Quotes of the day

posted at 10:30 pm on November 19, 2009 by Allahpundit

“Y’all well know that I really don’t like Sarah Palin. In fact, more than one of you has yelled at me about this. And I find the whole schtick about how the media is just a bunch of elitist hooligans who are out to get her really grating.

“That’s why I really wish the media wouldn’t act like, well, a bunch of elitist hooligans who are out to get her. I’ve coined a new phrase to cover the situation: Palinoia. It’s when you think people are out to get you, and then they do their best to justify your erroneous belief.”

***
“[A]s the populist governor of a state whose voters respond to plainspoken directness, she suddenly found herself a national figure addressing big-media sophisticates. She was given about seven seconds to learn her role and then, after eight seconds, patronized and mocked. The reasons she performed so poorly are the very reasons her fan base loves her. If, over the next three years, her performance improves as much as it appears to have in just the last year, the conventional rap about her rustic idiocy may come off as mean-spirited and archaic. Her foes might be wise to contemplate the notion that someone of Palin’s background and sensibilities has a right, regardless of her views, to participate in the national debate merely because she speaks (though often unclearly) for many like her. If this possibility can’t be countenanced, then government for the people by the people is an abstract idea we’ve grown too cynical to practice. Sarah Palin endures not because she’s brilliant, smooth or philosophically correct, but because hope in democracy endures, too.”

***
“Sarah Palin’s got to stop blaming the media soon. It’s like Obama blaming George W. Bush for everything. It works for a while and then it gets old.”

“Sarah Palin’s got to stop blaming the media soon. It’s like Obama blaming George W. Bush for everything. It works for a while and then it gets old.”

I think she’s entailed and from the interviews I’ve seen she’s not blaming so much as giving the whole truth of how things unfolded. I’m rather sure were she a declared candidate Sarah Palin would not whine about the media. Though I thihk it only helps her and us to remind the American people that there is a biased filter when it comes to the lamestream media.

“Sarah Palin’s got to stop blaming the media soon. It’s like Obama blaming George W. Bush for everything. It works for a while and then it gets old.”

George W. Bush wasn’t/isn’t hell bent to destroy Obama personally and politically. I see where she’s coming from, but it’s not a great analogy.

Missy on November 19, 2009 at 10:38 PM

The other Salon link that @allahpundit tweeted is well worth reading as well. Basically a two-thumbs-up book review.

To summarize: “Palin is Alaska.” Alaska is weird, folksy, likes hunting, and speaks in vernacular that some of the rest of us find grating. But its who she is.

jimmy the notable on November 19, 2009 at 10:41 PM

11 AP journalists fact check her book. Nah… the AP does that all the time, it’s routine don’t cha’ know? I’m still waiting for CNN to fact check some of Palin’s SNL skits since they are so fair and balanced.

Hog Wild on November 19, 2009 at 10:41 PM

Mark Steyn said when he saw Sarah he was surrounded by moms with strollers. Today in Indiana, same thing. This has potential for grass roots support that bo can’t buy.
Remember her dad said she was reloading!

tim c on November 19, 2009 at 10:41 PM

I’ve been watching her interviews on Fox, and for all the media types complaining how Palin is blaming the media I don’t see it. She points out that the national media is a hostile environment for her (factual), and she didn’t have the experience to handle that environment.

Which is why us ordinary folk understand that she is sincere and one of us.

Bill O’Reilly’s question “are you qualified ” really grates on me because the constitution was written so us ordinary folk could be President if we can persuade enough voters to support our ideas. Harry Truman sold hats, for pete’s sake, and Sam Walton started as a retail clerk in a JC Penny store.

In this country it isn’t were you start from that counts, it’s what you do with the talents God has given you, and the opportunities that are available to you, that counts.

Newsbusters has a post on GQ magazine with a big Obama face (a BIG Obama face) on it’s cover proclaiming him “Super Dude of the year” or some nonsense and the article bashes Sarah Palin as some cretin. Very confusing to me that a magazine would do that that I just know caters to the average heterosexual male and has such a robust subscription base that they don’t even have to think about stimulus Obama-money.

The Newsweek cover was a sexist embarrassment. Hell, they wouldn’t have highlighted an article about Hillary Clinton with that stupid nutcracker, yet there’s apparently a photo of “Sarah Palin doll as slutty schoolgirl”. This is enormously disrespectful to someone who, like it or not, was a vice presidential candidate, and deserves to be treated the same way that her predecessors were. If you wouldn’t put a photo of Joe Biden in his running shorts on the cover, you should damn well extend the same courtesy to Palin, however much you dislike her.

