Video: Hey, who’s up for a screaming match over global warming?

posted at 6:41 pm on November 24, 2009 by Allahpundit

By popular request, a “festive” exchange from this afternoon’s Cavuto in honor of WaPo’s new poll showing growing skepticism about the topic du jour. Growing, that is, but still mild: Fully 72 percent believe in global warming (down from 80 percent last year), including 71 percent of independents. Even a majority of Republicans believe in it, although that percentage has dipped from 76 percent all the way down to 54. Imagine what the numbers would look like if television news hadn’t completely blacked out news of Climategate.

Incidentally, am I hallucinating or did Ed Begley choose this week of all weeks to tout the virtues of peer-reviewed research? Because, dude:

But what stood out most for me was extensive evidence of the hijacking of the “peer review” process to enforce global warming dogma. Peer review is the practice of subjecting scientific papers to review by other scientists with relevant expertise before they can be published in professional journals. The idea is to weed out research with obvious flaws or weak arguments, but there is a clear danger that such a process will simply reinforce groupthink. If it is corrupted, peer review can be a mechanism for an entrenched establishment to exclude legitimate challenges by simply refusing to give critics a hearing.

And that is precisely what we find.

In response to an article challenging global warming that was published in the journal Climate Research, CRU head Phil Jones complains that the journal needs to “rid themselves of this troublesome editor”-hopefully not through the same means used by Henry II’s knights. Michael Mann replies:

I think we have to stop considering “Climate Research” as a legitimate peer-reviewed journal. Perhaps we should encourage our colleagues in the climate research community to no longer submit to, or cite papers in, this journal.

Note the circular logic employed here. Skepticism about global warming is wrong because it is not supported by scientific articles in “legitimate peer-reviewed journals.” But if a journal actually publishes such an article, then it is by definition not “legitimate.”

Shockingly, the Climategate e-mails aren’t even a factor in this discussion. No matter. Let the angry finger-jabbing begin!

Ed’s “peer review” thing is what struck me too. The lefties think that makes any peer reviewed paper infallible, but peer review is just a minimum standard, and can be corrupted just like any other human endeavor.

The history of science is rife with powerful cliques who controlled the grants, hiring, and publishing processes, thus slowing down the progress of science.

“What’s this?” thought Barack Obama. “I can feel nothing warmer at all! That is terrible. Am I stupid? Am I a flat-earther? Am I a denier? Am I not fit to be President? That would be the most dreadful thing that could happen to me. “Oh, it is very hot!” Obama said aloud. “It has my highest approbation.” And Obama nodded in a contented way, and gazed outside, for he would not say that he felt no Global Warming. The whole entourage that he had with him looked and looked, and felt no warming, any more than the rest; but, like Barack Obama they said, “It is so hot!” and Rahm Emanuel counseled him to always say that he felt hot when he was out in public, even hotter than all the ACORN and SEIC troubles were making them both feel. “It is warm, hot even!” went from mouth to mouth. On all sides there seemed to be general warming, and Barack Obama gave Al Gore the title of Imperial Master of Global Warming Science.

So Barack Obama went in procession, and every one in the streets said, “How incomparable hot it is! What a hot day it is!” No one would let it be perceived that he could not feel warming, for that would have shown that he was not fit for his office, or was very stupid or a flat-earther or a denier. No day of Barack Obama’s had ever been as hot as this one.

“But I’m freezing my ass off out here!” a little child cried out at last. “Just hear what that innocent says!” said the father: and one whispered to another what the child had said. “But it is cold out here!” said the whole people at length. That touched Barack Obama, for it seemed to him that they were right; but the thought within himself was, “I must go through with feeling all the Global Warming. I do not dare to do otherwise” And so he held himself a little higher which was very difficult as he had thrown his back out with all the bowing that he had been doing lately, and his aides held on tighter than ever, and proclaimed the Global Warming which did not exist at all.

