Tiger Woods seriously injured in car crash? Update: “Domestic issue”

posted at 3:24 pm on November 27, 2009 by Allahpundit

Not our usual fare, but he’s the most famous athlete in the world and this is the slowest non-holiday news day of the year, which makes it darned near obligatory. Besides, there’s already intrigue swirling around the circumstances: Pulling out of his own driveway at 2:30 a.m., he hits a fire hydrant and a tree — and yet, according to the cops, there was no booze involved. Hmmmmm:

Woods, 33, pulled out of his driveway in the Isleworth community about 2:25 a.m. when he struck a fire hydrant, and then drove into a tree at his neighbor’s property, FHP reported.

Woods was transported to Health Central Hospital in Ocoee in serious condition, FHP said. No other information about his condition has been released…

FHP said the airbags in Woods’ Cadillac Escalade did not deploy, which means the vehicle was traveling under 33 mph.

Is he really in serious condition? His agent claims he’s fine and WESH says only that he suffered facial lacerations — although, according to the FHP, unspecified charges are pending. Hmmmm again. Stand by for updates, but in the meantime, an exit question: How do you lose control of a car so badly while pulling out of your own driveway that you end up playing pinball with not one but two fixed objects?

Update: TMZ: “As for reports charges are pending, we’re told charges could range from DUI to reckless driving … to nothing.”

Update: The Sentinel now says he was released from the hospital early this morning, which is hard to square with the reports of him having been in serious condition. The cuts to his face must have been awfully nasty.

Update: Yet another update from the Sentinel suggests that this wasn’t quite as bad as advertised: “FHP spokesman Jorge Delahoz said patients’ conditions are always classified as ‘serious’ if they are transported to a hospital.”

Update: A neighbor tells TMZ that he looks fine.

Update: Commenters were speculating earlier that, given the hour, he might have left the house in a huff after arguing with his wife and pulled out of the driveway with the adrenaline pumping. Speculation confirmed.

This is EXACTLY what happened.

The police know it, too. They are not stupid.

Let’s see if the truth gets buried here.

Well, Duuuuuuh! I told the hubby first thing today when I heard about this that it would end up as some sort of domestic issue. How serious, we probably will never know. It could have been a mild spat or a real beat down. Holidays brings out the worst in egoists.

di butler on November 27, 2009 at 10:51 PM

The last I heard was that he was assisted from the car by his wife who had to use a golf club to get him out of the car. Some how I think she might have been chasing him out of the drive way when he hit the fire hydrant and careened into the tree. What happened after that is pure speculation.

inspectorudy on November 27, 2009 at 11:03 PM

Did she take a picture during his backswing?

I wouldn’t mind seeing Tiger pulled through the mud. The guy is such a fake and we see it in his playing, he screws up a swing and he throws a fit like a baby, talks crap about other players and has never hit a bad shot in his life, its always the clubs fault.

Rbastid on November 27, 2009 at 11:24 PM

This is a curious thing to occur at 3 am or so.

Nevertheless I am glad he’s ok.

Leave him alone. He’s a good guy.

I will grant you the point on acting immature and slamming clubs after a bad shot. The other two comments show that you don’t know Tiger very well. At least “public Tiger.” I have never heard him bad mouth another player in an interview or blame the club for the poor shot. Tiger is pretty straight forward when he plays poorly. If he sucked, he will say that he sucked. He is a gracious loser also.

Mallard T. Drake on November 27, 2009 at 11:46 PM

drjohn,

I agree that the image we all have of Tiger is a good guy. I hope that is what is real, and not just perceived. I was married to a psychopath for 14 yrs. People that saw him daily would swear on their lives he was the nicest guy you’d ever want to meet. IOW, no one REALLY ever knows what goes on behind closed doors. Trust me on this. I hope it turns out this was just a typical pissy holiday arguement. They have children.

di butler on November 27, 2009 at 11:48 PM

Apparently Tiger has been using his putter with another woman and may have missed the putt!

His driveway.

