Quotes of the day

posted at 10:37 pm on November 23, 2009 by Allahpundit

“Asked why she is a better candidate than her Republican primary opponent Assemblyman Chuck DeVore (R-Calif.), Fiorina said that a woman stands a better chance of defeating Boxer.

“‘With all due respect and deep affection for white men, I am married to one,’ Fiorina said at a breakfast at Americans for Tax Reform. ‘But [Barbara Boxer] knows how to beat them in California, she has done it over and over and over again.’”

***
“But it’s certainly not dirty pool for Fiorina to note the conventional wisdom, that for some women voters, or for some moderates, a female candidate is more appealing. Maybe it shouldn’t be that way, but it does, indeed, seem to be that way. (If you buy the conventional wisdom — which you don’t have to. But I don’t see the sin in noting that conventional wisdom.)

“And let me note: When Sarah Palin was attracting large swaths of previously-Obama-leaning women, no one objected and jumped up and down shouting ‘It’s not right that women are now inclined to vote Republican just because Sarah Palin is a woman! I renounce these votes!’

“If I remember right: We were all more than eager to accept those votes, even if they were cast for supposedly-bad reasons. In fact, I remember being positively giddy about that myself.”

***
“Now look just at Republicans: Republican men deem Palin ‘qualified’ by a margin of 60-38. But Republican women? Not even half think she is qualified: only 49%. 50% of Republican women say Palin is unqualified for the job.

“If you like Palin – well go ahead. It’s a free country. But quit saying that ‘the people’ love Sarah Palin.

“They don’t. Actually, they quite dislike her. The longer they know her, the more they dislike her. And even more than they dislike her, they do not respect her. That reaction of dislike and disrespect is most concentrated among American women.

“Sarah’s constituency is a relatively small cohort of conservative men. I offended a lot of these people last week by suggesting that there was some sexual dynamic at work in the enthusiasm for the politician whom Rush Limbaugh used to describe as ‘Governor Babe.’ So let’s put it this way: Whatever impulse it is that so excites Palin supporters, it is not shared by their wives.”

Ummm . . . not sure of your point here. No question, the Hockey Babe has “flourish,” meaning style. She has plenty of style. My problem is, from what I can discern, the substance is not world-class.

When are conservatives going to stop letting this weasel pretend to represent us? He was the first disloyal creep to throw Bush under the bus before his term was even over, everyone in his family is a raving lunatic liberal and he attacks the most popular conservative around. Is the guy even American? He’s from canada, has he given up that citizenship and become an American? And don’t fall for his bs about Palin, if Ronald Reagan returned frum would attack him also. And he would do that because he is a bullfruit liberal posing as a conservative so he can help destroy the conservative movement from within.

You need to get laid ( for the first time; your hand doesn’t count )– get educated ( not the same as absorbing talking points — get mature ( for you, probably not possible ) –and most of all, get a hobby ( other than being a target for well-deserved abuse ).

People like you have had a year to inflate yourselves, with one year left on your clock. After that, it’s back to stale classrooms stinking of feet and your parents’ basement suite.

Reagan was portrayed as a dunce and a lightweight by the media just as Palin is. I don’t know if she is, or can be, on the same level as Reagan was. I think time will tell. The more she is in the spotlight and not just in the news, the more we will find out about her. No they don’t. I did a PEW Politics IQ poll months back and women scored dismally. It was 12 questions simply asking about who was who (like Sec of State, Chairman of Fed Reserve, Secy of Treasury, etc…), some geography, and the unemployment rate. 52% men scored 100. Only 32% women scored 100.

Here’s the interview with T Smiley and B Feiler on his book, “Walking the Bible, Abraham, Where God Was Born and, his latest, America’s Prophet.”

Having not read the tome I’d be ignorant in commenting on it.
What is noteworthy in this exchange is the following-
Feiler: …

It’s about the power of story, and the story is about hope. This year we are slaves, the Passover service says, but next year, we can be free. The ultimate lesson is it calls on us to act. The Moses story evangelizes action. It says to each of us, imagine your own promised land.

Plunge through those waters, persevere through that dryness, and then don’t be surprised if you come up short because the ultimate lesson of Moses is that the dream doesn’t die with the dreamer, and the ultimate destination is not this year, it’s next year.

So to me, be your own Moses. These people, Tavis, that we’re talking about here – the pilgrims, Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, Harriet Tubman, Abraham Lincoln, Barack Obama – these people were not born to greatness. They were ordinary people who found in this story a way to make themselves great.

So there’s no Moses? Be the Moses. Each of us has the ability to make, to imagine that promised land, and then to lead people to get there.

