORN gotcha videos at least had a purpose as a public service.

So Palin was “fooled” because she answered a question for the “reporter”? What was she supposed to do? Was she supposed to demand press credentials and refuse to answer a question without them?
Oh no now I get it. She was supposed to know who this obscure Canadian “comedian” was and call her out by name. Yeah right!
joe_doufu on November 27, 2009 at 1:47 PM
“This Hour Has 22 Minutes” is a really not funny show. I tried to watch it many times to absorb myself in Canadian political humour, but it just keeps being not funny. It’s a big surprise, really, since most of the big comedians down in Hollywood are Canadians (Jim Carrey, Mike Myers, Rick Moranis, and many others … Pam Anderson too, btw). The Canadian Daily Show it is not.
The producers, writers and actors for the show are out of touch with Canadian youth, and with humour itself. Maybe that’s why they keep embarrassing themselves instead of their targets.
AlexB on November 27, 2009 at 1:47 PM
I wasn’t asking whether you consider her one. I was wondering why one can’t consider her an intellectual lightweight AND the victim of largely unwarranted media attacks…

Oh wait. It’s the other way around.
Ronnie on November 27, 2009 at 1:52 PM
Ditto what ‘poxoma’ said.
I’m sorry.
I didn’t even know this show was still on the air! Nobody I know watches it. It’s on CBC – only 9% of the population actually watches the channel, and only because of ‘Hockey Night in Canada’. They get $1 billion of taxpayers’ money, and yet they still compete with privately-owned TV stations for advertising dollars. It’s perverse.
You cannot say ‘private health care’ in Canada. We’ve been taught from birth that this is part of the Canadian identity, because it makes us different from the Americans. Thus, we must settle for mediocrity – as long as it makes us different from the Americans!
Once again, I apologize.
CanadianMelB on November 27, 2009 at 1:53 PM
Gov. Palin could ask for a glass of water and it would be portrayed as some kind of nuttery. While this tactic may work to classify her as an idiot to some, it will more likely boost the impression that she is being unfairly targeted. People who have serious questions about her qualifications should not be encouraging or promoting this type of silliness.
Cindy Munford on November 27, 2009 at 1:54 PM
The Idiot in Chief’s first/major state dinner was crashed, unprecedented. What a bunch of lightweights, and how risible for them and our country.
ernesto, no one was ever more “lightweight” than the kindergartens which are now running our country, exectutive and legislative altogether. We have discussed at length about using Rules for Radicals against the Liberals but haven’t yet. In her book, Sarah Palin discusses the similarity between the fraudulent Ethics complaints that forced her out of office and the ones that forced Newt out of office depriving the Party of a movement leader.
We need to start doing this. Start loding frivilous ethics complaints against every democrat member of Congress.

davidk on November 27, 2009 at 2:02 PM
Actually, Sarah Palin’s response corresponds quite closely to what is happening in Canada where the door is re-opening for some small return of private services in restricted areas.
What people do not seem to grasp in the U.S. debate is that once the government gets its hands on health care it will become an eternal debate among the political parties about tweaking the system, but true fundamental reform becomes virtually impossible.
The best U.S. example is Medicare which is way of control but anyone trying to touch its underpinnings with the fundamental reforms needed would never get elected, or stay long if already there.

I won’t venture a guess as to what underlies that poll response. Either way, a Palin position on health care in Canada would be electoral suicide, hence the humor for the Canadian audience.

Again, why the Canadians feel the way they do has nothing to do with why they’d see this as humorous. It’d be like watching a Nepalese Maoist come to NY to tell us how state ownership of the means of production would help us out of our financial crisis.
As for arguing for intellect, it was not my intent to get into a discussion of whether or not Palin is an intellectual lightweight; ddrintn made it about that rather than address my original comment. Having now brought it up, it seems hard to imagine a definition of ‘intellectual lightweight’ that wouldn’t include someone who all but admitted to pursuing little to no intellectual exercise.
ernesto on November 27, 2009 at 2:14 PM
Our founding fathers didn’t have Einsteinian pinheads in mind to lead our country. This is just an elitist absurd idea. Also, ‘intelligent’ is only what lefties deem to be so.
ernesto, I consider intelligent those who have read most, and attempt to read as many as possible of the literary classics in all of history, by the time they die. So what? They wouldn’t necessarily make good presidents.

True. We love to hate the States, even irrationally. (well not me, but most people I know!)
But it’s more than just that: I’ve never been seriously ill and I love just walking into the doctor’s office or hospital whenever I want and not paying a penny (and that’s not sarcasm). And the health care costs are hidden in our taxes so nobody is aware of what they’re paying and it does give the impression of being ‘free’.
But God forbid you have a serious illness and have to go to the States. It happens often enough that if you guys got universal health care down there, we’d be screwed over as well.

The IQ bs aside, strictly on healthcare…when our doctors go gulching, the U.S. will begin to vie for doctors from Bangladesh, along with Canada, Europe and Australia.
The lefties don’t know what they wish for. Live teeth drilling, nerve extractions, heart-condition waiting list when death most likely occurs before appointments, and etc.
In a very strange way I ‘wish’ it upon them because they know not what they speak of. Unfortunately then it could not be reversed. More important to fight its opposition now.
