Happy Thanksgiving!

posted at 10:00 am on November 26, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

I’d like to offer a more traditional message of thanksgiving in this post, and wish all of our Hot Air community a happy Thanksgiving Day with their families and friends.  I’ll be spending my day with our extended Minnesota family.  My daughter-in-law’s family lovingly adopted us years ago and invite us to all of their family functions, and so we will get to relax with the whole crew over a traditional Thanksgiving meal.  They have been a huge blessing to the First Mate and me, and I’m very thankful for that.

Of course, we will be thankful for the phone service that connects us to our families back home in California, where Thanksgiving Day is significantly warmer.  I’m sure they’ll be thankful that the temperature won’t get down to the 41 degrees it will be today in Minnesota.  We will catch up with them this morning and wish them a happy Thanksgiving, too, and be thankful for the opportunity to do so.

What will be the blessings I keep in mind for today, and for which I will thank our Lord?  Of course, first and foremost will be our families and friends.  After that, as always, I will thank Him for the good fortune to live in this nation where men and women can be free to pursue their dreams.  I will thank the Lord for the men and women who safeguard that liberty and security, whether they be in Iraq, Afghanistan, on the seas, in the air, or in our local police and fire stations, ready to risk their own lives to secure ours.  That is an awesome and moving dedication that may be difficult to comprehend fully, but I am fully grateful for its existence.

I’ll also be thankful for this forum, in which I get to express my sense of liberty, The Boss who graciously allows me to earn a living while doing so, my partner Allahpundit, and all of the readers and commenters who make it possible.  It is such a blessing to be part of Hot Air, and the last six years of blogging has been a dream come true.  Thank you, all of you, and may God bless you and your families on this contemplative holiday.

I’ll try to take the rest of the day off, but if I get some cute video of the granddaughters, I’ll be back.

Blowback

Sniveling E. J. Dionne

Yet there is a lesson for the president in the rote quality of his Thanksgiving proclamation that is significant only because it reveals Obama’s underlying problem: What the document lacked was any sense of fighting spirit, any larger purpose, any gauntlet thrown down before his foes.

I’m thankful to God for God, for my children, and for the fact that I am still here and able to thank Him.

My dog’s lawyer is thankful for Cass Sunstein.

I’m thankful for Eric Holder. He is so fair to our enemies, it almost makes you want to be one.

I’m thankful for SC Gov Sanford, who discovered that the Appalachian trail goes all the way to Argentina

I’m thankful for Timothy Geither, who proved that even a Keebler Elf can make it big in the White House.

I’m thankful for Anita Dunn, whose bold impression of an iguana showed me a woman’s tongue is not always sexy.

I’m thankful for Whoopie Goldberg, who taught me the difference between rape, and rape-rape.

I’m thankful for Joe Biden for the warning – if hairplugs do THAT to your brain, I’m glad I’m bald.

I’m thankful for Barney Frank, who keeps us mindful of the never-answered question, why do so many gay men have speech impediments?

I’m thankful for Nancy Pelosi, who received the baton from Michael Jackson as a living example of cosmetic surgery gone wrong.

I’m thankful for Obama’s lack of class, which showed the world why DVDs shouldn’t have region codes.

I’m thankful for Sarah Palin, who single-handedly keeps liberals’ blood pressure at dangerous levels.

I’m thankful for affirmative action, which brought us our very first developmentally disabled president.

Daggett on November 26, 2009 at 2:11 PM

I’m thankful for Obama…….he’s shown us how much of a commie he is so early in his presidency that he may have killed it already. I’m thankful for Michelle (Malkin and Bachmann both), Sarah, Glenn, Sean, Micheal, Mark. I’m thankful for J.C. and Alan (Watts and Keyes) for showing us that we can be conservative no matter who we are. John Bolton is another one I’m thankful for.

Most of all, I’m deeply thankful for the grace of God shown to us through Jesus, our Christ and Savior, who grants us every breath we take and that he allows us to take up and smell the coffee each and every day. Thank you dear Lord!

A few years ago I took my son to Plymouth, Massachusetts for their annual Thanksgiving celebration. We got to walk through the original Pilgrim settlement and Wampanoag Indian village. It was raining and cold, the Wampanoag hogan was smokey from the central fire blazing inside and the houses in the Pilgrim village were small, dark huts with dirt floors often housing up to 10 people. As a woman, it sobers me to think that only 4 Pilgrim women survived to host the first Thanksgiving feast.

It dawned on me in that moment how fortunate I am that those brave settlers, with the help of the native peoples, weathered the storm to forge a new nation where liberty, freedom of opportunity, and pursuit of religious choice without persecution could be available to all her citizens. When you consider thier sacrifice, it makes it clear how important it is for our leaders today to carry the mantle of freedom instead of creating bureaucracies that dismantle our liberty.

Today I’m grateful to all those brave men and women who settled this land and those who sacrifice to today to keep her safe and free, so that I can enjoy my turkey in my humble home in America — the greatest country in the world!

Happy Thanksgiving, Hot Air.

Thanksgiving wishes to the Hot Air writers and staff.

I am thankful for my family and friends.
I am thankful for the wit and wisdom of the posters here on Hot Air. Without you, I don’t think I’d have a shred of sanity left after these past 11 months (and counting).

I am thankful for my wife and family.
I am thankful that I live in the greatest nation on earth.
I am thankful for the military and protection they provide.
But most of all, I am thankful to my cat Lucky, whose passing last January brought me back to the Church and led to my confirmation. I know it sounds odd, but when my best friend passed away, I thought the world ended. My Lucky showed me that there is so much to enjoy in life.

I’m grateful today for my friends and family. 20 years ago, I decided I had put work ahead of everything. Ego, I guess. I wanted to shine, succeed, etc.

