Quinnipiac poll: Obama now under 50% approval; Update: Q-poll data added
posted at 9:30 am on November 18, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Rasmussen has had Barack Obama under water for weeks on job-approval ratings, but usually they’re a leading indicator. Quinnipiac now shows the same trend, with Obama dropping below 50% approval for the first time in their poll series. Bloomberg reports that voters have lost confidence in Obama on a wide range of issues as well:
President Barack Obama’s approval rating has fallen below 50 percent for the first time in polling by Quinnipiac University as U.S. voter discontent grows over the war in Afghanistan.
Obama’s job approval rating fell to 48 percent in the Nov. 9-16 survey of registered voters nationwide by the Hamden, Connecticut-based university, with 42 percent polled saying they disapproved of the job he is doing.
“In politics, symbols matter, and this is not a good symbol for the White House,” Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, said in a statement.
Obama’s approval rating was 59 percent in a Quinnipiac survey conducted Feb. 25 to March 2.
Rasmussen surveys likely voters, while Gallup and others usually use the broadest measure, adults. Quinnipiac’s survey of registered voters makes this more predictive than most, and explains why they see the same trend over a longer period as Rasmussen.
Obama also lost ground on issues, especially the economy. In October, Obama only garnered a 47% approval on the economy; now it’s 43%. Disapproval on Afghanistan rose to 49%, up seven points in a month. Both are issues on which Obama has tried to be seen as taking charge, and Americans increasingly wonder if he’s up to the task.
Quinnipiac has not released the polling data yet. When they do, I’ll have more analysis. For now, though, Obama has certainly started heading into some troubling territory, and if his numbers remain mired at this level, Democrats in Congress will have to worry whether Obama will hurt more than he will help in what will be a tough mid-term election.
Update: Quinnipiac has released the poll data, and it’s very, very interesting:
- Economy: 43/52, 47/46 in October – independents 38/58
- Foreign policy: 49/42, 49/37 in October – independents 45/49
- Afghanistan: 38/49, 42/40 in October – inds 30/57
Those independent numbers are looking worse and worse for Democrats.

Cant go any lower. He cut off baby’s heads on the lawn of the white house and still get these people support.

Yes, but I’ll bet these folks hadn’t yet read about another heart-warming reunion by Obama with yet ANOTHER half-brother while in China. No, seriously. How many half-siblings does this guy have spread all over the world? And why’d we have to get this one. I think the dude in the hut in Kenya would have made a decision on Afghanistan by now.

I was surprised it took this long to get under 50% to be honest. The problem with Obama is that while people like him personally, they dislike everything he advocates. His stances on Afghanistan, Stimulus, Health Care, Cap-and-Trade, and foreign policy to name a few are all underwater. It was only a matter of time until those numbers caught up with him. Unless he does a magic dance of some kind he is stuck with those numbers because they will see the issue and the man as one and the same.

I love to see Obama where he would have been in the polls before the election, had the media done it’s job, and half of the country would have taken off their rose colored glasses. I am sure his numbers will turn around when the economy turns around, as most people are too obsessed with their reality shows and “Dancing with the Stars” to know that it did it on its own, with the billions of stimulus money being wasted. If the economy stays in the toilet, Obama is toast. It almost makes me want it to stay bad, but too many people are hurting.

More importantly, negative poll numbers tend to be self-sustaining if they exist for any length of time. Not only will the filthy lying dithering coward (perhaps reasons for the negative numbers) not have coattails for the 2010 elections, he could well be a lame duck before half his term of office is over. Here’s hoping because it would put a brake on the rampant radical socialism that he and his corrupt party have been forcing on the nation for the past 11 miserable months.
highhopes on November 18, 2009 at 9:42 AM
I agree with the guy in the Politico article that says it’s worse than the polls are reflecting.
Honestly, though, didn’t Democrats have a sense that the hype in the election would lead to an equal and opposite crash?
It was so fantastic type thinking that I blame voters as much as anyone. Goodness, talk about denial. Nobody could penetrate the vagueness of his answers and really discuss what we needed to do.
I’ll never forget in the one debate after the crash when asked what he would take off his agenda, Obama said, “Nothing.” The moderator asked again. I knew he was thinking like me, “Surely, you’re not that naive.”
But he was.
AnninCA on November 18, 2009 at 9:43 AM
I live in about as red a ‘hood as you will find. There’s a house in the area that bucks the trend and then some. During the election they had not one, not 2, but 3 Obama signs on the lawn. Every one of the 3 cars (nice new luxury cars) had multiple Obama stickers on them.
They kept the lawn signs in front of the house well after the election and inauguration, maybe Feb/March. They still kept the car stickers though throughout the summer.
Until all of a sudden I noticed 2 or 3 weeks ago when I walked by with the dogs, all the stickers were gone. Not sure if their HopeNChange fever went away or they just realized that having a bumper sticker a year after the election is very d-bag like. But whatever the case may be, 3 less obnoxious cars on the road.

