Video: Norah O’Donnell challenges teen Palin admirer to televised debate

posted at 11:15 am on November 21, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

I know I’ve seen this script before. Didn’t CNN boot Susan Roegen for doing essentially the same thing when she “reported” on a Chicago Tea Party by arguing with the attendees? What’s the difference? Other than Norah O’Donnell picking on teenagers rather than adults for her impromptu debate, not much at all:

Here’s the response from 17-year-old Jackie Seal, who found herself in the role of Joe the Plumber simply for standing in line to get her book signed (via Chris at HAP, who also clipped the video):

She asked the man beside me (who by the way is NOT my dad) the same question she had before we went on air. Myself on the other hand, not the same story. She had me read my shirt and then proceeded to ask me “Did you know Sarah Palin supported the bailout” to be 100% honest I was like, are you kidding me? She is trying to use my shirt against me. I was so shocked by the craftiness she had that I was truly stumped. I asked her where she got her fact and she read her little note. Then she asked me what I liked about Sarah, and I talked about the Constitution…

Immediately after the interview I said to my dad “Oh man, I have so many great responses now about my shirt” I could have said, well my shirt doesn’t say anything about Sarah Palin supporting the bailout or “Hey Norah, have you read the book? She talks about how during her debate prep she was handed a list of note cards that had questions and ‘non-answers’” Of course they told Sarah Palin to support everything McCain did. Call me crazy but it would have looked pretty bad had Sarah Palin been against something John McCain was against while they were running together.

Norah also claims I told her I voted (on her twitter). That is not true. She never asked my age or if I voted. I’m 17 I couldn’t have voted…and I don’t live in an ACORN district so I didn’t have a chance to even register illegally. Making that statement by Norah completely false.

It wasn’t the only false statement. Jackie forced O’Donnell to explain her statement that Palin backed the bailouts rather than take O’Donnell’s word for it.  The only thing O’Donnell could offer was a wan statement of generic support for John McCain from Palin, not an explicit “hey, let’s give away a trillion dollars to Wall Street” policy statement.   O’Donnell not only looked for someone she could bully, but then did so dishonestly, rather than report objectively or even argue honestly.

Of course, this is MS-NBC, which means O’Donnell will get back pats for bullying Palin fans.  As my friend John Ziegler can attest, it’s not as though MS-NBC encourages honest debate or objective reporting.  She crossed swords with John a few times over Media Malpractice, but John wasn’t an unprepared 17-year-old waiting for a book signing.  Find out how Norah O’Donnell fared when she tried boxing in her own weight classification by following the links, especially when she ducked him the last time.

Very good opportunity for everyone that goes to a Sarah book signing, beware the media and be prepared for the ambush.

I’d like to know if Ms. ODonnell experienced any backlash from this tactic.

Cindy Munford on November 21, 2009 at 11:29 AM

Hey, go easy on Norah O’Donnell. I’m sure she did the same with Obama supporters a year ago. What’s that? Oh, she didn’t? Well I’m certain she challenges every Obama administration member who comes on MSDNC. Hmm? Oh, she doesn’t?

Honestly I hope the drive-bys keep this up. It’s exposing them for who they really are. And it’s not like this strategery is doing them any good. Their ratings and circulation are in the toilet. And in the case of Roesgen, she lost her job.

Doughboy on November 21, 2009 at 11:29 AM

Personally I think the 17 year old did *great*, stood her ground, etc.

HF to her.

Midas on November 21, 2009 at 11:29 AM

Nora, here’s a rule of thumb. When you have to bend down to pummel your opponent, you’re the bully.

Both people she interviewed did a nice job of answering her dumb questions. Amazing how she dismisses the guy, before pouncing on the girl.

I see a journalism award in Nora’s future.

EMD on November 21, 2009 at 11:30 AM

Norah is a *itch, I think most adults are prepared when they go to these things to look for an ambush, a 17 year old kid not so much.
I think this girl held her own and Norah came off looking bad. She tried to trip up the guy behind her and it didn’t work.
For the parents that take their teenage children they should tell them not to talk to the press or be with them when they are interviewed.

Hening on November 21, 2009 at 11:33 AM

Norah ODonnell tried to bully a 17-year-old with a sucker punch of a false line that boomeranged right back on Norah.

