Surprise: Many San Francisco booksellers refusing to carry Palin’s book; Update: Palin apologizes to those whose books weren’t signed
posted at 4:58 pm on November 20, 2009 by Allahpundit
Don’t jump to conclusions. It’s not that the retailers are closed-minded. It’s their customers who are closed-minded.
Well, okay. Some of the retailers are closed-minded too.
“Our customers are thinking people,” said Nathan Embretson, a bookseller at Pendragon Books in Oakland. “They’re not into reading drivel.”
There’s not a single copy on the shelf. Embretson said no one has asked for it except for one guy, who was kidding.
“He said he wanted to look at it but he also said he didn’t really want to read it,” Embretson said. “Anyway, he certainly didn’t want to buy it. I think he regarded looking at it as a kind of punishment.”…
Had she ordered 50 copies of the book, Cotleur said, she would probably wind up shipping 50 copies of the book back to the publisher in a couple of weeks.
“I would expect to take a bath on it,” she said. “The job of a book buyer is to be something of a psychic. You have to know your community. I don’t want to waste a lot of money and shelf space on a book nobody wants.’
Really? No one in the community’s interested in … a presidential campaign tell-all? I’m no fan of The One but I’ll bet David Plouffe’s book is a pretty gripping read. Your quote of the day from one of the lords of tolerance:
“Anything like that we wouldn’t carry,” said clerk Emily Stackhouse. “We’re a small store and it would probably gross us all out. Some things you carry because of freedom of speech, but a book like that is just gross.”
If I recall correctly, the “that’s gross” exception to free speech was articulated in the landmark case of Ohmigod v. Ewww. If you’re wondering what kind of books are carried in these shops, evidently because they don’t run afoul of the gross-out exception, Pajamas Media has got you covered.
While we’re on the subject of unhappiness about Palin’s book, here’s a clip shot outside the Indiana book signing after the event ended promptly at 9 p.m. — even though, allegedly, another 150 people were in line to have their copies autographed. Dave Weigel notes that you can hear people heckling her about “quitting on the job.” It may be that she and the HarperCollins people decided they simply had to get out of there promptly at nine to make the next stop on time; interestingly, Politico’s story about the signing makes no mention of any displeasure among the crowd, and Politico’s not known for spinning in Palin’s favor. Maybe there’s more to this than meets the eye? One last footnote: Someone on Twitter told me that 500 books were signed in Columbus today versus 1,000 that were slotted for the Indiana event. Could be they’re scaling back to a more manageable number in order to stay on schedule.
Update: A new Facebook note from Palin promises to make amends to the crowd in the vid:
I’ve been told that yesterday there were supporters in Noblesville who stood in long lines for hours in the cold and rain, and the book signing event ended without a chance to say hello to everyone who showed up. I am so sorry. We are working on a solution for those who were left behind.
I apologize.

not likely, though; that would still leave the entire state legislature…

Ha! I’ve been in Pendragon many times, although mostly in the ’80′s and ’90′s when I lived in Oakland. One of my memories of the place is the very attractive cashier who went from having long, beautiful auburn hair to having a shaved head overnight. Formerly nice to look at but the mind of a zombie. Another feminist “success,” ha, ha.
One of the defining characteristics of Bay Area liberals is their firm belief that they are gigantically smart and intellectual. In reality, closed-minded stupidity and repressed, rigid, dogmatic thinking are pandemic.

If anyone is interested… if you have read at least 100 pages into the book.
When Sarah talks about the food (veggies, fruit and milk) she isn’t lying. It is very true… I still remember eating gross iceburg lettuce and having to stir powdered milk up. Ugh.

You know, this doesn’t bother me at all. That’s just the way the screaming libs are in San Fran and only goes to show how pathetic they are… and that’s why I plan to never visit San Fran again. Never spend my money there again. Nor recommend going there to any of my friends. There are too many other great cities and places to visit in the United States and abroad. If you want to visit wine country or perhaps Yosemite and some of the other national parks in central and northern California, I do recommend the airport in Sacramento. It’s much easier to get into and out of.

dennis miller had this idea on his radio show for the past couple of weeks and no caller has yet been able to disprove it. he says he was told you only need to be in san francisco for two weeks to establish residency, so he wants a bunch of listeners to just move to SF for two weeks before the election, get residency, and vote Pelosi out. It could be a huge national campaign. What is he missing?

I live in SF.
I was in Costco yesterday and was looking through the books to see if they even carried. I didn’t see it and went about the rest of my shopping.
At the checkout I saw a guy who had purchased one. The checker saw the book and sneered, “We haven’t sold many of THESE!”
I was cheered when the customer snarked right back at him. “Maybe it you hadn’t hidden them, you’d sell more!”

I lived and worked in intolerant San Francisco for eight long years back in the 1980s. When I left I felt like I’d gotten out of jail. I’ve always said if they could get rid of the people, San Francisco would be one of the prettiest cities in the country. However, with the present population, it’s one of the ugliest. I do NOT miss it. I keep waiting for the big earthquake to break it off and float it over to China so everyone will FINALLY be happy in commune-land.

