Bush strategist: Don’t write off Sarah Palin for 2012

posted at 2:20 pm on November 24, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

While Maureen Dowd indulges herself in bashing Sarah Palin, Matthew Dowd (no relation) says that predictions of her political demise are highly premature.  George W. Bush’s strategist was a Palin skeptic during the campaign, but says the media have been too quick to write her off for the next presidential cycle.   In today’s Washington Post, Dowd lays out how Palin can win the nomination — and possibly the White House:

First, Gallup polls over the past 60 years show that no president with an approval rating under 47 percent has won reelection, and no president with an approval rating above 51 percent has lost reelection. (George W. Bush’s approval rating in the weeks before the 2004 election hovered around 50 percent.) The 2012 election will be primarily about our current president and whether voters are satisfied with the country’s direction.

Who the Republican candidate is, and his or her qualifications and abilities, will matter only if Obama’s approval rating is between 47 and 51 percent going into the fall of 2012. Interestingly, in the latest Gallup poll Obama’s approval rating was at a precarious 49 percent.

Second, America is still (unfortunately) politically divided and polarized, and Palin benefits from this dynamic. While Democrats love Obama, Republicans look on him with real disfavor. The gap between Obama’s approval rating among Democrats and among Republicans is nearly 70 percentage points — a higher partisan divide than either Bill Clinton or George W. Bush experienced. Obama’s agenda and actions this year, and some mistakes, have solidified this divide.

Polls show that Palin’s favorability numbers are a mirror image of those of Obama. She is respected and loved by the Republican base, while Democrats despise her. Granted, independent voters have significant reservations about her capability to be president, and this would be a hurdle in the general election. But to win the Republican nomination, Palin needs only to get enough support from the base to win early key states. Already, in nearly every poll today, she has a level of support that makes her a viable primary candidate. Just look at the crowds and the buzz her book tour is drawing.

What makes this more interesting is that Dowd says he would likely oppose Palin in the primaries, but doesn’t get hysterical about her.  Instead, Dowd lays out a fairly compelling case that the Republican nominee may be more or less irrelevant in 2012.  What will be relevant is Barack Obama.  If his approval ratings continue to slide, he won’t get re-elected anyway.  If they improve by 2012, he’s unlikely to lose a national election.  When a President stands for re-election, the voters either approve the first term or end the Presidency.

But Dowd and others miss the point a bit, too.  The 2012 elections are still three years away, and even the heavy lifting for the nomination won’t begin for at least 14 months.  The key is the midterm elections and how the 2012 hopefuls play in the field. How will Mike Huckabee, Mitt Romney, Palin, Tim Pawlenty, and others work to get Republicans elected to Congress?  Who will they endorse, who will they avoid, and which districts will they work?  After the election, we will have plenty of data on reach, depth, and the rest.

In fact, it would be a good idea for Republicans to stop getting distracted by 2012 altogether.  But at least we can follow Matthew Dowd’s lead and keep all options open for the meantime.  We also need to keep focused on the referendum quality of both the 2010 and 2012 elections, because that is what will ultimately drive success or failure.

Its not intelligence or pseudo-intellectualism that we need in office, but plain street smarts. In other words, “common sense.” There hasn’t been a lot of that going on in Washington for a long time.

This is so untrue of Palin and her supporters as to be almost libelous.
Not only is Palin the farthest thing from a narcissist, but what has struck me about her supporters from watching them being interviewed at her book signings is that a good deal of them are not only incredibly coherent, but quite articulate and conversant on the issues.

Furthermore, as I have said in the past, the one thing Obama has not yet done is campaign to be re-elected! His whole political life he has campaigned as the outsider against the incumbent! He never had to run on his record because he never before actually government anything! His biggest Ace card in the last election was that he was historical! And guess what?? voxpopuli on November 24, 2009 at 5:18 PM

Intelligence/intellectualism and common sense certainly do NOT go hand in hand.

Some of the dumbest people I know have little letters behind their name. They can tell you how the universe got started, but no way can they haggle at a flea market, buy wisely at a grocery store or negotiate time outs with their kids.

I’m a two time college grad, married to a plumber. I often wish I had less book learning and more common sense. Book learning gets in the way of sensible decision making more often than not.

voxpopuli on November 24, 2009 at 5:12 PM

I have no idea why people support Ron Paul.

