Lincoln warns Reid: Drop the public option or next time I’ll filibuster
posted at 4:20 pm on November 21, 2009 by Allahpundit
Today’s moment of truth, courtesy of Greg Hengler. The cave-in comes at the beginning followed by the public-option ultimatum at 3:15. She hit all the points predicted by Jay Cost, i.e. we need reform but maybe not this kind of reform but let’s debate it anyway ’cause I’m a free-thinkin’ moderate, but I’m surprised at how dug in she seemed to be about a public plan. It’ll be hard for her to cave on the next cloture vote having thrown down the gauntlet in a setting as visible as this.
Will today’s “compromise” earn her any goodwill with conservatives? Judging from Palin’s latest tweet, I’m going to guess no:
Not sure I can convince Sen. Lincoln to vote no – but will do everything in my pwr to convince my friends in Arkansas to vote against her.
I was going to give you the clip of Landrieu too, but if she can’t even figure out who it was who first accused her of being bought — hint: not “very partisan Republican bloggers” — then she’s not worth listening to.

Landrieu’s not too concerned. She’s not up for re-election until 2014. By then, she should have been able to funnel a good chunk of that $300 million into the right pockets in Louisiana to assure her another six years, if she wants it.

I suspect that this “soul searching” by Nelson, Bayh, Landrieu and Lincoln was all Kabuki theatre staged to give the voters back home the impression that they were thinking this through. I bet their votes were there all along.
On Thursday, Durbin said Reid knew how Lincoln was voting. Then a little while later he backed off and said it wasn’t sure.
I expect the “well, it’s not a perfect bill, but health care is too important to wait [unlike the troops in Afghanistan] so I’ll vote for final passage. I hope to ‘improve’ it in the future” excuse will be offered by red state Dem senators and Blue Dogs in the House.

Did everyone’s Senators send them return emails with all the obligatory statements about health care costs bankrupting the country? Why do they never answer the very simple questions put to them? If there is so much savings to be had in Medicaid and Medicare, why wasn’t it done all along? Why do Democrats ignore the issue of allowing competition and tort reform? They don’t even bother to come up with their usual b.s. answers as far as I can tell they stick their fingers in their ears and say lalallalalala, like children. I’ve called and I have written, they don’t care. I hope I can encourage enough people to vote them out, it’s the only way.

At least two more major votes for the Senate, one more for the House: To end debate and vote, and then, in both houses, to pass the bill that emerges from conference.
Here’s a recent roadmap from Keith Hennessey, one of the best if not the best color-commentators on the whole thing – also explaining why he puts the odds of final passage of a comprehensive bill at 50/50:
