University of Minnesota demanding political allegiance for educators?

posted at 2:20 pm on November 23, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Katherine Kersten wonders when dissent became so unpatriotic — and when universities began demanding ideological purity as a prerequisite to attaining a degree.  The University of Minnesota will apparently demand that its education graduates, the future teachers of Minnesota, confess to their own bigotry if they believe in the American dream of equal opportunity as a means to cleanse the Minnesota education system of cultural biases.  It sounds like a page out of communist show trials:

The task group is part of the Teacher Education Redesign Initiative, a multiyear project to change the way future teachers are trained at the U’s flagship campus. The initiative is premised, in part, on the conviction that Minnesota teachers’ lack of “cultural competence” contributes to the poor academic performance of the state’s minority students. Last spring, it charged the task group with coming up with recommendations to change this. In January, planners will review the recommendations and decide how to proceed.

The report advocates making race, class and gender politics the “overarching framework” for all teaching courses at the U. It calls for evaluating future teachers in both coursework and practice teaching based on their willingness to fall into ideological lockstep.

The first step toward “cultural competence,” says the task group, is for future teachers to recognize — and confess — their own bigotry. Anyone familiar with the reeducation camps of China’s Cultural Revolution will recognize the modus operandi.

The task group recommends, for example, that prospective teachers be required to prepare an “autoethnography” report. They must describe their own prejudices and stereotypes, question their “cultural” motives for wishing to become teachers, and take a “cultural intelligence” assessment designed to ferret out their latent racism, classism and other “isms.” They “earn points” for “demonstrating the ability to be self-critical.”

It sounds as though they “earn points” for obsequiously affirming the political biases of the university’s education professors. What’s the point of all these confessions?

The goal of these exercises, in the task group’s words, is to ensure that “future teachers will be able to discuss their own histories and current thinking drawing on notions of white privilege, hegemonic masculinity, heteronormativity, and internalized oppression.”

Future teachers must also recognize and denounce the fundamental injustices at the heart of American society, says the task group. From a historical perspective, they must “understand that … many groups are typically not included” within America’s “celebrated cultural identity,” and that “such exclusion is frequently a result of dissimilarities in power and influence.” In particular, aspiring teachers must be able “to explain how institutional racism works in schools.”

Isn’t the point of teaching to actually teach?  As in, mathematics, reading, and science?  Instead of focusing primarily on educating Minnesota youth, UM wants to indoctrinate teachers into becoming community organizers.  After all, what else are we to conclude when the university states that the biggest priorities in elementary education aren’t illiteracy and scientific ignorance but “heteronormativity,” “hegemonic masculinity,” and “internalized oppression”?

That last example is high irony indeed.  Want to see “internalized oppression”?  This program gives a very good example of it, with its demand of ideological purity as a prerequisite to earning a teaching degree.   The fact that the program’s advocates can’t see the irony of their proposal speaks volumes about Academia in general, and the people in charge of the education program at the University of Minnesota.

With Minnesota students needing teachers who can teach useful skills rather than navel-gazing concepts such as “heteronormativity,” how about we give the political correctness a rest and encourage rather than discourage young men and women to enter the classrooms?   Put aside the Chomsky and Ayers political Kool-Aid, and stick to education.   The only agenda that should be in place is competence.

I feel your pain. I finally left teaching by retiring when the district I was in quit allowing me to teach chemistry. My classes were too hard. Funny thing though was that we had 3 high schools in the district and the vast majority of students who qualified to take 1st year college chemistry came out of my boring classes. The students at the other high schools had lots of fun but were illiterate when it came to knowing the fundamentals of chemistry. Keep up the fight.

Classes taken in schools of education are the equivalent of sitting through a middle school class. They suck big time. Preparing to be a teacher should be through on-the-job training with a competent teacher supervising the work of the trainee.

It’s the blind leading the blind. Where did they think these future educators recieved their obviously inferior competence? It surely came from attending public schools that espoused liberal dominated POV’s. I guarantee that the students are just following in the footsteps of the path that were forced upon them.
When will liberal learn that it is to their detriment that they teach to begin with. Ignorance begets ignorance. Start teach the essentials of math, english and the ethics of reporting the truth during scientific research LOL!