Except even Helen Keller would have seen through the puke inspiring, Obama worship last year. That doesn’t say much for the Dancing with the Stars crowd who elected Obama, but how many people will admit to it by 2012?It does sound whiny, but the more Obama screws up, the more people will buy into “Sarah got screwed.”

d1carter on November 19, 2009 at 10:49 PM

I caught the BOR interview tonight, and I think she did fine. They seemed to get a lot of campaign stuff out of the way tonight, and my understanding is that tomorrrow night, the O’Reilly interview will focus more on the issues at hand.

That’s the one I think we all want to take careful note of. Don’t get me wrong, I like Sarah Palin VERY much, but I also know I have to understand where she sits on matters of foreign and domestic policies.

So I think tomorrow night’s interview will be a little more meaty. I myself would like to see us get past the horrible treatment she got at the hands of the media and blow them off while we address the more serious issues.

They would all be in fetal positions rocking back in forth crying for their binkies if they had ever been exposed to the crap that she and her family has put up with. So this is her turn. The political class can just STFU!

JAM on November 19, 2009 at 10:52 PM

Sarah Palin’s got to stop blaming the media soon. It’s like Obama blaming George W. Bush for everything. It works for a while and then it gets old.”

Every interview I’ve seen she has taken responsibility for her actions and she has been consistant in answering questions. I give her credit for that as not many politicians are as open and gracious when confronted. However, it is gettng old that every interview asks her the same questions, as if there is nothing else to ask her.
I would not put her in the same class as Obama blaming Bush at every turn, his is a complete knee jerk reaction to blame everyone but himself, it would be refreshing if he manned up to some of his mistakes.

Palin isn’t whining about the press.
She’s doing what Bush and others should have done. She’s settin the record straight over and over until the truth is set up and she can start from there.

It’s something our side doesn’t do enough…

That’s also why the press is trying to crush her because she’s not playing the game by letting the left’s talking points stick and untimately wrongly define the candidate.

Erroneous belief! You think Sarah’s belief that the media was out to get her was erroneous? Megan thinks that Sarah thinks the media was out to get her before it was? Or that Sarah thinking it made it come true? Or what? Reading the whole article I find she may have slipped this knot she tied herself in to start off with. donh525 on November 19, 2009 at 11:29 PM

The questions will stop soon. She’s doing it right this time, which is exposing enough of the media to the same material. They won’t want to keep asking the same questions.

It’ll be old. Then, she’ll be able to say, “Oh well, water under the bridge” and not be accused of dodging the question.

Right now? If she doesn’t respond to the issues, then she’ll be accused of avoiding the question. There is no doubt that the media pounded her unfairly. There is no doubt that needs to be addressed.

And to make it as though this is HER fault and that she’s whining is really the ultimate in victimizing someone. Hey, you like getting beaten? No? You whiner, you!

Ridiculous.

She seems a whole lot more straightforward than the rest of the nuanced chattering political class.

There are very few politicians who are actually good at communications. The very role of a politician is to cloak answers in language that is deliberately vague so that the listener believes that there is agreement and understanding.

Obviously, clarity is NOT a trait, then, that would serve them well.

See, O’Reilly’s style is just to ask questions as though he’s amazed by the other person’s opinion.

He does it to everyone. The one thing I didn’t agree with him was when he said that Gibson isn’t the “kind of guy” who would try to trip her with the Bush Doctrine question.

Who is he kidding? Gibson most definitely was hitting her with a gotcha question. That’s why he wouldn’t clarify what he was asking, of course.

Sarah can and will get better. She’ll learn to say, “Many people have a different definition of that, Charlie. What are you talking about?”

I suspect some of us will be a little sorry when she becomes that polished.

AnninCA on November 19, 2009 at 11:37 PM

Excellent first night with O’Reilly! Good questions, excellent answers. Very comfortable in her own skin and it really came across tonight. This is the kind of interview I hoped we would see. I hope the rest of it the next two nights goes just as well.

One other point. The self-deprecating “my bad” stuff is exactly what she’s got to do to get the campaign far into her past. “Yep, I screwed up, but I’m going to respond to unfair criticism from whomever it comes from, the other side or my own, in public or leaked, then move on to better and brighter things.” Respond and get it over with. Also excellent that she made it clear that she has nothing but good things to say about Senator McCain. They have now made their positions clear. Senator McCain had to give a pretty non-committal statement of support for his people while trying to avoid conflict with her and she’s doing the same. I’d hate to be Schmidt et al in the next presidential election cycle. They’ll only be able to work for Democrats ’cause even though they’ll be out to beat her, none of her likely opponents is going to want to tick off the base by hiring McCain’s incredibly ungracious staff.