I remember the liberal attack to deny federal funds for a small air landing in a remote Alaskan town. They attacked Palin calling that a pork barrel project. @sshats just don’t appreciate the necessity of a small airstrip to secure the Alaskan survival, whether bringing food or medical provisions that IN TURN affects the security of our military and scientific outposts as well. But liberals lay out the pork for Murpha’s hideously unnecessary bells and whistles airport monstrosity.
maverick muse on November 20, 2009 at 5:45 PM
With Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Borders all selling the crap out of Palin’s book these book stores just look silly. They are just showing their pettiness and irrelevance. Anyone who wants this book can get it easily. It reminds me of those stupid people burning Harry Potter books. In this day and age both moves are just plain stupid and meaningless.
man… I’m moving to San Fran around the 1st of the year. I’m worried these liberal idiots are going to make me hate it there…
I’ve lived in a lot of liberal bastions. While there were a few annoying tools, for the most part I’ve enjoyed living there. I’m really worried San Fran will be over the top. I’m guessing it will be best if my wife keeps her Charles Krauthammer t-shirt in the closet…

Honestly, I’m not sure. I didn’t ask.
I felt like I was watching some sort of parody. The customer in front of me left and as he was checking me out the Costo employee started talking to another employee (a huge pet peeve of mine) about how much he loved the Colbert Report the other night making fun of teabaggers.
The guy looked like Monroe (if you guys remember that tv show.) and just epitomized the smarmy self righteous liberal mindset of SF.
To be fair though, I DID see a lot of Glenn Beck’s Arguing with Idiots on display and even bought my copy there with no fuss whatsoever. I was almost disappointed.
Sarjex on November 20, 2009 at 5:50 PM
ROFLMAO!!!
That’s a funny idea, but I have to ask. If you do that, there by voting in that area, do you relinquish your voting rights where you currently live? I’m not sure what the residency statute is in Texas, but I’d hate to lose out on my chances of voting in Texas, to go to SF, and vote there. Inevitably, some people are just obstinant. They don’t like the high taxes, but out of their so called principles, will continue to vote liberal, knowing what will eventually come. It’s their cross to bear, and I don’t feel sorry for that mentality.

The beautiful thing about Costco and the employees is that when they start acting like that. Tell them that those stocks in the Kirkland empire in Washington must be very good to them as they are the capilatists that let them have a job in California.
That annoys the heck out of them. And the fact that Washington/Kirkland was thinking about not dealing with Cali at all due to the business taxes there.

That’s what I thought when it arrived. My better half does a lot of amazon shopping, and I enjoy the surprises that arrive from UPS. The author explained things so well, even I could follow his thoughts. I was even put off by the table of contents, thinking I’d be at odds with the author’s premise. It was amazing to find that he explains my own conclusions regarding “God” (creative energy, consciousness, life and light) in his own scientific way with his own insight that I’d never known on my own.
But now I’m reading Palin’s thoughts for her choices, and finding more experiences she’s had that reinforce why I knew I liked her all along.

In 2002, I was thrown out of the City of Lights Bookstore in San Francisco for simply asking where I could find books by Sean Hannity and Ann Coulter on their shelves.
I first asked for a Sean Hannity book. At the time, the clerk did not know who he was, and had to look him up in Books in Print.
He told me they did not carry his books once he realized he was a conservative author. I then asked, “Okay. How about Ann Coulter? Where would I find her latest book?”
That one he knew!! He got “the look” on his face and informed me in no uncertain terms that they would NOT carry her books ever.
When I then asked, “Gee, whatever became of free speech?” the clerk became visibly irritated at me and demanded that I leave the store immediately.

A San Francisco resident “grossed out” over something? That’s a first.
I grew up in central California and have visited that pervopolis several times as a child (had a medical condition requiring regular visits to a doctor in the area). Even when I was a young skull full of mush, I received nothing but bad vibes from that city. I live elsewhere in the country now and I have since received several job offers from SF companies and have turned them all down. You can’t pay me enough to make me live in that city.

I spoke to the owner of PenDragon Books. This was after I called the store to complain and got into a not so nice back-and-forth with a clerk there. The owner, who seems like a very nice young woman and business owner, explained her position thoroughly. The fact is that they simply do not have the customer base to stock this book and not lose money. She explained that the store has been getting many calls and many folks were vitriolic in their tone and speech when they called and that the staff was reeling from this response. She stated that the clerk that made the comment that was mentioned in the SF Gate article was new on the job. She has written a letter to the editor and wants to set the record straight. We talked for over a half hour and she hasn’t had the opportunity to explain the events. This is a young businesswoman who made a business decision. Conservatives like myself should be all for this decision she made. We are supposed to be champions for Liberty and Freedom. We oppose the Government forcing us to buy health insurance or oppressive regulations strangling small businesses…right? Why should she bow to pressure and stock a book that she has to sell for $15 when WalMart sells it miles away for $9 when she knows her customers will not buy it and she’ll lose money? If blogs will post these type of posts, why not contact the owner and get her response like I did. It took all of minutes to get her on the phone and she gave me all the time I needed to explain this incident. We all like to to riled up about these type of incidents, but we should do our due diligence before we cast judgments and be “fair & balanced” in our approach.

So San Francisco bookstores don’t carry People Magazine, or Newsweek, or any of the other publications that are doing stories on Palin?
Way to celebrate diversity, freaky ‘Frisco.

New lefty tactic to deal with Sarah’s awesome book tour… Show up and act like an idiot… Obviously not Sarah fans. I’d bet they didn’t even have books with them, just slogans…

Governor Palin has style and class. Don’t be surprised if she offers left out line standers a one for one book swap.
In the face of adversity, she smiles.
