Black Friday poll: How will you spend it?
posted at 8:40 am on November 27, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
The Wall Street Journal reported earlier this week that the annual tradition of post-Thanksgiving Day shopping will be a critical moment for the retail business this year. A new survey indicates that this Black Friday will be less lucrative than 2008′s, which was no prize at all itself. The economy has not rebounded to the point where retailers can rely on free-spending shoppers to materialize at 5 am:
Black Friday marks the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season, but retailers still aren’t sure how strong a showing consumers will make.
New reports Monday didn’t paint an encouraging picture. The Conference Board released a survey of spending intentions that showed U.S. households expect to spend an average of $390 this season, down 7% from estimates of $418 last year. That number is especially distressing because consumers were unusually pessimistic last year as the financial crisis went into full swing just as holiday shopping was getting underway.
“Job losses and uncertainty about the future are making for a very frugal shopper. Retailers will need to be quite creative to entice consumers to spend, both in stores and online this holiday season,” said Lynn Franco, director of the Conference Board Consumer Research Center.
A separate report from retail-tracking firm NPD Group indicated consumers may not be flocking to the mall for Black Friday. Just 32% of respondents said that they expect to begin their holiday shopping on Thanksgiving weekend or earlier.
The WSJ quotes another analyst from Miller Tabak + Co as more optimistic. Dan Greenhaus points to a rebound in the markets and a recovery of retirement plans as a motivator for shoppers to part with their cash. The market may have rebounded, but the jobs have not. There are 3.3 million more people not in the work force since last Black Friday, and that’s 3.3 million people less likely to be shopping for holiday bargains. In fact, they’re probably not going to be shopping much at all, and at the rate people are losing jobs now, there will be at least 450,000 a week joining them, at least temporarily.
But that’s not the only thing that will hold people back. Higher taxes and fees in the future, as signaled by Congress’ expansionist efforts, means people will be saving more and spending less anyway, even if they feel secure in their jobs. The Obama administration and its allies on Capitol Hill have made it plain that they intend to hike the prices of energy, food, and health care over the coming years. With inflation eating away at the value of their money, consumers will be less likely to spend frivolously.
As for me, I never venture out to the malls on Black Friday. I worked too many of them as a retail employee in my youth to enjoy them as a shopper — and by “too many”, I mean five of them, which was four too many. How about you? Take this completely unscientific poll and see how your fellow Hot Air readers will spend today. I plan to spend it in front of the computer for a while, and then perhaps at the movie theater. I might want to see Dances With Smurfs, er, Avatar.

Unfortunately, I’ll be spending the “important” part of it in front of the TV watching my alma mater get beaten up by Alabama. Damn. Maybe a little upset is in order….
Of course, if the parole officer could be “encouraged” to pick up Alabama’s running backs, things could be different…

I’m at a hotel overlooking a major mall in the city I’m at and have been looking out at the parking lot since the mall opened 3 hours ago – it’s about a quarter filled. I’m probably as reliable as Rasmussen or Gallop: BUST.

Black Friday is probably my least favorite day of the year. It perpetuates the spend spend spend and then spend some more mantra that the media continually throws at us. The very same buffoons who cry about lack of affordable health insurance will spend thousands of dollars on crap they don’t need today and pay 23% interest on top of it.

Several years ago, I was out shopping for my parents and grandparents(not on Black Friday, mind you) and finally thought to myself, “Why am I forcing myself to buy something for someone who either can buy this for themselves if they had wanted it already?” Then and there I decided to start donating to their favorite charities in their names, and I have been doing that ever since. My parents and parents really do enjoy that just as much as if I had bought something. And for the of the crew I buy for, they ASK for gift cards. So I should be done by next weekend. I would recommend the charity option if you feel as if you are forcing yourself to buy stuff.

Most of the young ones are at the age where they would rather receive gift cards, Thanks God. The rest of the shopping has already been completed.

Here in Canada, things are a little different.
Our biggest sales day is Boxing Day (the day after Christmas) and for the week between Christmas and New Years most retailers are willing to bargain in order to clear out stock that didn’t sell in December.
This year my wife and I have decided to put of purchasing a new hard drive until then. In the past, when I didn’t have much money, we post-poned our Christmas celebration in order to save a few bucks on presents.
I worked a few of them myself. I was on commission, and I loved that time of year.

I haven’t gone shopping on Black Friday since the mid-1980s. The next time I’ll drive anywhere will be Sunday, and then only if absolutely necessary.
On the ‘to-do’ list instead are cleaning gutters, clearing out remnants of this year’s gardens, painting our daughter’s room, paying bills, making charitable contributions and spending time with my lovely wife!
Oh yeah, if any shopping occurs this weekend, it will be the ‘point and click’ variety.

That’s a stretch. Do you really see Joe 6 Pack having this conversation with his wife:
Honey I have a secure job let’s go buy a 90″ TV we don’t need.
Wife: Yes but remember dear there may be higher taxes in the future as signaled by Congress. Maybe we should save more.
J6P: right you are dear. We’ll have to make do somehow with the 78″ TV for now. Just don’t tell the neighbors or we’ll be mocked for having such a small TV.

Hopefully by then I will be showered and dressed. Black Friday to me is a day of pj’s coffee and taking my time getting going.

I really have not decided if I am going shopping today. Maybe if I get bored but I already started about two weeks ago to get ready for Christmas so I don’t feel “stressed” to respond like Pavlov’s Dog to the Media Marketing “Black Friday” hype. Besides “Jesus Is The Reason For The Season”
Does anyone else think it’s a poor idea to base our country’s economy on the amount of consumerism that goes on inside our country? I read something like 2/3 of our economy is just based on all of us buying crap.
I have not seen any bell ringers out yet but I am guessing they will be out now that Thanksgiving is over. I am always cheered up during the season, to see the bell ringers. They stand out in the cold and weather for folks they don’t even know.

