Do hacked e-mails show global-warming fraud?

posted at 8:48 am on November 20, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Controversy has exploded onto the Internet after a major global-warming advocacy center in the UK had its e-mail system hacked and the data published on line.  The director of the University of East Anglia Climate Research Unit confirmed that the e-mails are genuine — and Australian publication Investigate and the Australian Herald-Sun report that those e-mails expose a conspiracy to hide detrimental information from the public that argues against global warming (via Watt’s Up With That):

The internet is on fire this morning with confirmation computers at one of the world’s leading climate research centres were hacked, and the information released on the internet.

A 62 megabyte zip file, containing around 160 megabytes of emails, pdfs and other documents, has been confirmed as genuine by the head of the University of East Anglia’s Climate Research Unit, Dr Phil Jones.

In an exclusive interview with Investigate magazine’s TGIF Edition, Jones confirms his organization has been hacked, and the data flying all over the internet appears to have come from his organisation.

“It was a hacker. We were aware of this about three or four days ago that someone had hacked into our system and taken and copied loads of data files and emails.”

One of the most damning e-mails published comes from Dr. Jones himself.  In an e-mail from almost exactly ten years ago, Jones appears to discuss a method of overlaying data of temperature declines with repetitive, false data of higher temperatures:

Dear Ray, Mike and Malcolm,

Once Tim’s got a diagram here we’ll send that either later today or first thing tomorrow. I’ve just completed Mike’s Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (ie from 1981 onwards) amd [sic] from1961 for Keith’s to hide the decline. Mike’s series got the annual land and marine values while the other two got April-Sept for NH land N of 20N. The latter two are real for 1999, while the estimate for 1999 for NH combined is +0.44C wrt 61-90. The Global estimate for 1999 with data through Oct is +0.35C cf. 0.57 for 1998.

Thanks for the comments, Ray.

Cheers, Phil
Prof. Phil Jones
Climatic Research Unit

Jones told Investigate that he couldn’t remember the context of “hide the decline,” and that the process was a way to fill data gaps rather than mislead.  But when scientists talk about “tricks” in the context of hiding data, it certainly seems suspicious.

Andrew Bolt points to a couple of other suspicious entries in the database as well for the Herald-Sun.  For instance, here we have scientists discussing how to delete inconvenient data in order to emphasize other data that supports their conclusions:

Phil,
Here are some speculations on correcting SSTs to partly explain the 1940s warming blip. If you look at the attached plot you will see that theland also shows the 1940s blip (as I’m sure you know).
So, if we could reduce the ocean blip by, say, 0.15 degC, then this would be significant for the global mean – but we’d still have to explain the land blip. I’ve chosen 0.15 here deliberately. This still leaves an ocean blip, and i think one needs to have some form of ocean blip to explain the land blip (via either some common forcing, or ocean forcing land, or vice versa, or all of these). When you look at other blips, the land blips are 1.5 to 2 times (roughly) the ocean blips—higher sensitivity plus thermal inertia effects. My 0.15 adjustment leaves things consistent with this, so you can see where I am coming from.
Removing ENSO does not affect this.
It would be good to remove at least part of the 1940s blip, but we are still left with “why the blip”.
Let me go further. If you look at NH vs SH and the aerosol effect (qualitatively or with MAGICC) then with a reduced ocean blip we get continuous warming in the SH, and a cooling in the NH—just as one would expect with mainly NH aerosols.
The other interesting thing is (as Foukal et al. note – from MAGICC) that the 1910-40 warming cannot be solar. The Sun can get at most 10% of this with Wang et al solar, less with Foukal solar. So this may well be NADW, as Sarah and I noted in 1987 (and also Schlesinger later). A reduced SST blip in the 1940s makes the 1910-40 warming larger than the SH (which it currently is not)—but not really enough.
So … why was the SH so cold around 1910? Another SST problem? (SH/NH data also attached.)
This stuff is in a report I am writing for EPRI, so I’d appreciate any comments you (and Ben) might have.
Tom.

Hmmm. Sounds like “hid[ing] the data” once again.  And here we have them privately admitting that they can’t find the global warming that they’ve been predicting:

Hi all

Well I have my own article on where the heck is global warming ? We are asking that here in Boulder where we have broken records the past two days for the coldest days on record. We had 4 inches of snow. The high the last 2 days was below 30F and the normal is 69F, and it smashed the previous records for these days by 10F. The low was about 18F and also a record low, well below the previous record low.

This is January weather (see the Rockies baseball playoff game was canceled on saturday and then played last night in below freezing weather).

