Quotes of the day

“President Barack Obama’s top aides met frequently with lobbyists and health care industry heavyweights as his administration pieced together a national health care overhaul, according to White House visitor records obtained Wednesday by The Associated Press…

“The records list the kinds of people usually involved in Washington policymaking: business, union and trade association executives, lobbyists and political strategists. Wednesday’s disclosure was significant because of Obama’s campaign promise to change business as usual in Washington, and because he voluntarily released records showing the access of special interests as the administration crafted national health care policy.”

“The Senate Republicans’ chart demonstrates that the total for all of these costs — based on CBO projections for the bill’s true first 10 years — is $2.5 trillion. And costs would only skyrocket from there, as the chart’s trajectory suggests. In the 5 years to follow (2024-28), spending on “expansions in insurance coverage” alone would be $1.7 trillion, making the bill’s total costs in its real first 15 years well over $4 trillion — based on CBO projections.”

“The Democrats sincerely believe that nationalized health care, in one form or another, is the best thing for America, and that if they can get it passed, voters will fall in love with it. Politically, there is a real danger they’re right. Americans are loath to relinquish entitlements once they’ve secured them. That’s the Republicans’ gamble.

“Then again, Democrats run the very serious risk that before the imagined joys of health-care reform can be realized, voters will revolt over its tax hikes, massive Medicare cuts, increased bureaucracy, and/or its budget-exploding costs. That’s the Democrats’ gamble.

“Some moderate Democrats are making a side bet that they can vote for it out of solidarity and then run back to the center come the 2010 elections.

“Well, I say let it ride. And just to make it more interesting, Republicans should promise to repeal ‘Obamacare’ if they get a congressional majority in 2010. As National Review’s Ramesh Ponnuru argues, that way moderate Democrats won’t be able to run away from their votes come 2010. They’ll be on notice that this will be the campaign issue of the election. And moderate Republicans will be on notice to resist the temptation to tinker with Obamacare rather than defenestrate it once it’s passed.”

It seems like a lifetime ago that a crowd met on a frigid February morning in Springfield, Illinois to set out on an improbable course to change our nation.

Schadenfreude on November 26, 2009 at 12:05 AM

Let me guess, the filthy lying coward isn’t talking about the election of Abraham Lincoln.

And, no…..

I am thankful for many things in my life. My family, my health, and my job which I still find interesting and relevant. I’m thankful for being an American and all the opportunity that comes from that status. I’m thankful for our troops in harm’s way. I’m thankful for many things both private and more general like the stuff above. BUT AT NO TIME AM I SPECIFICALLY THANKFUL FOR DIVERSITY.

In times past, it was enough to be thankful to be an American, not to celebrate some sort of status as a hyphenated American.

Speaking of scams-here’s a true story which happened today and, at first glance, may seem irrelevant but you multiple similar stories like these thousands of times and add governmental corruption into the mix and you will have health costs shooting up to 8 times beyond extrapolations.

Today I was about to order ‘Ornabac’ a bird food supplement containing lactobacillus which aids in birds’ digestion of food and to prevent diarrhea. Ornabac is produced by Mardel Laboratories and, last year I purchased this product for $17.99 a pound. However, this year the product is no longer manufactured in large containers. instead you must buy it in smaller containers measured in grams (the metric system is unfamiliar to most Americans-which, of course, is part of the scam.) The price is now $3.99 for a 15 gram container. Using my metric conversion calculator that comes to .5291 ounces (a little more than half an ounce-it must contain gold dust!) and dividing this figure into $3.99, you get $7.54 an ounce and (x16)=$120.64 a pound! (No wonder Americans were suckered by obama-a large portion of them are idiots!)That’s more than a 600% increase in a year!!!!

Not only did these Mardel criminals eliminate bulk discounts and change weights from ounces to grams but THEY ALSO REDEFINED THEIR PRODUCT FROM A FOOD SUPPLEMENT TO A MEDICINE. Obviously, if it’s a “medicine” (some stores now call it an ‘anti-biotic’)it HAS to be expensive! Fortunately I found a competitive product from another supplier at one-sixth the cost.

