Quotes of the day

posted at 10:37 pm on November 23, 2009 by Allahpundit

“Asked why she is a better candidate than her Republican primary opponent Assemblyman Chuck DeVore (R-Calif.), Fiorina said that a woman stands a better chance of defeating Boxer.

“‘With all due respect and deep affection for white men, I am married to one,’ Fiorina said at a breakfast at Americans for Tax Reform. ‘But [Barbara Boxer] knows how to beat them in California, she has done it over and over and over again.’”

***
“But it’s certainly not dirty pool for Fiorina to note the conventional wisdom, that for some women voters, or for some moderates, a female candidate is more appealing. Maybe it shouldn’t be that way, but it does, indeed, seem to be that way. (If you buy the conventional wisdom — which you don’t have to. But I don’t see the sin in noting that conventional wisdom.)

“And let me note: When Sarah Palin was attracting large swaths of previously-Obama-leaning women, no one objected and jumped up and down shouting ‘It’s not right that women are now inclined to vote Republican just because Sarah Palin is a woman! I renounce these votes!’

“If I remember right: We were all more than eager to accept those votes, even if they were cast for supposedly-bad reasons. In fact, I remember being positively giddy about that myself.”

***
“Now look just at Republicans: Republican men deem Palin ‘qualified’ by a margin of 60-38. But Republican women? Not even half think she is qualified: only 49%. 50% of Republican women say Palin is unqualified for the job.

“If you like Palin – well go ahead. It’s a free country. But quit saying that ‘the people’ love Sarah Palin.

“They don’t. Actually, they quite dislike her. The longer they know her, the more they dislike her. And even more than they dislike her, they do not respect her. That reaction of dislike and disrespect is most concentrated among American women.

“Sarah’s constituency is a relatively small cohort of conservative men. I offended a lot of these people last week by suggesting that there was some sexual dynamic at work in the enthusiasm for the politician whom Rush Limbaugh used to describe as ‘Governor Babe.’ So let’s put it this way: Whatever impulse it is that so excites Palin supporters, it is not shared by their wives.”

And you think Palin has a problem?

And you sound like you’re 14 years old. You know exactly what has been requested. However, you have no intentions of backing up any of your claims. You’re too busy trying to affirm your own perceived intelligence by your condescending remarks to other posters. Cite your sources backing up your claims of Sarah Palin’s unpopularity or go away.

True, just ask Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez!

She lost EVERY race until she changed her name from Loretta Brixey to Loretta Sanchez

Vox, dude, you’ve decidedly NEVER been involved in a lawsuit.
It is an enormous undertaking, as Plaintiff or Defendant. I doubt that even if your cause of action were just you’d spend less than 20 large, especially as a public figure.

Even substantial arguments have to meet the procedural test; namely, is there case law/precedent for this action to continue?

Shyte man, how deep are Your pockets? How would such relentless assaults effect your family? Can you honestly say you’d deal with it flawlessly, nonstop? Forget the expense. Could you deal with the nuisance?

Once again David Frum is a Tool.

And I have to say I laughed my ass off when Palin essentially said “Who the hell is this dude Brooks anyway and why should I care what he has to say?”. Which pretty much sums up my opinion of David Brooks quite succinctly. David Brooks is not a Conservative although he plays one on TV.

Thank God I don’t live in California. I’d hate to have even consider voting for this Fiorina b!tc# that makes McCain look like a hardcore conservative and Neil Bush seem an astute businessman.

The difference is that the POTUS has protections, not to mention the backing of the Fed. Govt, in place to keep those frivilous lawsuits from affecting & effecting their day to day lives. In Alaska, the Governor is not afforded State protection and a Governor is forced to defend themselves with private attorneys. Private attorneys tend to charge fees for their services…

Doc, I think her favorables will increase IF she allows people to meet, or hear her speak in person. 0bama is toast as his efforts to socialize America will continue to keep the economy down, keep jobs from opening, and I’m expecting to see energy prices rise dramatically.

People are beginning to learn how the Republican Party stuck it to conservatives like me, then went on to stick the knife in the back of Sarah. The GOP will AGAIN find itself in deep doo doo as more revelations come to light, McLame amongst them.