Trenberth, K. E., 2009: An imperative for climate change planning: tracking Earth’s global energy. Current Opinion in Environmental Sustainability, 1, 19-27, doi:10.1016/j.cosust.2009.06.001. [1][PDF] (A PDF of the published version can be obtained from the author.)
***

The fact is that we can’t account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is a travesty that we can’t. The CERES data published in the August BAMS 09 supplement on 2008 shows there should be even more warming: but the data are surely wrong. Our observing system is inadequate.***

Do scientists use data to test theories, or do they use theories to test data? Scientists will claim the former, but here we have scientists who cling to the theory so tightly that they reject the data.  That’s not science; it’s religious belief.

Dr. Jones has confirmed that these e-mails are genuine.  Whether the work represented by these scientists is as genuine seems to be under serious question.  Tim Blair says, “The fun is officially underway.”

Update: These e-mails may explain this:

Global warming appears to have stalled. Climatologists are puzzled as to why average global temperatures have stopped rising over the last 10 years. Some attribute the trend to a lack of sunspots, while others explain it through ocean currents.

At least the weather in Copenhagen is likely to be cooperating. The Danish Meteorological Institute predicts that temperatures in December, when the city will host the United Nations Climate Change Conference, will be one degree above the long-term average.

Otherwise, however, not much is happening with global warming at the moment. The Earth’s average temperatures have stopped climbing since the beginning of the millennium, and it even looks as though global warming could come to a standstill this year.

Or maybe it didn’t exist at all, except when scientists at Hadley were “hid[ing] the decline[s].”

Update II: This follows on a more mundane controversy over competence at Hadley that erupted in September:

A scientific scandal is casting a shadow over a number of recent peer-reviewed climate papers.

At least eight papers purporting to reconstruct the historical temperature record times may need to be revisited, with significant implications for contemporary climate studies, the basis of the IPCC’s assessments. A number of these involve senior climatologists at the British climate research centre CRU at the University East Anglia. In every case, peer review failed to pick up the errors.

As for global warming “stalled”, explain again how the last decade was the warmest on record?
Hal_10000 on November 20, 2009 at 10:04 AM

The reason that AGW advocates can say that with a straight face is that “the record” only goes back to the 1850′s and we have been recovering from the Little Ice Age since then. That “on record” evasion allows them to ignore the LIA, the Medieval Warm Period and the Holocene Optimum. The whole Hockey Stick Scam was an attempt to cleanse the record of the LIA and the MWP. The HS was bad science.

Global Warming has not stalled. Global temps have fallen. The 90s was the end of a warming trend, ergo it was the warmest.

March 10, 2009 (LPAC)–Vaclav Klaus, President of the Czech Republic, giving a keynote address to a conference of scientists and others who reject the lies of the British Empire’s green fascists, accused the European Union governments of being global warming “alarmists,” while hiding their actual intentions. “They probably do not want to reveal their true plans and ambitions–to stop economic development and return mankind several centuries back,” said Klaus.

The three-day conference in New York City is the second annual event sponsored by The Heartland Institute. The speakers include Lord Christopher Monckton, who prepared the “Global Warming Swindle” video tape, MIT meteorologist Richard Lindzen, and Fred Singer, an atmospheric physicist. Dr. Lindzen said that “the process of coopting science on behalf of a political movement has had an extraordinarily corrupting influence on science–especially since the issue has been a major motivation for funding. Most funding for climate would not be there without this issue. And, it should be added, most science funded under the rubric of climate does not actually deal with climate, but rather with the alleged impact of arbitrarily assumed climate change.

“It has been noted that the climate in models is an example of unintelligent design–something modelers are far more capable of than is nature.”

Like Klaus, Lindzen pointed to the evil political intentions: “Once it is understood, the silliness of the whole issue becomes evident–though those who are committed to warming alarm as the vehicle for a postmodern coup d’etat will obviously try to obfuscate matters.”

Russian and Chinese space programs have openly admitted that it was a hoax and that there is no way for a human being to survive going thru the tens of thousands of miles of NUCLEAR RADIATION that is the van allen belts, especially with those specifications that the Americans supposedly went through it with.

You would have to build a vessel so thick with solid lead that it would not even be able to take off(especially considering that the existing rockets were already 40 stories high and incredibly heavy to begin with).

The profit from a scam of billions of dollars is completely eaten up by the number of people you had to buy off to pull off the hoax. Thousands of people at NASA, Congress, Presidents, foreign governments. And after all these years, not one person with a conscience came forward? It’d be a trillion dollar buy off, at least. It’d be more profitable to, you know, actually go to the moon.