This is what will happen with an all-pervasive Health Care plan-especially run by a simultaneously inefficient and corrupt government. A few thousand deals with companies like Mardel and cost overruns will be in the trillions.

Why Government Can’t Run a Business

The Obama administration is bent on becoming a major player in — if not taking over entirely — America’s health-care, automobile and banking industries. Before that happens, it might be a good idea to look at the government’s track record in running economic enterprises. It is terrible.

In 1913, for instance, thinking it was being overcharged by the steel companies for armor plate for warships, the federal government decided to build its own plant. It estimated that a plant with a 10,000-ton annual capacity could produce armor plate for only 70% of what the steel companies charged.

When the plant was finally finished, however — three years after World War I had ended — it was millions over budget and able to produce armor plate only at twice what the steel companies charged. It produced one batch and then shut down, never to reopen.

Or take Medicare. Other than the source of its premiums, Medicare is no different, economically, than a regular health-insurance company. But unlike, say, UnitedHealthcare, it is a bureaucracy-beclotted nightmare, riven with waste and fraud. Last year the Government Accountability Office estimated that no less than one-third of all Medicare disbursements for durable medical equipment, such as wheelchairs and hospital beds, were improper or fraudulent. Medicare was so lax in its oversight that it was approving orthopedic shoes for amputees.

These examples are not aberrations; they are typical of how governments run enterprises. There are a number of reasons why this is inherently so. Among them are:

A populace proud of itself for electing its first black president and still brimming with hope (yes, hope) and idealism at his inauguration 11 months ago is now shocked at the pace and breadth of his plans for “change.” Deficit spending at a higher rate than FDR or LBJ, middle class tax hikes, an unconstitutional mandate that all Americans buy health insurance. This is not what the good-hearted, middle-of-the-road Americans who elected this president thought they were voting for.

America’s government has changed. But America hasn’t. Obama (and Pelosi and Reid) have not grasped that. They operate under the delusion that the country is united behind their big-government agenda. They believe this even after an October Gallup poll reported that 40 percent of Americans self-identify as conservatives, 36 percent moderates and only 20 percent liberals.

Conservatives have the country. Obama has the government. Given Obama’s remarkably open and constant disdain for the people he was elected to govern, one can make an educated guess what their reaction will be the first time they have a chance to register their feelings at the ballot box.

For giving them such an unexpectedly early opportunity to correct the mistake they made last fall, the American people — especially conservatives — ought to be thankful for this president. Infamous Mustang Ranch brothel revived
USA Today Posted 8/11/2007 6:37 AM
The Mustang Ranch was burned down in 1975 in an apparent arson, but Conforte rebuilt it. In 1976, heavyweight contender Oscar Bonavena was shot to death by a Mustang Ranch bodyguard.

Conforte dealt mostly in cash and kept few records. By 1990, the IRS had seized the ranch, putting the federal government in the unique position of running a brothel.

The government failed and the ranch was padlocked for the first time. The IRS auctioned off beds, the bidets — even the room numbers — to recover some of Conforte’s tax debt.

For, as the most of you have heard, the Turks and Arabs have attacked them and have conquered the territory of the Greek empire as far west as the shore of the Mediterranean and the Hellespont, which is called the Arm of St. George. They have occupied more and more of the lands of those Christians, and have overcome them in seven battles. They have killed and captured many, and have destroyed the churches and devastated the empire. If you permit them to continue thus for awhile with impurity, the faithful of God will be much more widely attacked by them. On this account I, or rather the Lord, beseech you as Christ’s heralds to publish this everywhere and to persuade all people of whatever rank, foot-soldiers and knights, poor and rich, to carry aid promptly to those Christians and to destroy that vile race from the lands of our friends. I say this to those who are present, it meant also for those who are absent. Moreover, Christ commands it.

Seriously, start up a health insurance company and get every stupid moron liberal to join it. Make it a non-profit and provide free insurance for people below a certain income level, subsidized by the other like-minded members. Problem friggin’ solved and no conservative’s coverage is touched. If every idiot who voted for Obama joins it, it’ll have far more members than any existing health insurer, so it ought to be able to meet any economy of scale and risk-pool projections for a “public option”, anyway, only it won’t be supported by taxpayers in perpetuity.

