Wow: Palin’s publisher boosts print run from 1.5 million to 2.5 million

Three days after the book dropped, having already produced an enormous first run, they’re forced to ramp it up by two-thirds to meet demand. Amazing. Imagine the number if the book was being carried in San Francisco.

To put this in perspective, revisit this passage from yesterday’s Daily Beast item announcing that she’d moved 300,000 units on day one:

Going Rogue is going gangbusters, and it looks like both Palin and her publisher, HarperCollins, are going to make some serious money off of it. According to industry insiders, Palin got a $7 million advance for her book. She’s earning a royalty rate of 15 percent, which means she makes $4.35 per book sold, and therefore needs to sell 1.6 million books to earn out her advance. The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday that HarperCollins had printed another 100,000 copies of Going Rogue, bringing the total in print to 1.6 million. Palin would need to sell all of those to earn out her advance, so it’s unlikely that’s going to happen.

But HarperCollins will be making money long before that. There’s a rule of thumb in the industry that publishers net about $10 per hardcover sold, after expenses, but before the cost of the advance. Once she’s sold 700,000 copies, then, HarperCollins is in the black. And what of that 1.6 million printed? An ideal “sell-through” rate is about 75 percent, which means HarperCollins thinks it’s going to sell about 1.2 million copies. At that level, Palin will have made $7 million and HarperCollins $5 million of its own.

Assuming HC has that sell-through rate in mind, boosting production to 2.5 million copies means they’re now expecting to sell north of 1.8 million — and that Palin will more than earn out her advance, gigantic as it is at a cool $7 mil. The only questions now are whether they’ll boost production yet again(!) and how long it’ll be before the rumors start about another book. The obvious choice for a topic is the future of conservatism, which won’t sell as much as a personal memoir but will still do plenty of business among grassroots righties, especially if it’s rushed out in time for the midterms. Exit question: You know who I bet is awfully excited about all this? Sarah Palin’s uterus.

If middle America now basically sees Sarah as intelligent and competent that is huge IMHO.

As for to the liberal elites I couldn’t give a rip what they think or say.

She needs to drop off from the scene and get in the background a bit after this bus tour… a run at 2012 is not going to happen… and it’s not going to happen for Romney, Huck, Giuliani, etc either… no one who was a mojor figure in 2008 in the republican side should be a major figure in 2012… wait till 2016/20… Palin could run in 2036 and still be the same age as McCain when he ran in 2008…

I think you are getting ahead of yourself. Let’s see how angry the country is come mid-terms. If the House and Senate lose the number of seats (on the Dem side) that is being predicted, the landscape will change considerably.

I don’t know that woman on O’Reilly (the lib) and good God I’d have to slam the door in that b’s face if she ever came calling. She mocked Sarah’s remark about “elitists”, making snide remarks about the money Sarah’s making on the book deals, insinuating that Gov. Palin was elitist for making that much money.

Wow, so cut and dried with liberals. They so friggin’ clueless. I’m ready to send an email to O’Reilly that he needs to educate the libs he gets on to show his fair and balanced viewpoint. It’s not about the money, morons, it’s about the attitude.

Clyde5445 on November 20, 2009 at 9:58 PM

Reading the book. So many people said she wasn’t ready, she wasn’t ready. She WAS ready for all but one thing… telling the handlers and operatives to sit down and shut the hell up! The scripted non-answer part will make you want to pull your hair out. To them, it was all about image. To her, it’s all about ideas, positions, and how much she loves the country. God bless her. I’m glad some of that shone through the piles of bs she had around her! That will not be a problem the next time around, I assure you.

Interestingly, this is a recurrent theme in her life… on the B team and enduring losing seasons. But when she’s on the A team, she wins. I think she probably doesn’t follow real well anyway, but she was trying to follow people who were at best incoherent and scattered and at worst out to show her how much better they were than her. Her biggest problem was she wasn’t comfortable enough in her role to take charge. Instead, she was trying to play by their rules. Guaranteed she will not make that mistake ever again.

AnninCA on November 20, 2009 at 8:49 PM

The writer DID get the by-line. Maybe you missed it. It’s right there across the top of the cover: SARAH PALIN.

(You are thinking of a “ghost-writer” as if he wrote it. He didn’t. He helped write it, edit, etc. She wrote it. You can tell if you’ve ever heard her speak. This is Sarah all the way… oh, and you might be surprised to know that before McCain plucked her out of total obscurity, she had been writing op-eds on energy for the NYT… take that anyone who says she’s not smart enough to write on her own. Good grief, the woman worked as a journalist. This meme about her needing help to write the book is about as bogus as Joe Biden’s foreign policy expertise!)