You should read the rest of the thread. It’s a gem, and includes a great takedown of Fins by unclemrgol.

That’s what being owned looks like.

Hey my mom sent me that polar bear photo in an email today what’s up with that….we think it’s funny.

It’d be more profitable to, you know, actually go to the moon.

lorien1973 on November 20, 2009 at 12:21 PM

Afraid I have to call you out on this one. If there were any profit in going to the moon, private companies would have been all over it like flies on roadkill after the government had finished the chest-pounding contest with Russia.

While I do believe the moon landings happened, there was NO direct profit derived from the space race. The sole goal was to match and ultimately beat the Soviets’ headstart so we weren’t someday being threatened with nukes from outer space, which we did.

Facts? You mean facts pulled out of the asses of cultural vandals? Those aren’t facts. They got a conclusion and then ‘create’ facts to prove their conclusion. They are no different than 9/11 Truthers and Global Warmists merely on your side.

You made statements, such as the Van Allen Belts were too radioactive for Transit. Dr. Van Allen who discovered those Belts disprove that notion. Moreover, pleny of unmanned space probes that do not have their electronics heavily shielded survive Transit of the Van Allen belts just fine and Radiation plays havoc with sensitive electronics, they play havoc with communications.

Holger on November 20, 2009 at 12:28 PM

Dark-Star on November 20, 2009 at 12:25 PM

Actually, there was a ton of profit from the space race. Have you seen the list of products that came from NASA during that time – as a result of research and problem solving? It’s simply astounding.

The reason that the moon hasn’t been exploited yet is governments around the world reserve the right of exploration for themselves. Private companies are simply not allowed to do anything beyond the upper atmosphere.

lorien1973 on November 20, 2009 at 12:29 PM

Considering that the moon landing has been definitvely proven to be a hoax by Russian and Chinese scientists…what does that make you for still believing it?

MaximusConfessor on November 20, 2009 at 12:04 PM

Man, you do love playing the idiot, don’t you.

The radiation levels in the Van Allen belt are way to low. You would have to spend months in the belt, continuously in order to get enough radiation to kill someone. And that’s assuming you have no protection, not even a space suit.

The main reason I agreed to call myself “theGreat” is because I love watching how such a moniker causes the heads of idiots to explode. As you have so ambly demonstrated.

MarkTheGreat on November 20, 2009 at 12:32 PM

YOu wouldn’t know a fact if it walked up on the street and said hello.

MarkTheGreat on November 20, 2009 at 12:33 PM

And Russians, who would have loved busting the USA on a fake moon landing confirmed the moon landing happened. Were they in on the hoax, even though there was a cold war and it would have served their interests to prove the US wrong?

lorien1973 on November 20, 2009 at 12:12 PM

And the tens of thousands of people who worked on the Apollo program were also in on the hoax, and have for some reason kept their silence, even though most of them were fired shortly after the Apollo program ended.

MarkTheGreat on November 20, 2009 at 12:35 PM

Even Dr. VanAllen, the guy who discovered the VanAllen radiation belt has declared the notion that travelling through it would be fatal to be nothing but bunk.

MarkTheGreat on November 20, 2009 at 12:36 PM

MaximusConfessor on November 20, 2009 at 12:21 PM

MarkTheGreat on November 20, 2009 at 12:40 PM

StOlaf, I started watching the first video, but the first claim was so utterly ridiculous, and had been dealth with in fullnes so many years ago that I saw no reason to continue.

Your standards of proof are quite low, especially when it’s something you want to believe anyway.

The reason why the TV pictures were low resolution, had to do with data transmission rates. The LEM had a small antenna and it’s transmitter was low power. (It was operating on a battery. Do you think they took a backup generator with them or something?)

Because of the low transmission rates, the signal was not compatible with standard TV signals.

You honestly believe that because the astronauts had with them high quality color film cameras, this proves they could have transmitted high quality color images directly to earth?

Man, you are gullible.

MarkTheGreat on November 20, 2009 at 12:47 PM

Are YOU serious Lorien?

The whole world knows this was a scam except for Americans.

There are numerous documentaries aired in various countries and Russian and Chinese scientists have come forward saying there is no way that it was possible.

You do know that the operation was segmented into various groups right?

Only a few guys at the top and the astronauts themselves were aware of what was going on.

Also I’m sue you know(because of the many news stories in recent years),that most of NASA’s astronauts are total nutcases who have no grasp on reality right?

You think it’s a coincidence that so many astronauts over the recent years have suffered pychotic meltdowns(like the diaper lady etc.)and have been exposed as total crazies?