BREAKING NEWS on CLIMATEGATE from Dan Reil:

UPDATE 15:49 NZDT – NIWA’s news release in response to this story appears to have been delayed, and according to a radio news report a few minutes ago Rodney Hide, leader of the minority Act Party and a minister in the National Government, is now calling on his Cabinet colleague, Climate Change Minister Nick Smith, to “please explain” [normal transmission now resumes]

The New Zealand Government’s chief climate advisory unit NIWA is under fire for allegedly massaging raw climate data to show a global warming trend that wasn’t there.

The scandal breaks as fears grow worldwide that corruption of climate science is not confined to just Britain’s CRU climate research centre.

Yes and Obama can veto it also. which would mean 3/4ths of Congress would have to vote for it. so they would need more than a filibuster proof majority. However congress can defund the 111 angencies set up in the bill making them paper tigers. They can also defund the IRS so they do not have the man power to enforce the new fines and court cases it would require.

they are circling the wagons:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpUz5zXywhY

NIWA chief scientist David Wratt says he has no plans to release data backing up claims of different temperature adjustments between historial weather station sites.

Wratt told Investigate tonight that some studies existed which contained “overlapping” periods which allowed NIWA to compare the temperatures at both locations.

He said NIWA intendeds to release data regarding the Kelburn weather station tonight, but will not release other data.

“There are various other sites that will be affected by a change in location”

“Have you done a 12 or 24 month study comparing both locations simultaneously?”

“There’s been a whole lot of work behind this in terms of things like having overlaps between particular stations when they’ve moved. There’s a whole methodology, internationally accepted, where you actually work out how to correct for these sorts of site changes and so on.”

“But you’ll be providing all that shortly?”

“Well, we’re not going to run around in circles just because somebody has put out a press release. We will continue to put out what is reasonable to provide.”

“Wouldn’t it be important –“

“No!”

“…for people to see the comparison studies between both sites?”

“Look, we’re talking about scientific studies here. I’ve told you we’ll put out information about Wellington. Basically it’s not up to us to justify ourselves to a whole lot of people that come out with truly unfounded allegations. We work through the scientific process, we publish stuff through the literature, that’s the way that we deal with this stuff and I can’t have my staff running around in circles over something which is not a justified allegation. The fact that the Climate Science Coalition are making allegations about my staff who have the utmost integrity really really pisses me off.

“That’s all I’ve got to say to you now – [click]”

MY COMMENT AS BLOGGER: Without the baseline comparisons between the weather sensors at one site and then the other, the public and researchers remain in the dark as to whether the adjustments fairly reflect the changed locations. We don’t even know when the adjustments were finally applied. There is nothing wrong with making adjustments, but without transparency it is largely meaningless and unable to be peer reviewed

good times good times. I am thankful for people fighting back form this kind of socialist crap: Baghdad Bob would be proud of the global warming hoaxers:

Gone is the relentless rising temperature trend, and instead there appears to have been a much smaller growth in warming, consistent with the warming up of the planet after the end of the Little Ice Age in 1850.

The revelations are published today in a news alert from The Climate Science Coalition of NZ:

Straight away you can see there’s no slope—either up or down. The temperatures are remarkably constant way back to the 1850s. Of course, the temperature still varies from year to year, but the trend stays level—statistically insignificant at 0.06°C per century since 1850.

Putting these two graphs side by side, you can see huge differences. What is going on?

Why does NIWA’s graph show strong warming, but graphing their own raw data looks completely different? Their graph shows warming, but the actual temperature readings show none whatsoever!

Have the readings in the official NIWA graph been adjusted?

It is relatively easy to find out. We compared raw data for each station (from NIWA’s web site) with the adjusted official data, which we obtained from one of Dr Salinger’s colleagues.

Requests for this information from Dr Salinger himself over the years, by different scientists, have long gone unanswered, but now we might discover the truth.

