Wow: Palin’s publisher boosts print run from 1.5 million to 2.5 million
posted at 8:35 pm on November 20, 2009 by Allahpundit
Three days after the book dropped, having already produced an enormous first run, they’re forced to ramp it up by two-thirds to meet demand. Amazing. Imagine the number if the book was being carried in San Francisco.
To put this in perspective, revisit this passage from yesterday’s Daily Beast item announcing that she’d moved 300,000 units on day one:
Going Rogue is going gangbusters, and it looks like both Palin and her publisher, HarperCollins, are going to make some serious money off of it. According to industry insiders, Palin got a $7 million advance for her book. She’s earning a royalty rate of 15 percent, which means she makes $4.35 per book sold, and therefore needs to sell 1.6 million books to earn out her advance. The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday that HarperCollins had printed another 100,000 copies of Going Rogue, bringing the total in print to 1.6 million. Palin would need to sell all of those to earn out her advance, so it’s unlikely that’s going to happen.
But HarperCollins will be making money long before that. There’s a rule of thumb in the industry that publishers net about $10 per hardcover sold, after expenses, but before the cost of the advance. Once she’s sold 700,000 copies, then, HarperCollins is in the black. And what of that 1.6 million printed? An ideal “sell-through” rate is about 75 percent, which means HarperCollins thinks it’s going to sell about 1.2 million copies. At that level, Palin will have made $7 million and HarperCollins $5 million of its own.
Assuming HC has that sell-through rate in mind, boosting production to 2.5 million copies means they’re now expecting to sell north of 1.8 million — and that Palin will more than earn out her advance, gigantic as it is at a cool $7 mil. The only questions now are whether they’ll boost production yet again(!) and how long it’ll be before the rumors start about another book. The obvious choice for a topic is the future of conservatism, which won’t sell as much as a personal memoir but will still do plenty of business among grassroots righties, especially if it’s rushed out in time for the midterms. Exit question: You know who I bet is awfully excited about all this? Sarah Palin’s uterus.

I’m happy for her. But I bet Frumbody isn’t very happy about it.
The more her message gets out there, and the more enthusiasm her brand (and conservatism) gets, the better.

I mentioned this awhile ago, of what I thought an SNL spoof on Palin and her book launch would be. I`m posting it again in the hopes that people will read it and we`ll see if I`m proven right. They`ll do a sketch like so….
1.) It`ll be like a coloring book.
2.) She`ll have someone “help her with the big words.”
Look for it.

I’ve read about half. It’s very nicely done. The setting alone makes for a good read. Alaska is fascinating.
The political stories are also done at the right depth…not too self-obsessed or detailed as to become a tome.
The writer honestly did deserve a by-line. It’s particularly well done.
AnninCA on November 20, 2009 at 8:49 PM
Did anyone see BOR interview Sarah tonight? Wouldn’t you love to see anyone interview Obama like that. I bet $1000.00 there is no interview of Obama that has any interviewer asking him the questions and in the tone O’Reilly just did with Sarah. She did fantastic but of course he had to have some Liberal woman on right away to try to take some of the shine off of Sarah’s great performance.
CCRWM on November 20, 2009 at 8:49 PM
She needs to drop off from the scene and get in the background a bit after this bus tour… a run at 2012 is not going to happen… and it’s not going to happen for Romney, Huck, Giuliani, etc either… no one who was a mojor figure in 2008 in the republican side should be a major figure in 2012… wait till 2016/20… Palin could run in 2036 and still be the same age as McCain when he ran in 2008…

I know you take a lot of crap here from the ignorant and intolerant, but don’t let it make you mean.
Anyway, OT, I had occasion to talk to a physician today and I asked about the health care bill.
He said it was a piece of crap. I said “but the AMA has endorsed it.” He said “They themselves are just a bunch of politicians” and “They’re just positioning themselves to take over health care when it passes” and “a poll was conducted of 12,000 physicians, 70% oppose the bill”, etc.
It was an interesting discussion.
By the way, I was at a bookstore earlier today, a Barnes and Noble (where I rarely go because they’re liberal), and I don’t think they had Palin’s book prominently displayed. I didn’t see it, but I didn’t look for it, either.

The questions that BOR asked her were tough, I just wished she had mentioned the people in Iran wanting a regime change.
Her foriegn policy views are roughly cut right now. To use her words, I’m just calling it like I saw it.
Now…when BOR interviewed Obama last year, Obama’s answers were really disturbing. It’s no wonder if we FF a year that he doesn’t know what to do about anything. You could see this coming with his BOR interview.
I think Palin needs to study more about foreign policy for sure, but her “america needs to be the super power” and “obama shouldn’t bow down” is good.
She’s tough; if she could be commanding in foreign policy she’d be a force.
But look at Obama, he’s very “cerebral” and he’s paralysed right now.

You know that’s a great idea. If only a tenth of the bookbuyers did that, imagine how many libraries across the USA and the rest of the world would be giving readers a chance to see for themselves. There may be many folks out there who wouldn’t buy the book, but once it’s on a library shelf and they can check it out for free, they may just read it. And that’s all Sarah asks. Just read it.

The ‘cerebral’ line is the end-all argument libs use to say everything is fine.
I know a few “cerebral” people and they are clueless about the real world and have NO common sense.
Sound familiar? It’s not a good trait.
Palin has tons of common sense and understands this country.
The fact that she isn’t a rhoads scholar isn’t really that terrible of a thing to me.
Look how “brilliant” Obama is in giving us a 1.5 trillion deficit and China is yelling at him now. Oh and here’s another 2-4 trillion health care bill for us.

I have a client/friend who is a small publisher. The standard royalty is 17%, BUT that is on the actual wholesale price of books sold. The standard wholesale price is 45% of cover, so Sarah Palin should be making @ 2.21 per book.