You need to quit swallowing the lines you are fed. It was pleaded that she was acting in her personal capacity, yes, and that is necessarily so. If you are acting in a purely private capacity, then there can be no ethics question.

That does not mean you are not sued (and liable) in your personal capacity.

Wow talk about quitters! Yeah, I’d be upset too!

As for this, ON TOPIC bit:

They don’t. Actually, they quite dislike her. The longer they know her, the more they dislike her. And even more than they dislike her, they do not respect her.

Statements like this must be coming from libturd idiots. Look at the pictures of the lines to have this woman autograph her book and listen to the people in the audience.

Mrs. Palin will make a better President than any of the other conservative candidates. She actually represents the people.

As for the this remark *voxpopuli on November 24, 2009 at 12:25 AM* our country was meant to be run by the citizens, not professional politicians. At every level of our society we have foolishly believed that the elites had all the answers so we stopped paying attention. What do we have to show for it? Collapsing economy, mountains of debt, mediocre schools, corruption and military in harms way because said elites can make up their minds. More, please. I was surprised the other day when a close friend of mine told me that he was less likely to support Palin because she was a woman…he said he was not a sexist, but a lot of really bad scary people out there were sexist and he thought they would fail to be sufficiently intimidated by a woman in the Oval Office. However, he can not stand Obama..so I am sure he would vote for Palin if she got the nomination.

It is time for a woman presidential candidate.

The democrats know it. I believe the Republican elites know it too, the idiots just haven’t accepted Palin yet. But they will, by hook or crook.

In fact in some ways it is one of Palin’s biggest attractions, and of course, one of the reasons why she will definitely be running. If you were a woman with a shot at the WH, wouldn’t you run? The first woman president, very historic.

I think Palinistas underestimate how much people dislike her accent. Yes its stupid and irrational and vaguely bigoted, but thats how it is.

Speedwagon82 on November 24, 2009 at 2:02 AM

Thanks for sharing with us the petty reason for distain. Principle, policy, and what ever else doesn’t matter to conservatives or republicans. It’s that damn accent that weighs the heaviest with dissenters.

Americannodash on November 24, 2009 at 2:15 AM

Some people are petty and get fixated on silly things, and they have a right to vote.

I like Palin best when she is doing two things: Talking about policy and principles, or talking about Trig and, to a lesser extent, her other children.

When Palin talks at length about principles and policies, she gets serious and she talks differently, uses a different tone of voice, uses different language style, as most of us do. I get a better sense that I can relate to her as person with whom I share many ideals, beliefs, principles. I wish she would do this much, much more. Yet, I guess most people find this sort of thing boring and prefer it when interviews focus on the gossipy and celebrity stuff, the cultural matters, and the competition between politicians.

When Sarah talks about Trig, she also talks differently. Here, she talks from her heart, and her love flows through her eyes, her face, her voice, her choice of words, her manner of speaking. At these times, I feel I can most connect with her as a human being, and feel a close bond with her.

But when Sarah Palin talks about “the huntin’ and the fishin’ and the hockey moms,” she tends to emphasize her local accent and the dropped g’s. I like different accents, but some people find them irritating. And regarding her lifestyle interests, I don’t connect with her at all. I have no idea how many people in our country share this lifestyle, but it is not, nor has it ever been my lifestyle. Of course, as a hermit, I connect with the very little of contemporary cultural lifestyles, so…

There are vast cultural differences within our country, and many different regional and local accents. Often these divide us in petty, silly and bigoted ways.

The most difficult and personal aspects of one’s life, especially when discussing a loved one who is disabled, and especially when that loved one is a child, are topics that get right to the heart of what it means to be a human being. Love is one of the most precious things we can ever give or receive, and it is a great uniter.

Fundamental principles and values tend to unite us, or at least unite most of us. And it just so happens that they are very important in politics and governance.

So yes, Palin’s accent and manner of speaking are issues. They are symbolic of the differences that separate us from one another, rather than the principles and policies that can unite us, and the love that serves as a healing balm when we face difficulties in life.

