The Optimist view: Lieberman is still standing strong, as far as I know. With his help, the Republicans can delay the final vote on this bill until 2010, and the elections will look A LOT closer from the other side of Christmas: there are bound to be some nervous Dems who will start to jump ship, and that trickle could very well become a deluge that leaves only the most “progressive” die-hards standing with Reid.
The Pessimist view: With the cloture vote out of the way, having required very little sacrifice on the part of the Democrats, they will be only one floor vote away from achieving something that has been their dream for decades. Who really thinks that, with victory SO close, the unscrupulous Dems won’t pull out all the stops and resort to any bribery or blackmail necessary to make it happen? Would they really risk snatching defeat from the jaws of victory?
It could go both ways, folks. I’m nervous as hell.
Treason is being committed right before our eyes. Our nation is on the totalitarian path to economic ruin and absolute loss of personal freedom.
Every vote for this horror is a violation of the Constitution and should be punished accordingly.
I would prefer to see 60 or so arrests of criminals in the Senate chamber instead of action in the streets, but the will of the people is being ignored.
People don’t want to know the truth, they deliberately close their eyes to it. It’s the same with Social Security and Medicare, people know that it is broke, know that it isn’t working yet, they just know that the government will bail them out when their time comes to collect and there is nothing there. As long as there are “rich” people to rape with taxes that is.
Jvette on November 21, 2009 at 2:37 PM
What happens when there aren’t any ‘Rich’ to rape for taxes?
What would it take to buy Lieberman’s vote? I’ll start a collection. We’ve got 5 hours before the vote. I’ll give him everything I can to kill this bill!
Allah I don’t think Reid will let it get to cloture. He’ll reconcile this thing. Then he only needs 50 votes. I think it’s a done deal. If it passes tonight the path has been laid. We all will be screwed.
This isn’t doomsday. The next cloture vote will be doomsday.
Allahpundit on November 21, 2009 at 2:45 PM
Maybe not, but it’s depressing: we’re all doing everything we can to stop this bill, and they’re STILL not listening to us. You can’t blame us for getting a little melodramatic when we witness no evidence that we do still live in a Constitutional, Representative Republic. Do you feel represented, Allah?
Only way to stop it is if Lieberman switches in the last hour. If not, it’s a done deal.
If Reid can’t get the 60 votes for final cloture, he’ll just switch it to reconciliation and shove it through. The only way to stop it was to prevent it from coming up to debate.
Enoxo on November 21, 2009 at 2:35 PM
And the only way to prevent it coming up for debate was to read the bill — and the GOP “leadership” couldn’t manage the small amount of courage and outrage it would take to do just that? They should gleefully and with all engines ahead be calling for the reading of the bill. I have heard that a reading can be called at several stages of this legislation, and if it were done in this way, any vote could be stalled into late spring/early summer of 2010 – with elections so near it would almost guarantee no passage.
The GOP must be on the take – as they allow our country to be taken from us.
Thanks for the info. Does anyone know if people protesting this takeover of our healthcare/economy are gathering in DC right now? Or wouldn’t the park service allow it since it isn’t planned?

A website or a phone campaign are good ways to get your petition going. Going door-to-door is also an option although it is more time consuming than the other two. This is important since you only have a set number of days to obtain the correct number of signatures—anywhere from 30 to 180 days.

englishqueen01 on November 21, 2009 at 3:19 PM
Yes. Apparently 18 states and DC have some sort of recall procedure. It takes petitions with a % of signatures of the last election vote to get a rep/Senator recalled, procedures depending on the State.
VA doesn’t allow it, otherwise I’d try to get Moderate-pigs-fly-out-of-my-a$$ Warner and Melonhead recalled NOW!
I don’t live in a recall state, but two of my sisters live in Navada. Maybe I can put some pressure on them to fight for a Reid recall. I know they hate him!
Every one of the 18 states needs a recall leader, who will oversee the circulation of petitions and lead a team of door-to-door canvassers to obtain the required signatures according to each state’s laws.
What will happen if this thing passes and is signed into law? Will those that are now adamantly against this just sit back and say, “Oh well. We gave it a good try”?
What will happen? It’s not like we can expect conservatives to burn down their communities in angry protest.
Can we throw all the bums out in 2010 and rescind the damn thing? Is someone going to sue the federal government for enacting an unconstitutional law?
Are we all going to just roll over like Frenchmen and let the governement take complete control of our lives?
I’m a little confused. The Kennedy seat is still open, right? So who is the GOPer who who crossed the aisle.

