Obama: “We’ve restored America’s standing in the world”
posted at 8:28 pm on November 18, 2009 by Allahpundit
The perfect companion clip to Ace’s post yesterday on The One’s illusions about what his global charm offensive might actually accomplish. The key bit comes early, at about a minute in. Why hasn’t his glorious restoration of America’s “standing” translated into any foreign-policy achievements thus far? Simple, he says: We’re in the laying-the-groundwork stage right now. Softening up the people. Giving them a jolt of Hopenchange fee-vah that’s going to force their leaders to play ball with America whether they want to or not. Meanwhile, here’s what’s in the Times today:
A week ago, when Mr. Obama kicked off his trip in Japan, things were not so grim. Tokyo welcomed him as much as a celebrity as a world leader, with cries of “Obama-san!” from the people who gathered in the rain to watch his motorcade pass. Local newspapers gushed about how he told his Japanese hosts that he wanted to eat tuna and Kobe beef. Even the ballyhoo from right-wing bloggers back at home over Mr. Obama’s deep bow to Emperor Akihito did not seem to dent Mr. Obama’s image in Japan; his aides said he was unfazed by the criticism.
But Mr. Obama quickly discovered that popularity on the Asian streets did not necessarily translate into policy successes behind closed doors in the Kantei, the Japanese White House, let alone in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
Well, fine, but what about Iran? Watch the clip and you’ll see that he’s jazzed about all the international cooperation that’s coalescing to pressure the mullahs. How’s that working out?
Iran’s foreign minister appeared to renege on a pact that the U.S. had hoped would curtail the Islamic Republic’s ability to build a nuclear bomb, dealing a blow to the Obama administration’s efforts to try to resolve the West’s standoff with Tehran.
Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said Wednesday in Tehran that Iran wouldn’t send any of its uranium out of the country, as envisioned in a deal struck Oct. 1 between Iranian negotiators and counterparts from the U.S., France, Russia and the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Two United Nations Security Council diplomats said they view the deal as essentially dead, but expect council members to wait until the end of the year before pushing for fresh sanctions against Iran.
Also dead: The possibility of “crippling sanctions,” since evidently America’s standing hasn’t been so “restored” in Russia and China that they’re prepared to agree to any kind of meaningful punishment for Iran. You know what the real punchline of this clip is? For all the bluster about Obama’s “outreach” to Khamenei, his approach thus far has been more or less a continuation of Bush’s approach in the final year or two of his presidency. Lots of blather about dialogue, lots of empty threats, and a few halting attempts at diplomacy, all to no end. The big difference: Bush actually convinced the Security Council to pass several rounds of sanctions against Iran (not that they’ve done much good). So much for charm. Exit question: Does scaring the hell out of our international creditors by running up mind-blowing debt also factor into the “America’s standing” equation, or is that simply a function of The One’s personal appeal?

Blowback

I’ve made an extensive list of accomplishments of President Obama that have restored the US in the world’s eyes:
-we now provide citizenship to foreign appiclants afflicted and dying of AIDS.
-if we capture enemy combatants who murder thousands of our civilians, we’ll try you in civilian court.
-our Commander in Chief will willingly bow to any ceremonial royalty in your nation.
Is that all it takes?
Vincenzo on November 18, 2009 at 9:25 PM
This too will pass… but does it have to take so darn long to pass?
And it would help if his approval ratings would get closer to 30% instead of 50.
ABC, CNN, CBS… those pollsters are just trying to keep the RCP average above 50… they have to get a really lopsided sample but they are committed to doing it.
I wouldn’t be surprised to learn they know where and when to call to get the answers they want. Half the US can not like this guy!

The announcement about trying KSM in civilian court–arguably the dumbest political decision of the decade–the video of the BOW to the emperor of japan, Maobama’s failure in China–indeed, their scolding of him for his profligate spending–this month has been an unmitigated disaster for Maobama. And I’m loving it.