I THINK MANY PALINISTAS UNDERESTIMATE HOW MUCH PEOPLE DON’T LIKE HER ACCENT

COMMENT:

I am a Palinista but as an observer of the political scene since Kennedy-Nixon (Nixon’s five o’clock shadow in his debate with Kennedy supposedly cost him the election) I do not discount or dismiss any perception. I agree that Sarah’s accent is not embraced by many elitists who lives on the coasts but I am not convinced that Sarah’s accent is persona non grata in the ‘heartland” or ‘flyover country’.

Let’s be brutally and politically honest. If Sarah secures the 2012 GOP nomination the chances of her winning the Northeast and California are very slim, and I would even make the same comment if Sarah spoke like Hillary.

If Sarah win the necessary 270+ electoral votes in 2012 it will be comprised of dominating the deep south, winning back Florida, dominating in coal country and winning back Ohio and Indiana, dominating in the mid-west and Rocky Mountain states and winning back Colorado, Nevada, and New Mexico.

This boggles my mind as well, but yes, it is a problem. Not disabling, but something to work on.

I heard Glenn Beck on his radio show last week do a five minute riff on Gov. Palin’s accent and how it drove him crazy and reinforced people’s perception of her as unintelligent. On a personal note, if also drives my husband crazy but it obviously wouldn’t be a deal breaker. I am fascinated by accents off all kinds that the fact that they are disappearing so obviously I disagree.

We’ll just have to see what women voters decide. My money’s not on Frum, though, given the events of the last couple of weeks, and his track record.

Loxodonta on November 24, 2009 at 7:29 AM

Having been born in Washington State that is one of the things about her I can relate to, my step-father taught me to shot a rifle (30.06) when I was 8 and I had an Uncle who took me Bear hunting when I was nine years old, I had my own .410 shot gun I used to hunt birds with in our back yard (which was 275 acres) after school.

Having lived in San Diego California since I was 10 (Step-father was in the US Navy) I can understand how people in the more urban area’s might not connect with this lifestyle, but even here in San Diego I hunted rabbit’s with a .22 rifle until I was in my late teens.

I do remember that my hunting past time freaked out some of my high school classmates, they were subdivision kids, never fired any kind of firearm in their lives and were terrified of guns, I remember thinking that they had some kind of weird phobia that made them think that any gun in a room with them was just going to jump out of a locked cabinet all by itself and shoot them for absolutely no reason, I couldn’t understand that kind of reasoning then and still cant, but I do know that it exists.

People who have been around guns all of their lives generally don’t tend to think that way, spend enough time hunting and you eventually end up thinking of a gun in the same fashion as you do a hammer, a saw or a screwdriver, it’s a tool with a specific usage, like any tool it can be dangerous if not used properly, but it’s just a tool, an inanimate object incapable of doing anything on it’s own.

doriangrey on November 24, 2009 at 8:02 AM

Liberals aren’t Americans. So yes, most Americans like Palin.

KH15 on November 24, 2009 at 8:03 AM

It’s conservative men who built this country and it’s conservative men who protect it. If conservative men are the cohort that view Sarah Palin favorably then all of the rest of you who don’t agree with us just STFD and STFU. Until you can build and defend a country then your opinion doesn’t matter.

How’s that for a poll.

Post of the day.

tinkerthinker on November 24, 2009 at 8:18 AM

And regarding her lifestyle interests, I don’t connect with her at all. I have no idea how many people in our country share this lifestyle, but it is not, nor has it ever been my lifestyle.

Loxodonta on November 24, 2009 at 7:29 AM

Well written, Lox. You apply the sugar. Here’s the vinegar.

Those who pick on Palin’s accent expose their own preference for malicious prejudice.

The accent in question exposes the measure of intolerance within city slickers against rural America, no matter how intellectually acute and productive the rural American, no matter how DEPENDENT the urban lifestyle is upon the rural lifestyle for survival (food and energy).

