CBS: East Anglia CRU covered up bad data, computer modeling

posted at 2:55 pm on November 24, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Declan McCullough dives into the East Anglia CRU exposure and delivers a well-researched and fair look at the controversy for CBS News.  McCullough looks at the various e-mails, including portions that have not yet gotten much attention from the media, and concludes that the CRU has acted without transparency.  He also shows why the data itself has become suspect, as well as the modeling on which anthropogenic global-warming activists rely for stoking public demand for action:

As the leaked messages, and especially the HARRY_READ_ME.txt file, found their way around technical circles, two things happened: first, programmers unaffiliated with East Anglia started taking a close look at the quality of the CRU’s code, and second, they began to feel sympathetic for anyone who had to spend three years (including working weekends) trying to make sense of code that appeared to be undocumented and buggy, while representing the core of CRU’s climate model.

One programmer highlighted the error of relying on computer code that, if it generates an error message, continues as if nothing untoward ever occurred. Another debugged the code by pointing out why the output of a calculation that should always generate a positive number was incorrectly generating a negative one. A third concluded: “I feel for this guy. He’s obviously spent years trying to get data from undocumented and completely messy sources.”

Programmer-written comments inserted into CRU’s Fortran code have drawn fire as well. The file briffa_sep98_d.pro says: “Apply a VERY ARTIFICAL correction for decline!!” and “APPLY ARTIFICIAL CORRECTION.” Another, quantify_tsdcal.pro, says: “Low pass filtering at century and longer time scales never gets rid of the trend – so eventually I start to scale down the 120-yr low pass time series to mimic the effect of removing/adding longer time scales!”

While much of the attention has focused on CRU director Phil Jones and his messages about “hiding the decline,” McCullough focuses more attention on this:

I am seriously worried that our flagship gridded data product is produced by Delaunay triangulation – apparently linear as well. As far as I can see, this renders the station counts totally meaningless. It also means that we cannot say exactly how the gridded data is arrived at from a statistical perspective – since we’re using an off-the-shelf product that isn’t documented sufficiently to say that. Why this wasn’t coded up in Fortran I don’t know – time pressures perhaps? Was too much effort expended on homogenisation, that there wasn’t enough time to write a gridding procedure? Of course, it’s too late for me to fix it too. Meh.

I am very sorry to report that the rest of the databases seem to be in nearly as poor a state as Australia was. There are hundreds if not thousands of pairs of dummy stations, one with no WMO and one with, usually overlapping and with the same station name and very similar coordinates. I know it could be old and new stations, but why such large overlaps if that’s the case? Aarrggghhh! There truly is no end in sight… So, we can have a proper result, but only by including a load of garbage!

One thing that’s unsettling is that many of the assigned WMo codes for Canadian stations do not return any hits with a web search. Usually the country’s met office, or at least the Weather Underground, show up – but for these stations, nothing at all. Makes me wonder if these are long-discontinued, or were even invented somewhere other than Canada!

Knowing how long it takes to debug this suite – the experiment endeth here. The option (like all the anomdtb options) is totally undocumented so we’ll never know what we lost. 22. Right, time to stop pussyfooting around the niceties of Tim’s labyrinthine software suites – let’s have a go at producing CRU TS 3.0!since failing to do that will be the definitive failure of the entire project.

Ulp! I am seriously close to giving up, again. The history of this is so complex that I can’t get far enough into it before by head hurts and I have to stop. Each parameter has a tortuous history of manual and semi-automated interventions that I simply cannot just go back to early versions and run the update prog. I could be throwing away all kinds of corrections – to lat/lons, to WMOs (yes!), and more. So what the hell can I do about all these duplicate stations?…

If that looks like the CRU relied on unreliable data sets, bad computer models, and a desire to reach a conclusion rather than do actual science, you’re not alone.  McCullough concludes:

The irony of this situation is that most of us expect science to be conducted in the open, without unpublished secret data, hidden agendas, and computer programs of dubious reliability. East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit might have avoided this snafu by publicly disclosing as much as possible at every step of the way.

Most critics of AGW advocacy have never considered it science in the first place.  This just shows that we were right; it’s a religious belief, and its high priests apparently have few scruples about rigging the models and the data to show what they want, rather than pursue science and the scientific method.  Be sure to read all of Declan’s lengthy and excellent article.

Now — when will CBS put this on their Evening News?  Or will they have to bump this for Katie Couric’s Poetry Corner?

It doesn\’t actually prove that AGW isn\’t real. (I happen to think it is not real, btw.) This is but one group. And, suggests that they have been getting the science backwards. I’d like to remind everyone that based on these stupid lies about AGW, our “leaders” in Congress outlawed the incandescent light bulb. That’s how invasive and liberty killing many of the Federal actions have been, being justified upon the hysteria surrounding what is now known to be a hoax. We have allowed so much wealth to be stolen, we have restricted so much growth in the energy sector, and we have justified horrible redistributive systems based on this farce. People need to be jailed, and the GOP needs to push this in the face of Pelosi and Co. every chance they get.

