CNN poll: Blame for economy shifting to Democrats
posted at 10:55 am on November 20, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Ten months to the day after Barack Obama took office and three years since Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress, the American public has begun to get the impression that Democrats are responsible for the economic mess that continues to unfold. A new CNN poll shows that those blaming Republicans has dropped fifteen points in the last six months, while those blaming Democrats have risen 21 points in the same period (via Yid with Lid):
Nearly two years into the recession, opinion about which political party is responsible for the severe economic downturn is shifting, according to a new national poll.
A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Friday morning indicates that 38 percent of the public blames Republicans for the country’s current economic problems. That’s down 15 points from May, when 53 percent blamed the GOP. According to the poll 27 percent now blame the Democrats for the recession, up 6 points from May. Twenty-seven percent now say both parties are responsible for the economic mess.
“The bad news for the Democrats is that the number of Americans who hold the GOP exclusively responsible for the recession has been steadily falling by about two to three points per month,” says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. “At that rate, only a handful of voters will blame the economy on the Republicans by the time next year’s midterm elections roll around.”
There may be even more reason to worry in this poll. Obama has tried to sell the idea that the economy is improving, bolstered by a third-quarter GDP number mainly driven by temporary government incentives — Cash for Clunkers and a homebuyer tax credit. Tim Geithner told Congress that “by any measure” the economy is improving, despite the one big measure of unemployment rising faster than any time in the last six months. The poll shows that responders claiming that the economy is getting worse rose three points since August, suggesting that Obama’s credibility is waning:
“Some economic indicators may suggest that the economy has turned the corner – but try telling that to the American people,” adds Holland. The number of Americans who say that the economy is in good shape – a number that grew steadily through the spring and summer – has now stalled, with fewer than one in five expressing a positive view of current conditions. More than eight in 10 say that economic conditions are in poor shape, with 43 percent calling them very poor.
CNN did not include sample data in this partial release from their poll, so the partisan split of the sample cannot be determined. Interestingly, they didn’t produce any subsample data on independents. The big story amongst pollsters is the flight of independents, which makes CNN’s survey or reporting decision a little mysterious.
The evolving polling on this shows the big danger for Democrats as they push big-spending agenda items through Congress. They could do that as long as they didn’t have to worry about getting blamed for a stalled economy. The undiminished upward trajectory in unemployment has made that impossible. Democrats got what they wanted in the $787 billion Porkulus plan after shutting Republicans out of the picture, and they now own the results.
If unemployment continues to rise, and if the administration continues to offer fraudulent numbers from its Porkulus project, Democrats will completely own this recession and the unemployment it causes by the time the midterms arrive.

Based on past experience, my guess as to the reason they didn’t show the sample data is that it is badly skewed in favor of the Democrats…and it is still disastrous news for the Dems even with a ridiculous skew.

Pay the piper.

Unfortuantely for Americans, history shows that unemployment keeps rising for one year after the resumption of GDP growth. Now the question was the 3rd qtr a blip? I hope not, but I think so.

I remain convinced that the stimulus plan, absolutely bullied through by OBAMA, was his downfall. He just didn’t see it coming.
He insisted on high-flying speeches about infrastructure, yadda. Reality? It saved teacher’s jobs. Frankly, people didn’t mind that entirely. Just be honest.
He insisted on the speed, like it was going to really make a difference how fast it went out. No, the pipeline is the pipeline. It’s slow and dribbles. Speed was not about speeding money to the economy. It was about avoiding debate as to who would benefit.
He lied about accountability. As usual, they are getting absolutely nailed by the reality of where the money went. Story after story is just NOW hitting the airways. It’s gonna be nasty.
And, he blew his other agenda items that people would have probably felt helped them more. HCR has been a nightmare due to the deficit.
He drove the deficit up without good reason. People ALSO blame the GOP, too, though.
Nobody has forgotten that Bush forgot to fund the wars.

So, this isn’t Bush’s economy anymore? Wow, how ’bout that.
At least the Dems have all of those billions of tax increases, minimum wage bumps, new federal regulations and mandates, and tons debt to get this economy running again!
JoeinTX on November 20, 2009 at 11:03 AM
It took almost 7 years before anyone noticed that FDR really wasn’t doing squat about reviving the economy (and another 65 years before anyone acknowledged that he hindered the recovery)… he was “saved” by the war, of course.
The Dems still aren’t being blamed for the housing bubble. We may have top wait 70 years before some brave historian steps out of academia to make that argument… if the nation is still here in 70 years.

