Confirmed: Dobbs could tip election to Obama in a three-way race
posted at 4:45 pm on November 25, 2009 by Allahpundit
Not a huge deal since, according to his spokesman, he’s more inclined to challenge Menendez for New Jersey’s Senate seat in 2012 than run for prez, but it’s still worth flagging given the running debate we’ve been having about third parties. Just think of me as Groundskeeper Willie. I warned ye. Didn’t I warn ye?
A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey shows that if the choice is between President Obama, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and Dobbs, Obama leads 42% to 34% with Dobbs pulling 14% of the vote.
With Mike Huckabee as the Republican nominee, Obama leads 42% to 36%, with Dobbs at 12%.
If Sarah Palin is the GOP nominee, it’s Obama 44%, Palin 37% and Dobbs 12%…
With Dobbs out of the equation, Obama and Romney are tied at 44%, Obama leads Huckabee 45% to 41%, and the president leads Palin 46% to 43%.
Dobbs doesn’t hurt Huckabee much — Obama’s lead grows by only two points with him in the race — but he takes a bite from Palin and kills Romney, reducing him from dead even to an also-ran. Which makes sense: Dobbs is likely to draw blue-collar voters and conservatives who are disaffected with the GOP’s squishiness, leaving a white-collar centrist type like Mitt heavily exposed. Beyond the Dobbs factor, though, what’s fascinating is that even though Romney’s favorables are +11 and Huckabee’s a whopping +28(!), Palin does almost as well as the former and actually better than the latter head to head with Obama in a two-man race — despite her net favorables standing at -3. I’m not sure how to explain that except to read the entire survey as a referendum on The One, with any big-name Republican currently well positioned to pull 40 percent simply for being Not Obama. (It’d be interesting to see how, say, Giuliani fares in a hypothetical match-up.)
Speaking of squishiness, what happens to the Dobbs-heads when they hear about this?
In a little-noticed interview Friday, Mr. Dobbs told Spanish-language network Telemundo he now supports a plan to legalize millions of undocumented workers, a stance he long lambasted as an unfair “amnesty.”
“Whatever you have thought of me in the past, I can tell you right now that I am one of your greatest friends and I mean for us to work together,” he said in a live interview with Telemundo’s Maria Celeste. “I hope that will begin with Maria and me and Telemundo and other media organizations and others in this national debate that we should turn into a solution rather than a continuing debate and factional contest.”
Mr. Dobbs twice mentioned a possible legalization plan for the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in the U.S., saying at one point that “we need the ability to legalize illegal immigrants under certain conditions.”
“Under certain conditions” can mean a lot of things, but like Mark Krikorian says, the specifics won’t save him now: “The amusing thing is that his ‘growth’ isn’t going to help him in any case — the open-borders crowd won’t believe him and immigration hawks will dismiss him as just another McCain-style phony maverick.” True enough, and doubly true if he follows through and runs against, of all people, a Hispanic senator. Just imagine Menendez’s attack ads against him; he wouldn’t have to venture outside of Media Matters’s clip vault to gather enough material for the entire campaign. Exit question: Isn’t one of the problems with a Dobbs candidacy the fact that Dobbs isn’t even the best known right-leaning independent cable news host? O’Reilly or Beck running for president would create much more heat. Instead, we’re going to elect a guy who couldn’t even beat Shep Smith in the ratings? C’mon.

The real news is that Obowa is under 50% in all the match-ups. People will not be so giddy on hopenchange in 2012, and will not commit to a 3rd party candidate because they know it’ll mean 4 more years of Michelle Obamagasms about her “style”.
Speaking of, shouldn’t a woman of Michelle’s intellect, power, and esteem be a bit pissed off that she’s been reduced to a step-ford wife whose only purpose is to showcase some dress someone made for her? Where is Michelle Obama on health care? She was supposed to be in our face about it!

Isn’t it possible that this isn’t about Dobbs or his positions? It turns out that the Democrats totally suck at government but people still remember how much the Republicans blew. So if you poll people and give them a D and R and a semi-recognizable I, the I is going to bring in some chilling numbers.

I might have considered him seriously before but when I heard that he has changed his position and is now in favor of amnesty for illegals. He sealed his fate with me. Am I missing something here?
Sometimes, I can be kind of lysdexic, but it looks to me like it is Obama/GOPer/Dobbs – 43/36/13% +/- 3.5% So the only real story here is the trends: Obama is sinking like a stone and Sarah Palin is taking off like fireworks while Mitt and Huck have largely flatlined.
How long has Palin’s book been out? 10 days? That is quite a bounce. Silly bitsy, Palin can only sell books. Well, I bet she can manage to write another one before 2012 if she needs to. Besides, Palin is crafty; I think she might have more tricks up her sleave; it’s all that time huntin’ stuff in the wilderness I think…
bitsy on November 25, 2009 at 5:26 PM
This is a joke .First Huckabee will not be the nominee and Palin may or may not run.Has far as Dobbs he is a joke.people have too much time on there hands to run a poll like this. How about a three way race with Rush or maybe Beck all of this is just crazy talk.

albill on November 25, 2009 at 5:30 PM
The above paragraph is something to think about when you look at those poll numbers.
The main thing Dobbs has been associated with over the past several years is his opposition to illegal immigration, amnesty and outsourcing. Take the first two away from his campaign via the above statement and how is Lou’s position on those three things much different from, say, Dennis Kucinich?
A pro-amnesty, no-big-deal on illegal immigration Lou Dobbs who runs a campaign based on no outsourcing and high tariffs never sniffs 10 percent or more in the polls once his positions become known — which it wasn’t when the poll was taken. If he stands by his Telemundo remarks, he’s a minimal threat at best to any Republican in 2012.

If they’re polling this, why don’t they poll a four-way – with someone on the looney left splitting the lib vote over, say, Affergrandstand; or abortion funding; or the public option; or cap-and-trade.
I think a good four-way would be loads of fun.
ManUFan on November 25, 2009 at 5:35 PM
Third-party candidates can certainly be a factor, but I think it’s just a tad early to speculate on this particular candidate’s chances of “tipping the election.”
Missy on November 25, 2009 at 5:36 PM
To me, the most significant news to come out of the various surveys is that nearly all of the candidates fall within, or close to, the 3% error factor. That makes it pretty much a four or five way dead heat, three years away.
As for Lou Dobbs??? Get serious. He didn’t attract a million viewers a night on what’s supposed to be THE cable news network, and falls terribly short of the actual leaders. He’s had several years to build a base; and hasn’t. He can run for the Senate, I suppose, but POTUS is out of the question.
GoldenEagle4444 on November 25, 2009 at 5:38 PM
His ‘new, improved’ stance on immigration reform just lost him a lot of Conservative support. Dobbs seems to have all of the other ideological bonafides, but he bears close scrutiny now that he’s tipped his hand on this one issue.
Wilbur on November 25, 2009 at 5:44 PM
All the more reason for the GOP to get its stuff together. Though I’m not sure how you will convince the socialists in the GOP to remove Amnesty as part of the platform.

Obama definitely has the welfare leeches and lizard people vote all locked up. On the bright side, the people who work for a living, those who would like to work for a living, and those who prefer not to be food will be a pretty formidable voting block in 2012.
