McCain praises Schmidt and Wallace, says “it’s time to move on”

I held out on Palin posts today as long as I could but some drama simply must be blogged, my friends. A diplomatic statement by Maverick, and no doubt an attempt to exert a little authority in defense of his loyalists, but the famous McCain temper can’t be suppressed forever.

I figure he’s at about DefCon 3 here.

“There’s been a lot of dust flying around in the last few days and I just wanted to mention that I have the highest regard for Steve Schmidt and Nicolle Wallace and the rest of the team … and I appreciated all the hard work and everything they did to help the campaign,” he said.

“I think it’s just time to move on,” he said…

“Campaigns are high-pressure situations. The only more high-pressure situation that I’ve been in is combat and prison,” said McCain, a Navy flyer shot down during the Vietnam War and held prisoner for 5-1/2 years.

“But you know, I’m proud of Nicolle and Steve and (senior campaign official) Rick Davis and (senior adviser) Mark Salter and I’ll always have great affection for them,” he said.

McCain, who has largely kept silent in the high-profile run-up to Palin’s book release and tour, said he remained proud of Palin, whom he plucked from obscurity as governor of Alaska last year to join him in his campaign.

Er, didn’t he ask his campaign staff just two days ago to not give the story any extra oxygen by eschewing TV interviews on the subject? Does he not realize that defending those staffers from his former running mate will … actually give it a lot more oxygen? It’s not like Palin’s going to follow his lead and agree that “it’s time to move on,” either. She’s got a book to promote and this is one of the chief topics. If he’s trying to smooth this over, he’s doomed to fail, at least in the short term.

If you missed it in Headlines, here’s video of Nicolle Wallace obeying McCain’s wishes — sort of. Such is Wallace’s credibility these days that even Maureen Dowd tends to believe Palin over her. Yes, really.

Squid Shark

its always time to “finally” “take the gloves off” with mccain and “rinos” in the palinstinian rubber room. palin is 100% electable – it’s just that the electorate is part of the anti-palin conspiracy.

Oh jeez, quit with the nutty conspiracy slander about McCain’s service. Did some Hufftards just register to comment here?

nope. these are those uber-patriotic troop supporters who think the sitting president saluting returning coffins is a dishonorable disgrace but that st. palin running to ft. hood to sign autographs over the warm bodies of the recent massacre is okay.

the fact is that palinstinian zealots hate mexicans more than they love the troops or america.

So here I am, one of those you are smearing but before you go off on your righteous “love” of others, here is my story.
My mother is a natural born American. I on the other hand was born in Canada. When my family moved back down to the US when I was a teen ager. That almost didn’t happen for the red tape and problems we met. MY MOTHER IS AN AMERICAN and they almost didn’t let me and my Canadian born siblings in. I AM AN IMMIGRANT! a LEGAL ONE!
IT irritates me to no end when you pretend This is about race. It isn’t. It is about the security of our borders and the fact that we don’t have to let everyone in. NO OTHER COUNTRY DOES IT! Not russia where a lot of illegals come from, not Ireland, Australia or New Zealand or the kicker of all kickers.. MEXICO. If you want to talk about loosening some of the numbers of immigrants each year I am for it.

But here is my case against stupid unsecure border lovers like you- Teen agers used to take the jobs that “NO american’s will do” but they can’t now because they have been priced right out of the entry level job market. People like you say it is immigrants. Mexicans, russians, and others here illegally don’t give a Rat’s pattuti that they become American’s. they come for the tax free benefits at my expense. You are likely on welfare so have no clue what I am talking about. They are NOT real Immigrants. Someone like ME is a real on.. I wanted to BE american, TO LIVE In American to say I AM AN AMERICAN! Illegals do not. They don’t care. LEGAL immigrants care because they work for getting here. I vote for sending the fakes all home and sending unsecure border lovers like yourself with them. You don’t deserve your citizenship.. from a real American to a fake.

because it’s the seminal claim in the portrayal of mccain as a vicious, backstabbing rino traitor. the antimccain derangement of populist conservatism is based on the fact that he wasn’t in lockstep with the anti-immigration nuts.

maybe you came in accepting some second-order anti-mccain meme, such as the claim that he’s somehow done palin dirty. if that’s the case, then feel free to “prove” that mccain did or said something wrong by palin.

if you’re not an anti-mccain nut at all, then feel free to drop it altogether.

not in general. i mean people who believe that a misdemeanor transgression is equivalent to an “invasion” which threatens the republic.