This discrimination against the Northern American rural accent marks a bigot.

maverick muse on November 24, 2009 at 8:22 AM

That Bill O’Reilly interview was DYNAMITE. This is the Sarah Palin who can connect with Independents. It was as good a showing as Dayton, OH, the RNC convention speech, the debate or her SNL appearance. The administration must be terrified.

alliebobbitt on November 24, 2009 at 8:24 AM

Frum is basing his data on some very questionable polls conducted by a very questionable MSM to rabidly make his weak point. He mentions in his article that people often combat his women-hate-sarah meme with “well, I see many moms at her rallies” etc and it doesn’t pass muster. He’s quite wrong…no poll can be as scientific as seeing with your own eyes the incredible influence Sarah’s weilding over the women in the base…Hillary struggled as well with women in her base, too…women are slow to come around and they’ve come around for Sarah.

Yeah, David, I’m talking about the women freezing out in the cold for all hours of the night just to see our Sarah.

This is the new avenue of attack for the ‘Cuda. Only conservative men like her because she’s attractive. How shallow and stupid can someone’s intellect be? I’m talking about you, Frum. Get over yourself all ready and step aside for the star.

RepubChica on November 24, 2009 at 8:27 AM

tinkerthinker on November 24, 2009 at 8:18 AM

ITA. I have friends who don’t count themselves as supporters, but they like her just fine. Frum certainly has painted a pretty unflattering portrait of conservative women: We’re all petty, catty b!tches who are jealous of Palin because our husbands like her? Sounds like liberal and RINO women to me. Conservative women like her because she is us. I know it’s anecdotal, but just take a look at the crowds at these book signings. There are at least as many women as men camping out all night, possibly more. And perhaps most enecouraging, a lot of them are young.

I think Frum’s desperation is showing. He’s figured out if he makes some deranged observation about Palin and her supporters a couple of times a week, he’ll finally get some page views.

And regarding her lifestyle interests, I don’t connect with her at all. I have no idea how many people in our country share this lifestyle, but it is not, nor has it ever been my lifestyle.

I’ve never picked up a gun in my life, much less hunted moose or any other animal. I don’t even think I’m capable. I’ve never fished either, and the only boat I’ve ever been on is the Staten Island ferry. I work out only when the mood strikes, and I’m not much for eating “good, clean, organic protein” — actually, I don’t eat meat much period. I believe in God, but I don’t subscribe to organized religion and haven’t been to Mass in years. I’m on the fence regarding abortion. I am not married and have no kids, and that’s by choice: I enjoy being a single career girl.

Nevertheless, I love Sarah Palin. Weird, huh? How would you explain someone like me? And don’t think I’m the only one either.

NoLeftTurn on November 24, 2009 at 8:34 AM

Palin Lifestyle: Christian, married with children, REALLY working, not pencil pushing, responsibly managing resources balancing the tightrope between ecological conservation and conservative production, keeping an eagle eye preventing and inhibiting corruption.

By the sweat of your brow
you will eat your food
until you return to the ground,
since from it you were taken;
for dust you are
and to dust you will return.”

If Americans have “evolved” into the urban jungle to the extent that Americans no longer appreciate the contributions from those who yet live the harsh but clean lifestyle in the “wilderness” producing the necessities for survival NOT produced in the urban market setting, then those Americans resemble every other civilization brought down by its own corruption.

It’s THANKSGIVING, folks.

Even if you don’t thank God for all good things, at least thank those who make the sacrifices necessary in lifestyle to provide you with what goods you enjoy. Otherwise, reflect the lost cause of bitter ingratitude and self-righteous bigotry.

Andrew Jackson and Abrahan Lincoln would never have been POTUS had refined accent been the litmus test as it WOULD BE if we tolerate such bigotry now. Our Founding Fathers are rolling in their graves that Americans would preen over which accent is permitted to lead their Constitutional Republic today.

Not weird. And certainly not the only one, either. I was born in Puerto Rico and raised in the Bronx, NY. Growing up as a kid, the only fun to be found was waiting for someone with pliers to open up the fire hydrant or playing wiffle ball on the asphalt of the complex parking lot.
As a conservative Latina, I see so much promise in Sarah Palin for the girls in this country….and that’s all girls, doesn’t matter if you’re from the country or the barrios.

I think her poll numbers with women will come up. I’m sort of a rebel type, so it didn’t bother me to defend her, even though she had some obvious gaps in her national resume and needed experience with the press. That made sense to me. McCain waited too late to choose a VP. It’s impossible to get someone up to a comfort level that fast.