CRU has released several statements over the last few days about this situation.

Today’s release double’s down on how the information was obtained illegally, how their stuff has been taken out of context, etc.

The big take away is that CRU is playing the victim card. They have stated they will look at the security of their computer systems, but there is no mention about the substance of the data released.

Of course, what do we expect, that they would come out and say, “Yep, we;ve been fudging for at least ten years.” These people haven’t the integrity to deal with any of the available data now other than to play victim.

If the science is Supposed to be settled, and there is a Clear trend in the data sets and the results of the analysis.
These results should have been able to be reproduced by others in the world using similar data sources and the same analysis or the same data and similar analysis.

If this isn’t the case, then the conclusions should be especially suspect.
Why isn\’t that the case?

Poorly designed computer code reaches a state of chaos such as no one mind can comprehend it all. It then becomes something of a giant black-box (Gordian Knot) resembling a finite-state machine that soon takes on a personality of its own.

I would think that these “scientist/programmers” should be forced to conform to established GLP practices with so much riding on the outcome.

The models (energy balances) employed are dubious enough (in and of themselves) but surely there are untold flaws introduced in getting the sloppy code to represent the actual Mathematical Model, which at best is a guess in the first place.

The use of Fortran is a sure sign that they are in the dark ages and are using Legacy code which has become bloated beyond recognition. I have lived through similar scenarios and it is best to start de Novo with a clean slate.

What a fiasco.

Johan Klaus on November 24, 2009 at 3:39 PM

Excuse me… but if you can proove that evidence is tainted, it must be thrown out.

This has been, from the start, BAD science. Some of us have been sayin so for years.

Many of the “Weather” stations this data is from have been prooven to be poorly sited… Cities have grown up around them…

They then take that data, and “Norm” it (change it) through a process they will not explain.

They then, as shown by these emails and code, change data sets in mid run, emphasizing some, throwing others out, to get the results they want.

They will not show the code, nor the RAW data they use (and yes, they have been asked time and again by reputably scientists).

NONE of their “climate models” have ever made an accurate prediction…

So, if their science is tainted… why is it suddenly up to us to DISPROOVE their assertion? Isn’t it THEIR job to Proove they are Correct? THEY are the ones accusing Mankind of changing the climate… THEY are the accuser… Thus you put the Burden of proof on the WRONG SIDE! You are using the French legal system meme, where once at trial you are pretty much guily UNTIL prooven innocent!

Well if nothing else, I’m glad to see the FORTRAN language is still alive and kicking. Don’t think I’ve coded anything in FORTRAN in 25 years.

I can still vividly recall my hot Chinese Fortran3 teacher explaining “funksunsubpogam” (function sub-program) techniques. My focus was on do-loops…

http://www.junkscience.com/ is saying it wasn’t hacking at all, just a premature release of materials prepared in order to respond to a Freedom of Information request.

And now, to the media’s retraction.

Sorry, I was being sarcastic.

I believe this revelation is a gift from God.

This is definitely going to leave a mark. Of course Congress will swear they’ve been duped and perhaps they have. All too willingly though. But they can just BACK OFF all this green-jobs BS. It’s all been about a money and power grab.

This entire global warming, going green BS has enabled the people in CA to dam up water to protect that stupid little smelt and yet bankrupt farmers. No more “lightbulb” talk. No more “poor polar bears.” And if we’re not saving the polar bears, then perhaps we might be able to drill for our freaking oil?! Maybe? I’m telling you, this hoax runs wide and deep.

We have to stay on this and demand answers. Perhaps we should march to DC about this too if they don’t back off of it. Ha, imagine India and China even thinking about Kyoto protocol. By gosh BHO better not even consider it.

The data is tainted and it couldn’t stand up in a court of law so why should the USA and the rest of the world change our way of living because of it. It’s horse crap.

I like how he links to RealClimate.org as a source of denial and an interview of Michael Mann. Might we also ask the murderer if he’s guilty as well?

Fraudulent global warming statistics.
Fraudulent jobs saved or created statistics
Fraudulent GNP statistics

PackerBronco on November 24, 2009 at 3:29 PM

I think that Samuel Clemens had a good quote about tainted statistics: “Figures often beguile me, particularly when I have the arranging of them myself; in which case the remark attributed to Disraeli would often apply with justice and force: ‘There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics.’”

Johan Klaus on November 24, 2009 at 3:57 PM

And yet today my favorite Reuters Environmental Correspondent says that “Global warming is accelerating”.

I wonder if this is the same code they were using to predict global cooling?

And NO, I am NOT kidding!

To the media, other than Fox, the only story so far has been the hacking, not the fraud. And the CRU’s response has only been to discuss the hacking and not comment on the emails themselves. Their credibility is damaged even more by not stating up front that this was an officially prepared set of emails that was leaked.

No wonder so many people get their news from Fox. This is a huge scoop for them.

Will Newt and the botox wonder have a sit down about this? I’m sure he is asking for a re-set (sit) button. The winds are a changin’ and the windmill is facing the wrong direction.
