Rasmussen: ObamaCare support plunges to new low

posted at 9:30 am on November 23, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

The more people see of ObamaCare and the way Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid have to force it through Congress, the less they like it.  Rasmussen’s latest survey on the legislation shows support for the bill reaching its nadir, 38%, with an 18-point deficit from public opposition,  which is 56%.  It’s the first time in Rasmussen’s surveys of likely voters that support for Barack Obama’s signature agenda item has dropped below 40%:

Just 38% of voters now favor the health care plan proposed by President Obama and congressional Democrats. That’s the lowest level of support measured for the plan in nearly two dozen tracking polls conducted since June.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 56% now oppose the plan.

Half the survey was conducted before the Senate voted late Saturday to begin debate on its version of the legislation. Support for the plan was slightly lower in the half of the survey conducted after the Senate vote.

Prior to this, support for the plan had never fallen below 41%. Last week, support for the plan was at 47%. Two weeks ago, the effort was supported by 45% of voters.

The spread against ObamaCare jumped significantly in the last week, as Harry Reid prepared his version for the Senate. It went from -2%, within the margin of error, to -18%, the largest gap between supporters and opponents.  The previous high had been 15 points at the end of September, with opposition peaked at the current 56%.  The new gap suggests that more core supporters have begun to fall by the wayside.

The big takeaway from the internals is, as always, independent voters.  They are looking a lot more like Republicans on this issue.  Where Republican voters oppose ObamaCare 83/13, independents aren’t far behind at 70/23.  Self-described moderates have fled as well, opposing ObamaCare by almost exactly the overall topline, 55/39.

Majorities of both men (61%) and women (52%) among likely voters now oppose ObamaCare.  Every age demographic except 18-29 year olds oppose it by majorities ranging from 58% to 65%. Every income demographic except the under-$20K group opposes it by a majority, even the heretofore sympathetic $100K+ demo, which opposes it 58/41 — with 50% strongly opposed.

The Democrats are looking at an electoral meltdown next year if they push this bill through Congress.  The more people see it, and the more they see the way Reid, Pelosi, and Obama are attempting to stuff it down their throats, the more they dislike it.

These polls are about useless.

The Dems are going to do this. It only been a matter of time. The vote the other night shows this. It doesn’t matter what the people want – all that matters is the agenda/ideology.

We’ll see if the Dems take a bath next year, but by then it will be to late. Does anyone think this will get repealed if the Repubs take over? Please…

NO for 3 reasons:

1. The GOP would have to have 60 senators. No way that’s even remotely possible.

2. Even with 60, Obama would never sign it.

3. Even with 60, you have to figure a few RINOs would vote not to repeal.

No, this thing is a done deal and it’s never being undone.

You know I was talking to a friend of mine, an election hound (election scientist if there ever was) and pollster, recently. He was saying that with the way the Democrats are acting they are looking at being reduced to political insignificance for the next 40 years. Obamacare or not.

Basically no party has acted like the Democrats are acting now and Americans tend to be politically calm. A massive partisan shift will not sit well. I hope he is right, and that if he is the Republicans will not mess up.

If the Dems manage to pass a bill, Republicans may pick up enough votes next year to take over Congress and have enough votes to overturn an Obama veto.

They are really counting on the stupidity and amnesia of their voters.

Public opposition won’t stop this Congress-for-a-lifetime from passing what they think we all need.

It’s time to throw out everyone who hasn’t stood against this abomination from the start. It’s time for term limits on Congress. (I don’t like term limits, but it’s become the lesser of two evils.)

And it’s time to break the political machines that keep getting these guys elected.

US Troops Must be Second to None

Can’t wait to meet our troops – and all those who love the U.S. Armed Forces – tomorrow at Ft. Bragg. Read my book’s dedication page. The book is for these Patriots who fight for freedom. They deserve our support and our government’s unwavering commitment to equipping them for victory.

The book tour is beyond all expectations. This feels like the time when a team comes together, gearing up before a major competition to show unity and supply strength and encouragement to each team member equally, regardless of the team member’s role or title.

On this tour I hear the grave concerns Americans have for our children’s future. I also feel the hope so many of you want to cling to – hope for those on Capitol Hill to see the light, hope for politicians to be humble enough to acknowledge that growing the federal government isn’t the answer to our economic challenges, hope that it won’t take another terrorist strike to wake us up to continued threats by those who hate America and our allies.

At every stop on this tour I see Americans coming together to say, “Enough. We love our country too much to just sit down and shut up while politicians take us for a ride. We shall be heard.”

We see a united team.

Now, I want to give you more hope: We are Americans. Anything is possible in America. Anyone can make a positive difference. You don’t need a title or a political position or a pedigree. We can take our country back from those who think growing national debt will grow prosperity for us, the little guys. We can take it back from those who think shrinking military power will make the homeland safer for us, the little guys.

