Glenn Beck: “I am developing a 100 year plan”
posted at 6:07 pm on November 21, 2009 by Allahpundit
- Education is key, and not just for our children. To that end, we will be conducting a series of conventions. These will be full-day experiences where you will be immersed in learning about topics ranging from self-reliance, community organizing, the economy and how to be a political force in your own neighborhood and country. The first one will be in Orlando at UCF Arena on March 27th…
- All of the above will culminate in The Plan, a book that will provide specific policies, principles and, most importantly, action steps that each of us can take to play a role in this Refounding.
- On August 28, 2010, I ask you, your family and neighbors to join me at the feet of Abraham Lincoln on the National Mall for the unveiling of The Plan and the birthday of a new national movement to restore our great country.
He mentioned the “100-year plan” this afternoon at The Villages too, reportedly framing it as a way in which we need to “think like China.” Which … is an interesting model for a libertarian to emulate. Plenty more at that link, including Beck supposedly all but calling for the end of the two-party system. That’s according to a blogger who was tweeting it as it happened; reserve judgment until we get verbatim quotes from news reports later. I’ll update if/when we do.
The NYT interviewed him about all of this, and while he was tight-lipped about specifics of The Plan, “he made clear that he intends to help elect politicians aligned with his limited-government world view.” A quote from the piece:
Mr. Beck rejects the labels like “leader” for himself, saying he is “comfortable with the title of ‘citizen fed up.’”
August 28, the date of the D.C. event, happens to be the anniversary of the “I Have a Dream” speech. Given the allusion to the Lincoln Memorial in Beck’s letter, I’m guessing that’s no coincidence. Eschewing the title of “leader” is thus a curious display of modesty from a guy who thinks his book launch is worthy of a modern-day March on Washington with him in the MLK role. No doubt he’s using the date and location as an homage to King, and will cite his example in bringing about another necessary “Refounding” of America. But I’m willing to bet that that’s not how it’ll be received; it’ll be treated as a window onto his ego and an endless opportunity to sidetrack his movement with racial politics. This is, after all, the guy who famously accused the first black president of having a “deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture.”
Here’s YouTube vid from his book signing this morning. Exit question: Aren’t all his books versions of “The Plan”?

Sigh. And I love Beck.

pookysgirl on November 21, 2009 at 6:10 PM
“we need to think like China” in the CONTEXT Beck used it literally and only means, “plan ahead” and focus on prosperity, not debt.
Changing from a debt-reliant civilization dive takes time and several generations (“100 years”) and requires planning ahead, and ongoing, continued modifications of bad habits to prudent ones.
I should start publishing a “Beck translation guide” to people who take his statements out of context and refuse his common sense as straightforward.
Beck speaks using straightforward expression choices. Unfortunately, too many today are too well accustomed to NON straightforward expressions/language, such that there’s a lot of angst often about “what Beck means” or “oh,my Gosh, he means THAT?” while he didn’t mean “that” but actually meant what he said directly.

I’m very suspicious of people who claim to have a “Plan”…while I applaud him for helping publicize the ACORN story I’ve never liked Beck and this just confirms my opinion of him…he’s just another egomaniacal demagogue.

Allahpundit, why do you hate Glenn Beck?
KevinFnLshow on November 21, 2009 at 6:13 PM
The reason Beck is quite so popular is BECAUSE he’s not engaging in that “code speak” or the dreaded “PC speak” that makes careful.selection.of.words that declines the actual truth but works around and, perhaps, just might direct toward it but then, well, maybe not.
I think this straightforwardness of Beck’s confuses peole who want the code words and not the frank.

SouthernGent on November 21, 2009 at 6:16 PM
It’s more than that. Beck has always ALWAYS framed some of the more heated pick-up-the-guns-and-fight crowd’s calls into his show by reminding them that we need to fight peacefully in the same way MLK did. That is always his go-to example for being able to really change things without violence. He’s probably picked this date and that location as a reminder that the way out of this is for political action, not violence.

yogi41 on November 21, 2009 at 6:18 PM
Yes, I know what he means. I didn’t accuse him of supporting top-down planning or a command economy. Even so, libertarians aren’t normally known for grand ambitions at social engineering. And this *is* a social/cultural movement, as the nine principles reveal. You’re selling it as something purely economic. It isn’t.

Not a Beck fan (or opposed either), don’t watch his show or listen to his radio show, but a social/cultural movement is what REASON et al are after, no?
I’m not understanding why a cultural movement is not congruent with libertarianism. For example, would libertarians not buy Beatles albums in the 60s?

Priceless. Palin/Beck 2012!!

At this point the only hope may very well be something akin to what Beck is pushing. The Founding Fathers were part of a Cultural Revolution. They didn’t just throw down because they wanted Power, they had great ideas that demanded they Revolt.

Knucklehead on November 21, 2009 at 6:25 PM
Yawn. Glenn Beck overestimates himself, trying to get in front of the Tea Party movement. Not really interested in being led by a blowhard.

You’re an idiot. Move to Cuba and be a slave there. Leave us alone.
darwin on November 21, 2009 at 6:25 PM
Exactly. Jefferson’s election, who libertarians seemed to admire, was called a Revolution, at the time.
Spirit of 1776 on November 21, 2009 at 6:25 PM
LOL.
I think that’s the point isn’t it? They’ll buy books on libertarianism, but not really do much to promote it in a real way.
lorien1973 on November 21, 2009 at 6:26 PM
I think other political talk show hosts realize their power and influence is limited. Beck doesn’t seem to comprehend this yet.