Sneaking into the country and stealing American jobs…

derk er jerbs!

…and using tax payer funded entitlements is still considered illegal.

i still cant get over all of these “conservatives” who are prepossessed with a concern about the stability and sustainability of entitlement programs.

And, before you start with the usual meme…’jobs Americans won’t do~I’m sure at 10.2% unemployment, Americans will work construction jobs.

i work at the low end of the wage scale and, yes, those jobs americans wouldn’t do in the good times are still jobs they won’t do. i see white co-workers and black co-workers ditch their jobs summarily because working for less than $9/hr is a hassle they’re unwilling to endure. the people who don’t speak english are the only ones who appreciate that they have a job in this recession. i know at least two “tea partiers” who are spending the recession at home trying to get on sosoc disability benefits for phantom pains they claim to have.

He did and it is still out there to see if you look for it.

Palin would do well to step lightly around McCain. There’s nothing quite so unattractive as ingratitude. She’s enjoying a place on the national political stage today… because McCain put her there.

Both the McCain campaign and Palin herself have blame in the fact that they fell short in 2008. Nobody put a gun to McCain’s head and forced him to “suspend” his campaign, only to go to Washington and cluelessly support the TARP. And Palin certainly could have, and should have, refused to allow little Katie Couric to eat her lunch on national TV. Ultimately, it was Palin’s responsibility to protect her own political image despite whatever direction she received from the campaign staff.

Frankly, while I disagree with McCain ideologically on certain issues… I have more overall trust in him. He’s a known quantity, and even though his sense of honor and integrity might, on the surface, seem arbitrary at times… there’s a pattern that I recognize and understand.

I don’t know Sarah Palin, and even though I’m willing to give her the benefit of the doubt on her decision to abandon the governorship of her state, I’m unlikely to trust her blindly.

If she wants to get into a “he said /she said” with McCain… I think she might be disappointed at the outcome.

Murf76 on November 19, 2009 at 8:41 AM

Bottom line, he should have called his people together and told them to knock it off when they started attacking Palin as “Unnamed Sources.” It was a sleazy way for McCain to attack Palin and, even if he wasn’t goading them on, it was weeks after the attacks started that McCain gave any statement of support for his former running mate.

highhopes on November 18, 2009 at 7:14 PM

A+ If he really had control of his campaign he would have understood that they were hurting HIS campaign. This clothing issue should have been nipped in the bud before it became such a big deal. Why would anyone honestly think that someone being dismissed as hillbilly trash would even know where to get a high priced stylist who could command a 50K payment for her services?

I hope Palin doesn’t allow any residual affection for McCain to overrule his lack of support and do any campaigning for him.

katiejane on November 19, 2009 at 9:08 AM

Does he not realize that defending those staffers from his former running mate will … actually give it a lot more oxygen? It’s not like Palin’s going to follow his lead and agree that “it’s time to move on,” either. She’s got a book to promote and this is one of the chief topics.

Well, if Palin doesn’t move on and never speak about these issues again, she will have proven herself the egomaniac I always thought she was- in the same vein as Obama himself. I’ve read excerpts from her book, and she comes off as constantly whining, constantly a victim. I watched her for an hour on Hannity last night, and she came off as a victim. MOVE PAST IT PALIN. If your goal is to talk about the issues, then stop talking about your hurt feelings from the campaign. I’m sorry, and I know she has no job so must sell books, but she’s proving the point of those who don’t think she can handle the pressure of governor let alone president.