“He was headed over to Fuzzy Zoeller’s house for some fried chicken and collard greens.”

**
This statement has always INFURIATED me! If Fuzzy was trying to be cute – it FAILED! Most people in the south and those who have MOVED to the midwest (from the south) like fried chicken and collard greens. This is NOT a ‘black’ issue – this is a ‘way of life’ issue for MANY southerners who happen to be comprised ALL COLORS! Of course, I guess, only Blacks would take ‘issue’ with this statement!

Money and fame mean the world to liberals! Notice how liberals want everyone else to financially support them and how they idolize the rich and famous?

A solider dies protecting his country and our freedoms, yet he/she is unknown to the country; a rich celebrity is rewarded for his/her ‘contribution’ of acting/singing, playing football/basketball/golf gets rewarded with millions of dollars and world-wide fame. This is what the liberals adore!

brendy on November 28, 2009 at 7:47 AM

This is such a non-story to me but I find it odd that according to reports his wife smashed out the back window of the Escalade and was able to drag him out of the vehicle and lay him on the ground. That just sounds strange. If only the front and back of the vehicle were damaged why not just open the doors? Anyway, I just don’t care that much, only wanted to point that out.

Urban Infidel on November 28, 2009 at 7:50 AM

This story is crap. Most likely she used the golf club on him for some act of douchebaggery, then started hitting the car as he drove away. Explains him being “in and out of consciousness” from a minor accident.

Hammerhead on November 28, 2009 at 7:52 AM

Urban Infidel on November 28, 2009 at 7:50 AM

Beto Ochoa nailed the scenario: Spousal argument, and as Tiger takes off, his wife smashes his rear window with his golf club, shattering glass and injuring his head/face; her action caused the injury/distractions that led directly into the collisions that stopped the vehicle.

maverick muse on November 28, 2009 at 8:18 AM

mavericmuse

Keeping that thought, why does one report say that the wife dragged him out of the vehicle through the back smashed window? Unconscious man, sets of back seats to surmount while dragging said unconscious man out and then through broken back window. If that is the case, she is one strong broad, and also managed to remove all sheets of shattered glass from the rear window pane before dragging him out and laying him on the ground. Why not just wait for the ambulance for a couple of lip lacerations? All of the ‘facts’ in so far are fairly preposterous. Also shattering car glass isn’t as easy as one would imagine. It doesn’t just fly everywhere, it breaks into sheets which largely remain in loose, but joined pieces. This also wouldn’t have created the injuries he sustained.

Urban Infidel on November 28, 2009 at 8:26 AM

Suddenly the term “rescue club” takes on a whole new meaning.

Potfry on November 28, 2009 at 9:48 AM

O.K., so basically TMZ has the story down as it probably actually happened- Big fight about Tiger’s screwing around, wife chases Tiger with a golf club, accident occurs, publicists were called, stories were concocted, story falls apart.

So what I really find interesting about this whole thing thing is how incredibly manipulating the press is! The lengths people will go to in order to “protect their reputations”. Pretty much anyone with an ounce of common sense could see that the “story” was ridiculous. It’s pitiful that I now look to TMZ and the Enquirer in order to find out ACTUAL FACTS regarding, (some) news stories.

I also find it interesting that Tiger Woods, who I honestly know nothing about, is immediately given a fierce defense by so many commenters here on HA- just because he doesn’t look like your average dirt bag athelete doesn’t mean he isn’t one. I mean, isn’t that how we all got fooled by John Edwards?

anniekc on November 28, 2009 at 9:57 AM

Boy, this was a fast honeymoon period.

Too bad.

AnninCA on November 28, 2009 at 10:33 AM

I would lay odds that the facial lats occurred before the accident. My hubby drives a new Escalade. Someone tried to break into it w/ a tire iron, and it took them at least 4-5 good swings to get the glass broken enough to get in. On top of that, unless both rows of seats are down, the chance of an itty bitty woman dragging her husband out the back just doesnt compute. Plus, if for some reason one set of doors dont open, open the other. I normally never speculate on stories, but like I said before, I have lived this one. Over and over and over. Hope it was a one off kind of thing, though. I dont give a rip about him or her. Just the babies. Its a very hard and screwed up life to put your kids through.

