Quinnipiac: Obamacare opposed 51-35

posted at 11:36 am on November 19, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

This time, it’s not Rasmussen delivering the bad news among likely voters, but Quinnipiac among registered voters — a sample that should lean more towards Obama than away from him.  However, in the latest Q-poll conducted over the full week after Nancy Pelosi slammed her health-care reform bill through Congress, a majority of the 2518 respondents oppose ObamaCare.  And while three-quarters of the respondents find Obama personally likable, he’s at a -12 on the issue (via Geoff A):

Three-quarters of American voters – 74 percent – like President Barack Obama as a person, but only 47 percent like most of his policies, and voters disapprove 51 – 35 percent of the health care overhaul passed by the House of Representatives which he has endorsed, according to a Quinnipiac University national poll released today.

Voters disapprove 53 – 41percent of President Obama’s handling of health care.

Obama’s endorsement of the House of Representatives-passed health care plan makes no difference to 44 percent of American voters, while 24 percent say it makes them view him more favorably; 30 percent less favorably.

And once again, independents are fleeing the President and the Democrats:

The fall-off from Obama’s personal likability to approval of his policies is greater among independent voters, a group Obama carried in the election. Overall 28 percent of Americans say they like Obama personally but not his policies, while 34 percent of independents feel that way.

In fact, independents break harder than the general population on Obama’s handling of health care as well. While Obama getsa 41/53 approval/disapproval rating overall on this issue, among independents it is 35/59.  Among women, whom the White House has attempted to woo on health  care by framing it as a “women’s issue,” Obama is still underwater 44/49.  The overall number has remained fairly consistent for the last three months, however; even in August, Obama has a -13 on the issue.

The health-care plan has similar problems. Independents oppose it almost 2-1, 29/57, while women oppose it by double digits, 36/47.  Obama’s support of it erodes his support, too.  Independents are twice as likely to think less of him than more because of it, 17/33, while women split evenly 26/26.  The ObamaCare debate is undoubtedly a big anchor on his approval ratings.

No matter how much Americans would desire to have a beer summit with the President, they don’t want a government takeover of health care to get it.  That’s bad medicine, and that realization has become more apparent the longer the debate goes on.

As long as his supposed likability doesn’t translate into reelection, people can think whatever they want.

BTW, does anyone remember all the polls on Bush asking Americans what they thought of him personally? I sure don’t. They were always focused entirely on his job performance.

tarpon on November 19, 2009 at 11:48 AM

OK, we know that voters think Obamacare stinks – but – does it matter? Reid appears poised to pass something akin to Pelosi’s treasonous stack of wood pulp and the House has a passed bill in hand already. So, the question is: even if people opposed this 90-1, some form of Obamacare appears to headed to O’s desk. Anyone see an exit strategy on this for Obama/Reid/Pelosi in the unlikely event that this somehow it doesn’t pass? They’ve gone all in on this hand and either they break the house or lose the farm. They seem to be hell bent on passing something and if it’s anything like Pelosi’s bill, American freedom as we once knew it (politically and financially) is over. Call me a pessimist but I just don’t see them flinching from this game of chicken they’re engaged in.

ted c on November 19, 2009 at 11:52 AM

I am not 100% certain what exactly is the message from these polls:

Voters favor 57 – 35 percent giving people the option of being covered by a government- run health insurance plan, the “public option.” Independent voters approve 55 – 39 percent. The overall approval is down from 61 – 34 percent in an October 8 survey by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University. And they oppose two proposals to modify it:
Allowing states to opt out of the public option is a bad idea, voters say 49 – 43 percent;
Voters also oppose 47 – 38 percent the “trigger,” where the public option kicks in only if private insurance does not cover enough people.

Voters clearly don’t like the version House has passed. But they clearly love the public option; in fact, are opposed to diluting it with opt-outs and such. So is the opposition to Obamacare because it because it does not go far enough in terms of public option or they just don’t like the reform bit?

Someone needs to ask this question. But clearly, as it stands now, health reforms are a political liability for the democrats.

ObummerCare is really in trouble if a Quinnipiac poll finds 51-35 against it in a sample of 2518 registered voters–that’s a huge sample for a poll, and Quinnipiac usually tilts left (not surprising, it’s in Connecticut). Me thinks a pregnant Michelle will be making an appearance soon….

angryed on November 19, 2009 at 12:10 PM

Dude, isn’t she over 45? I don’t see her taking a risk. She is no Sarah Palin that is for sure. Maybe adoption, but pregnancy, no way.

So what’s it called when the ruling class does not respect the desires of the servants?

drjohn on November 19, 2009 at 12:16 PM

I just sent a message to Sherrod Brown asking if he plans on reading this whole bill befire voting, and whether or not he would be willing to opt out of his congressional insurance plan for the one they are trying to force on us. But with his 96.4% party line voting record, I’m not expecting a response.

loudmouth883 on November 19, 2009 at 12:19 PM

It’s a bad product. Simple. I still think voters DO want HCR. But this is just too complex and too messy.

They should have gone with a simple catastrophe plan that would have been portable and done away with the pre-existing restrictions.

I think voters would have said NO to the GOP had it been something simple, portable, and inexpensive.

People aren’t afraid of public option. They are appalled at this mess.

Meanwhile, Rasmussen’s Obama Approval Index at new low of -14.

Obamacare is not only wrong; it’s political suicide.

WannabeAnglican on November 19, 2009 at 11:56 AM

That’s 2 days in a row he’s in this deep at Rasmussen. They take a 3 day running average, so he’s maintaining it at this depth pretty steady. Probably getting hard to breathe this far underwater, eh bub? One can only anticipate that he’ll have a need for another vacation once he returns from his coronation as the Pacific President, a self-anointed moniker I’m sure he’ll be fond of repeating once he’s back here. Also, what a great transition into his next vacation –to Hawaii, where the great ocean can welcome it’s president….

Underwater.

..here’s the 4-1-1 on the Rasmussen poll: the two strongly categories (“strongly approve” and “strongly disapprove”) are classifications of people that Scott feels will act upon their opinion because they are motivated. Those in the other categories are not so motivated.

The significance of today’s numbers is that 41% of the sample are motivated by anti-Obama animus while only 46% of everybody are in favor of Obama whether motivated or not. That means his “above water” index is only +5%.

Still, ted, were I he, I would want a set of water wings if I were bathing at Kapiolani Park or Queen Surf and I sure would not stray too far from shore.

Body surfing at Sandy Beach or Makapuu is definitely off the schedule.

So illegals and those that refuse to buy health insurance were polled.

great insight! Good tips on the water wings. The Pacific may want to claims its ownership rights on it’s ‘president’

Three-quarters of American voters – 74 percent – like President Barack Obama as a person

Should be an irrelevant number… but sometimes this stupidity can sway elections.

I’m not terribly surprised, but very disappointed and concerned that he still has 41% supporting him on HC. Yeah, that’s not good in purely political terms, but it shows that a sizable segment of the US population is wholly ignorant of the Constitution and basic economics (see also: trolls).

It’s almost like reading “41% of Americans support ignoring the Constitution for the promise of ‘free’ stuff.”

What’s likeable about this guy, he’s an errogant little pr*ck! Is this just PC speak, saying they like the guy but oppose his policies?
