Obamateurism of the Day
posted at 8:05 am on November 18, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Earlier this year, Hillary Clinton offered an amateurish moment of her own when she gave Sergei Lavrov a “reset” button. The idea itself was a cheap shot at the Bush administration, which had annoyed the Russians by pursuing a missile defense system in eastern Europe to counter the Iranian threat that the Russians had either ignored or actively fed. But the State Department fouled up by mistranslating the label, using the Russian word for “overcharge” rather than “reset,” and using Latin alphabet characters instead of Cyrillic, the norm for Russian.
Normally we wouldn’t apply that to Obama for this feature, but Obama himself declared that this diplomatic embarrassment actually worked as intended … despite any evidence to the contrary:
While White House officials acknowledged on Sunday that there was no way a new agreement to replace the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, or Start, would be ratified by the legislatures of either country even if it was completed by the end of the year, they said that they expected to at least reach an interim “bridge” agreement that would preserve the status quo until a new agreement was reached.
Sunday afternoon’s session was the fifth bilateral meeting with Mr. Medvedev since Mr. Obama took office vowing to repair America’s relationship with Russia, and administration officials expressed satisfaction with their progress so far.
“The reset button has worked,” Mr. Obama said after the meeting, alluding to the administration’s early promise to press a “reset” button in America’s relationship with Russia after several years of bickering over a host of issues like missile defense and the status of Kosovo.
So how exactly has this reset button worked? The Obama administration flip-flopped on missile defense despite assuring the Poles and Czechs in the spring of his intention to follow through on the Bush plan. In response, the Russians refused to extend sanctions on Iran. The status of Kosovo has still not been resolved. And Obama hasn’t even gotten his START agreement yet, even though the Russians need nuclear arms limitations much more than we do, as they can hardly afford another nuclear arms race.
The “reset” button worked … for Russia. They got us to back off of missile defense and alienate our allies in eastern Europe, in exchange for exactly nothing. We’re the ones that got overcharged, thanks to the amateurish diplomacy of both Hillary and Obama.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

So far what zero has done hasn’t worked out for us. Hope we can hold out for a few more years.

Where’s our reset button?
publiuspen on November 18, 2009 at 8:09 AM
Hmm, belligerent Iranians, Russia is gaining in power (and territory), unemployment in double digits and the not so faint scent of malaise wafting through the air…
Are we sure it wasn’t a rewind button?

So, the reset button “worked” in the same sense that bloodletting “cured” George Washington’s throat infection….

The ONLY reset that would help is a redo of the 2008 general election vote.
SOMEBODY PLEASE PUSH THE BUTTON, NOW!

I have come to believe that he is right, congress and the senate have to go, no exceptions, not even the few good people there, otherwise the message will not be received… Thus my new blog post… I vant to zee your (Healthcare) Papers…

In the meantime, we the people are preparing to press the reset button that really matters… in 2010 and 2012.

The overwhelming “guilt” Obama must feel for the United States being the sole remaining super power must keep him awake all night long in pure angst.
Yeah, the “reset” button has worked, taking the United States down a peg or two each week, in order to level the playing field. It is just so unfair that our system is the sole system that oppressed people all around the world either wish to flock to, emulate.
Or, among Obama’s growing circle of BFF’s, destroy.
Level the playing field…that is what the “reset” button is all about.
Pitiful.

right TXUS. get involved in your local elections & stay involved at all levels.
I am planning a fundraiser next month for man (Robert Hurt)running against our Dem Cong (Perriello, 5th CD, VA).
Each & every one of us needs to get out there.

Now who was it who negotiated the original START. . .
maybe we need someone like that in the White House again.
Working for the country in opposition to the US? Part of the plan.
rbj on November 18, 2009 at 8:19 AM
If Americans had decided to trash the nation, would they have picked anybody more effective than the filthy lying dithering coward in the White House?
On a side note, the sign up sheet for the “Taking Back America” Rally is going around. Everybody can’t sign up to bring the paper products. Somebody’s got to volunteer to bring the pitchforks, tar, and feathers.

“The reset button has worked,”
Mission accomplished?
It worked because he said so.
No one will actually ask him this question to his face. Someone might ask Gibbs, but he’ll just ramble on incoherently for 5 minutes.

I think Obummer means to reset the clock back to 1979 when US moral was low and not wanting to stand up to the Russians. We’re looking at Jimmy Carter – the sequel.

How about this for missed opportunity or Obamateurism of the Chinese Trip:
The Chinese really like basketball. Obama likes to play basketball. Why didn`t Obama set up a game with him playing basketball with several young college Chinese players?
What better way to impress the Chinese of the “coolness” of the American President than him playing basketball with them?
Big time missed opportunity and photo op by Obama.
