Surprise: Many San Francisco booksellers refusing to carry Palin’s book; Update: Palin apologizes to those whose books weren’t signed
posted at 4:58 pm on November 20, 2009 by Allahpundit
Don’t jump to conclusions. It’s not that the retailers are closed-minded. It’s their customers who are closed-minded.
Well, okay. Some of the retailers are closed-minded too.
“Our customers are thinking people,” said Nathan Embretson, a bookseller at Pendragon Books in Oakland. “They’re not into reading drivel.”
There’s not a single copy on the shelf. Embretson said no one has asked for it except for one guy, who was kidding.
“He said he wanted to look at it but he also said he didn’t really want to read it,” Embretson said. “Anyway, he certainly didn’t want to buy it. I think he regarded looking at it as a kind of punishment.”…
Had she ordered 50 copies of the book, Cotleur said, she would probably wind up shipping 50 copies of the book back to the publisher in a couple of weeks.
“I would expect to take a bath on it,” she said. “The job of a book buyer is to be something of a psychic. You have to know your community. I don’t want to waste a lot of money and shelf space on a book nobody wants.’
Really? No one in the community’s interested in … a presidential campaign tell-all? I’m no fan of The One but I’ll bet David Plouffe’s book is a pretty gripping read. Your quote of the day from one of the lords of tolerance:
“Anything like that we wouldn’t carry,” said clerk Emily Stackhouse. “We’re a small store and it would probably gross us all out. Some things you carry because of freedom of speech, but a book like that is just gross.”
If I recall correctly, the “that’s gross” exception to free speech was articulated in the landmark case of Ohmigod v. Ewww. If you’re wondering what kind of books are carried in these shops, evidently because they don’t run afoul of the gross-out exception, Pajamas Media has got you covered.
While we’re on the subject of unhappiness about Palin’s book, here’s a clip shot outside the Indiana book signing after the event ended promptly at 9 p.m. — even though, allegedly, another 150 people were in line to have their copies autographed. Dave Weigel notes that you can hear people heckling her about “quitting on the job.” It may be that she and the HarperCollins people decided they simply had to get out of there promptly at nine to make the next stop on time; interestingly, Politico’s story about the signing makes no mention of any displeasure among the crowd, and Politico’s not known for spinning in Palin’s favor. Maybe there’s more to this than meets the eye? One last footnote: Someone on Twitter told me that 500 books were signed in Columbus today versus 1,000 that were slotted for the Indiana event. Could be they’re scaling back to a more manageable number in order to stay on schedule.
Update: A new Facebook note from Palin promises to make amends to the crowd in the vid:
I’ve been told that yesterday there were supporters in Noblesville who stood in long lines for hours in the cold and rain, and the book signing event ended without a chance to say hello to everyone who showed up. I am so sorry. We are working on a solution for those who were left behind.
I apologize.

“They’re not into reading drivel.”
Nah, their average customer more likely prefers to curl up in bed at night with the latest S and M and bondage manuals.
Much headier stuff.

Its not about the individual booksellers
Its about the communities they cater to
And how their customers are so stupidly stupid that the booksellers have to behave stupidly too
just to stay in business and not have their store boycotted ( like Whole Foods)
or have a bunch of noisy smelly bums ( like Code Pink) outside their business harassing their customers

Politico has a new article up that addresses the crowd who could not get a signature. According to their account these people did not have tickets:

Doesn’t paint a pretty picture…

Sounded more like the guy holding the camera and a woman with him(near enough to be heard) that were the only ones doing any shouting. Others were just chanting for Sarah. Mole hill not mountain.

This is soo funny! In Sf the major sellers carry everything. There are a number of used book stores that are hanging on from the 60′s. Needless to say, these little stores sell very few books, and make almost no money selling books. They usually sell various drug paraphenalia and incense and such. Needless to say, their customers are not interested in anything that does not have some sort of Dali picture on the cover.

Thanks for shedding a little light, Opp. Day.
If the bookstore made a business decision, fair enough – and I can respect that. But the condescending little guy on the counter needs to stop sneering at his (potential) customers and their choices. It’s the same at my Borders – they lectured me on my book choices and the fact that I didn’t buy one of their eco-bags, so I dumped the whole lot on the counter and told them I wouldn’t be back and would buy my books from an online source in future. Loudly.

A major bookstore in NJ (B&N) had 3 copies of Michelle’s book on the day it was released, and it was hidden in the back of the store, not up in front with the other new releases.
I guess the bookstores have something against conservative women….and capitalism (they’re not making money!)

This is the same SF that had sexually oriented businesses near an elementary school but protested the opening of a “Hooters” franchise because it was a corporation.
This is the same SF whose city council spent months on a resolution to impeach “the BOOOSH” while ignoring increasing crime and homelessness and a growing budget shortfall.
This is the same SF who hired an incompetent Chief of Police based on “diversity”.
This is the same SF whose mayor was forgiven for having an affair with the wife of an employee. The same mayor who pushes gay marriage and sanctuary city status for SF.
Any questions?
Glad to be the hell out of there and in Texas.