He turned her into a talking Barbie, and that turned women off, I suspect. We bristle at traditional roles and being used as “arm candy.”

But I agreed with Bill Clinton. He said she has a boatload of political talent. He’s right. She’s a natural retail politician.

As women recognize that she’s emerged from the Barbie doll phase, they’ll back her if they like her policies.

The one place where she can’t go back is that she’s ideological more than experienced at this point.

A LOT OF WOMEN ARE JEALOUS OF HER!!!!!!!

She’s “hot”, athletic, she had a Downs Syndrome baby, she’s got a great looking husband and kids and family. She’s successful, etc. Let’s not forget some of these “female” numbers are skewed by those gals that have had abortions.

We have a friend and he and his wife “despise” Palin. We couldn’t figure out why they are Conservative, mostly vote Republican but they literally hate her………come to find out…….the wife has had an abortion….and actually more than one.

PappyD61 on November 24, 2009 at 8:56 AM

This is “the wife”. I completely support Sarah Palin in all she endeavors to do. She is a very strong woman, wife, mother and hopefully candidate. She is the only politician that I have been able to trust. I believe she says what she means and means what she says. There is a lot of common sense coming out of her mouth, that’s a dose of what we all need right now.

As far as the sexuality goes…hell yeah she’s hot, but that is only one of her assets. I think all the women journalist are just jealous of her…it’s all very catty. As the world and especially our country is going down the tubes, there are a lot more important things to worry about than if the next President of the United States is hot or not.

God bless Sarah Palin and this United States.

Dawn (davidk’s better half)

Unlike Obama, Sarah’s not an ideologue.

Basilsbest on November 24, 2009 at 8:59 AM

Yesterday, Fred Thompson noted to Jerry on their show that Palin keeps proving how important INSTINCT is in a leader, that Palin’s instincts prove consistently that she makes a far superior executive than Obama is being, that her experience as Alaska’s Governor proved as well.

Conservatives can trust Palin’s instinctive discernment between what enables and what disables our strong Constitutional Republic.

Meanwhile, Palin’s gaining the national political experience that teaches TRUST BUT VERIFY alliances.

I always suspected that chauvinism is apparent in women as it is in men (not saying you). And I’m not saying Sarah’s 100% flawless and polished–no one is–but the ‘Barbie’ perception annoys me. Sure, she’s above-average in looks for women her age by far, but her looks never got in the way of her informing me of the common sense and grasp of sustainable economic principles she possesses, like on energy and cutting pork, etc. It’s almost like some women automatically turn off their ears when they see an attractive women talk about serious issues.

My own comment was less about her looks and more about not allowing her to just talk to the press naturally.

They were naturally curious and rightfully so. By turning her into a speechmaker only, they set her up for a huge problem in the interviews.

That’s what I meant by talking Barbie.

This discrimination against the Northern American rural accent marks a bigot.

maverick muse on November 24, 2009 at 8:22 AM

Of course it’s bigoted. But that bigotry cuts both ways.

The first time I ever visited the South, after introducing myself and stating where I was from, the very first words I heard in a southern accent were, “So, you’re a damn Yankee!”

Not all in the Northeast, the West Coast and big cities are elitists or liberals. And not all who speak in rural accents are innocent, and have never hurled insults against whole groups of other Americans, simply because of what they look like, where they live, how they speak, or what their lifestyle choices are.

That’s why I prefer emphasizing the things that unite us, rather than those that often divide us, especially in such petty ways.

PappyD61 on November 24, 2009 at 8:56 AM

Don’t be too hard on women who have had abortions. Some of them are living with tremendous guilt. They are unable to forgive themselves. I’ve talked to women, tears streaming down their faces, describing that guilt.

They think that everthing bad that happens to them is punishment for what they have done. And if they happen to have a miscarraige, that guilt multiplies.

I tell them of God’s love and His infinite mercy. They can get in their heads, but it doesn’t get into their emotions.

Yes, I know that some women have boasted about how many abortions they have had, but in my experience they are the exceptions.

As far as Palin is concerned, I know two women who have had abortions strongly supporter of her.