On the BOR interview.
To me the most important Question was are ready to be President. With out hestitiation Sarah said YES. I wasn’t to keen on how BOR phrased the question but the answer was unquivical. Lets all remember at this point and time what is important is to have a basic understanding of all the policy issues and our Lady Liberty has it. At one point Sarah caught her self because she was just about to unload on Obama. One last thing Sarah was very careful to stated millitary action against Iran is a last resort idea. Sarah understand what is at play and thats all we can ask for.

anyone that would vote for this guy is an idiot. crist is what is wrong with politics. his non answers, his willingness to go with the blowing wind. We need far far less crists on the national stage thank you

But instead of hitching himself to a rising star in the GOP base, Crist simply noted Palin’s apparent lack of interest in the race. Her support “hasn’t been offered,” he said when asked if he would welcome her backing.

Pressed whether he’d accept the endorsement if Palin offered it, Crist declined to answer, shutting the door of his SUV and driving off.

And unlike some GOPers who have called for Treas. Sec. Tim Geithner to step down for his role in the economic crisis, Crist offered a vague and noncommital response.

The U.S. needs a “better economic policy overall,” he said, emphasizing the need to cut back on taxes and spending. “Whatever it takes to get to that place is what we need to do.”

Crist would not rule out calling on Geithner to step down in the future.

“I’d have to evaluate it, to be fair,” he said.

Sarah Palin: In the Midnight Hour
http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=178974418434 ^ | 11-20-09 | Sarah Palin

The Senate is set to vote Saturday night, right before the holiday, on a motion to proceed on its latest health care government take-over bill. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is pushing for yet another weekend vote (commonplace now for the party of “transparency”) because he knows that the American people will be none too happy about the Democrats’ proposal the longer they have to look it over.

A vote against the Democrats’ motion will help stop Obamacare before it gets any closer to becoming a reality. While this Saturday night vote might seem like a procedural matter, at the end of the day a vote against Senator Reid’s motion is a vote against massive new government spending and a take-over of 1/6th of the U.S. economy; it’s a vote against billions in tax increases and penalties; it’s a vote against federal funding of abortion; and it’s a vote against considering responsible tort reform.

And in case you hadn’t heard – just a reminder that you’ll start paying higher taxes to fund this scheme in 2010 even though it doesn’t start up until 2014. Only in Washington does that make any sense. Among the provisions in this bill will be a $2500 cap on Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs). The IRS allows families with special needs children to use FSAs to cover educational expenses. This new $2500 cap will hit these families especially hard and cost them hundreds of dollars in new taxes every year.

Contact your senators and tell them to vote against the motion to proceed tomorrow night. The American people don’t support this – we support the commonsense solutions that have been proposed, but totally ignored by (at this point) some out-of-control Washington politicians. Let’s put a stop to Obamacare before it goes any farther.

Clyde5445 on November 21, 2009 at 12:18 AM

Has anyone noticed the press saying that Sarah has a strong base but she can’t bring out the independents. I’m beginning to think the press is saying this on purpose so the Republicans, in tough campaigns, won’t call her in to campaign with them. I beginning to not believe it. Hell, look at NY23, she lead the way in changing that whole thing and these people were going to settle for Scozzafava.

I’m starting to look at this as the media wing, of the Democratic Party, attacking her to lessen her credibility, so she doesn’t use her star power to change some tight elections around.

AnninCA on November 21, 2009 at 1:08 AM

Ann…Sarah didn’t have a “ghost writer.” She did have a COLLABORATOR, Lynn Vincent.

Ghost writers are rarely announced before a book is out there. HarperCollins announced that Lynn would be collaborating with Sarah.

It’s very interesting. Many books will have the acknowledgments up front. They are usually short and sweet, one page or less. Sarah chose the end of the book, starting on page 409. and running for five whole pages! Lynn Vincent is credited here. Just reading the way Sarah writes these 5 pages tells you all you need to know about her.

BTW, the reason the book came together so quick is because Sarah has kept journals since she was a kid. Saved ‘em all too. This obviously made writing the book pretty simple!

She kept a journal during the campaign too.

Reagan kept journals as well. Though not in his early life.

I sent my $100. to SARAH’CUDA’S PAC. Why give the profits to the booksellers? When someone like Sarah is taking the fight to the enemy–give her all the ammo (money) you can.
***
I hope I get to vote for her. Close all republican primaries to crossover voters to keep from getting another RINO candidate.
***
I think Sarah needs Secret Service protection now. Or let her take her rifle with her on the campaign trail. I had hoped to vote for Robert Kennedy–a Muslim terrorist murdered him to keep him from becoming POTUS. This could happen to Sarah Palin–our enemies want Comrade Obama (PBUH) and his clones to stay in power here forever. Sarah Palin is like Ronald Reagan was–she is their worst nightmare come true.

Bill O’Reilly interviews like the NYG blitzed Tom Brady in the Super Bowl two years, relentlessly coming from all different directions so that he would remain UNCOMFORTABLE throughout the game.