My sister-in-law and I sometimes go out, but only because she has stuff to get. They live near Atlanta and it is fun if you don’t have to get anything specific. My brother is a Black Friday shopper if he has anything specific that he wants to get cheaper. Last year it was an HDTV. Then it was home to set it up to watch football.
This year we spent Thanksgiving by ourselves because my husband has a cold and we just don’t have a reason to be out and about. I spent yesterday evening on line shopping in my jammies. No crowds, easy to do, and I am almost finished. It’s a beautiful thing.

I hate traffic and hate standing in line so the magic of Black Friday certainly eludes me. I shop through the year and pick things up on sale and store them in a chest in my basement, so there is usually very little that I need by the time Christmas shopping season comes around.
Today is my 20 year high school reunion, and I’m on the committee, so I’ll be getting things (and myself!) ready for that, dropping kids off at Grandma’s for an overnighter, and then seeing how many of my classmates are still shallow and petty. Should be a blast!

According to George Will’s Scroogenomics we are just wasting our money!
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2009/11/26/scroogenomics_99316.html
Speaking of value for our money how about:
1) 2.7 Trillion in Tax Dollars for Federal Bureaucracy in 2009, including 612 Billion for Social Insecurity, 682 Billion for Medicare & Medicaid, the healthcare destroyers and 249 Billion of interest on the National Debt. 1.543 Trillion down the toilet. Rather than handing Seniors a government check wouldn’t it be swell if the dollars they saved for retirement were worth, oh let’s see…..a dollar, rather than the debased 1.5 cents they have become since 1913?
2) And speaking of paying interest on the National Debt, How about our “Monetized Debt” based monetary system? How’s that Monetized-Debt working out for you Americans anyway? It’s been a grand system for our pals over in Great Britain hasn’t it. Yep, destruction of civil society in one of the greatest civilizations on the planet is just about complete and it’s only taken 300 some odd years. America is heading down the same path just a few 100 years behind, but seem to be plummeting into the abyss of debt at an even more alarming rate.
3) And what do we get for, oh let’s see, for arguemt’s sake 6.5% interest on our entire money supply of say 14 Trillion dollars?
A) A money supply to facilitate transactions in our economy.
B) Bookeeping services, telling us who has produced and who has consumed.
And, to think all that only cost us 910 Billion dollars. Why we should fall on the ground and kiss the lenders feet!
4) Of course we could go the route of Abraham Lincoln and issue an entirely different type of money. Money issued without debt. Value based money. Greenbacks. Pieces of paper or electronic entries as symbols of real value i.e., Goods and Services. What a novel concept. Indestructible money that circulates in support of our economy performing functions A & B for FREE! Well, without debt. That means without 910 Billion in interest payments……per year. Driving inflation. Devaluing our dollar. Or we can just stick with the fragile Debt-based-money we use now. Constantly being extinguished as loans are re-payed and then recreated to maintain a circulating medium. Of course that’s if the lenders feel up to it today. Funny thing, lately they just don’t seem to be up to the task. Wilding an entire nation’s economy, is arduous work. Definitely not for the feint of heart. I guess they are weary from their labors.
5) At least lenders have recently managed to sock away 1.2 Trillion of M0 money or monetary base/reserves. Remember the Bail-Outs? I guess that would come in handy if there were to be a fire sale? If the economy were to really crash and burn. And the price of assets were slashed to 50% or 10% of their current value. I mean why leverage those reserves now, when they will be just the thing to have on hand when the big one hit’s. Think of all those deals to be had. Wouldn’t want that pesky working middle class to hold on to those assets. No, those guys are sure to waste those assets on such frivolities as their families, retirement, and healthcare. So what if they are the ones that created the assets in the first place. Bunch of plebes.
Nope, you are right George, great topic to write about. That 12 billion we’re wasting with our family and friends at Christmas is a huge sum. A real tragedy. The 1500 Billion wasted by our government on social programs that have not and will not ever work and the 900 Billion gobbled up by the predatory lenders, (is there any other kind?), just in order to have the prerequisite of a modern economy, ie a circulating money supply is no story at all. That the two, (Government and Lenders), have worked hand in hand to destroy the one shining beacon of the world, America, is nothing to write about. The 100 year rape and pillage of an entire Nation’s economy, no news at all. No, nothing to see here folks, move along, move along…….

This year we asked some of the ones we usually get gifts for if it would be ok with them if we bought gifts for hubby’s PGR children home, the group is invloved with, in their name. They agreed and we have already bought the gifts for the three boys. At our age, almost everyone we buy gifts for, have everything we need and it is a good feeling to give to those who would not be getting gifts. For us Christmas is giving from the heart as we feel it should be.

Well, going to the local pawn shop to see if they have any decent pistols that have come their way… then there is an ammo sale at the local sporting goods store, just in time for the season… hmmmm… guns… ammo… its feeling more like the holidays year ’round!

Drove back to East Coast from OK for Thanksgiving. In MO not far from Springfield, I passed a huge Tea Party sign planted along the highway. It was hand lettered with the words:
Support Freedom
Buy Ammo
Talk about a sign of the times!

sorry about your brother unclesmrgol. Funerals are expensive, even the cheaper variety. take a non-grieving “bitchy” person to the funeral home who can say “no” to everything the funeral home wants you to have.

Pawn shops are a great way to buy firearms. On Wednesday I picked up a stainless Ruger GP100 for $275. It doesn’t even have holster wear. I didn’t need another .357, but I knew I could easily trade it for something more valuable, hopefully a Mini-14 I’ve got my eye on.

My company gave us Friday off this year, and I’m taking full advantage of it, playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
