AARP backing away from public option?
posted at 12:55 pm on November 25, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Has the AARP thrown in the towel on the public option? Raw Story reports that the senior-advocacy group now says that the government-run health insurance plan is not a priority for their support, mainly because most of their members already qualify for Medicare. However, the group still doesn’t address the extensive Medicare cuts that threaten their members with reduced service:
The influential seniors group AARP said Tuesday it would be willing to endorse a health care bill without a public option of any kind.
“It’s not a priority for us,” said David Certner, Legislative Policy Director of AARP, in an interview with Raw Story. “We’re more concerned about prohibitions due to pre-existing conditions and cost spikes of up to 10 times for 60-64-year-old seniors.”
The AARP isn’t opposed to the public plan as it formally endorsed the House bill, which included it.
“Half of our members are already on a public option — it’s called Medicare,” Certner said. “So we understand its benefits.” But the group hasn’t taken a strong position on the contentious provision — partly, it seems, because of heated internal disputes over health reform, resulting in tens of thousands of members quitting since this summer.
But what about the report from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services? The AARP still hasn’t addressed the analysis from the administrators of Medicare that show that ObamaCare means significant reductions in services to seniors and the disabled, thanks to massive cuts that will fund the rest of the program. As the Washington Post reported, the draconian cuts will likely push even more providers out of the Medicare market, making it much more difficult for seniors to get reliable and reasonable access to care.
Instead of addressing this, the AARP plans to continue its support for $500 billion in cuts to the program and reduced services for its members. They plan to run another ad campaign to bolster public support for ObamaCare, which has dropped almost into fringe status over the last few weeks. The ad, which you can watch at RS, features a “real doctor – spin doctor” setup purporting to debunk arguments by Medicare’s own administrators about higher costs and reduced services.
How will the AARP’s abandonment of the public plan affect the debate? It could leave progressives in the Senate a little more isolated, and give moderates like Ben Nelson, Mary Landrieu, and Blanche Lincoln more room to insist that it get dropped. It will be a subtle change, not a gamebreaker, but don’t expect the hard Left to let AARP off the hook for this statement.

Another non-profit shooting for big profits by trying to now sell augmenting insurance for failing Medicaid, which process they support. Sleazier than Enron, and taking down seniors in the process.
Boycott AARP.

If AARP throws O under the bus, that is Huge. They’re mostly interested in selling insurance, and would dump O if his takeover hurt their bottom line

I have for years written REFUSED R.T.S. on their solicitation envelopes, and put them back in the mailbox.
It makes me feel good.

If the large cuts in Medicare are made into law, doesn’t that make their “gap” insurance more important to seniors to assure that they can continue with their care and choice of doctors?
Cindy Munford on November 25, 2009 at 1:02 PM
The AARP has been a far left organization for years. They aren’t ‘non-partizan’. Medicare needs to be fixed. It is important enough to fix on its own.
The federal government STEALS money for Medicare out of every single check. If you die before 65, too bad, the government keeps the money and gives you nothing.
Cutting Medicare means they will use the money that they steal for Medicare and steal it FROM Medicare to pay for another plan that the government will need to steal taxes to create.
$500B in cuts to Medicare are huge. I can’t imagine a seasoned politician thinks it is a good idea.
ThackerAgency on November 25, 2009 at 1:03 PM
The ‘gap’ insurance has been around for years. It isn’t a ‘new’ thing. Even if this passes, people will be able to make a fine living in the private sector selling ‘gap’ policies.
My dad has a ton still on the books that he’s had for 20 years. It is a good deal. The best deal now is Mutual of Omaha. I’m looking forward to their destruction of Medicare Advantage. That was an easy call. All of those people will need a supplement. . . I’ll be glad to sell you the best one available.
I don’t even focus on that market at all at this point, but I should because it is a good deal. I wish I could get it.
ThackerAgency on November 25, 2009 at 1:05 PM
Don’t do that. Instead get that postage paid envelope out of it, put a note in it about how you feel about them, and mail it back. That’s what I’ve been doing with not only the AARP stuff, but the crap I’ve been getting from the RNC. I even throw in some Monopoly money just for fun.
Make them pay for their stupidity and selling out our Seniors.