We can take it back because we’re fired up, and we’re all about telling our government to listen to us, trust us, get back on our side… or politicians: you’re fired.

Plunging our country deeper and deeper in debt; borrowing billions from foreign countries; relying on foreign nations to supply us with energy; talking about sanctions against dangerous regimes but not following through; hesitating to surge aggressively to stop terrorist strongholds from growing; allowing government to take over health care, banks, the auto industry, and who knows what else they’ve got up their sleeves… it’s all too much and we’ve had enough.

Ronald Reagan knew it took a united team to right the wrongs of Washington. He told his team in essence, “Gentlemen and Ladies, I hate inflation; I hate taxes; I hate terrorists. Do something about it.”

America, you’re doing something about it! Thank you for standing up and speaking out. Thank you for holding on to hope, for loving America so passionately and supporting our troops who fight for freedom. Keep the faith!

Our job, and the only job, is to find the right candidates to run in 2012.
By end of 2010 the dems will implode…no matter the bravado, their jobs and power is more important then any bill, and they will see the polls.
By then it should be too late for them to repair the damage…if we have the right group of leaders prepared to win the election.
That means many of us putting aside some of our differences, and selecting winners.
A populist will win, not an elitist, not a born and raised politician, but someone that seemingly comes from the “people”.

The Democrats are looking at an electoral meltdown next year if they push this bill through Congress.

They’re looking at an electoral meltdown in any case. What are they going to run on? Porkulus? Double digit unemployment? So if they’re going to get swamped, they might as well pass their dream of national health care while they still can.

Moreover, once it’s passed then they campaign on how the Republicans want to take away YOUR health care. They will have enlarged the dependent class by adding another big entitlement. There’s a whole new group of voters for them. That’s how the Dems roll, babee.

In response you’ll see a bunch of feckless RINOs, fearfull of being thought of as mean and cruel, responding with: “oh no, we’re not interesting in taking away YOUR health care. We’re just going to make some minor tweaks to the system. That’s all. In fact, we’re going to make some minor tweaks AND enlarge it, because we’re just as nice as the Democrats. Really.”

I’m split as to whether the Democrats are scum or honorable for doing things in direct contravention of what their constituents want. On one hand, you have to admire sticking to principle over political expedience – i.e., the ones who will bend over backwards and do whatever it takes to win the next election. On the other hand, the will of the people is still important.

I lean to the former, obviously. I can see supporting an unpopular measure if you think it’s the right thing if it’s a fairly even split. I can’t fathom jamming something down people’s throats when it’s THIS unpopular.

Moonbatkiller, I think you miss the point. The Democratic Party ceased to exist after Jimmy Carter. It has gone so far to the left ideologically that is in fact a SOCIAL Democrat party if not outright socialist in its structure.

If this monstrosity of a bill passes, the Democrats will be in power more or less permanently. They will have established a permanent entitlement class that will keep them in power like the PRI in Mexico.

That’s the whole point of this exercise. Nancy Pelosi hates the Blue Dogs/moderates. She is ideologically leftist and, along with Precedent Obomber, is seeking the destruction of our institutions – political, economic and social – and a reordering of America into AmeriKa.

G-d help us.

J.J. Sefton on November 23, 2009 at 10:09 AM

What you have with the GOP right now is a bunch of socialist enabling career pols hoping to ride the anger with the Dems back to power in the next 2 elections. It is critical that, as Dems are swept from power, we not let the big spending power grubbers in the GOP to step into the vacuum. We have to replace them, too, with common sense conservatives.

Actually, the 38% figure is only slightly higher than the TOTAL of left-wing Democrats who are rapidly running this country into the ground.

My best guess is 30-35% of the libtards are calling the shots and they don’t give a damn what the entire rest of the country thinks or says. That’s why they’re ignoring our calls. They made up their minds a long time ago and will vote “yea” on anything and everything their leadership puts forth.

Only those who seriously fear losing their jobs – the realists among the total – will hesitate. They then become Harry’s targets for “vote buying” with pork amendments.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 56% now oppose the plan

I have absolutely no doubt that the recent plunge in support for Obamacare is in direct response to the recent government recommendations regarding mammograms and pap smears.

Women are scared, and rightly so, with the high rates of breast cancer deaths. These recommendations foreshadow what we “tea partiers” have been talking about for almost a year now, and that is rationing of health care.

Personally I’m sick and tired of “who’s the best of the worst” and “lesser of two evils”…..I’m ready to caste a worthless vote if it means for someone to understand that I’m sick and tired of “same old song and dance”!

Vntnrse on November 23, 2009 at 10:14 AM

no you are wrong. they still need 60 votes to “close debate” then vote on it. The vote sat was to “open debate” Now comes the amendments, the attempts by the GOp to add pro-life portions, to get the dems to agrre fro the congress to live under it. Look for the Senate to agree to all this since the house bill has been passed they can strip alot out in conference. and then the final vote by both o\houses. I hope coburn follows thru on his threat to have bill read on floor.