Oh no… see, the Democrat scumdogs of Massachusetts CHANGED THE LAW after Kennedy’s death specifically so they could fill his seat for this vote. After Kennedy had them change the law before so a Republican Governor couldn’t replace him if he died then… But now it’s a Democrat Governor in charge so the law was changed back…
The email refused to state whether he was in support of or opposed to the bill, only that he is considering the hundreds of thousands of constituent views he’s gotten.

I hope he’s saying what others have, such as even Charles Krauthammer. Something will get passed at some time in the next few months called “health care reform.” There is no way the Dems will let anyone stray enough to totally defeat this.
It may be a watered down version, but this is Obama’s signature issue, and any Dem that threatens to kill it will be bribed, threatened (you think Rahm doesn’t have a file on everyone?) or accused of being a racist for not wanting the first black president to succeed.
The longer it drags out, the more it might be watered down, as it gets closer to the 2010 election. The Blue Dogs and Red State Dem senators may need concessions to help them.
On the other hand, if RINO Grassley is just throwing up his hands in defeat, who knows what will pass.
Why was there no Tea Party at the Capitol today? We have got to get organized and scare these thieves into doing the right thing until we can rid Washington of their reeking carcasses.
Rod @ 3:41 raises a good, fundamental question. Maybe there is some chance that this can be stopped, but odds are we will have to grapple with his question.
I just called my senator AGAIN and let him know if he votes yes on the healthcare bill, he better start looking for a new job now. I will spend every last penny fighting against him. Hell, I’d do that anyway. His name: Bingaman.

Why don’t anit-trust laws apply to Insurance companies anyway? And why can’t we have real tort reform? Why doesn’t the commerce clause apply to health insurance?
Those things would make a real difference, Republicans have known that for a long long time… but they don’t do anything about it!
Republicans failure to act has led to this! I certainly hope they have learned their lesson!

VA doesn’t allow it, otherwise I’d try to get Moderate-pigs-fly-out-of-my-a$$ Warner and Melonhead recalled NOW!
Firefly_76 on November 21, 2009 at 3:23 PM
Then this, people, is our next recourse.
I, for one, will head a campaign to recall Sens. Feingold and Kohl, and every Wisconsin Congresscritter excluding Reps. Ryan and Sensenbrenner.
Who’s with me?
Viva la revolucion!

Why yes, yes there is…
BallisticBob on November 21, 2009 at 3:27 PM
I don’t live in a recall state, but two of my sisters live in Navada. Maybe I can put some pressure on them to fight for a Reid recall. I know they hate him!

Every one of the 18 states needs a recall leader, who will oversee the circulation of petitions and lead a team of door-to-door canvassers to obtain the required signatures according to each state’s laws.
It can be done. Easily.
RECALL THE TRAITORS NOW!