How could his negatives NOT stay mired at this level, (or lower) Barry doesn’t seem to have that “moderation filter” that counsels him to retreat on his big socialist agenda. I keep thinking the ego factor is going to kick in at some point and he’ll back off both healthcare and crap and tax, but I actually think his bigger demon is his own incredible stupidity. For an Ivy league smart guy, (hee) he makes some really hidious decisions!
anniekc on November 18, 2009 at 9:44 AM
What I find interesting regarding Obama’s rating on Rasmussen is that 26% strongly approve of him, and 21% approve. On the disapproval side, 40% strongly disapprove and only 12% disapprove.
The much of Obama’s over all approval is soft. While most of the people who don’t like him, are strong in their dislike.
Personally I suspect that we’ve got a Bradley effect going on here. There are a lot of people who are still nervous about telling a complete stranger that they don’t like a black president. The left has been so free with tossing out the racist charge, that a lot of independants are squemish about opening themselves up to the charge.
If this is true, once it become obvious how many people don’t like Obama, a safety in numbers movement will occur.
If Obama’s overall approval drops to the low 40′s, it will quickly drop another 10 to 15 points.

I love the way liberals convince themselves that there is nothing to worry about.
1) The economy’s worse than anything Reagan had to deal with.
2) The economy had been bad for years prior to Reagan, all the way back to Nixon. Nowaday’s people have gotten used to the good times the Republicans had brought them.
3) Reagan sold optimism. Obama scolds people.
4) Reagan projected strength abroad. Obama bows to the king of Saudi Arabia.
There are a many differences between now and 1983, and none of them reflect well on Obama.

But a lot of recent developments are going to sink his numbers even lower. There’s no denying that double-digit unemployment is a sobering figure that has a lot of people scared. The health care debate also has a lot of folks on edge. But Obama’s really shot himself in the foot with his dithering on Afghanistan and his poor handling of the KSM trial. Strategically I think that Obama and the White House want the Dems to lose the House in 2010 so that he can blame the Republicans for everything leading up to the 2012 election. Dems in the House and Senate that are up for

The sad thing is that blacks as a group are quite conservative. They vote Democrat because the media and their culture tells them over and over again, that Republicans are all racist. If we can ever break through that cultural block, the Democrats are finished.

Mark Boabaca on November 18, 2009 at 9:58 AM
That’s actually not that great. Dems usually attract at least 90% of the black vote. The key of course is turnout. Obama got them out in record numbers in 2008. But if the novelty wears off, they may not show up in 2012. He cannot win reelection without turning out the same amount as last time. Hell, even that may not be enough given the way he’s hemorraging independents.

So true.
These are the numbers that matter. Most people are still afraid of being called racist if the don’t ‘like’ Obama personally, so job approval and personal likeability will artificially inflated. But when they are in the voting booth in 2012, it is going to come down to what your pocketbook has looked like in the last 4 years compared to the previous 4 years. No matter how hard they try, gov’t handouts won’t solve that either. The gov can’t create wealth — only waste it. Only the private sector actually creates anything, and Obama is doing his best to stomp that into the ground.

“It was no different than tryng Timothy McVeigh in a civil court.”
Also went on about the 9/11 attacks being an “act of murder” and therefore should be tried in civil court.
Leahy said all of this following claim by Holder that his Justice Department does not have a pre 9/11 mindset.
Dumb and Dumber.

Are you watching senate Dems? KILL THE HEALTH CARE BILL!!! Obama can’t hurt you now.
Vote NO on the vote to proceed! Call Blanche Lincoln, Ben Nelson and Mary Landrieu if you live in their states. They could kill this thing this week!

You mean that conservatives haven’t given out as much free cheese as liberals?

You are a Marxist if:
Taking an oath to uphold the Constitution while having no intention of doing so.
If you think that the Organization of Islamic Conference
has the same amount of states(57) as the U.S.A.
You tell the Chinese not to censor the internet while you empower Mark Lloyd to do that very thing.
Taking medical advice from a Eugenicist.
Voting to kill a child after a botched abortion.
If you keep blaming the last coach for your team’s losing record.
Funding labor unions while taxing laborers.
Bowing to a Bedouin king and emperor while disrespecting American citizens by putting down their country.
and the list goes on…………….

Remember he is also getting his negatives ratings from the the liberal Left for Obama not being liberal enough.
All Obama has to do is do a few highly visible things he promised the liberals and his ratings will go up a bit.

Lately I’ve noticed that Obama’s popularity among Memphis blacks is not what it was six months ago — for some, the thrill is clearly gone. And it looks like Obama has lost the majority of typical old-style Southern Democrats.

I have a feeling that the MSM will start jumping ship in the near future. When this occurs…he’s officially toast.

“Ended up” is a long way from “just starting”.
Where do you guess Maobama will “end up”?