What about a Supreme Court challenge? Couldn’t some brave comservative politician ask SCOTUS to question the Constitutionality of Obamacare if it becomes law?

Or am I dreaming?

UltimateBob on November 23, 2009 at 10:22 AM

It well should be his last term – What is it about NO MORE SPENDING an 91% of his constituents melting his phone lines and mail asking him to vote NO that he doesn’t understand?????

You’re dreaming. The only way to stop our decline is to purge the US of progressives. It’s them and them only that are pushing us towards the brink.

The Democrat stooges have been sold a bill of goods that says that the Democrats now have life long power. Either they are incredibly stupid and totally blinded by power or there is something big in the works that we don’t know. Not that it matters, we can defeat them. Blanche sold out for money, we know that and what’s his name for a promised position when he is voted out.
Eventually moonrry and political capital is going to run out unless Obama succeeds in joining his pals Chavez and the rest as leader of a socialist nation.

ROTFLOL!!! That bunch of unelected lawmakers?

We’ve had a hard enough time fighting ObamaCare when there were hundreds of different people for the moonbat media and various leeches to bribe and threaten and cajole.

Even IF, by some miracle, a challenge did make it all the way to SCOTUS in some semblance of a timely manner, the pressure exerted on them to kick us to the curb in spectacular fashion would be nigh-unbelievable.

If this passes, and after the GOP gets the votes, I wonder if they could shut down the government and keep it shut down until it is repealed in it’s entirety?

RustBelt on November 23, 2009 at 10:10 AM

If the GOP felt like it, they could just have one Senator in each vote waive unanimous consent and force bills to be read aloud each time there’s a meeting on them.

Considering the average length of a piece of legislation these days, that would bring Congress to a stand-still, which would do much less damage than actually passing ANY bill.

teke184 on November 23, 2009 at 10:31 AM

Hannity was saying the other day that this bill would tax us for health care for three years before any benefits started. Assuming this is true, how are the people who can’t afford health care now going to afford paying for it twice for three years–still without coverage? And if they don’t pay the taxes for 3 years without coverage, will they go to jail? Imagine how surprised some of these people who have been whining about paying $150 to go to the doctor will be when the cops show up on their doorstep for not paying the $750 penalty for not paying the taxes. Further, I can’t see how this tax on top of premiums for three years is going to help those who barely have coverage now.

Why don’t the Republicans point this out? (Rhetorical question.)

Trust me we don`t want it and the recall petition should be on internet today for Mary Turncoat Landrieu. She has brought shame to our state.

LSUMama on November 23, 2009 at 10:41 AM

Every age demographic except 18-29 year olds oppose it by majorities ranging from 58% to 65%

My son is under 18 and he said he doesn’t want this. He wants a chance to make it on his own. He sees what’s going on and he’s scared for his future. He says why can’t people work hard and earn it. I tell him, many people want everything for noting and he says it’s not fair. I feel bad for my kids getting stuck with this.

UnderstandingisPower on November 23, 2009 at 10:38 AM

I’ve been hearing that it’s five years. This is the shell game that the Dems are using to say that the bill will be “deficit neutral.” Of course, for the first ten years, you’re only offering coverage for 5 years while collecting revenues for 10 years. The sh!t is going to really hit the fan during the second ten years, when you won’t have that “cushion” of 5 years’ revenue to pay for it.

But not to worry, Obama will be safely out of office by then so he won’t have to suffer any consequences.

UltimateBob on November 23, 2009 at 10:46 AM

We’ll see what happens to these so called moderate Democrats soon. Lincoln is a goner in 2010 and Nelson better have another job lined up in 2012. I agree that Nelson and Landrieu should be recalled. When the tax starts kicking in on people’s paychecks in January, I am sure recalls for these turncoats will be discussed!

Landrieu should be forced to share the $300 Billion with Houston, Tx; where Katrina evacuees fled to in droves.

Oh, and since I live in Tennessee, I want my tax dollars exempted from this bail-out to Landrieu!

TN Mom on November 23, 2009 at 10:48 AM

Red Cloud, with all due respect the will of the people is the ONLY thing that is important. We live in a representative republic. Our elected officials are not placed in office to stand on personal principles of “what they think is best”, they are elected to represnt the will of the people, period. Unfortunately, in too many cases, the “will of the people” is to take from those who earn and give tho those who don’t. This is what happens when a victim mentality takes over the voting public and that same voting public figures out it can vote itself largess. I am not overlooking the value of standing by one’s principles, simply stating that the will of the people is the reason we elect these people in the first place, and we have to believe that their principles are the same as our own to cast that vote. It is the corruption of principles, from personal responsibility and pride in work to victimhood and laziness, that has gotten us into our present mess.