Proof of man-made warming

What did we find? First, the station histories are unremarkable. There are no reasons for any large corrections. But we were astonished to find that strong adjustments have indeed been made.

About half the adjustments actually created a warming trend where none existed; the other half greatly exaggerated existing warming. All the adjustments increased or even created a warming trend, with only one (Dunedin) going the other way and slightly reducing the original trend.

The shocking truth is that the oldest readings have been cranked way down and later readings artificially lifted to give a false impression of warming, as documented below. There is nothing in the station histories to warrant these adjustments and to date Dr Salinger and NIWA have not revealed why they did this.

One station, Hokitika, had its early temperatures reduced by a huge 1.3°C, creating strong warming from a mild cooling, yet there’s no apparent reason for it.

We have discovered that the warming in New Zealand over the past 156 years was indeed man-made, but it had nothing to do with emissions of CO2—it was created by man-made adjustments of the temperature. It’s a disgrace.

NIWA claim their official graph reveals a rising trend of 0.92ºC per century, which means (they claim) we warmed more than the rest of the globe, for according to the IPCC, global warming over the 20th century was only about 0.6°C.

NIWA’s David Wratt has told Investigate magazine this afternoon his organization denies faking temperature data and he claims NIWA has a good explanation for adjusting the temperature data upward. Wratt says NIWA is drafting a media response for release later this afternoon which will explain why they altered the raw data.

“Do you agree it might look bad in the wake of the CRU scandal?”

“No, no,” replied Wratt before hitting out at the Climate Science Coalition and accusing them of “misleading” people about the temperature adjustments.

Manipulation of raw data is at the heart of recent claims of corrupt scientific practice in climate science, with CRU’s Phil Jones recently claiming old temperature records collected by his organization were “destroyed” or “lost”, meaning researchers can now only access manipulated data.

People are loathe to give up entitlements, no doubt about it…but the truth is this bill requires that they do just that. It can only be financed through cuts in other entitlement programs. That can back fire. Add to that the fact that most people either have some sort of health care insurance or don’t trust the government to come with something workable..and I am not sure that people won’t give it up.

I heard Dick Morris talking about the effect on medicaid as well. They say that states will have to increase medicaid to something like 200% of poverty. He said that would work in New York where it is already at that level, but in California it would add $5 billion in costs to the state. And as we all know, California is already broke. So someone somewhere will have to give up something to make this work. And that is what people are worried about.

Here’s the deal… This us unsustainable even if they DOUBLE taxes on everyone.

They can confiscate 100% of the income of the “rich” and it won’t pay for it.

They can even start taxing the nearly 50% who who are “zero liability” voters because they pay no taxes and it won’t pay for it.

And that isn’t even accounting for the DEEP full blown economic depression that will make the 1930′s look like boom times that would result from TRYING to pay for Obamacare. As has been proven time and again, tax increases NEVER generate the revenue they project because they affect the underlying economy.

So, what will happen if this passes will be a combination of draconian cuts in healthcare services, draconian tax increases, draconian restrictions on freedom, and economic depression with double digit unemployment with NO END in sight.

You simply cannot have all that happen without there being a 2nd American Revolution. We have too many generations used to freedom, capitalism, and the economic prosperity that brings to accept the “shock” of suddenly becoming “Neo-Europe on steroids” overnight without taking up arms since our government clearly won’t listen to us (Obamacare is in the 30′s in support and dropping like a rock).

my daughter & I drove to Richmond 2 days ago for “light accessory shopping” (as she puts it). I searched for & bought every elephant earring, brooch & bracelet I could find.

and I told every one at the checkout “I’m buying all these elephant items because I am going to wear my Republican heart on my sleeve for the next year. We must take our country back”.

to a woman, each checkout clerk grinned & said “yes, thank goodness you’re out there everyday campaigning for us.

The mood of the country is ripe for an overthrow of the Dems & a repeal of most of the entitlement laws.

Government does not have profit motive it has a vote motive. therefore profit is not advanced and the business fails

unseen on November 26, 2009 at 12:56 AM

I beg to differ; They first make it look as if the legislation is passed to benefit the voter; Then, you are taxed at a higher rate, to pay them back for it.
That’s their entire agenda. Deception and theft.

