Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on November 20, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

You knew we would come back to this one, right? Be sure to read Allahpundit’s takedown from Wednesday, but Barack Obama’s effort to sell federal-court trials for Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four of his closest friends as both fair and convictions a foregone conclusion had even NBC scratching its head:

NBC: Khalid Sheikh Mohammed — can you understand why it is offensive to some for this terrorist to get all the legal privileges of any American citizen?

Obama: I don’t think it will be offensive at all when he’s convicted and when the death penalty is applied to him.

NBC: But having that kind of confidence of a conviction — I mean one of the purposes of doing — going to the Justice Department and not military court is to show of the the world our fairness in our court system.

Obama: Well —

NBC: But you also just said that he was going to be convicted and given the death penalty.

Obama: Look — what I said was people will not be offended if that’s the outcome. I’m not pre-judging, I’m not going to be in that courtroom, that’s the job of prosecutors, the judge and the jury.

If convictions in the federal courts are going to be an inevitable result, then how does that show the world the fairness of our court system?  Obama seems blissfully oblivious to that contradiction until NBC points it out.  But even apart from that, Obama — and for that matter Eric Holder — never explain why it’s such a high priority to turn KSM’s adjudication into a multiyear advertisement for how groovy the American court system can be.

Nor, for that matter, does Obama satisfactorily explain in that context why KSM and the other four 9/11 plotters get a federal trial, but al-Nashiri and dozens of other Gitmo detainees will get the military tribunals that Congress wanted for all of them, KSM included.  Obama implies that the rest of the detainees will get something other than “fairness in our court system” because the others attacked military targets rather than civilian, which means that if terrorists really want the fairest treatment from the US, they should always attack civilians rather than our military.

Curious incentive system Obama has set up.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

The entire world has to be laughing at this judicial clusterflap and it’s organizers; Obama and Holder.

Wonder if Obama will be called as a witness?
As in, the KSM Defense lawyer saying: “Were you as President of the United States trying to influence the jury? If so, I call a mistrial and a change of venue to a neutral 3rd party country.”

Too good to check category. Got this in an e-mail today:

WHAT???? This is incredible. Nidal Hasan, the Ft. Hood Terrorist, was actually on Obama’s Homeland Security Transition Team.

Is it any wonder that Obama tried to play down Nidal as just a man pressured by his job instead of a terrorist. Is it any wonder that Obama wants to squash an investigation of the entire Nidal Hasan incident.

Go to page #29 of the attached document and see Nidal’s name listed as one of the participants…..Can you imagine that, the President had a man that was exhibiting radical Islamic tendencies as one of the participants of this event. Of all the egregious errors in judgment, this one takes the cake.

Open the attached document and go to page #32 and scan the left hand column.
APPENDIX C

Task Force Event Participants

Nidal Hasan of the Uniformed Services University School of Medicin

is listed on page #32, appendix “C” of the document as a “task force event participant”.

This is unbelivable, but true. The document is attached..

Nidal Hasan, the killer at Fort Hood, was on Obama’s “Homeland Security
Transition team,” the group responsible, as I understand it, for focusing
Homeland Security onto white and conservative Tea Party groups as being “dangerous.”

I think we’re watching Act I, Scene I, from Obama & Holder present The Big Lie.

Obama says KSM’s goose in cooked, and when asked on several occasions what he will do if KSM is not convicted due to some legal technicality Holder’s answer has been consistently the same – “We will win.” At first I thought this rather foolish on his part, but when looking at the situation through the right lens it all begins to make sense.

How is it possible that Obama and Holder can say the guy’s guilty, we know it and we will win, and never expect saying so will come back to bite them, given the way our judicial system is set up to give the defendant so many opportunites to walk? Simple. It’s all a big ploy, a big lie.

Let’s face it, they have already scored all the points they need to with their far left base. They have committed themselves to trying KSM in NYC, in a civil trial, in order to embarrass Bush and to begin the process of closing Gitmo – or so it would seem. With everyone in an uproar over their decision to move the trial to NYC, as surely they knew would happen, they can play the game out, render to public pressure, blame it on republicans, fold up their tent, and agree to have KSM tried by a military tribunal at Gitmo.

So they can say he’s guilty all they want. They can say they have no follow-up plan if the trial goes badly. Because they know the civil trial will never take place. That’s not their game plan, never was. Saying it is, is their clever little way of appeasing their base.

We all know they have been a scheming pack of wolves ever since they took over. One lie after another.