Obama had better behave himself:
1.Intentionally placing the country at risk within the country is an impeachable offense. Every member of the Obama Gang needs to be impeached for their vile endangerment of the American people. It isn’t just New York City. It’s ALL of us.
2.What Obama wants to do is CRIMINAL. It most certainly is a crime to do what they are contemplating. Willfully — and unnecessarily — endangering the public is a crime.
3. Obama has delusions of grandeur — pathological ones.
I predict that there will be NO trial of KSM et al. in NYC. I’m not sure how it happens, but it will most likely not happen. Several scenarios come to mind, and none of them involve the Obama Gang changing its view.

What is somewhat ironic about this is the net effect of his inability to affect any change on the world stage (none). That along with the weakening of the dollar/economy plays right into the minority of the population that would like the U.S. to drop out of world affairs all together (ala Ross Perot). Kind of weird really.

Obama: “We’ve restored America’s standing in the world”
The only thing that has “changed” internationally is the fact that we now have a President who emanates nothing but naiveté, weakness and a seriousness for photo ops instead of results:
Obama’s Popularity Doesn’t Mean Much Abroad
As ever, countries have interests, not friends.

Failure is what you get when your foreign policy platform is pretty much made up of “I’m not Bush”.
Hope and Change in Iran:
But …But…But Obama is not Bush.Everybody is supposed to make nice now.
Hope and Change in France:
Never thought I would see the day that the French leadership was stronger and smarter than the American leadership.
Hope and Change in Germany:
…
Looks like Germany does not watch Olbermann and Matthews either.
Hope and Change in China:
Another trip…Another failure.
It’s okay though because Obama speaks so well.
He has a gift you know.
Hope and Change in Japan:
Hope and Change in Europe:
Nothing like pissing off our strongest ally.
Way to go with the “smart Power”.
Hope and Change in Russia:
Putin has been bit#h slapping Obama since day one.
Russia has got to be rolling on the floor laughing at our Paparazzi President.
Hope and Change in N. Korea:
That’s alright…Hillary will give them another basketball and everything will be alright.
Hope and Change for Israeli/Palestinian :
Wow!!!…but don’t worry,the adults are in charge.
Hope and Change in Pakistan:
Hope and Change in Afghanistan:
Reality sets in……
The Afghans/Pakistanis don’t care what the Obama administration has to say because they know they are cutting and running.
Hope and Change for the Czech’s:

O’bama’s shallow definition of “our standing in the world” is solely based on biased polls of elite (and effete) Europeans and their media lapdogs.
Our bridge toll-collectors will now jump in to cite polls by the Leftist Pew organization abroad. Pew is a reputable pollster when they are neutral, but polling widespread places in vast and half-vast continents is beyond their scope.
Seems to me that a true measure of our “standing in the world” could be ascertained by citing statistics from the Bush years.
For our Leftists here, I do not know the answers to these questions, which means I ask them without bias.
1. During the Bush regime, did the number of people from other countries who wanted to come here to live go down? If so, by how much?
2. Did the number of foreign students coming to the US to get educations in our universities decline? If so, by how much?
3. Did requests to the US government from foreign countries for aid and assistance (AKA MONEY) decline during those years, or increase?
And one I already know the answer to.
Who did more for AIDS in Africa-Bill Clinton, or George W. Bush?
Del Dolemonte on November 18, 2009 at 11:26 PM
And Obama could give less of a sh!t because it is the American public(especially the American Soldier) who has to suffer the consequences of Obama’s failures and arrogance.
Baxter Greene on November 18, 2009 at 11:29 PM
You can add just about every move Obama has made in pursuing the Presidency and since he has been President being based on political calculations motivated by polling.
It is obvious that Obama is putting his “second” Afghanistan plan together based on political calculations and polling.
Trial balloon after trial balloon is sent out with ranges from “sending 34,000 troops” to “getting out”.
each position takes time to get accurate polling so Obama continues pushing back his decision until he can get some type of plan that brings in the most political points across the spectrum.
An actual plan of “success in defeating the enemy” does not even enter his mind.
If it did, he would grant what his own General is requesting.
Del is exactly right and the biased polling is coming in off the charts now with democrats being polled at least 13 points or higher than Republicans to try and cover Obama’s a$$.