LOL, the girl politely told Norah, “I don’t believe you.”

Neither ODonnell nor the girl stated that they had yet read the book. Norah had no right to ask for the girl to conclude what the book stated without clarifying whether she had yet read the book she was in the process of buying. ODonnell was propagandizing what others who refuse to read the book report as the book’s content.

Exactly. The girl held her own, smelling like a rose, point blank telling the antagonistic reporter, “I don’t believe that,” when told to respond to a lie.

maverick muse on November 21, 2009 at 11:37 AM

Looks like O’Donnell’s feathers are a bit ruffled after being schooled by an honest, principled 17-year-old.

Actually, I think the young lady would do well in a debate with O’Donnell. She’d get the truth out there, show that she can think for herself, and expose O’Donnell and MessNBC as frauds in a ratings bonanza. At the very least some viral videos. Would be awesome.

conservative pilgrim on November 21, 2009 at 11:39 AM

The difference between Susan Roegen and Norah O’Donnell is that CNN is still trying to fool people into thinking that it does not have a liberal bias. Whereas MSNBC doesn’t care what people think and actively encourages its reporters to be as biased as possible. In fact it wouldn’t have surprised me if after Roegen got shafted by CNN she showed up on MSNBC at a later date happily spewing forth very same left wing vitriol and stupidity that got her put on hiatus by CNN in the first place.

Hellrider on November 21, 2009 at 11:40 AM

CWforFreedom on November 21, 2009 at 11:45 AM

Maybe someone should tell Ms.ODonnell that these book purchasers and Ms.Palin are private citizens. Ms.Palin’s policy opinions have absolutely no bearing on the policy decisions being used today whatsoever. They are irrelevent. ODonnell used them as a battering ram to harass Ms.Palin’s supporters. Will we ever see the same done to someone interested in purchasing one of Obama’s books? By the way if you are interested in purchasing one of Barack Obama’s books Barnes and Nobel is offering Dreams from my Father for $2.29 lmao. Bargain price for birdcage liner.

Common guys. O’Donnell won this debate fair and square. In a debate, ‘passion’ always gets extra points. O’Donnell is more passionate and a real fighter compared to the non-fighting mood of Jackie (ala McCain.)

But O’Donnell is in danger. Obama, Huck and Romney are VICIOUSLY ANGRY against O’Donnell when they see this video clip. O’Donnell should realize that Jackie will be a full-pledged VOTER 3 years from now and she has just converted Jackie into a YOUNG PALINISTA.

The most likely scenario in 2012:

JACKIE AND HER FUTURE BOYFRIEND WILL VOTE FOR SARAH PALIN.

Conclusion: At least +2 solid votes for Palin in 2012 if she decides to run. Thanks, Norah O’Donnell for serving the CAUSE: REMOVAL OF STATIST FASCIST NARCISSISTIC OBAMA IN 2012.

I really hate them, too. I wonder if in those countries the Left holds up as models, e.g. France, the Left and Right actually hate each other or just disagree? I just don’t see how any political entity can exist where one half of the entity essentially sees the other as its worst enemy. Minus the nuclear threat, I definitely see the Left as being an enemy of the same nature as the former Soviets.

Easy to misspell, but since there’s an opposition book of Palin called ‘Going Rouge’, you’d think she be aware of the correct spelling or one of her fans would’ve informed her by now.

Incredibly beautiful eyes, but an idiot. And I hope that doesn’t come across as sexist. In normal times, O’Donnell would think she is totally down the middle in her reporting, but she wasn’t here. For anyone who needs a good laugh, I strongly recommend a little trip down Memory Lane by clicking on the link to the interview of John Ziegler by Contessa Brewer, who subbed for Nora O’Donnell, who didn’t want to get her clocked cleaned by Ziegler again. It’s tough to sit through three minutes of Brewer asking her snotty questions that were written by some MSNBC lackey, but her “Cut the mike, please?!?!” comment at the end makes it all worth while. I love how liberals operate; You’re getting your a$$ smoked off in a debate? No problem — just don’t let anybody hear what the other guy has to say! Problem solved! Ziegler had an absolute field day with this.