Wow that was disappointing. I assumed for years that Begley was that way until recently when he was on NPR . In that interview he was even keeled and he was non-judgmental. He essentially said to do what you can to help the environment .
————————————-

Also regarding peer reviews from

http://www.linfo.org/peer_review.html

Some critics believe that peer review has a built-in bias against highly original works and results because reviewers (as do people in general) tend to be more tolerant of works and results that are consistent with their own views and more critical of those that contradict them. It should be kept in mind that history is replete with examples of innovations that were originally ridiculed by their peers because they contradicted the common wisdom of the day2. The bias by academics against highly innovative work may be in part a result of the fact that they have vested interests in maintaining the status quo after having spent many years or decades supporting it.

CWforFreedom on November 24, 2009 at 7:25 PM

Good for Ed being green. Now how many of us have the green to buy the solar panels, hybrid cars, windmills, new windows, or even insulation. Many home owners struggle to make these upgrades.

If they want us all to go green then they need to lower the cost of going green. It makes no sense to me that to do it we have to subsidize it or force our citizens regardless of whether they can afford it to do so.

When I lived in DC, stuck in traffic everyday due to the congressional employees I would yell, “want me to go green, you first.” When Congress requires all of their employees to take the metro then we can talk about going green.

The Ugly American on November 24, 2009 at 7:31 PM

It seems a little ironic that Begley rejects the opinion of a PhD physicist, but he’s perfectly qualified as an actor.

Someone made the point that staticians are more vital to climate research than the specialists because they have to sift through and analyze mountains of data. They don’t have to understand the inner workings of climatology to construct a temperature record, etc. I agree: wasn’t the hockey stick graph debunked by a mathematician?

Most of you only whine about the global warming theory because Al Gore is the poster boy for it.

Before then, you had never heard of it and you couldn’t care less. Al Gore didn’t invent global warming, you know.

Ed Begley said in so many words that if the science doesn’t add up, it will be proven eventually. That is true. He also said don’t listen to actors, broadcasters, weathermen and anyone else but scientists. Makes total sense because they know more about it than we do. There isn’t 100% agreement on anything anyway.

Just because conservatives can find the occasional skeptic doesn’t mean the entire global warming theory is bogus. Especially when most of the skeptics are not climate scientists. Do I ask a chiropractor about heart surgery?

Those screaming about some global HOAX have their tin foil wrapped too tight. If it is bunk, that will be proven as time goes on.

Yeah, some do use the global warming thing to attack capitalism. They use most anything for that, though.

Barely good, at that.

I hate to disagree in such a trivial matter, but Amazon Women on the Moon was much better, & two years later.

Most of you only whine about the global warming theory because Al Gore is the poster boy for it.

Before then, you had never heard of it and you couldn’t care less. Al Gore didn’t invent global warming, you know.

I remember laughing about the coming Ice Ace in the early 1980s (& yeah, I was about 7 years old, & I still knew an idiot scam when I heard one), & almost a full decade before Gore became the figurehead of the ridiculous warmist cult I was rolling my eyes at their “carbon dioxide is a pollutant” nonsense. You know that Limbaugh was talking about this stuff in c.1993? Well, did you, punk?

So who are you accusing of being born yesterday, child?

I’m convinced this is a SNL parody, What a maroon.

Al Gore didn’t invent global warming, you know.

Don’t tell him that or you will break his King Midas heart.

Just because conservatives can find the occasional skeptic doesn’t mean the entire global warming theory is bogus.

Occasional skeptic? You have got to be kidding.

Global warming is regarded by the sheeple as true, by those who can think for themselves as false and by the power mad and money grubbers as … … useful … … very useful in their pathological quest to filch ever more money and power to themselves.

Do I ask a chiropractor about heart surgery?

As dumb as that would be it wouldn’t be nearly as dumb as asking Al Gore about the climate. Best not to ask him about the temperature a few miles below the surface of the earth either.

Those screaming about some global HOAX have their tin foil wrapped too tight.

It is a hoax on a far grander scale than Charles Dawson’s Piltdown man ever was.

If it is bunk, that will be proven as time goes on.

Ten years now and no Global Warming and actually a bit of Global Cooling. If that has not registered with someone then they are comatose.