Cybergeezer on November 26, 2009 at 9:12 AM

I heard Dick Morris talking about the effect on medicaid as well. They say that states will have to increase medicaid to something like 200% of poverty. He said that would work in New York where it is already at that level, but in California it would add $5 billion in costs to the state. And as we all know, California is already broke. So someone somewhere will have to give up something to make this work. And that is what people are worried about.

Terrye on November 26, 2009 at 7:34 AM

Look to Canada for how this works. Every election the main theme there is health care. The debate is always about which party can make it run better. It has never and never will be about one party supporting private health care vs. one party supporting public health care. Once it was implemented, nationalized health care became the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th rail of politics in Canada. And the same will happen here.

And how do they pay for it? Simple. Tax everything that moves and then add a surtax on top of that tax. There is a national sales tax in Canada on top of the equivalent of state sales taxes. In some places the sales tax is 18%. And this is not a VAT, it’s just a straight up sales tax. And all this on top of income tax rates that approach 50% for people making as little as $100K a year.

That’s why the Dems don’t really care about 2010 or even 2012. It’s a short term loss for long term gain.

angryed on November 26, 2009 at 9:15 AM

P.S. to 9:12 AM
The government business does profit until the government fails due to the country becoming too poor to be taxed; But by then, these parasites are rich and off in their Italian villas.

And before anyone dismisses Canada because it’s a bunch of socialists….that wasn’t always the case. Canada used to be a very conservative country. The radicalization of Canada happened in the 1970s when a young, hip, good looking, charismatic guy was elected as PM. He brought in nationalized health care, he decimated the military, he introduced the notion of a “muti-cultural” country, he became literally good friends with Fidel Castro. That guy was Pierre Trudeau. And within 10 years of his first election, the country was unrecognizable from what it had been.

Sound familiar?

Republicans should promise to repeal ‘Obamacare’ if they get a congressional majority in 2010.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but as I recall it takes a 2/3 vote of congress to repeal a law. 67 votes in the Senate, 290 in the House? It will never happen.

This monster must never be given life.

oldleprechaun on November 26, 2009 at 10:57 AM

It is the mindset of the people and the mindset of congress.

#1 The 53% who voted for Obama do not understand nor can they comprehend that nothing is free in this world.

#2 Congress with their greased pensions and healthcare have set them selves up for a lifetime to be immune to the damage they cause by spending money that is not theirs with absolutley no recourse for any responsibility.

The only solution is to share the taxes with the freeloaders and get these crooks out of Washington.

Put Obama on the streets with a monkey and an organ grinder and let the masses support him.

as his administration pieced together a national health care overhaul,

They did?? I haven’t seen it.

ddrintn on November 26, 2009 at 12:33 PM

The biggest problem with the low IQ democratic plan is there will be no way to pay for it in 10 years. Tax revenues will be decreasing as less people work for companies and many become independent contractors. There will be very large incentives for individuals to hide income to keep their health care payments to the government low.

And for many on the lazy left, there will be even less incentive to work. Taxes on the “rich” with incomes above $250k will go back toward 90%, but income above that level will then be hidden, making tax revenues fall even more. The program will be bankrupt by 2020, and the economy of the USA will be back where it was in the 70′s. They will then start taxing your asset base in a last gasp attempt to fund the government bureaucracy. A few years later everyone will be declaring bankruptcy and the country will fall apart.

Of course this won’t happen if the loony leftist plan is stopped.

ray on November 26, 2009 at 1:03 PM

ANY plan is a public plan. KILL THIS BILL. PERIOD

singer on November 26, 2009 at 1:26 PM

That is the problem. The left has no understanding of economics. So they play like it is a zero sum game and think that if they raise taxes to 90% on the “rich” that they will actually get that revenue. They won’t, people will either hide their income, or they will just stop making that much.

No one is going to work hard just to hand it over to someone else nor should they. This will have a devastating effect on an already crippled economy, not to mention the crime it will create when the inevitable black market takes off.