A Barnes and Noble employee asked me if I wanted to carry my purchase out without a bag “to save the environment”. When I chuckled at this she asked me indignantly what was so funny.
I replied “You’re selling me a pound of mixed paper and plastic with a paper receipt but not using a bag is saving the environment?”
No answer.

So, they think that someone like me – two college degrees, an IQ of 131 and a few other things here and there – is not “thinking people”, because I happen to be a Conservative?
To those booksellers who don’t want to carry Sarah’s book: Screw you! All of you and the Priuses you rode on! I just bought my copy of Sarah’s book on Amazon.com!
Again, booksellers: Screw you!

The uppity limousine libs in San Francisco like to think of themselves as frugal, green, impressively enlightened…when they are really none of these. it’s quite an affectation.
They are maintaining “appearances” with these teeny, just barely making a profit, bookstores, but ordering from Amazon and getting the big discount, don’tcha know?

Ya kin spin it, slant it, paint it and call it what you will.
It’s fear. This is the only way the wounded animal can lash out, cutting themselves as they do. Lost revenue. I’m likin’ it. Apparently they are unaware of online book sellers.
I understand…really I do. They are scared and have nothing that they believe in enough to fall back on. There is no substance to things the liberal believes in. All can be dismantled and destroyed in just a few hours of conversation, leaving them with only one conclusion. And no one wants to admit being wrong. That is why no liberal will debate with a knowledgeable Conservative on anything of substance. They get their intellectual asses handed to them every time. Hard to fight Truth with lies and distortion and win.

Alan,
Something about that explanation she gave you simply does not wash. Now, I don’t like to presume that I know what is in another person’s head, but what she told you makes no sense.
My guess would be that she now either knows that she made a mistake and attempted to rationalize it with you by framing it as a sensible business decision, or that she made a business decision based on some other factor which she felt no obligation to share with you.
No one in her position wants to come off as petty or vindictive, especially when conversing with someone she does not know. You called her out of the blue. For all she knew, you were a reporter searching for a follow-up story. Or, you could have been a potentially troublesome customer, fishing for grounds to make her life miserable by filing some complaint somewhere.
As for her explanation, booksellers know full well that they cannot make a sensible business decision based on what they would or would not make on ONE book. They are in the business of carrying thousands of titles, and one secret to success is correctly guessing how many of various books to carry. They have to compete with Amazon by somehow making customers believe that it is convenient for them to buy a title from them, even if it is a few bucks more than they would pay on line, or down the road.
But when a book is this hot, they should want to have it because, among other things, it brings people into the store. This is especially true as the holiday season starts heating up. Impulse buying occurs; and it occurs most frequently during the holiday season. That is a fact of retail business. So I don’t buy her explanation to you at all.
Perhaps one reason she did NOY carry it was that she feared it would alienate a key portion of her known customer base. She certainly knows that base better than you or I do. Let’s face it. San Francisco Bay area “progressives,” even ones who actually DO read, instead of just acquire books, rank way up there among the nastiest and most closed-minded people you can find anywhere in the United States.
So, if that was the case — that she heard or sensed bell-weather rumblings of hostility about the book from her customer base, and decided that discretion was the better part of valor, then it was indeed a business-based decision that she made.
But she would never, ever tell you that!

ProudPalinFan on November 21, 2009 at 4:28 PM
To which I’d want to ask said seller(s): might you be thinking of stocking it “under the counter”, out of sight but available for actual buyers?
Seems to me the way to handle this is to keep the book out of sight at all times, yet agree “reluctantly” to carry it “in the name of free speech” and so on, climbing onto the 1st Amendment and playing Dr. Principles. Might this be a way to accomplish both, or is this just idle fantasy?
All this Prohibition-related thema is enough to make one wonder if there are going to be any “book-easys”, or “read-easys” springing up soon in the Bay city. ;)

HAnthonyWayne on November 21, 2009 at 7:55 PM
Agree with you both.
“San Francisco book sellers” — I’m getting a sad laugh out of their suppression of option to their alleged “consumers”.
The area includes just about anything and everything from sleeping with animals and marrying your toes while worshipping Beezelbub, but they’re scared witless about Sarah Palin’s book and that it just might contain some family values and endearing sentiments.
I think that’s what they’re afraid of, that someone just might read Palin’s book and realize out of their San Francisco Bay Area Fog that Palin has written a readable and moving book.
Lourdes on November 22, 2009 at 3:41 PM
And, of course, Nancy Pelosi’s elected out of that area, so of course they’re scared as can be that someone might just READ Palin’s book. But never fear, lecture the kindergartners on placing objects in the lower intestines, no problem.