He should have joined the Ron Paul support as his big announcement. We need all kind soldiers to defeat Palin, Romney, Huckabee, and the rest of that set in 2012 and to get the Constitution back in its rightful place IMO.
The Dean on November 21, 2009 at 6:30 PM
I may have my problems with his style, and I don’t at all agree with his “a pox on both your houses” cop-out with parties, but he’s dead right when he says that its way too late to worry about slippery slopes and slow socialism. We’re here! We’ve arrived! The abyss is right at our feet!
Its way past the point where we need to elect the right people – the real solution is that we need to BE the right people.
And we don’t need to change the law, or defeat our opponents’ attempt to change the law, we need to change the Constitution so that such an attempt becomes unthinkable. We need to put teeth into the 10th Amendment, plug the gaping holes from the General Welfare Clause and the Interstate Commerce Clause and the Incorporation Doctrine and a whole range of Constitutional betrayals perpetrated on the soul of America by the Supreme Court. A new Congress will be too late. We need a new start!
If Beck wants to make a serious step in that direction, then I’m ready to listen.

Um, Beck is NOT the only conservative who is outspoken, organized, moving, speaking out, etc. There are multitudes of activist groups. Again, just because someone disagrees with him does not make them a traitor, rino, or otherwise indifferent. We might just be interested in reforming the REPUBLICAN party rather than risk a second term loss to Obama because of the Perot effect.

Without a doubt we need that.

What’s with all the anti-Beck sentiment?
All I can say is I actually think he is on to something. I watched Orin Hatch last night on Greta…. and he was trying to “talk tough” on the healthcare bill. He had on his shiny suit and politicians smile… As I watched all I could think was “aaarrgghhh!!! you are part of the problem you freaking dinosaur!! JUST GO AWAY!”
johnnyboy on November 21, 2009 at 6:38 PM
Sad that the one guy on TV who is actually standing up for America and conservatives gets dismissed so quickly by conservatives. He’s doing more for conservatism than all of the naysayers on here combined. I will stand with Beck!
Narutoboy on November 21, 2009 at 6:38 PM
More like, why does he hate the Right?
As long as HA employs this creep, it exposes itself as the charade it is. It’s all about the hits, not a movement, not a philosophy, not conservatism.
HA is aptly named, nothing but hot air.
The sad fact is that what GB is preaching is correct – to the point that any human can be correct about anything. We all need to reflect back to the times of our Founders and start giving serious thought and debate about what America is. Are we about liberty and freedom? Or communism and Marxism? Will we be governed, or will we govern ourselves.
The meek shall inherit the Earth…only to be ruled by the devil.
Liberty is dead.

When I finished reading Allah’s post and watched Glenn Beck’s speech, I kept thinking about the Beatles’ “Revolution” song.
Anyway, I had trepidation about third party and his selling a book the day of the Lincoln Memorial meet-up.
The GOP keeps asking us for money, yet we always have crossovers and no cohesiveness in the platform of small government and cutting taxes.
I think Glenn is giving us, the average person, a voice. He figuratively and literally has a huge megaphone to voice what we want and not want.
Currently, I see the senate pukes debating a $2 trillion healthcare plan, ignoring what the overwhelming majority want, which is NO healthcare. I must say: GO GLENN BECK!
cubachi on November 21, 2009 at 6:41 PM
OK all you Beck bashers… what the hell have you got for an answer to this 1930′s Germany style nightmare that is overtaking us?
Huh? Beck has been doing the work that no one else will do and has taken nothing but crap for it every step of the way while all you arm chair quarterbacks diss him, his ideas, his energy, his insight and HIS results (exposing the most corrupt admin and a stealth coup taking over the US and singlehandedly forcing out some of Obama’s commies).
Get your own plan…. or hear his out before you open your big traps and dismiss what the guy has in mind cause you don’t know all the facts yet!
Beck is the only one thinking outside the box and is probably the only one smart enough to outfox the great COMMUNITY ORGANIZER!

lurker9876 on November 21, 2009 at 6:42 PM
As I’ve stated in the past:
Education is the key
WASP’s are the key (trolls, remember I say this as a brown skinned Mexican, trolls callensen la pinchi boca)
Community organization is the key
Local level activism is the key
The triumvirate needs to get on board. They have not organized anything to coalesce the conservative movement. They hide in bunkers, ride around in jets, and complain on the radio. They need to mobilize and stop being GOP marketers.
My preference is the GOP for a revival, but it will not happen if they are not held to account. The only way to hold them accountable is to show them we don’t fear their threats of “they have no other choice,” that era is over.
Control at the local level is imperative. Everyone here can take control of their community with just a bit of organization. Stay tuned.

Yeah, The Villages is an interesting place. My parents have had a place down there for 10 years and it has grown a ton. They are a world unto their own and they would have loved Glenn Beck there if he had said anything.
It’s a big yawn. Beck wants people to watch his show and buy his books. He’s mostly irrelevant.
ThackerAgency on November 21, 2009 at 6:43 PM
Really? ’cause it doesn’t look that way out here on the west coast, which R’s seem to have simply ceded to a permanent D majority.
What beck is talking about is an R version of the Tides foundation – of ACORN, SEIU, and all the other organizations he talks about on his show. He’s talking about urban conservatism, black conservatism, all the things that too many R politicians don’t seem to bother with.
The guy spends most of his shows pointing out all these interwoven links of leftist organizations, and contrary to what you might think, they have been doing this for much longer and are much better at it than the R party.
Of course, leave it AP, who’d rather simply observe the fall of the republic, to snark on Glenn Beck.