As for those of us who love Sarah Palin, she not only heartily embraces Conservative principles and values, she lives them and puts them into practice!
Her record in public office has been outstanding.

Jenfidel on November 24, 2009 at 5:30 PM

Look, here’s the deal, and this is why Sarah will win the nomination and the presidency.

Sarah will get out and work her tush off for Conservatives all over the country in 2010. She will support them on her one million plus strong Facebook site, and she will get out on the stump.

We’ve already seen what the other so-called “front runners” will do.

T-Paw will stick his finger in the wind to figure out which way to go, long after the leaders have went all in. And his endorsement will be meaningless.

Huckabee won’t endorse, or help anyone, but he’ll still try to get credit for “agreeing” with the principles of the candidate.” (see the Hoffman campaign)

And RomneyCare, well, he’s been AWOL, except for absolute sure winners, where he brings nothing, except to say “me too.”

You can bet your ass that Sarah will chose a candidate, chose wisely, then go all in.

THIS is why she will win the nomination. Sarah will be a driving force behind the Conservative take over of congress.

And trust me, if the American people don’t storm Washington between now and 2012, and remove Obama at gunpoint, which is highly possible, especially if things keep crashing, Obama will be voted out in 2012.

There will be no Obama past January 20, 2013.

The “quitter” meme is an old, tired one of the Left.

Governor Palin resigned because she was besieged by an endless barrage of bogus ethics charges made by her political enemies (most of which was financed & supported by the Obowma White House) which made it almost impossible for her to govern and which was sending her into personal bankruptcy.
I trust her judgement when it comes to why she resigned.
In addition, she had already accomplished most of what she set out to do as Governor anyway.

Instead, she’s written a book and gone on a nationwide tour and she’s not afraid to say things in public and in nationally televised interviews in which she not only admits to mistakes but in which she also takes Obowma on, on current issues and affairs.
She is, quite clearly, not a quitter, but a lady with determination and guts who has a “servant’s heart” and an abiding love of this country.

Intellectualism is largely useless outside the walls of universities and a handful of Parisian cafes. Intelligence, OTOH, is a desirable trait in a leader (among many others), and Sarah Palin is intelligent. Stupid people don’t run governments.

That was probably a poor choice of words: There are plenty of stupid people working in government, of course. I do not believe, however, that people are able to run for higher offices and win and not have at least above-average intelligence.

NoLeftTurn on November 24, 2009 at 6:02 PM

NOT the line that was being tossed around yesterday. Check yesterday’s QOTD.

Would you stop yapping about his other thread and focus on this thread, please?

And as for THIS line, well, governmental expense is just a cost of doing business. If she is so wonderful, surely the benefits and blessings to the State should outweigh the savings from avoiding frivolous lawsuits?

Governor Palin negotiated a $40 billion pipeline contract for Alaska, but defending the ethics charges came out of her personal pocket and she’s not a rich woman.

And what kind of lesson does it teach, that you can oust a leader, using frivolous lawsuits?

Pardon me but that’s the dumbest thing I’ve heard.

voxpopuli on November 24, 2009 at 5:59 PM

It teaches a bad lesson, but then that’s Democrats and Liberals for you–using government for bad ends to acquire more illegitimate power.

BTW, I’ll never vote for Mittens unless I absolutely have to.
He’s a RINO loser and flip-flopper (and no intellectual).

Jenfidel on November 24, 2009 at 6:04 PM

voxpopuli on November 24, 2009 at 5:52 PM

LOL You think *I’M* bad? Never forget, I’m on YOUR side — generally speaking. All this, and more, will the Queen of Quit have to deal with from TRUE opponents if she does decide to make a run. These eggshells the Fans think you can walk on are a fantasy . . . a total fantasy.

voxpopuli on November 24, 2009 at 6:06 PM

It was my understanding they did not win that fight.

If you knew about it, then why did you ask that question?

If you have a link or something to the contrary you would care to offer, I would be happy to look at it and possibly revise my understanding of the facts.

voxpopuli on November 24, 2009 at 6:01 PM

I think by the time Governor Palin was exonerated (again!), the damage had been done because they temporarily shut it down to avoid any more legal problems.
Don’t know if you can still donate to the fund–thank God she’s got the proceeds from the book now.

voxpopuli on November 24, 2009 at 6:06 PM

Wrong again!
Judging from the make-up of the crowds at her book signings this week, indies are ready to hear what Governor Palin has to say.
The issue that’s HUGE among Indies is the fact that Obowma’s a Socialist.
We wish to God he were a quitter–he’s destroying the country, our economy and our foreign policy!