I am constantly having to teach my daughters basic math concepts because the work they bring home often deal with non math concepts.

My wife spends time going over the antiquated multiplication tables that schools have totally abandoned.

A recent homework assignment meant to teach fractions using cups and tbsp asked to develop a recipe for happiness and success. Then she had to reorder the list based on the fractions. The recipe for success had nothing to do with the assignment and instead of focusing on the fractions she was distracted by the recipe.

Another recipe question was what advances have improved life over the last 100 years. At first I thought she was doing a social studies assignment and was shocked and angered to learn it was a math assignment.

Sounds to me like the old guard is in a panic. Remember that the academic leaders of today were the hippies and Marxist of yesterday. I think they fear that all they have work for and the progress they have made in warping young minds will be lost with their passing. This is their way to insure their legacy carries on beyond the grave. I’ve always said that the world will be a better place when the hippies die off and I guess this is just their way to help make sure it will not be.

Now you’ve got me curious. What would be the equation for determining a non-constant rate of speed for one mile? As you say, starts at 0 and going to 160mph. How about a 350z, i.e., 0-60 in 5.4 seconds, assuming, for simplicity, that acceleration would be constant all the way to 160.

What indicates that the problem is not ethnic cultural difference is that many Asian kids, who don’t even speak English when the start school, do very well in Minnesota. And their culture is often much different than what their teacher’s culture is. The minority culture that’s the problem is the newer culture of laziness and disrespect for authority, that’s so common in some minority communities. And just “being sensitive” will have no effect on that. Probably makes it worse.

RBMN on November 23, 2009 at 3:29 PM

Say, maybe the folks with the “lack of cultural competence” are the students who are failing the tests.

That’s a rather insensitive position, I know. But what culture does, say, multiplication belong to, anyway?

To face down stupidity, one must defeat the pervasive yet illegitimate PC powers at play.

To excuse PC indoctrination is to attribute to the success of Marxism.

Don’t assume that Ed’s account of “political allegiance to socialist education” in Minnesota is a unique phenomena in his state. He simply made public what’s going on around his home turf.

Check out your own tax funded schools’ curriculum. You’ll find the same everywhere. Contact your school district spokesperson to find how your locale handles the status quo of PC allegiance. Ayers has been at this since the 1960s.

From a historical perspective, they must “understand that … many groups are typically not included” within America’s “celebrated cultural identity,”

All are invited to partake at the table of American opportunity. Sadly, many do not choose to accept the invitation, instead complaining that the banquet was not brought to their house, or was too hot, or didn’t contain exactly the right amount of pepper.

In less floral language, anyone can succeed in America. All it takes is work.

hawksruleva on November 23, 2009 at 3:36 PM

It is important for an educator to know their own biases to give fair and equal treatment of all students. For instance, someone who is biased against one social/ethnic group may spend less time in class working with that group and not even realize it. By identifying biases within yourself, the idea is that you can not give preference to one group or another, and possibly even structure your interaction with each group differently to maximize effectiveness.

If only that were true. Actually, it’s the opposite. Reasonable people can’t surrender the humanities and social sciences to leftist scum. This is because those fields deal with values. The cultural Marxist pollution will find it’s way into the hard sciences. The post-modern attack on objectivity has already undercut science. Just look at how alledged scientists have whored themselves out to Gorbal Worming. Science requires a base in the humanities grounded on reason and logic. Without that base it will wither away and die. That process has already started.

One of my sons had to “explain his thinking” on simple math problems. One math assignment was researching your family history and designing a coast of arms. “Math”.

My wife took the State math certification test along with the communications test, became a certified math teacher (by taking one day off to take the tests) and went to the school board. Before then, they would not speak to her about curriculum since she wasn’t an “educator”.

where D is distance traveled, T is time, A is the acceleration constant, B is the velocity constant, and C=0, since at Time=0, Distance=0.

How’s that any different than what these Leftists have been doing to our education system over the last 90 years since the days of the Progressive Movement where they said kids shouldn’t do homework, memorize anything, nor do something in a prescribed manner. Since then they’ve downplayed spelling, penmanship, times tables, diagramming sentences, studying, taking personal responsibility and so on.