Well, this is another one.

The astonishing shallowness of this bunch of clowns is a danger to us all. Does he not hear what he is saying? He will be given a fair trial then executed. What the hell kind of moronic statement is that?

This is going to be a massive fcuk-up, and it’s going to bite the BO08, and us, very, very hard. The utter stupidity of this breathtakingly foolish blunder, and the obvious, complete lack of forethought on the part of both Odumbo and Eric Dick Holder start to make me wonder from whom the Clown in Chief and that other flyweight numbskull are taking their orders. Neither of them can produce any convincing rationale for this travesty — witness Holder’s embarrassing performance in testimony to Congress. Something stinks badly. Is it (yet another) a way for their lawyer friends to get rich at the expense of the American Taxpayer?

Hmm, prima facie that theory seems to have some good logic behind it. Smoke-and-mirrors for the left. As dumb as they are, though, some of the lefties may get wise, and hell hath no fury like a nasty liberal scorned by his boy-toy. This could be bad news for Odumobo and Dick Holder.

mr.blacksheep on November 20, 2009 at 10:32 AM

Accused Ft. Hood, Texas killer Nidal Malik Hasan did, in fact, participate in a project of George Washington University’s Homeland Security Policy Institute called “The HSPI Presidential Transition Task Force,” but this purely academic body had nothing to do with Obama’s official Homeland Security transition team.

Urban Legends already . . .

Just a theory. Here’s to hoping they’re clever, and not stupid, for the sake of all Americans.

Look — what I said was people will not be offended if that’s the outcome. I’m not pre-judging

I guess that’s why Barry, just a few seconds earlier in this interview, was so careful to say “I don’t think it will be offensive at all if he’s convicted and if the death penalty is applied to him.”

Oh, wait . . .

I don’t think it will be offensive at all when he’s convicted and when the death penalty is applied to him.

Well, it’s an understandable mistake. After all, it’s not like Barry is some kind of legal expert, or ever claimed he was a Constitutional Law Professor, or some sort of genius or something.

Oh, wait . . . .

Try this one! I think we need a special prosecutor. I do not trust Congress to oversee the Fort Hood terrorist massacre after the 911 commission Whitewash!

Both Holder and Obama are winging it and making shit up as they go. When this farce of a trial kicks off, people are REALLY GOING TO BE PISSED! Holder better start making room under that bus for himself. Barry has already said that ‘this is Holder’s decision’.

John the Libertarian on November 20, 2009 at 11:40 AM

I truly hope that is the case, but I think this is bit more random. I fear most of the MSM would still like to carry water for him, they just don’t know when they occasionally shed light on his destructive truth. Even though popular opinion is starting to shift, much of the media will still struggle to fulfill their task as Lib propagandists.

Tom_OC on November 20, 2009 at 11:56 AM

Reading, and listening to all of this, I truly believe this isn’t about bringing terrorists, who killed thousands to justice, or about our court system, and how “fair” Obama, or Holder can make it appear to the world.

This is about bringing to light info, that should never be made public, so long as we’re at war. It’s to embarrass and bring wrath apon Bush, Cheney, and all Republicans.

I konw that Palin is a dumb bunny hick from 50 miles from no-where and she can’t do a decent interview with Katie Couric because she’s sooooo dumb….

And I know that Obama is a Public Intellectual type U of C Law Professor, and probably the smartest president we’ve ever had (remember the sweet question that Imus asked…what’s his IQ?)

but I daresay Palin would not have said something so stupid

Something else to remember: Whenever 0 has to decide between a more economical way to do something or to choose the most expensive, he will also obligate the tax payer to fund the most expensive. How many millions more will it take to try KSM in NY? Not considering how many more years it will take.

Isn’t it obvious they don’t care? They aren’t spending their own money, and they never do “frugal”

Cybergeezer on November 20, 2009 at 3:18 PM

The question has already been asked as to where the government is going to find 12 (qualified?) people who have never heard of 9/11 or have no opinion.

Why hasn’t anyone asked these questions:
(1) The cost for creating new identities for those jurors, the prosecution team, the judge – and all their families?
(2) The cost for relocating all these citizens to new homes and new jobs – and maintaining their security?
(3) How they will address the possible (probable?) kidnapping/murder of relatives of these individuals?
(4) What is the benefit our county obtains for the enormous additional cost in both money and lives?
(5) What possible reason must America and Americans pay this price?