… because she speaks (though often unclearly)

Does that statement bother anyone else?

AZfederalist on November 19, 2009 at 11:26 PM

I’m with you. She is infinitely more eloquent than Obama, Biden or Hillary (actually, of the three, I think Biden is the most eloquent speaker, which is pretty sad).

When I was in college, I was a member of Toastmasters International, a public speaking club. One of the exercises we did was to count “uh”s. To this day I find myself counting uhs whenever I hear someone talking. Recently I heard Hillary speaking to a group, and counted 8 uhs before she completed the sentence. Obama? forget it. He is one big UH.

In all the Palin interviews that I saw this week, I don’t recall hearing her utter a single uh. And she never once used a teleprompter.

“Sarah Palin’s got to stop blaming the media soon”

Well, may be the media should stop accusing and spreading lies.

or is it that the media is allowed to continue and Palin needs to keep smiling and swallow the insults?

mooseburger on November 19, 2009 at 11:41 PM

And to make it as though this is HER fault and that she’s whining is really the ultimate in victimizing someone. Hey, you like getting beaten? No? You whiner, you!

Ridiculous.

AnninCA on November 19, 2009 at 11:29 PM

McCardle tried to say that Sarahs belief that the media was out to get her was erroneous, but that that belief made it come true. Tied herself in a pretzel.

“Sarah Palin’s got to stop blaming the media soon. It’s like Obama blaming George W. Bush for everything. It works for a while and then it gets old.”

One small difference is that Palin actually has a case. Other than that, good point.

The best question, I thought, was why she wasn’t prepared for the left elite press to go after her. That allowed her to say the obvious, that the campaign wasn’t expecting it, either, and hadn’t even given Couric a background book on her or her record.

That was a very, very embarassing moment….for Schmidt! *haha

Jeeze* What kind of campagaign strategist is this bozo?

AnninCA on November 19, 2009 at 11:44 PM

O’Reilly’s interview stank. What a complete waste of time. All about looking back. Nothing forward. He’s better than that. What possessed him? A monumental waste of precious time. I’ll wager Palin is considering not sitting for an interview w/him again. DD

Darvin Dowdy on November 19, 2009 at 11:08 PM

Too late, numnuts. O’Reilly sat down with her for about an hour. It’s his decision to tease it out over three nights. Tonight was meet ‘n greet. I rather liked finding out that she tried to do his show last year. It seems to reinforce the notion that her handlers were horrible and that they are lying now.

I also liked the momma bear and cubs analogy–don’t f*ck with my kids. What parent–what mother–couldn’t appreciate that? More meat tomorrow and Monday, so relax.

Wherever she goes, whatever she does, first and last, she’s an American and I’ll stand with her against liberals because she’s one of us.

They never will. They are too invested now.

I have never in my life seen anyone treated the way she has…..

reshas1 on November 19, 2009 at 11:30 PM

It may have started with Bork. Some others would be Clarence Thomas, Ken Starr, Monica Lewinsky (a little bit), Limbaugh, even Michelle Malkin (see that video last summer with Alex Jones nearly assaulting her). Others?

Definitely, the media has taken it to another level with Sarah Palin.

conservative pilgrim on November 19, 2009 at 11:47 PM

It’s like Obama blaming George W. Bush for everything. It works for a while and then it gets old.”

Not really.

Obama blamed Bush for two years prior to being elected. And Obama has continued to blame Bush since the election, which was well over a year ago.

Three solid years of blaming Bush and Obama’s still getting some pretty good traction from it.

Of course, what’s good for the Bamster will not be good for anyone else.

Some truth to that. She needs to change her perspective and realize that they are a lot less informed than she realized. Talk to them as though they are all journalism students, and it will go better.

But, I love the way Bill Clinton handles them best. He just rips them when they ask a stupid question.

When Palin told O’Reilly that she didn’t want to take her frustrations with McCain’s staff to McCain himself because he had so much on his mind already in running a Presidential campaign you could see the humanity of the lady resonating throughout her soul. Sarah is old-school, you fight through the challenges and difficulties of life, and don’t transfer or offload them to someone else who is occupied and preoccupied. Pure class.