What I saw from Bill was a staccato, rapid-fire technique of putting the interviewee on the spot and forcing Sarah to think on her feet and demonstrate poise without getting flustered.

Don’t get me wrong. I am not criticizing Bill. To his credit he allowed her to answer the questions without butting in, but when he knew she was finished with the answer, he did not pause in asking another question-an efficient use of TV air time.

Nobody else had done that to Sarah before and I think it helped show Sarah’s serious side and that was and is smart. She hardly smiled through part 2 of the interview which was good.

I know Bill is not everybody’s cup of tea, but Sarah passed the test with flying colors.

The book may not sell in SF Bay. Letterman, Madcow and Olbermann and other sexual deviants would sell there. Gov Palin is too classy and to healthy and normal.

Too long. It should be one word, “Dangerous.”

How about:
Dangerous!”

And, no, I think a ghost-writer wrote it and Palin did the edit/revisions, etc.

AnninCA on November 21, 2009 at 1:08 AM

Really? To quote Sarah – that sounds backasswards. More likely Sarah wrote it and Vincent edited it for style and flow.

katiejane on November 21, 2009 at 10:27 AM

BTW, Huffington Post made their Main Story with HUGE HEADLINES about the screamers at the last signing.

AnninCA on November 21, 2009 at 2:22 AM

All the liberal anguish over some unhappy people suprises me. It’s hard to believe that anyone would fault Palin for the excessive number of people showing up. Maybe they are entitled to be unhappy that the signings weren’t scheduled for longer periods of time or that the stores gave out too many wristbands but now Palin should be blamed for her popularity?

katiejane on November 21, 2009 at 10:31 AM

Remember, it took Obama over a year and 8 printings to sell just 800,000 copies of his turd of a book.

Norwegian on November 20, 2009

Another distinction is that Gov. Palin’s book will actually be read.
I truly believe that Obama’s book was bought mostly by people who couldn’t get close enough to touch the hem of his garment. They show their loyalty by having the book, not by reading it. Hell, Obama doesn’t care that they don’t read it. He just wants the sales numbers to justify his self-image.
Libs may argue the same holds true for Gov. Palin’s book, but a quick comparison of her actions, fueled by her convictions and concern for her constituents, and Obama’s
actions, fueled by narcissism and hatred for American ideals, quickly puts the lie to that notion.

SKYFOX on November 21, 2009 at 11:13 AM

Buying her book is a two-fer –

We get to support Sarah and send a CLEAR message to Washington at the same time. Buying her book is a repudiation of Obama. That’s why they all keep trying to act like it’s not a big deal.

Palin was spot on quitting her gov job. I wish she would just spell out how the dems and repubs in alaska made it impossible for her to function. She had an 80% approval rating in Alaska before being tapped for VP. They all turned against her after the election. It’s not like anything changed in how she was doing her job as gov.

I think she doesn’t say it because it makes her sound weak.

Stephanie on November 21, 2009 at 11:19 AM

Any ghost-writer is only as good as the information, so I totally believed that she’s kept journals.

I liked “seeing” what she kept track about, too. That’s insight.

I don’t buy for a minute that she wrote the draft.

Sorry. But it doesn’t matter to me. I just thought the writer should have gotten a “shout-out.”

AnninCA on November 21, 2009 at 1:57 AM

Wow, you didn’t even read what I wrote. Oy!

Sarah DOES give a shout out to Lynn! By definition, “ghost writers” as you insist on calling Lynn (something she is NOT) are never, ever acknowledged.

Seriously, the entire idea of having a “ghost writer” is to make people think YOU wrote the book. Sarah, Lynn Vincent, and HarperCollins were up front when the book was announced and told the world that Lynn would be collaborating with Sarah.

Sorry to be such a major a-hole here, but using the words “ghost writer” instead of collaborator, is not helpful, and just lends credence to the filth on the left.

In other words, stop saying “ghost writer” the proper word id COLLABORATOR.

And once more, since you are hard headed, Sarah thanks Lynn in the book.

How many hours do you think it took for Sarah’s book to outsell his?
Joe Caps on November 20, 2009 at 8:59 PM

Dunno… is this a trick question? (0.0008?)

But look at Obama, he’s very “cerebral” and he’s paralysed right now.

Why, Bill Ayers’s Barack Obama’s own autobiography, of course!

In the circadian rhythm of the troll/moby cycle, we must be in the moby cycle right now. No trolls to be seen, but mobys galore.

… that woman on O’Reilly (the lib) … mocked Sarah’s remark about “elitists”, making snide remarks about the money Sarah’s making on the book deals, insinuating that Gov. Palin was elitist for making that much money.

Annietxgrl on November 20, 2009 at 9:53 PM

So, Palin’s an “elitist hick” now? That’s an oxymoron.

Whereas, this woman’s comments on O’Reilly make her an elitist hack — something that is perfectly logically consistent.