I’m a little confused. The Kennedy seat is still open, right? So who is the GOPer who who crossed the aisle.
If I’m wrong, please educate me.
Shotgun Messiah on November 21, 2009 at 3:39 PM
What will happen if this thing passes and is signed into law? Will those that are now adamantly against this just sit back and say, “Oh well. We gave it a good try”?
What will happen? It’s not like we can expect conservatives to burn down their communities in angry protest.
Can we throw all the bums out in 2010 and rescind the damn thing? Is someone going to sue the federal government for enacting an unconstitutional law?
Are we all going to just roll over like Frenchmen and let the governement take complete control of our lives?
What the hell is going to happen if this passes?
Rod on November 21, 2009 at 3:41 PM
They changed a law to fill that seat.
the_nile on November 21, 2009 at 3:41 PM
I think they already appointed his replacement.
Neat trick from the same people who stopped Mitt Romney from having the same power, but hey, par for the course.
Hawkins1701 on November 21, 2009 at 3:41 PM
Oh no… see, the Democrat scumdogs of Massachusetts CHANGED THE LAW after Kennedy’s death specifically so they could fill his seat for this vote. After Kennedy had them change the law before so a Republican Governor couldn’t replace him if he died then… But now it’s a Democrat Governor in charge so the law was changed back…
Skywise on November 21, 2009 at 3:42 PM
Let’s connect. We can do this. Throw the bums out.
englishqueen01 on November 21, 2009 at 3:43 PM
Just got an email response from my Senator.
The email refused to state whether he was in support of or opposed to the bill, only that he is considering the hundreds of thousands of constituent views he’s gotten.
Firefly_76 on November 21, 2009 at 3:45 PM
2010 is going to be fun to observe. The great purge begins.
FireBlogger on November 21, 2009 at 3:46 PM
Let us pray for the demise of the democratic/progressive party of the United States of America. ACORN cannot save you, Breitbart will see to that. SEIU is fried, thanks to Glenn Beck. See what you get when you push us too far, and ignore the will of the People, dems? You get gone. That’s what you get.
Bye, dems. Yummy Yummy Toasty Roasted Dems in 2010.
Key West Reader on November 21, 2009 at 3:46 PM
Hey it would be a great evening for Robert Byrd to get indigestion!
tim c on November 21, 2009 at 3:47 PM
I figured this would happen. Damn.
For anyone out there who wonders if there is a difference between the Democrat and Republican party, I would say this insanity kind of makes the point that there is.

Ted C
Add to Reagan;
Washington, Jefferson, Paine…….
and every American soldier that ever put on a uniform.
Is this what so many brave men sacrificed their lives for? The likes of Boxer, Reid, Kerry, Franken et al?
This is tyranny.
mountainmanbob on November 21, 2009 at 3:50 PM
You know Reid might be right… if this had anything to do with healthcare and not a government take over of our lives.
Why oh why couldn’t they just make some sensible legislation? Why does it have to be like this?
I guess the American people will think twice before ever trusting Democrats again.
I wish we had two honest decent political parties. The Democrats failures have always given Republicans excuses to become lazy and stupid themselves.
If we really had honest ideological debates… thoughtful, meaningful, we could have a better country.
Instead we have idiots trying to control everything and the other side getting picked by default.
I have to go with default. Most others will too.
petunia on November 21, 2009 at 3:50 PM
The dude farts dust for crissakes. Are skeletons allowed to vote?
America is getting a bad case of Obamalaise. Toasty, roasted dems in 2010. Yummy.
Key West Reader on November 21, 2009 at 3:50 PM
Wethal on November 21, 2009 at 3:51 PM
Why was there no Tea Party at the Capitol today? We have got to get organized and scare these thieves into doing the right thing until we can rid Washington of their reeking carcasses.
ROCnPhilly on November 21, 2009 at 3:51 PM
Rod @ 3:41 raises a good, fundamental question. Maybe there is some chance that this can be stopped, but odds are we will have to grapple with his question.
GaltBlvnAtty on November 21, 2009 at 3:52 PM
I just called my senator AGAIN and let him know if he votes yes on the healthcare bill, he better start looking for a new job now. I will spend every last penny fighting against him. Hell, I’d do that anyway. His name: Bingaman.
HornetSting on November 21, 2009 at 3:53 PM
Because they are flinging their monkey ch*t at us faster than we can deflect it. We had tens of thousands of people on the WH lawn, in the streets, at town halls. We are being ignored.
At their own peril. The Great Purge Washington DC is coming.
Key West Reader on November 21, 2009 at 3:54 PM
Yes we are going to have to plan a BIG march on dc. Save your money. We’ll need 5 million to make them understand that we mean business.Maybe 2 weeks from today.

FireBlogger on November 21, 2009 at 3:46 PM
Yeah, but will it be too late to get rid of this monstrosity? I hope not. Then I hope Republicans will finally fix the problems that led to this totalitarian take over!
I certainly hope they have learned their lesson!
petunia on November 21, 2009 at 3:55 PM
