Rasmussen: Obama drops to lowest approval rating

posted at 11:36 am on November 24, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

Give Rasmussen a lot of credit thus far in the Obama Era.  They predicted his decline first, have documented his rallies, and now report on the nadir of his standing among registered voters.  In their daily tracking poll, Barack Obama dropped to a 45% approval rating, tying the lowest mark of his term thus far, and hit a new record on their “passion index”:

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Tuesday shows that 27% of the nation’s voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Forty-two percent (42%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -15. This is the lowest Approval Index rating yet measured for President Obama[.]

And, as always, independents are the key:

Fifty-two percent (52%) of Democrats Strongly Approve while 68% of Republicans Strongly Disapprove. Among those not affiliated with either major political party, just 16% Strongly Approve and 51% Strongly Disapprove[.]

A 45/54 split in the first year in office isn’t exactly the “hope and change” Obama had in mind. The intensity of his opposition has long eclipsed the intensity of his support, but the number among independents should be alarming for Capitol Hill Democrats facing the voters in 2010. A solid majority of independents now strongly disapprove of Obama, and only a sixth of them strongly approve. Democrats know what that means for a midterm that will serve as a referendum on the President and their legislative agenda.

Byron York looks at the internals from Gallup’s tracking polls, where Obama is also under 50% among adults:

Among age groups: For the first time in the White House, Obama is below 50 percent with every age group of Americans except those between 18 and 29. He’s at 48 percent with people in the 30-49 range; 46 percent with people in the 50-64 range; and 42 percent with people 65 and over. Among those 18-29, he’s at 61 percent. …

Among income groups: For the first time in the White House, Obama is below 50 percent with every income group except those making less than $2,000 a month. He’s at 49 percent among those making $2,000 to $4,999 a month; 44 percent among those making $5,000 to $7,499 a month; and 48 percent among those making $7,500 and more a month. Among the bottom income group, those making less than $2,000 a month, Obama’s approval rating is 59 percent.

There’s more at the link, but basically Obama’s collapse is broad based and almost complete. He only polls favorably among the youngest adults (18-29), the lowest income levels, the non-religious, and non-white adults. It’s basically a portrait of the hard Left, which is exactly what his agenda represents, and the only political core he’s got. And if he sends more troops to Afghanistan, even some of these numbers may start to fall.

The American public is rightly upset with the administration since we have not passed meaningful health reform. Once health care reform passes, you will see those number shoot up.

The only that can save this presidency is a republican led congress in 2010.
It will be interesting to see how much effort he puts into campaigning knowing he really needs a GOP house to drive him to the center.

27% of the nation’s voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President.

I believe African Americans comprise something like 11-13% of the population. Assuming at least 90% support for Obowma among them, that means only something like 15-20% approval among non-blacks. Ouch.

I think Rasmussen is going to have to come up with some new indicator. Right now, Obamanation is at +3% on the I like you somewhat/I really don’t like you Index (45% approve at least somewhat vs. 42% strong disapproval).

Also note that the Gallup was taken over a weekend, which skews the sample even worse in the liberal direction.

It’s basically a portrait of the hard Left, which is exactly what his agenda represents, and the only political core he’s got. And if he sends more troops to Afghanistan, even some of these numbers may start to fall.

If true that would mean that somewhere around 45% of the nation is hard left. I’m not sure I buy that conclusion and would fully expect to see those numbers drop when some of the favored groups start feeling the tax pinch from the filthy lying coward’s spending spree, high unemployment, and declining standard of living. Personally I think the bottom for Obama is around 35%

a capella on November 24, 2009 at 11:51 AM

He won…for about 9 months.
Don’t forget, this is a man who was obsessed with polls. They said it spend hours every day analyzing those poll number…this must be driving him crazy.
Here is his dilemma, if he pursues higher numbers he alienates his core, since his policies are so extreme…but if he keeps on with his agenda, he will bottom out at under 30%.
Can he afford to give up 15%, on a gamble to get 25% more?
I don’t think so, he will fight to secure his core, his very liberal core base, since shifting would have an immediate backlash, and a long time to regain that loss of base.
He doesn’t have the aptitude to wage a tough battle, he needs instant gratification…so the push for health care and other reform will be even greater.

peski on November 24, 2009 at 11:44 AM

That’s strong approval. His total approval among likely voters is still 45%…

The key here is his overall disapproval among registered voters at 55%. I think that is a new high, and was only ~52% when he hit 45% back in August.

He is losing the middle. If this continues – the “left” begins to fracture.

That’s pretty scary. If he’s at 53% in California, then he’s screwed. That’s about as blue a state as there is in this country.

I’m not surprised he’s at 45%. I knew the moment unemployment hit double-figures, he’d be stuck below 50% permanently. He’ll drop into the 30’s if they ram health care through and unemployment rises to 11-12%.

Ferraro, a Democrat, took such heat in the election for saying the obvious truth. She was speaking to a very minor group in Orange County, but the story, if you recall, grew legs when it was picked up and turned into some national scandal.

Really, she said what everyone knew but many were unwilling to yet admit.

Obama was elected in the eye of a perfect storm. Everyone in the country was sick of Bush, even Bushies. Did the country really want to flip back to a Clinton? Hillary took quite a while to find the right tone with populism, remember. Once she did, she was knocking it out of the park. Just like Palin is now.

But Obama? Obama was alluring. A black candidate who could validate once and for all that we’re not a nation of racists.

Someone with no record. Ah, sweet music.

Someone with obvious political skills. Surely that’ll translate, right?

Someone who looks good. We do love our leaders to look hip, slick, and cool. After all, we’re coming out of an era when Hummers were actually considered family cars!

He only polls favorably among the youngest adults (18-29), the lowest income levels, the non-religious, and non-white adults.
Once those youngsters realize they will be saddled with his debt for the rest of their lives maybe they too will wise up.

Unfortunately, far too may of “those youngsters” can’t see past their next welfare check!

I think ACORN messes with registration, but nah*….the voter fraud story strikes me a conspiracy thinking.

Just my 2 cents. They are interfering badly with registration process, however.

He is losing the middle. If this continues – the “left” begins to fracture.

Then, there will only be one trick left in their bag to retain power: encourage a conservative third party movement.

Well, Sarah has already nixed that idea. But did anyone notice this odd Beck/Palin deal from Fox lately?

Who are they kidding? She didn’t even give Beck an interview! She was polite and gave him credit where it’s due.

But I found that odd. Are they seriously pushing this? And that is, btw, going too far.

I knew he was going to be leaving office unpopular but I never would have guessed that the swing from the gushing popularity of 1/20/09 would be just a memory by Thanksgiving. When was the last time somebody got up at a press conference and asked him for a house or job? The filthy lying coward’s biggest problem these days is that nobody believes the lies.