The grammar in the bolded section appears to be a bit mangled, or missing a word. Sounds like something Obama might greet a visiting head of state with.

Millions of retired persons, are getting hung out to dry, by a group that was supposed to be representative of them. This has to be one of thee most corrupt groups now, ranking right up there with ACORN.
AARP sucks, and needs to be shut down. I hope they keep losing members.
capejasmine on November 25, 2009 at 1:12 PM
AARP is an insurance marketing company… A public option is not good for them…
This will provide cover for the ultra libs to move to the center, making it more likely a POS bill will pass… I was hoping the circular firing squad would continue…
phreshone on November 25, 2009 at 1:13 PM
It’s all a facade. This is a leftist org and any member should think twice about membership. Medicare cuts, rationing and end of life plans, who are they supporting. Not the elderly. WAKE UP!
rjoco1 on November 25, 2009 at 1:15 PM
Rush says the cuts in Medicare will never happen. The costs will skyrocket but it will be too late to do anything about it by then. It’s designed to explode the economy and make total government takeover possible. Once that happens any cuts in programs will be unstoppable and not even open for debate. We are on the road to serfdom and both political parties have put us there.

AARP is all about the money. They get most of their income from selling suplimental insurance. They see a boon with Obamacare, and don’t want to loose their spot at the trough.
saiga on November 25, 2009 at 1:19 PM
It doesn’t matter. It’s in the bill. Everything that is in the bill right now is fair game.
The reason I didn’t want to get to involved with arguing against things to this point is because we didn’t have a bill. Now that we have a bill, it is skeet shootin target practice.
They can’t say ‘well we won’t really cut Medicare $500B’. It’s in the bill. If they vote for the bill, they vote to cut Medicare by $500B. It’s really a dumb, unnecessary, and amateurish move. . . I can’t imagine Reid would have done it. But everything in the bill is fair game.
We need Cavuto back with the speed reader again.

Just adjusting to the way the political wind is blowing…Nothing more, nothing less. And, reacting to the thousands of membership cancellations (myself included), as well. For as long as I can remember, AARP has been a far left leaning organization, but even they are seeing the political light.
I certainly agree totally with saiga, at 1:19 PM. The wind was at their backs last November; now, it’s hitting them right in the kisser and they’re “adjusting” accordingly.
About as phony a “non partisan” company as they come.
GoldenEagle4444 on November 25, 2009 at 1:26 PM
AARP is just another hack organization that will support anything that makes money for them. People should start dropping that two-bit sham organization like a hot potato.
rplat on November 25, 2009 at 1:27 PM
Correct. They want the business of the Medicare Advantage participants. It’s right there in all of their latest advertisements where they’ve changed some of the lingo they normally use. The AARP isn’t throwing O under the bus. They’re just trying to save their own behinds.
Connie on November 25, 2009 at 1:27 PM
To complete that thought, they are willing to throw all of us under the bus to get what they want.
Connie on November 25, 2009 at 1:30 PM
AARP should be broken down and thrown out on their collective asses…..Start anew….Throw advertisement in garbage like I do
hawkman on November 25, 2009 at 1:30 PM
Isn’t Medicare really a single payer system and not a public option? And isn’t the goal of the Socialist Democrats to install a SPS? AARP needs to be more careful and not reveal its (or its master’s) cards.

You’ve all got it wrong what to do with AARP mailers. Write back with your protest, put that in the evelope, then tape the envelope to a brick and put it in for returned postage.
(Actually, I think the post office would reject it, but it would be fun to try).

ya2daup on November 25, 2009 at 1:45 PM
AARP had two choices, either look out for its members or make a lot of new money…they chose the money. I hope the result is the same as the National Organization for Women’s when they refused to hammer Bubba on leftist ideological grounds, a loss or members and prestige to the point of insignificance.
JIMV on November 25, 2009 at 1:45 PM
Next time:
- find a brick
- wrap/tape it in brown shopping bag paper
- stuff the prepaid envelope with their solicitation
- seal the envelope
- glue the back of the envelope to the “front” of the brick
- take INSIDE the nearest Post Office and say “Postage Guaranteed”
That will REALLY cost them money… Works every time…
Khun Joe on November 25, 2009 at 1:52 PM
Khun Joe,
I thought that was going to end with “hit them in the back of their freaking head with it!” Does the brick thing really work?

