Happy Thanksgiving!

posted at 10:00 am on November 26, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

I’d like to offer a more traditional message of thanksgiving in this post, and wish all of our Hot Air community a happy Thanksgiving Day with their families and friends.  I’ll be spending my day with our extended Minnesota family.  My daughter-in-law’s family lovingly adopted us years ago and invite us to all of their family functions, and so we will get to relax with the whole crew over a traditional Thanksgiving meal.  They have been a huge blessing to the First Mate and me, and I’m very thankful for that.

Of course, we will be thankful for the phone service that connects us to our families back home in California, where Thanksgiving Day is significantly warmer.  I’m sure they’ll be thankful that the temperature won’t get down to the 41 degrees it will be today in Minnesota.  We will catch up with them this morning and wish them a happy Thanksgiving, too, and be thankful for the opportunity to do so.

What will be the blessings I keep in mind for today, and for which I will thank our Lord?  Of course, first and foremost will be our families and friends.  After that, as always, I will thank Him for the good fortune to live in this nation where men and women can be free to pursue their dreams.  I will thank the Lord for the men and women who safeguard that liberty and security, whether they be in Iraq, Afghanistan, on the seas, in the air, or in our local police and fire stations, ready to risk their own lives to secure ours.  That is an awesome and moving dedication that may be difficult to comprehend fully, but I am fully grateful for its existence.

I’ll also be thankful for this forum, in which I get to express my sense of liberty, The Boss who graciously allows me to earn a living while doing so, my partner Allahpundit, and all of the readers and commenters who make it possible.  It is such a blessing to be part of Hot Air, and the last six years of blogging has been a dream come true.  Thank you, all of you, and may God bless you and your families on this contemplative holiday.

I’ll try to take the rest of the day off, but if I get some cute video of the granddaughters, I’ll be back.

I’m grateful to know what matters now in life. I am grateful to know that 30% of people I meet in life like me immediately, 30% can’t stand me, and the rest aren’t interested enough to have an opinion.

Very good.

If you like mimosas, try “Blood Orange,” by Canella. Very delish.

Last night was a Stella Artois, tequila, cab sauv and vodka kind of night. Covered the bases.

Today is just a Stella and merlot day.

We have a handcrafted peach brandy liqueur from a very crafty friend, and a bottle of Maker’s Mark that I may attack later, but for now the Dos Equis are the most appealing to me. I have a case of Fat Tires in the basement, too.

The OJ for the mimosas was blood oranges. Very tart, just how I like them with the Brut.

Much to be thankful and grateful for today and every day.

I thank God for all “rough men ” (women?) who stand ready in the night so that we can sleep soundly, to paraphrase Orwell.

I also thank Him for all the motley crew of tea partiers and the rest who can throw together some resistance to the attempt to eviscerate our economic freedoms. Some of us our tied down by geography and obligations and we can only write and call.

Thank you!

Reminds me of a saying my irish bastard friend always uses in regards to alcohol

“my cup runeth over, and now i feel like ive been runeth over”

blatantblue on November 26, 2009 at 6:00 PM

Now thank we all our God
With heart and hands and voices,
Who wondrous things hath done,
In whom His world rejoices;
Who from our mother’s arms
Hath blessed us on our way
With countless gifts of love,
And still is ours today.

Oh, may this bounteous God
Through all our life be near us,
With ever joyful hearts
And blessed peace to cheer us;
And keep us in His grace
And guide us when perplexed
And free us from all ills
In this world and the next.

All praise and thanks to God
The Father now be given,
The Son, and Him who reigns
With them in highest heaven:
The one eternal God,
Whom earth and heaven adore!
For thus it was, is now,
And shall be evermore.

“I have sung this hymn on many Thanksgivings in English without realizing the significance of the hymn in terms of who wrote it and when it was written. With those things in mind it is especially appropriate for this time. In my Thanksgiving Eve Sermon I talked about how hard real thanksgiving is to find, especially in these times, of global recession, unemployment, and underemployment. In spite all we give thanks, even when our gifts are meager or diminished.

The hymn you quoted was published in 1637 at the time of the Thirty Year’s War. It was written by Pastor Martin Rinkhart at the time of an epidemic. He had buried 4,480 victims including his own wife. The second verse reads, “Oh, may this bounteous God, through all our life be near us. With ever joyful hearts, and blessed peace to cheer us. And keep us in his grace, and guide us when perplexed. And free us from all harm, in this world and the next.” Very appropriate, I say, in these perplexing times.

Credit needs to go to “For All the Saints” Vol II and those who selected this hymn as the Fourth Reading for this Day of Thanksgiving, with the note about the authorship and circumstances.”