I recognized that my priorities were upside down. I changed course, and every day I’m grateful that I was flexible and honest enough with myself to do so. Today, I’m amazed at the difference.

I’m grateful I put service to other people into my daily life. It has transformed me. I remember the Thanksgiving where everything had to be perfect, and I made two teen-age boys stay up way too late polishing silver. And I remember the Thanksgiving when I joined friends in a feast for LA homeless. There wasn’t a potato bud in sight. Everything was homemade, from mounds of real potatoes and real gravy to over 50 beautifully browned turkeys. People lined up from all over downtown LA. The ambiance was intoxicating. There is simply NO gratitude better than watching someone try to top an overpiled plate with JUST a bit more. That’s a picture of real gratitude.

I’m grateful to know what matters now in life. I am grateful to know that 30% of people I meet in life like me immediately, 30% can’t stand me, and the rest aren’t interested enough to have an opinion. That’s perspective, and it’s given me freedom from trying to live life according to what others think.

I’m grateful to know that a habit of gratitude rewards one with new viewpoints and a startling awareness that most of us have problems of abundance, not the opposite.

I’m grateful to know that negativity is nothing more than a habit of fear. It feeds off of an overblown sense of entitlement and a true lack of love.

The antidote is to appreciate. And it’s readily available.

I’m fairly methodical. I actually did this. Everytime someone cut me off in traffic, recorded. Ditto for everytime someone let me in.

I did this for 48 hours.

I became convinced that it’s true. I focused on the negative, not the positive.

I admitted to myself, I really am a bit of a spoiled brat. Good stuff is my due. Bad stuff? Unfair!

Blessed are the meek,

Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness,

Blessed are the merciful,

Stalker in Chief Andrew Sullivan pledges to fight Sarah Palin forever:

Why I Worry
And why I will not relent on Palin and the danger she represents:

“The energy that actually shapes the world springs from emotions — racial pride, leader-worship, religious belief, love of war — which liberal intellectuals mechanically write off as anachronisms, and which they have usually destroyed so completely in themselves as to have lost all power of action … [H.G. Wells] was, and still is, quite incapable of understanding that nationalism, religious bigotry and feudal loyalty are far more powerful forces than what he himself would describe as sanity.”

And we appease or ignore those forces at our peril.

cats have staff. I have looked high and low, definitely no staff around here.

Cindy Munford on November 26, 2009 at 4:20 PM

Look again. You have something far more valuable than staff.

You have admirers.

I could have been born in Somalia. Or Burma. Or any other third world hell hole. But I was born here in the USA. At this time. What a gift! As an avid student of history, I am beyond grateful that I live here and now. Hundreds of years from now people will wonder what it was like to live in American in the 21st century. Think about that today.

That’s a great post. I grew up not knowing hunger, loved by both parents, a chance at an education, and a great family.

The Scooby-Doo generation has no excuses, and should have a mountain of thanks to God and this country.

Let’s remember the good things in our lives.

I did CA Thanksgiving twice and one time it was snowing on the way up the first week in October in Ontario. That is just insane. Snow the first week in Oct.?

Sapwolf on November 26, 2009 at 4:38 PM

Okay enough about me, I won’t be able to get my fat head through the doors.

Does Bellevue have any slots left for him? Isn’t that where Barney Miller and Co. dropped off some suspects back in the 70′s?

And then there is the liberal atheist Thanksgiving:

So don’t sit at your table and think you’re being good by warmly thanking an indifferent universe for whatever. It doesn’t care…… It would be far wiser to sit at that table and contemplate the threats to your existence, and scheme about how you’re going to get them first.

I grew up with turkeys next door as well. Nasty creatures…

OmahaConservative on November 26, 2009 at 4:19 PM

Geese are really annoying also. I feed some Muscovy ducks that live in our pretend lakes out back but it has attracted Canadian Geese, they spend more time fighting then eating.

that nobody need wait a single moment

before starting to improve the world.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I don’t comment often, but am a HA junkie and enjoy checking in several times a day. It’s my favorite spot to hang out and keeps me informed and up to date. Enjoy reading all the comments – they are also informative and every once in a while one will make me laugh out loud. I’m thankful for my only son and his family who live a half mile from me with three precious grandchildren I wonder what I ever did to deserve. I’m thankful for my wonderful husband and that we both are in good health as of now. May God bless our military who we will forever be appreciative of for fighting to keep us safe!

That is just sad, pathetic, and typical of some.

Why is barry having turkey when his goose is already cooked?

And didn’t his chickens come home to roast?

You know what else is amazing? The small boats they came in across the Atlantic. I saw a replica of the smallest boat amongst the three that came to Jamestown. My God, how could you not be religious coming over in that thing.

We stand on the shoulders of past giants.

A Turkey in the White House and one on the table.

Courage.

And pass the stuffing!

The Pilgrims were tiny people in some ways. The women averaged 5 feet, 1 inch, and the men just 5 foot 6. The Wampanoags averaged 6 inches taller.

Yet, they were giant in spirit.

By tradition, Mary Chilton at age 13, was so exited to near land, she jumped overboard of the small boat, waded in, and was the first Pilgrim to step upon Plymouth Rock.

How like an American.

Right from the beginning.

My funniest Mid-western story. My husband’s aunt was a farmer in Illinois. She did so love that farm.

She offered us some of her duck.

Well, we Univ. of Iowa grad students bought a container and went out to pick up the duck.

She handed him some kind of gun. To me? It looked like something off TV. It was probably something fairly minor.

He had to shoot and pluck the duck.

Trust me. We never took her up on any other offer for food. *haha

BTW, she’s the only person I ever met in life who paid to have a squirrel transported to her yard.

She wanted squirrels, and they were avoiding her property, for some reason.

She actually paid for one.