Now you know why Johnny can’t read…or do math, or understand science, or learn foreign languages, or write effectively, or know geography, or know history…

For those of you convinced that this only happens in the “government schools” remember that there are no special programs for those who want to teach in private schools…they all go to the same colleges. My freshman year of college I had to take a course called “college 100.” It was billed as a course that taught the basics of research, writing, ect.

Instead it was “why you, yes you, are a racist!” Every single paper was about hidden racisim and/or sexism. Bonus points were given if you could figure out a way that you were both racist and sexist and perhaps a homophobe as well.

It was a joke. All the black students in the class thought it was a joke, as did about 50% of the white students. At the end of the course, the other 50% of white students had become the poster children for white guilt.

Over the course of the 4 years, huge race relations issues began to break out. It culminated with a black history month dance that garnered little participation from white students. The president issued a sweeping diatribe lecturing the white students on our lack of cultural sensitivity.

my biggest take away from those years is that if you are looking for racism, you’ll create it. In their efforts to make us more culturally “sensitive” the school created a situation where a real racial schism developed. I see the same thing happening with Obama and co. and our nation.

My guess is that just like the University of Delaware’s racist indoctrination program for residence hall students, and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education’s Orwellian “social justice” requirements, this will be abandoned because the students themselves will rise up against what is nothing more than blatant ideological brainwashing. All it will take is one or two students, along with a few attorneys from the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, and the university will back down. More and more, under the radar, free speech groups are fighting this nonsense and winning.

For every 10 MPH, it will take .9 seconds to reach 160MPH. 160 MPH = 234.66672 feet per second. Therefore it will take 14.4 seconds to reach 160 MPH. one Mile = 5280 feet. 1MPH=1.466667 feet. Linear growth 2MPH=2.933334 feet … 10MPH=14.66667 to a total of 80.666685. for the first .9 seconds. 14.4X80.666685 =1161.600336.

5280-1161.600336=4118.399664/234.66672=17.54997364

Therefore Acceleration to 160 takes 14.4 seconds and finishing takes 17.54997364 seconds for a total of 31.94997364 seconds.

The first rule of solving story problems is not to read too much into the description. Let Occam’s Razor apply. Thus,

GIVEN: |v| = 160 mph
t = 1 min = 60 seconds

FIND: The position at time, t.

APPROACH:

We know from Newton’s 2nd law of motion that the sum of all forces on any object is equal to its mass times its acceleration. If the object is not accelerating (a=0), then
it is either standing still or moving with constant velocity. In this problem, we assume from the given information that the car is moving with constant velocity, but we only know the magnitude of that velocity (speed) and not its direction. However, we can use the following equation:

s(t) = |v|t + s(0)

to solve for the position at any time, t.

Converting the speed of the car into miles per second, we get:

160 mph * (1 hour/3600 seconds) = 0.044 miles/sec.

Substituting our new speed, the time interval, and the original position (assumed to be 0 miles), we get

S(t) = (0.044 mi/sec)*(60 sec.) + 0 mi.
= 2.64 miles.

They will never figure out how inner cities and all major poverty sticken areas which are governed and controlled by liberal democrats and unions have created the very mess they seek to remedy. Must be racism….on their part.

They know what caused the mess — illegitimacy rates among blacks — they just will never talk about it. The left will bang its head against the wall and blame “institutional racism” for the failure of black educational achievement for another 30 years, but they will never, ever address the single issue that has caused all of the generational poverty, crime, inertia, and despair: the normalization of teenage pregnancy in the black community, resulting in the disintegration of the family and the total absence of fathers. If you’re 15 and having your 3rd child in Detroit, you’re just another “single mom.”

It is naive to assume the leftists won’t shut down home schooling in the bat of an eye.

The answer is to agitate and engage in “moral sabotage” (undercut all their moves legally – tie them up in the courts, hire private investigators, sue SEIU under RICO etc. Do all the things they do, only do it for freedom – not oppression.

Meric1837 on November 23, 2009 at 3:26 PM

You have to use calculus for non-constant velocities or accelerations. A car accelerating a constant rate of 1mi/324 sec^2 (what 0-60 in 5.4 seconds equates to) would reach 160 mph in 14.4 seconds. In that time it would travel 0.32 miles. You must first integrate the constant acceleration function 1/324 to get t/324 + C. Since the initial velocity is zero C=0. Set t/324 = 160 to find the time required to reach 160. Integrate again to get t^2/648 + C. Since the initial displacement is 0 C=0. Plug in the value from the first equation to get distance traveled.