Jenfidel on November 24, 2009 at 6:10 PM

Would you stop yapping about his other thread and focus on this thread, please?

No. As I’ve been saying for 30 minutes now, the Palinistas better get their act together and their story straight on this issue. Otherwise I think the conventional wisdom rightly believes you’re just an annoyance and distraction from conservativism’s larger goals (to the extent it has any).

It teaches a bad lesson, but then that’s Democrats and Liberals for you–using government for bad ends to acquire more illegitimate power.

So that’s your final analysis? She allowed Evil to prevail? Wow, THAT will get them rushing to the ballot boxes!

voxpopuli on November 24, 2009 at 6:10 PM

Voxpopuli: I don’t like thread hijackers. I don’t like HotAir-ists who bother negotiating with hijackers. But it’s here, so let’s go.

Sarah Palin is not a lawyer. She has not been steeped in the trade of lying like the current staffmaster in the WH. The vast majority of the citizens of the US have a very negative view of ambulance chasers, especially when they run for office and and then lie to their public.

The US is sick of the lying from the president and his ilk in DC. The fact that she is not one of them–and is not a lawyer–will only endear her to more voters than the current president. What is wanted more than anything else is a forthright, honest, tell it like it is leader, man or woman. This will be true even if he or she is not as experienced or book-read.

I have the hope that even a people as dumb as ours will figure this one out in three years.

voxpopuli on November 24, 2009 at 5:59 PM

Are you not comprehending?

The democrats studied Alaska’s ethic complaint system and understood that they could tie her up, hamstring her and her adminstration with frivolous complaints. Each one would have to be investigted. In addition, they knew Palin would have to spring for her own counsel.

Palin waited until she had completed the natural gas pipleine deal, which was the last thing on her agenda and completely beat the democrats at their own game while saving Alaska and it’s taxpayers the burden of continuing to pay for investigating bogus complaints coming out at a rate of 1 or 2 a month.

The democrats were left flat footed with the only recourse being calling her a quitter … something you seemed to fall like a lead balloon for.

Not only did Palin beat the democrats at their own game, she freed herself to do exactly what she’s doing now … hammering Obama and his cronies.

It was a brilliant political move that even the democrats couldn’t understand at first. Now they wish they hadn’t hammered her so hard at first and forced her hand. They would much rather have her in Alaska right now then doing what she’s doing.

First off, if you consider discussing Palin in a Palin thread hijacking, you and I probably operate on different levels, and there’s not much communication to be had.

That being said, government is a creature of law and law alone. You damn well better understand the law to run the government. Hello?

“Palinistas,” a/k/a concerned citizens, don’t have to do anything to please you or any other Leftoids.
Deal with that!

I see you’re questioning whether Conservatism even has “larger goals,” while you’re posturing to be a Conservative.
No real Conservative would question Conservatism’s larger goals because we know what they are and Governor Palin talks about them every day.
As Governor and in her other positions in public service, she put them to use and into practice.

She did not “allow evil to prevail.”
She quite rightly saw that she had accomplished most of what she’d set out to do as AK Governor and realized that she would not be able to fully serve or accomplish more if she remained in the governor’s seat and would spend the rest of her term defending against more baseless charges.
In addition, she watched with growing alarm as Maobama has dealt the country one body blow after another and realized that more than just the Conservative citizens of Alaska were in need of her leadership.
If you read her Facebook Notes, it’s obvious that she knows America is in need of her Conservative voice in all 50 states.

What was costing the people of Alaska was that she was having to spend almost all of her time dealing with those suits and was not able to attend to the business of governing the state.

He’s never going to quit whining about it.

Gov. Palin and the rest of us have moved on.
If the Left wants to keep yelling “quitter,” when it’s obvious Sarah brings so much more to the table and infinitely more than Obowma does, even as POTUS, let ‘em stew in “quitter” while they lose elections from 2010 onwards.
Sarah didn’t “quit.”
She resigned and she had compelling reasons.
After that, she’s gone national and she’s the leading voice of the Conservative opposition to the Obama Administration for the foreseeable future.
