Rasmussen: Obama drops to lowest approval rating
posted at 11:36 am on November 24, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Give Rasmussen a lot of credit thus far in the Obama Era. They predicted his decline first, have documented his rallies, and now report on the nadir of his standing among registered voters. In their daily tracking poll, Barack Obama dropped to a 45% approval rating, tying the lowest mark of his term thus far, and hit a new record on their “passion index”:
The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Tuesday shows that 27% of the nation’s voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Forty-two percent (42%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -15. This is the lowest Approval Index rating yet measured for President Obama[.]
And, as always, independents are the key:
Fifty-two percent (52%) of Democrats Strongly Approve while 68% of Republicans Strongly Disapprove. Among those not affiliated with either major political party, just 16% Strongly Approve and 51% Strongly Disapprove[.]
A 45/54 split in the first year in office isn’t exactly the “hope and change” Obama had in mind. The intensity of his opposition has long eclipsed the intensity of his support, but the number among independents should be alarming for Capitol Hill Democrats facing the voters in 2010. A solid majority of independents now strongly disapprove of Obama, and only a sixth of them strongly approve. Democrats know what that means for a midterm that will serve as a referendum on the President and their legislative agenda.
Byron York looks at the internals from Gallup’s tracking polls, where Obama is also under 50% among adults:
Among age groups: For the first time in the White House, Obama is below 50 percent with every age group of Americans except those between 18 and 29. He’s at 48 percent with people in the 30-49 range; 46 percent with people in the 50-64 range; and 42 percent with people 65 and over. Among those 18-29, he’s at 61 percent. …
Among income groups: For the first time in the White House, Obama is below 50 percent with every income group except those making less than $2,000 a month. He’s at 49 percent among those making $2,000 to $4,999 a month; 44 percent among those making $5,000 to $7,499 a month; and 48 percent among those making $7,500 and more a month. Among the bottom income group, those making less than $2,000 a month, Obama’s approval rating is 59 percent.
There’s more at the link, but basically Obama’s collapse is broad based and almost complete. He only polls favorably among the youngest adults (18-29), the lowest income levels, the non-religious, and non-white adults. It’s basically a portrait of the hard Left, which is exactly what his agenda represents, and the only political core he’s got. And if he sends more troops to Afghanistan, even some of these numbers may start to fall.

I wonder what happens when he reaches the low 30s like BOOOOOOSH.
How will they spin that in the MSM?

I’m sorry, I wish I could get excited about this, but I can’t. With the mess we have in this country these numbers should be much, much lower.

obama’s mistake is he forget that he is the President of ALL of AMerica not just the 52% that voted for him or the 30% of die hard supporters. He has not done one thing in the last 10 months for the 48% who did not vote for him. In fact he has tried to slam those 48% everyday. that is not a leader that is a politician

Barry’s approval ratings are like his bows. How low can he go?
Christien on November 24, 2009 at 12:23 PM
I’m not sure Obama CAN be driven to the center. He seems to be so egotistical and convinced of his own wisdom and ability to persuade by his words that, even if Republicans did win the majority in the House in 2010, he would probably spend 2011-12 vetoing everything they tried to enact, and telling people that he “won”, and blaming the House Republicans for obstruction.
Bill Clinton, after Republicans took over the House in 1994, knew that his political survival required governing from the center, and voters re-elected both Clinton and the Republican House in 1996. Clinton knew that, because he had lost the Governor’s race in Arkansas after two years on the job, and remodeled himself as a centrist to win back the Governor’s mansion two years later.
Obama has never known political failure, having come from a State Senate district and state where Chicago rules and crushes all opposition. He probably honestly believes all the glowing praises about himself from the Jeremiah Wrights and Louis Farrakhans of the world, and believes that anyone who opposes him must be unenlightened and stupid, or racist. Even if Republicans did take the House in 2010, Obama would try to push his radical agenda while his approval ratings reached the 20′s and his disapproval hit the 60′s. He cannot admit a mistake.
Steve Z on November 24, 2009 at 12:23 PM
Well, that really wasn’t so hard to predict.
Anyone with half a brain knew that he would never be able to keep any of his empty promises, given his convoluted positions and lack of understanding on just about every issue. Sooner or later, his supporters on the left were sure to become disillusioned with all that talk of “hope and change” that the rest of us know was BS to begin with.
UltimateBob on November 24, 2009 at 12:24 PM
Whatever he loses from your list will be more than replaced by the “illegals-given-amnesty” vote. As part of the amnesty, they’ll be required to submit completed write-in ballots well in advance of the 2010 and 2012 elections.

kingsjester on November 24, 2009 at 12:25 PM
The problem is the media never covered things objectively.
So in the Bush era a $250B deficit was horrible and a 4.5% unemployment rate a sign of a poor economy.
In the Obama era a $2T (or more) deficit is a small concern and 17.5% unemployment no biggie.
Now people are catching on, but slowly. So someone loses the job he’s had since 2004 and can’t find another one and it dawns on him that maybe he was sold a bill of goods by the media. But his friend who works for the state? He’s not losing his job, and Obama probably just helped him get a raise…