Yes… I am a math teacher.

And I fully agree that public schools are a cesspool when it comes to math education. I work at a college so I don’t have to deal with it too much. But many of my students have little to no ability to perform even simple arithmetic tasks. It’s scary. But it’s not always the high schools’ fault. Students are coddled even in college. And don’t get me started on the entitlement issues college students have. Sheesh!

Badger40 on November 23, 2009 at 2:40 PM

I taught Physics for seven years before my son came along. The first six years were in a Catholic high school and I loved it! Even though we didn’t always have the latest and greatest equipment, I had administrative and parental support and quite a free hand with curriculum.

My last year, I got a position in a public school in the International Baccalaurate program teaching both Physics and Chemistry. Was my first real exposure to the political side of teaching. :P

The IB programs were put into the city’s two worst high schools to help bring up demographics/grades. The IB science classes were academically rigorous, but, because of POLITICS, there were quotas for admittance to the program so they’d often ‘overlook’ prerequisites.

So I ended up with a Chemistry class with brilliant kids who could ace damn near anything I could give them and a whole bunch of kids that couldn’t pass crap because they didn’t have the needed math prerequisites but the program needed their particular demographics. :P

Then there were the parents who were CONVINCED that their little precious was brilliant and should have been making A’s in their class and it was all my fault that their darlings were failing. :PPPP

Kirin on November 23, 2009 at 6:28 PM

Classes taken in schools of education are the equivalent of sitting through a middle school class. They suck big time. Preparing to be a teacher should be through on-the-job training with a competent teacher supervising the work of the trainee.

chemman on November 23, 2009 at 3:18 PM

I was fortunate in that my actual degree is in Physics and that I was in graduate school when I decided to become a teacher. So instead of going through the College of Education, I was able to take just the bare minimum ed classes required by the state. The College of Education was NOT happy with me. hehehe But a very understanding prof signed off on my permission to reg for the required internship. :::insert evil laugh here:::

Out of all the classes that were required for certification, only two were actually useful in the classroom…Methods of Science Teaching which taught basic lab organization/management techniques and the Internship that gave me practical teaching experience under the guidance of a terrific physics teacher.

Rest was useless.

When I was in teacher school I had to take a diversity class taught by two administrators in our district whose skin color is different than mine. It was an awful awful class where a group of 20-some-odd adults were being hammered with how we were (most of us, anyway, at least, those who had less melanin in our skin than the instructors did) racist in our thoughts and actions even if we didn’t think we were. We gritted our teeth and sat there and took it, because we had to pass the class to get our credential and we were dealing with vindictive, entitlement-mentality instructors. There was nothing we could do. We complained a lot about it to each other, however, and ripped it in our evaluations.

Our final project was some stupid PC piece of garbage that basically asked us to tell how–once we got our coveted credentials–we resolved to stop being so darned racist for goodness sake you stupid middle-class racist whitebread crackers. I refused to do the project as they instructed, and put my own spin on it instead. I failed it, and went completely ballistic. Raised the roof, and they had to change my grade. I was FURIOUS. I was also quietly cheered by the rest of the class, and we did indeed rip the curriculum, the course, and the instructors in our evals.

I’ve been told “You’re really a republican? I can’t believe you’re a republican. You seem so concerned about education and kids.” I am subjected to semi-regular “teasing” by a couple of coworkers who think they’re clever (they’re not). I’ve had my colleagues PM me about things I’ve posted on FB: “Really?” And much, much more.

So yeah…I believe every word of this.

Well, maybe to start, but that 30K is 100K in 20 years with roughly 85% pension for life and all that for working 180 days out of the year.

Whoa…what district is THAT? I’m transferring today!

Most teachers will never never see six figures. If it’s a well-paying district, they might hit the low nineties, but not many hit the holy grail. I know I never will, and I work in the best paying district in my area. And I work a lot more than 180 days, too. Not on the clock, true, but I do work it.

I’m lucky to work in a district that aggressively acts to remove poor teachers. I’ve known very few, actually.