RedNewEnglander on November 28, 2009 at 11:01 AM

The story that his wife smashed out his rear window to get him out of the SUV was a bit idiotic, really. I wonder if she got a good wallop on his noggin. That would explain the driving skills. A fire hydrant hit? ok. But then a tree?

AH well, nothing to dislike about Tiger Woods, so whatever happened, I guess it will out without too much snark.

Indeed. The 24K lady has been demoted to less than 1K, since she made the stupidest comment on the thread.

Turns out that her idol stud is a supermoron who blew his uniquely hard earned fame into the wind.

To ‘smart’ 24K’s question “haw many millions of dollars have has you Obama earned by being the world’s best at something/anything?”, we can say that he has fooled the most people, domestic and foreign, achieving unique power and fame, based on zero accomplishments. Be proud, fool, by your own standards!

Schadenfreude on November 28, 2009 at 12:23 PM

Errrr – she broke the back window and dragged him out?

What non sense! Was the Escalade upside down? How could this petite woman drag 6-4 Tiger Woods out of the rear window of a vehicle. Other than the Enquirer and TMZ our media seems to have gone out of bounds.

Lets hope the Tiger was wearing a head cover.

Hello! Hey I’m coming down on Tigers side on this one. Where does this story say ‘Tiger Woods beat his wife after she asaulted him’. It doesn’t say that but it could very well have. So that fact alone keeps Tiger’s reputation in good standing with me.

Urban Infidel on November 28, 2009 at 8:26 AM

Actually, she smashed BOTH sides of the rear passenger windows:

Yesterday, police spokesman Kim Montes said both rear passenger windows on the luxury vehicle had been smashed. The car’s air bag had not deployed.

Source
.

I don’t buy the story that she used the club to free her husband from the accident.

She was clearly pissed about something. Maybe about finances or infidelity.

Regardless of what she was angry about, it doesn’t justify scratching his face and chasing him with a golf club and forcing Tiger Woods to run for his life which caused him to run into a fire hydrant and tree.

Tiger Woods is clearly a victim of Domestic Violence.

Men are just as likely to be victims of domestic violence as women. Here are some websites that contain facts about Male victims of Domestic Violence:

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out why he’s not granting interviews to police. They’d have to admit she freaked out, used her cat claws on him, he bolted out with her in pursuit with a golf club, and smashing the rear windows out. With that admission, the lovely Elin would be arrested for domestic violence no matter what objections Tiger had. He’d lose control, and that’s just unacceptable to him.

It doesn’t matter. Under Florida law, police have the power to intervene in a spousal violence case regardless of what those involved want.

What is amazing to me is that the wife has turned the police away two or three times preventing them from interviewing her husband.

I’m amazed that the police are allowing this behavior to occur.

What do you think would happen if a husband, who is suspected of spousal abuse, tried to prevent the police from interviewing his battered wife two or three times?

The husband would have been in jail ASAP.

Conservative Samizdat on November 30, 2009 at 12:35 PM

rollthedice on November 30, 2009 at 2:06 PM

For those who say, just leave him alone, it sounds like it was a little more than a domestic dispute. That is why the police are involved. I just hope that this will be a one time event that will fade into the public memory.

SC.Charlie on November 30, 2009 at 3:14 PM

I haven’t read all the comments, so perhaps this has already been remarked upon, however, does it not strike anyone as surprising that Tiger, worth a shitload of money and who is arguably the most recognizable athlete in the world, would drive around in a vehicle that did not have bullet proof glass? (or in this case, 3 iron proof)

Syd B. on November 30, 2009 at 4:11 PM

The old joke. If your in a lightning storm hold a 1 iron over your head becuase even God can’t hit a 1 iron.

Whats that got to do with Tiger getting his a$$ kicked by a hottie model? I dunno but its a cool joke.