To which Tavis S responds:

Tavis: I hear you and I agree with you, but here’s the question. You have to have reason to believe – people have to have reason to believe – I hear your argument about hope. I always make the distinction, Bruce, between hope and optimism. Optimism suggests there’s a particular set of facts or circumstances, conditions, something you can see, feel, or touch that gives you reason to believe that things are going to get better, so you say, “I’m optimistic…”

Read the rest of the exchange.

So much for situational ethics.

They can keep their plastic Moses.

I want my Ester:

Ester spoke yet again before the king, and fell down at his feet, and begged him with tears to put away the mischief of Haman the Agagite, and his device that he had devised against the Yehudim.

I think we can surmise who the king is, who the Agagite are and the devises they use to enslave us.

The real question is, whose side are you on?

No. I don’t mean any differential criticism of what either gender watches on TV and in the movies. Americans in general, and I’m sheepishly including myself, watch a lot of crap. I sat through the entire first Transformers movie. The whole time I kept thinking to myself, “How did Bay manage to set his own bar for vapidity even lower?” But I watched the whole damn thing. Just sayin’.

Sarah Palin vs. Barack Obama: The approval gap silently shrinks to a few points

FTA: Not that it matters politically because obviously she’s a female Republican dunce and he’s obviously a male Democratic genius.

But Sarah Palin’s poll numbers are strengthening.

And President Obama’s are sliding.

Guess what? They’re about to meet in the 40s.

I would hate for the American people to have a check list of perceived “historic” milestones to be accomplished in voting for leaders. I, personally, am not as enamored with our last choice and truly believe that his skin color had far more to do with his election then any other supposed attribute. As to the women that dislike Gov. Palin, I work with a young woman who wishes that the whole family would go away. This came up after the Oprah appearance. The gist of her conversation was that she views the Palin family and Levi Johnson as trailer trash unworthy of the public stage. What is even odder about all of this is the fact that this young woman’s past and current lifestyle would hardly we the basis of a reemergence of “Leave it to Beaver” but instead several promising appearances on Jerry Springer. Make what you will of it but it doesn’t bode well for a future candidacy when women like this feel superior to Gov. Palin.

I heard Glenn Beck on his radio show last week do a five minute riff on Gov. Palin’s accent and how it drove him crazy and reinforced people’s perception of her as unintelligent. On a personal note, if also drives my husband crazy but it obviously wouldn’t be a deal breaker. I am fascinated by accents off all kinds that the fact that they are disappearing so obviously I disagree.

I would suggest that a Frum quote be identified as such. I am really tired of his pontifications and would certainly not pursue it. Ditto Parker, Noonan and Brooks.

davo on November 24, 2009 at 2:36 AM

Frum (no matter how much you like him or dislike him) has a point.

Men like her, women don’t. Bottom line.

nickj116 on November 24, 2009 at 2:02 AM

Not really. It’s all relative, though Frum ignores this inconvenient truth. I looked at a PPP poll done in july (first I could find), and guess what? Palin does better relatively with women than any republican man polled.

Favs: Women/Men

Romney: 34/42
Huckabee: 38/48
Gingrich: 28/44
Palin: 45/50

As you can see, her relative gender balance is more even than any other (10% difference between 45-50). The others are more imbalanced, men like them more comparatively.

Remember, Frum’s line is she shouldn’t be the the Republican nominee because she has a problem with women!

Hey, Frum, who’s your pick, eh?

voxpopuli on November 24, 2009 at 2:49 AM

I may be giving men more credit then they deserve but I think they are less likely to give much credence to a candidate based on looks. Most men admire Mrs. Thatcher and Mrs. Kirkpatrick without being interested in their appearance. As to my gender, age has a lot to do with it but they can be petty and jealous. And they would let those things overrule any evidence that it is illogical.

Cindy Munford on November 24, 2009 at 2:25 AM

The issue isn’t that women aren’t politically savvy, as some have erroneously mentioned on this thread. Rather, as you’ve written so appropriately, it’s about Palin’s down-to-earth and folksy persona.

Historically, female pols had to demonstrate strength, perfect verbal delivery style, superior intellect, grit, a palpable grasp of all the issues, and an exceptional ability to take a punch. In short, most were fairly masculine (though not necessarily lesbian), and learned how to play hard-ball with the big boys. Remember McCain’s comment during the campaign about Hillary drinking like one of the guys? Hillary is a perfect contemporary example of this serious and stern prototype, as was Bella Abzug from thirty years ago. Many women still have this archetype in their heads– A strong female pol is someone like Hillary– tough and brilliant. The fact that Sarah is tangibly ordinary wigs a lot of women out. She’s like them, and therefore, can’t possibly be qualified to ascend the political ladder. Moreover, women have been socialized for centuries to compete with each other as a matter of survival. This archaic rivalry may be why we don’t support each other and fight for each other as we should.

I, admittedly, have reservations about Sarah as a national leader, but it has nothing to do with her down-to-earth style. I like that about her. She’s growing on me. In time, I may begin to like her even more.