The fact is NO ONE has gone through the van allen belts.

ALL of the space stations and satellites are in low orbit WAY below the van allen belt.

You can do the research and find this out yourself.

In fact satellites which have run astray too close to the van allen belt have actually been destroyed because they came to close to this radiation.

MaximusConfessor on November 20, 2009 at 12:49 PM

Wait a minute, isn’t that polar bear illustration proof positive for global warming?

lorien1973 on November 20, 2009 at 12:29 PM

I’ve seen the list, and everything in it either existed or was already been developed for more earth bound uses.

The absolute best that can be said of NASA, is that the billions spent on it, accelerated the development of a few technologies by a few months to a few years.

Sigh, such language. Does your Mom know you use that word?

Del Dolemonte on November 20, 2009 at 1:00 PM

The whole world knows this was a scam except for Americans.

Of crazy people, perhaps. I think the “Americans” thing is what does it for me. There would be no “moon landing conspiracy” if Soviet Russia landed on the moon. Ask yourself why. And then you can wonder why you are able to buy into it so easily.

Only a few guys at the top and the astronauts themselves were aware of what was going on.

And maybe the people, you know, filming the astronauts. Um, building the sets, etc. They might have a little bit of a clue, themselves.

And maybe the Russians too. Who, you know, monitored the moon landing. They might think something as up, themselves – when, you know, no one landed on the moon when NASA claimed. Just a little red flag there. But they kept quiet. For some reason. Maybe you can explain that.

Also I’m sue you know(because of the many news stories in recent years),that most of NASA’s astronauts are total nutcases who have no grasp on reality right?

Most! Nutcases!

The fact is NO ONE has gone through the van allen belts.

Except for, like, the people who landed on the moon. 7 different groups of people.

ALL of the space stations and satellites are in low orbit WAY below the van allen belt.

Except for the ones that aren’t.

In fact satellites which have run astray too close to the van allen belt have actually been destroyed because they came to close to this radiation.

Yep. There are no polar satellites. Nothing has ever escaped Earth orbit ever – which means they’d have to pass thru the belts, um, multiple times.

Moon landing stupidity is on par with 9/11 stupidity. Only less malignant and more comical.

lorien1973 on November 20, 2009 at 1:00 PM

The whole world knows this was a scam except for Americans

.

A claim that is as usual, not backed up by any facts. I’ve seen polls on this subject and world wide, only a few morons believe the moon landings were faked.

You do know that the operation was segmented into various groups right?

Even if true, each member of each of the cells would still know that the over all operation was faked. Why has not a single one of them come forward?

Only a few guys at the top and the astronauts themselves were aware of what was going on.

So everyone at the launch facility was duped by the realistic robots climbing into the launch vehicles?

Also I’m sue you know(because of the many news stories in recent years),that most of NASA’s astronauts are total nutcases who have no grasp on reality right?

You think it’s a coincidence that so many astronauts over the recent years have suffered pychotic meltdowns(like the diaper lady etc.)and have been exposed as total crazies?

As usual, you find a thin reed and build a world wide conspiracy on it. There was one astronaut who went bonkers. Out of hundreds. Are you claiming that the entire shuttle program is also faked? You are aware that the shuttle can’t even reach the VanAllen?

The fact is NO ONE has gone through the van allen belts.

The fact is that several dozen have, and most of them are still alive today.

ALL of the space stations and satellites are in low orbit WAY below the van allen belt.

1) You are aware that geosynchronous orbit is way above the VanAllen, aren’t you? Are you aware that there are hundreds of satellites in geosynchronous orbit? As mentioned before, most satellites are in low earth orbit for economic reasons. There is no reason to pay to launch them higher.

You can do the research and find this out yourself.

Coming from you, that’s funny. Given the many easily disproven claims that you have made in this post alone, it’s quite obvious that you have never done any research.

In fact satellites which have run astray too close to the van allen belt have actually been destroyed because they came to close to this radiation.

I give you a challenge, list the satellites that have been destroyed by the VanAllen belt.

Silly me, what was I thinking citing facts and video clips from their so called expeditions?

MaximusConfessor on November 20, 2009 at 1:02 PM

MaximusConfessor on November 20, 2009 at 12:52 PM

MaximusConfessor on November 20, 2009 at 12:52 PM

You are talking about hundreds and thousands of REMs there butch. A few hundred REMs can kill you, several thousand will fry your brain in an instant. The Van Allen Belt is not that radioactive not by a long shot.

There are nuclear sites here in America that are more radioactive.