I think Rasmussen usually polls too conservative, but it does show the trend.
The distinction between “hate the policies” “like the man” are starting to be blurred.
That was actually inevitable. They are, afterall, his policies.
I think the Holder decision pushed people into a bit more honesty. Ditto for dithering on Afghanastan. I am not sure it’s legitimate, but people do think that the lack of support is harming troops. I presume McCrystal is a good general and wouldn’t actually do that. But I think public perception on this has been very bad.
And, I think, HCR has been a huge failure. Huge.
Its pretty much over. The Dems voted in their insider. It was a very misguided decision, from the moment Kennedy backed him.
But….no turning back.

another thread hijacked by a Ann in Moron
Rasmussen polls ‘likely voters’–and you don’t even know what that is. If you’ve voted in two of the last three national elections and say you intend to vote in the next one, you’re a ‘likely voter’.
Likely Voters are proven to be more Republican than the general adult population. Don’t you ever know anything?
Janos Hunyadi on November 24, 2009 at 12:31 PM
Like I said, we all get it, dear.
AnninCA on November 24, 2009 at 12:35 PM
That is simply not true. ACORN pays for votes also. In states without a voter ID law, anyone who knows the proper name and district the registration was made with can come in and vote on that registration. Some get stopped but most do not.
Johnnyreb on November 24, 2009 at 12:35 PM
add free loaders to that list.
capejasmine on November 24, 2009 at 12:35 PM
Well, it’s way too soon to know what’s going to be a likely voter. That’s the problem all the pollsters are having, of course.
They are all skewed a bit this way or that because we’re in extreme flux.
AnninCA on November 24, 2009 at 12:36 PM
“Ann” practices the Art of Downplaying, which you might notice the CrapBag Media also doing: Whenever a lib or Dem screws up or looks bad, she/it and the Media spin out garbage which downplays the negative aspects
‘Downplaying’ uses false comparisons, straw man arguments, and outright lies–so save your breath
Janos Hunyadi on November 24, 2009 at 12:39 PM
Well, I can’t see ACORN actually turning out fake voters to a big degree. My “take” is that they drive up the registration votes and then skew the polls. That’s a bit like paying them for PR.
Even the expose tapes? They seem extraordinarily incompetent, mostly.
I can’t get behind the conspiracy think on that group. What is absurd to me is that they have gotten by with such shoddy practices for years. It actually speaks very poorly of Democrats from a financial viewpoint. You pay that much for a bit of PR?
If you’d like to know who I honestly do think is competent enough to throw elections?
It’s SEIU.

Janos Hunyadi on November 24, 2009 at 12:41 PM
Rassmussen leans conservative? When a dem was in the lead in polls, they reported it. Scott practically called the election, based on his polls, days before the outcome. He could see how it was trending, and can see how it’s trending now. As always though, polls aren’t the be all, end all, nor the absolute in anything. They are simply, polls.
As for Holder. I think we all know he didn’t make this decision, Obama did. And we all know why. This isn’t about trying terrorists. This is about putting Bush, Cheney, Rove, and the CIA on trial. It will put troops in danger, and go to a base near you, and ask some of the soldiers there, if any of this isn’t hurting them, and their morale!!!
I know what I read from your comments Ann, but far left is who you are…and you really don’t hide it well. Don’t try to pretend. Just be who you are. You know where we stand, we know where you stand. How’s that for honesty?!?
capejasmine on November 24, 2009 at 12:43 PM

AnninCA on November 24, 2009 at 12:44 PM
I don’t believe Barry is as deft at triangulating as Bill was. And I don’t think Bill ever really went to the center, but merely used the triangulating strategy to save his job.
Unless we Republicans really go at one another’s throats through November, which we have a history of doing, I believe we will take the House, perhaps even by a comfortable margin. Retaking the Senate is no longer unimaginable. Thanks, Barry!
I still think Obama will likely be re-elected. It’s very difficult to defeat an incumbent president. They really have to defeat themselves. But if any president can do it, Barry is The One.
Then again, if we use our power in the next Congress to impeach him, and waste a lot of time venting our anger, we too could cause a lot of damage to ourselves and help Barry squeak through in 2012.

I just watch polls for trends. I’m not one to get excited or discouraged, unless it’s a clear trend.
I don’t think polling is remotely able to really guage people and their voting choices, yet.
The questions are often ham-handed. So you get mixed messages.
I think people do know, however, by the time they vote what is and isn’t important to them on an instinctual level.

I think those of you who stated that the media is influencing the results of these polls are correct but I still find the end result disheartening. Conservatives have the number one cable news network, talk radio, bestsellers and still this vile excuse for a man (sorry, after his immediate remarks after the Fort Hood massacre that’s the best I can do) is still polling with favorables in the upper 40′s and 50′s, depending on the poll.
And I think those who have said that this man doesn’t care about polls is correct as well–all this administration wants to do is ram its policies through asap and then subsequent elections won’t matter because all of their new policies will insure Democrat victories.
Ack–don’t mind me. It’s a gray, miserable day here in RI and I’m just in a mood.

That’s about right. The floor for Obama is somewhere around 30%, plus or minus 5%, because blacks will continue to support him even no matter WHAT he does because of the color of his skin to the tune of 80-90%. There are about an equal number of hard leftists and morons are out there to give him about 30% no matter what.
About the only way he hits the 20′s is if he actually TRIES to raise his numbers, such as being tough in Afghanistan, or lowering taxes and trying to actually bring the economy back. Most blacks will still follow him like lemmings but he will alienate the hard left. He’s lost the center and the right for good.
The bottom line is this is what you get when you elect a neophyte leftist empty suit as President.
