Obamateurism of the Day
posted at 9:00 am on November 26, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Happy Thanksgiving to all today — and what better way to celebrate this holiday than with a little historical turkey? In Barack Obama’s prepared remarks for the holiday delivered yesterday, he managed to miss the first Thanksgiving by 74 years (via HA commenter Buy Danish):
When my family and I sit around the table tomorrow, just like millions of other families across America, we’ll take time to give our thanks for many blessings. But we’ll also remember this is a time when so many members of our American family are hurting. There’s no question this has been a tough year for America. We’re at war. Our economy is emerging from an extraordinary recession into recovery. But there’s a long way to go and a lot of work to do.
In more tranquil times, it’s easy to notice our many blessings. It’s even easier to take them for granted. But in times like these, they resonate a bit more powerfully. When President Lincoln set aside the National Day of Thanksgiving for the first time — to celebrate America’s “fruitful fields,” “healthful skies,” and the “strength and vigor” of the American people — it was in the midst of the Civil War, just when the future of our very union was most in doubt. So think about that. When times were darkest, President Lincoln understood that our American blessings shined brighter than ever.
That Thanksgiving proclamation may be one of the finest in American history, and well worth quoting by President Obama … but it’s not the first. In 1789, George Washington proclaimed the first national Day of Thanksgiving — and it was on November 26th, too:
General Thanksgiving
By the PRESIDENT of the United States Of America
A PROCLAMATIONWHEREAS it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favour; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me “to recommend to the people of the United States a DAY OF PUBLICK THANSGIVING and PRAYER, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:
NOW THEREFORE, I do recommend and assign THURSDAY, the TWENTY-SIXTH DAY of NOVEMBER next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed;– for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enable to establish Constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted;– for the civil and religious liberty with which we are bleffed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge;– and, in general, for all the great and various favours which He has been pleased to confer upon us.
And also, that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other tranfgreffions;– to enable us all, whether in publick or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wife, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shewn kindness unto us); and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.
GIVEN under my hand, at the city of New-York, the third day of October, in the year of our Lord, one thousand seven hundred and eighty-nine.
(signed) G. Washington
So today is the 220th anniversary of our first National Day of Thanksgiving. Celebrate it with the ones you love, and be sure to keep this great nation and its leadership in your prayers.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Nope, I think you are wrong on this Ed. President Obama is the first President since Lincoln to even recognize Thanksgiving as a Holiday. It is truly unprecedented.
Happy Turkey day everyone:D

Thank you, Father, for having created us and given us to each other in the human family. Thank you for being with us in all our joys and sorrows, for your comfort in our sadness, your companionship in our loneliness. Thank you for yesterday, today, tomorrow and for the whole of our lives. Thank you for friends, for health and for grace. May we live this and every day conscious of all that has been given to us.
Happy Thanksgiving Ed, AP, Michelle…and all the HotAir-heads. You all are an endless supply of knowledge, humor, and debate. Wouldn’t be the same without y’all.

I’ve been reading presidential Thanksgiving Proclamations. Perhaps I’ve missed one, but so far, I’ve only read one that did not thank members of the military during a time of war, or thank God or even mention God. That one is from President Obama.
Thanks to all who serve our nation in our armed forces, for your dedication and sacrifices. May God bless you.
And thank God for the blessings we receive every day.

Trolls,
How do you celebrate Thanksgiving? Obviously turkey and mashed potatoes is too red state for you. So what…a little baked arugula with a side of non-fat goat cheese followed by a soy latte desert. And of course watching a football game is out of the question. So what…maybe break out the “Best of Barrack Speeches DVD Set” and relive the glory of 2008?

And don’t worry about the latest historical mistake, Barry.
1) It’s American history – not your forté, and

Thank God every day that there is such a place as America where we even have the chance to fight for freedom, to give it meaning and force in our lives, and to pass it on to those who come after us.
Thank God every day for all those who paid the terrible price to get us here. Those whose lives were forever frozen in the eternal youth of our memory and whose courage and sacrifice live only in our reverent thanksgiving.
Thank God every day for those who’se lives and fortunes and sacred honors are on the line today as we celebrate. Never in the history of human struggle has one nation been so honored by the courage and sacrifice of so many.
And beg the mercy of a just and forgiving God if we ever forget the duty we have to defend freedom at home lest we betray the sacrifice of those who fight for freedom abroad.

If it’ll help prevent more national embarrassment, I think I can have my 6th grade son do fact checking for the White House. He’s got a PC and access to Wikipedia…
But he wouldn’t fit in… at almost 12 years old he has more moral clarity on national security than the current administration. Heck, in 2004 he thought Bush should be re-elected “because the bad guys haven’t done bad things here again”. That’s a hell of a thing for a 6 year old to say in the USA.

Well you can’t be too hard on The Won, after all, American History probably isn’t taught in Indonesian madrassas. Actually most of America’s history isn’t taught in schools in the US either.
But on this Thanksgiving Holiday (Holy day) I am grateful for more items than I can count. I am blessed to have lived in what, despite it’s faults, is the greatest country in the history of the world during one of the most extraordinary periods of human history. I’m thankful for my many fellow HotAir posters and their views, even our resident Trolls and Lefties. (After all, if you’ve never seen the depths, you can’t appreciate the heights.)

And on Thanksgiving Eve, he gives a shout-out to muslims. Wonder how many America kids will not get their swineflu vaccine because they were sent to the muslims?
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2009/11/on-thanksgiving-eve-barack-obamas-special-message-to-muslims.html
Michelle and I would like to send our best wishes to all those performing Hajj this year, and to Muslims in America and around the world who are celebrating Eid-ul-Adha. The rituals of Hajj and Eid-ul-Adha both serve as reminders of the shared Abrahamic roots of three of the world’s major religions.
During Hajj, the world’s largest and most diverse gathering, three million Muslims from all walks of life – including thousands of American Muslims – will stand in prayer on Mount Arafat. The following day, Muslims around the world will celebrate Eid-ul-Adha and distribute food to the less fortunate to commemorate Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son out of obedience to God.
This year, I am pleased that the Department of Health and Human Services has partnered with the Saudi Health Ministry to prevent and limit the spread of H1N1 during Hajj. Cooperating on combating H1N1 is one of the ways we are implementing my administration’s commitment to partnership in areas of mutual interest.
On behalf of the American people, we would like to extend our greetings during this Hajj season – Eid Mubarak.

I can’t believe I’m doing this because it’s going to ruin my appetite, let alone the whole day, but…..Barry is “technically” right about the Lincoln thing.. Thanksgiving wasn’t technically a national holiday until Lincoln, in 1963, proclaimed it be celebrated on the last Thursday of Nov. And also, it wasn’t declared a federal Holiday until 1941.
And this is the “official WH release” of Barry Thanksgiving:
http://www.politico.com/static/PPM145_obama_memo.html
The quote Ed references is from Barry’s Presidential Turkey pardon. In which, as always, he can’t resist talking about himself.