I vividly recall one of the early scenes from the movie “Serentiy”:
The main villian is talking to the head scientist about the escape of their top psychic child. “In some societies when someone has failed as badly as you, they would throw themselves upon their sword.”
While that process would be a lot less messy for the rest of this country, that also would require Congress and this Administration taking responsibility. That’s hard to do when all they say is “BusHitlerCheneyRePalinTerRightist Bad!”
Eh…but what is one to do? I live in the South so I’ll just sit back and watch the thieves begin to feast on themselves…

This is why it is a GOOD strategy for the Republicans to lie low and not “produce a leader” right now. It also demonstrates clearly why the White House has so desperately tried to create a Republican Party “leader” that it can continue to blame for the mess.

Watching Geithner trying to blame Bush yesterday, I think, was really eye-opening for a lot of people. He was the very picture of gross incompetence coupled with a level of maturity barely breaking past adolescence. It was like watching a teenager blame his math teacher for the E on his test. And the first thing anyone had to think while watching it was, “Geez, this is like watching Obama. These people are not adults.”

I think people totally get the entire picture. Bush was, in large part, fiscally irresponsible. But there comes a time when the elected guy needs to show that his solutions are working.

But, further in debt. And that just doesn’t make sense to people.

New Agency Proposed to Oversee Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae
Published: Thursday, September 11, 2003
The Bush administration today recommended the most significant regulatory overhaul in the housing finance industry since the savings and loan crisis a decade ago…
Among the groups denouncing the proposal today were the National Association of Home Builders and Congressional Democrats who fear that tighter regulation of the companies could sharply reduce their commitment to financing low-income and affordable housing.
”These two entities — Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac — are not facing any kind of financial crisis,” said Representative Barney Frank of Massachusetts, the ranking Democrat on the Financial Services Committee. ”The more people exaggerate these problems, the more pressure there is on these companies, the less we will see in terms of affordable housing.”

It should be NO problem for this populist movement to change the tenor of Congress in the next election. It’s a freaking gift, frankly.

I think Reagan did that do get his Defense spending and number one priority accomplished, the defeat of the USSR. If Reagan had teh congress Bush had, he would have achieve more of his stated limited government goals.
Bush, though, his support of NCLB pre-9/11 tells me that he was not interested in limited government. I do not think he would have reined in the GOP congress even without 9/11 reshaping his Presidency.

Every nation and locale dominated by Democrats is always highest in crime, highest in poverty, lowest in productivity and failing. Representatives from those nations/locales are always the loudest in demanding more from everyone else, yet despite continued responses, they continue to fail.
The obvious lesson on a human behavioral level is that productivity is not increased by another source taking care of liabilities for the unproductive. Democrats refute the notion of this simple, proven, behavioral pattern. So their politics are not “helping the poor,” they are, indeed, creating poverty and blocking the needy from self-development and increased productivity.
Capitalism is a system by which every individual can develope their dreams and support themselves and not expect others to do that for them. Socialism suppresses all of that individual opportunity. Democrats are Socialists.

John the Libertarian on November 20, 2009 at 11:30 AM
…which is also why those nations/locales eventually fall victim to dictators. Castro, Chavez, Nation of Islam, Mao, “Communist Committee,” etc., all of these are opportunistic infections on civilizations that slip in when too many individuals have long since stopped being productive and have taken to the “I can’t” or “who cares” state of mind. (Which reflects a degeneration of personal responsibility in the majority of a population.)

I gotta say this. The Dems “party of no” charges against the GOP don’t seem to be sticking- what with the rampant failure of everything the Dems have done.

At the time, Collins said: “We’re facing a crisis and it makes no sense to have a partisan divide on the most important issue facing our country … on balance it is a good bill, it’s needed and I think it will make a difference.” Well, it has made a difference for the worse and the people of Maine need to hold Collins responsible for her failure.

One thing to keep in mind is the public mood.
We’re into the holiday season. People are looking at their job situations, bank account balances, mortgage balances and – after saying “it’s got to get better” last year, will they repeat it this year? Dunno.
Look at the early Great Depression – people thought recovery was just around the corner, that we’d be back in the roaring twenties economy in no time. Not so much, as it turned out.
Is history repeating? If so, and if enough people are starting to think “maybe we should curtail the gift buying”, this could be a very bleak season for retailers.
And as a frequent poster on another board has pointed out, the retail mortgage situation is, if anything, even more dire than the retail one.