I already threw my AARP renewal form in the trash. I found that once signed up for NY Life’s insurance (at a nice discount) and medicare drug coverage, I can keep both without having to have AARP membership. So to hell with AARP.
bradley11 on November 25, 2009 at 2:02 PM
Ed, correct me if I’m wrong, but Obama still has NOT appointed anyone at the helm of Medicare nor Medicaid. How can AARP (and everyone else!) not be outraged that Obama and democrats want a complete take-over of healthcare, and yet, 10 months in office has failed to staff it completely! I suspect Obama will wait until the bill passes, then appoint Andy Stern or Tom Daschle…
TN Mom on November 25, 2009 at 2:08 PM
AARP is nothing more than an insurance sales force. You pay for what you get.
AnninCA on November 25, 2009 at 2:14 PM
BTW, if you have AARP insurance you can still drop your membership in AARP. A relative falls into that category, and we both dropped membership a few years ago when we became aware of the politics. But she still has her insurance.
The AARP literature/mailers don’t say this. In fact they are downright misleading, implying you have to be a member to get the insurance. I know from personal experience that you do not.
So do the right thing and at least burn that membership card. And let them know why you did!
DaMav on November 25, 2009 at 2:19 PM
They sure are spending a lot of money on their creepy “HELP” commerical that I can’t seem to avoid on TV. What’s a good alternative to the AARP? They are merely the left’s mouthpiece and I would rather not support them.
drunyan8315 on November 25, 2009 at 2:21 PM
gap coverage == Cadillac Tax. Nothing will be the same after this bill passes, including Medicare.

Looks like the libs are prepared to take what they can get and will jam the public option in next time Dems get power. Gradualism…. they’ve been doing it for years. End result is the same. Just a matter of time before we are there.
PrincipledPilgrim on November 25, 2009 at 3:09 PM
AARP’s antics this year with their zealous endorsement of B.O.-care already cost them a ton of members, myself included. So they can take whatever action they want here to try and save their hides and it won’t mean a thing to us former members. Damage is already done.
pilamaye on November 25, 2009 at 4:08 PM
AARP can bite my aging a$$. They do not work for seniors. They only want you to think they do so they can squeeze cash out of your wallet. They are worse than dishonest televangelists. At least those guys are mildly entertaining.
SKYFOX on November 25, 2009 at 4:15 PM
AARP makes most of it’s money selling supplemental insurance to it’s membership. With a cut in Medicare, this would only increase .. and so would their income.
J_Crater on November 25, 2009 at 5:07 PM
I have most certainly backed away from AARP..
It would appear to be the Association for the Advancement of Retarded Politics…or Retarded People…take yer pick.
They lost me long ago…traitors to their cause for sure.

It could be the plan for AARP is to have reduced benefits for Medicare… Then more people would buy supplementary insurance to get those benefits back. More money for AARP.

I like to scribble “we do not support left-wing advocacy groups” on their literature in large letters with a magic marker, and then send it back in their postage-paid envelope. When I get a phone solicitor from AARP, I tell them the same thing.
AARP has been fraudulently presenting themselves as advocates for seniors and as representatives of their client base. Their clients, in fact, have ABSOLUTELY NO INPUT to the political pronouncements of the AARP: these seniors just wanted insurance…not a representative…much less a lying and self-serving representative.
Remember the last time this happened? Congress passed a bill advocated by AARP, and the uprising was so widespread and vocal that Congress was forced to repeal the bill just a few months after passage.
Some Congresspeople are just slow learners, I guess!