Proverbs 31 (New American Standard Bible)
Description of a Worthy Woman
10An (M)excellent wife, who can find?
For her worth is far (N)above jewels.
11The heart of her husband trusts in her,
And he will have no lack of gain.
12She does him good and not evil
All the days of her life.
13She looks for wool and flax
And works with her hands in delight.
14She is like (O)merchant ships;
She brings her food from afar.
15She (P)rises also while it is still night
And (Q)gives food to her household
And portions to her maidens.
16She considers a field and buys it;
From her earnings she plants a vineyard.
17She (R)girds herself with strength
And makes her arms strong.
18She senses that her gain is good;
Her lamp does not go out at night.
19She stretches out her hands to the distaff,
And her hands grasp the spindle.
20She (S)extends her hand to the poor,
And she stretches out her hands to the needy.
21She is not afraid of the snow for her household,
For all her household are (T)clothed with scarlet.
22She makes (U)coverings for herself;
Her clothing is (V)fine linen and (W)purple.
23Her husband is known (X)in the gates,
When he sits among the elders of the land.
24She makes (Y)linen garments and sells them,
And supplies belts to the tradesmen.
25Strength and (Z)dignity are her clothing,
And she smiles at the future.
26She (AA)opens her mouth in wisdom,
And the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
27She looks well to the ways of her household,
And does not eat the (AB)bread of idleness.
28Her children rise up and bless her;
Her husband also, and he praises her, saying:
29″Many daughters have done nobly,
But you excel them all.”
30Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain,
But a woman who (AC)fears the LORD, she shall be praised.
31Give her the product of her hands,
And let her works praise her in the gates.

Reason # 3,094,215 I’m thankful I was born and raised in South Carolina!

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) – You can get a tax break this weekend in South Carolina if you’re shopping for a gun.

The ‘Second Amendment Weekend’ starts at midnight Thursday night. For 48 hours, you do not have to pay sales tax on guns bought in the state.

The holiday does not include ammunition or accessories.

This is the second year the sales tax holiday on guns has been offered.

Wapsie Produce, Inc. is America’s largest producer and marketer of capons. Founded in 1958 by Carl Nichols, Wapsie Produce is managed by his sons Marc and Paul; and his grandsons, BJ and Craig are bringing a third generation of growth to the business.

Wapsie Produce works with area growers within a 100-250 mile radius of Decorah. These growers raise Wapsie capons to 17-18 weeks when the famous blue Wapsie trucks roll out to retrieve the birds for processing. Wapsie Produce hand processes its capons under the watchful eye of USDA inspectors and packs under its own Minowa (Extra Fancy Grade A) and Ioma labels, as well as private label for selected companies.

Wapsie Produce also runs an experimental farm, locally known as the Capon City.

Wapsie Capons are shipped from coast to coast. This seasonal business begins each spring with delivery of the newly hatched roosters and production is staggered throughout the fall to meet the busy holiday demand.

We had the Minowa (Extra Fancy Grade A) capon. I splurged and paid $3.99 a Lb. I will get another for Christmas and deep-fry it, and serve it with the prime rib. Yum, meat.

I enjoy the discourse, opinion, and personalities here and the way things are run. Thank you all for your honesty and thought provoking posts, as well as delightful humor. I will also thank the powers that be for spurring the discussion and giving of themselves in such a positive way.

I am thankful for each breath I take and the family that surrounds me. It is very small, but we survive because of each other.

As for being thankful for what is happening to my country? One can only try to grasp the silver lining that, as the socialists and fascists in power try to squeeze the life out of the Constitution and the vision of the Founding Fathers, there are people like you and me who are awake or awakening and won’t let sleeping dogs lie. It is the one hope this country has so I will cling to it and be thankful for it. God Bless the troops. Be safe.

Happy Thanksgiving Hot Air!

When we were going around the table tonight sharing what we’re thankful for, one of my many things was “the Internet.” My kids said, “Yeah, you’d never make it throughout the day without checking Hot Air !” So true. :-)

You are more than welcome, as is the model. Just please don’t bring any libtards, as we are a God-fearing household that attends church. We are also big carnivores, so leave the tofu-eating-PETA-types behind, as well. Hope you like Yorkie puddin’ and mashed ‘tater’s.

She ain’t no lib, grew up on a ranch here and then a few years in Saudi Arabia when her dad got transfered there. Saw the “religion of peace” up close and thus has a special disregard for its darker side.

We’re both PETA types, of course — as in People Eating Tasty Animals.

And, Yorkie pudding, mashed potatoes… dayumm.

We use bacon grease, snipped chives and thyme leaves in our Yorkie popovers. You don’t need PAM to coat your muffin tins with animal fat. Just like Mama’s.

I am thankful for waking each morning, waking to my family, in Texas, in America, where I know I am free thanks to those who served and serve still today. May God bless you all.