It is not just that the “stimulus hasn’t worked,” but is a whole package, including: The Friday night urgency for voting on this fraudulent bill was a lie, as demonstrated by Pelosi taking off the next day for her vacation in Italy, followed by the supposedly urgent bill sitting on Obama’s desk for days until he could get a good photo op for its signing; the Obama lie about “shovel ready jobs”; and now the obvious government lie about “jobs created or saved.” Americans gave these crooks the benefit of the doubt, and the crooks took Americans, including future generations of Americans, to the cleaners in return. We need to throw these bums out in November 2010.
GaltBlvnAtty on November 20, 2009 at 11:45 AM
No, Liberalism by way of the Far Left Democrats in CA has only had it’s majority there for the past few decades (began growing in operations in the ’70′s, became majority after first CA state depression in the 80′s and then ruined the one large CA state budget surplus in the 90′s).
Take a look at the state of CA today: failed.
All those burgeoned, social programs — entire system that was forced upon the state in only the last two/three decades — failed and failing.
What happened with the machine that drives any economy — private industry, private property owners, the source of most tax revenue and employment — began departing CA by the 80′s due to one thing: ever increasing taxes and regulations, which is routinely what Democrats demand (and why their politics are failed in theory, as I just explained here, earlier)…
So the “Liberalism” drove out over decades the money-makers and the tax payers and the state’s tipped toward a majority of takers. The state’s in awful shape today. And of course, the demands by the failed-notion Left in CA is to now demand “more” from the federal government, having tapped out and abused individual worth in the state.
The state of CA’s public worker unions is ALSO, interesting enough, one of the major financial donors to the DNC. THUS, you’ve had a hatchery taking place in the state of CA for this recent decades-long period of Democrat-domination of the state, all for purposes of enticing those who are dependent on government to then service more government for a political party.
It’s a downward spiral and getting worse. It’s also proof that Socialist Democrats prove over and over again that their ideas run counter to human survival.
Lourdes on November 20, 2009 at 11:45 AM

Not all Dems are stupid, either in the fiscally-responsible way or in the desiring-re-election way.
The 0bama gambit of rushing everything through Right Now Because It’s An Emergency has gone just about as far as it can. The challenge for fiscal conservatives is twofold – first, tolerate (and educate) the social conservatives so we’re all on the same page, and second force the Dems to allow rollbacks of these high-cost programs.
This will not be easy.

Frankly, they just spread it around incrementally over the HRC. Did you see the figures spent? Shoot, we could offer a hospitalization plan at a reduced price for all the dough they put into this.
I still don’t think that bought votes, per se. But then, I’m not one to think that “follow the money” is always the path to the truth of the matter.
But your point is good. Some senior people are corrupt. No question. Some aren’t.
My point is that “purging” can result in some unintended consequences. That’s all.

If we replace them all tommorrow they are all taken care of for life. They’ve seen to that. To hell with the rest of us.
The rebellion is at hand.

Visible examples of the denigration of the very infrastructure and overall quality of life of Socialism…in CA alone…single family property owners began leaving the state in high numbers in the 80′s. The neighborhoods they left — nice, well kept single family homes — increasingly began being populated with multi-tenant populations in every structure and then the slide was set: requirements for more social services overall (law enforcement, everything) with noticable loss of tax revenue.
End result, places built fresh, new, nice, over a mere decade became crime-addled, gangland afflicted ghettos or borderline ghettos: parts of San Fernando Valley, Palmdale, Garden Grove and Santa Ana, and many more…even Hemit and Riverside County, once exceptionally peaceful, well behaved rural areas, afflicted with some of the most violent crime ever witnessed anywhere and a great deal of newly-planted poverty.
= Failure of Socialism.

Clinton was never a Fiscal Conservative. He was, however, fiscally conservative AFTER he had one buttock handed to him over “HillaryCare,” the other handed to him in ’94, and with Dick Morris showing him polls that said he would be liked and re-elected if he just acted more the centrist. Clinton was then, is now, and forever will be a windsock.
And as far as “fish” congresscritters go, they at least have the ability to be clean. Senior congresscritters are already soiled and have no problem wallowing in the mud.

Conservative politicians should beat this drum. Do you want to see what unchecked liberalism has in store for you, see CA. How can liberal say that the 8th biggest economy of the world was not enough to prove their ideas?