TheBlueSite on November 19, 2009 at 9:19 AM

katiejane on November 19, 2009 at 9:29 AM

McCain may have advanced Gov Palin’s rise to national politics but it is likely that she would have become a known brand within four to eight years anyway. The problem with McCain was always that he follows mostly his progressive (read liberal DIABLO) aides and not the sentiments of his conservative base. His affection for being in the NYSlimes and WashComPost as their favorite republican spokesperson (why would he be a favorite of such leftwing democrap papers?) went to his head. Gov. Palin is doing McCain a favor by alerting him to the mediocrity and mendaciousness of these non republican/conservative aides.

NOW I’M TICKED!

I have three teenagers that have had a horrible time finding jobs. My oldest daughter (now Sophomore in college) applied over 40 places and finally found some part-time jobs to help pay for college. SHE WOULD KILL FOR A $9/HR JOB!

Instead, she saw for herself how illegals have taken over many of the low-end jobs. And before you say she wouldn’t do some jobs… think again. My daughter is a “softball-chick” who carried bundles of shingles up ladders to the top of our two-story house when we were re-doing our roof.

You are a hundred percent wrong here. Low-end jobs used to be filled by teenagers. Now, they have to compete with illegals.

the people who don’t speak english are the only ones who appreciate that they have a job in this recession.

eh on November 18, 2009 at 10:55 PM

I also claim BS on this argument also. Illegals know they can get jobs because they underbid everyone legal. And they don’t appreciate the job… only the money.

A friend of mine, who is a roofing foreman, has had horrible experiences with the lack of quality typically exhibited by illegals. They take frequent breaks for no reason, and he often has to redo the majority of their work.

They take real work away from real Americans.

How on earth can you make that statement with a straight face? Where’s the connection? The ONLY ones??? Re-read what you said, which has now been reposted at least twice, think it through, then tell us what you really meant to say. A mind is a terrible thing to refuse to use.

McCaine and Co. need to sit down and STFU, they had their chance. Look where that got us.

i work at the low end of the wage scale and, yes, those jobs americans wouldn’t do in the good times are still jobs they won’t do. i see white co-workers and black co-workers ditch their jobs summarily because working for less than $9/hr is a hassle they’re unwilling to endure. the people who don’t speak english are the only ones who appreciate that they have a job in this recession. i know at least two “tea partiers” who are spending the recession at home trying to get on sosoc disability benefits for phantom pains they claim to have.

eh on November 18, 2009 at 10:55 PM

How is it you have time to post on a website in the middle of the afternoon if your so busy doing jobs that other american won’t do?
What exactly is that job they won’t do?
You generalize about a whole group because you know two people.
Maybe they are just two run of the mill losers like you one other person.

Well, if Palin doesn’t move on and never speak about these issues again, she will have proven herself the egomaniac I always thought she was-

TheBlueSite on November 19, 2009 at 9:19 AM

If it wasn’t this, you’d find something else to complain about.

Jim Treacher on November 19, 2009 at 3:07 PM

the portrayal of palin as a maligned woman suffering from betrayal by the mccain team is basically the plotline for the tabloid conflict between jennifer anniston and angelina jolie. the only difference is that jennifer anniston

doesn’t feed her tabloid drama while palin has taken an active hand in trivializing herself with this stupid nonsense.

in a couple weeks palin will be making a book tour stop at ft. hood to sell copies of her ghost-written vanity biography over the warm corpses of last week’s massacre there. she is beyond tasteless. she is repugnant.

eh on November 18, 2009 at 8:13 PM

You are the sort of person that deserves a major ass whippin’ every day for the rest of your life, just on account.

As someone who follows Sarah very closely, and lives about 20 miles from Ft Hood, Texas, I knew she was coming, before the terror attacks.

But even if she HADN’T originally planned this, so what?

Form Facebook:

I’m looking forward to seeing everyone in every stop on the tour, but I’m especially looking forward to meeting our brave men and women in uniform at Fort Hood.

I’m joining the efforts of many others by donating my royalties from the book sales during our stop at Fort Hood to the families of the victims whose lives have been forever changed by the tragic events of November 5th.

I am humbled to be able to join the larger effort called “Community Response to 11/5,” which was established by the Central Texas-Fort Hood Chapter of the Association of the US Army (AUSA).

You can read more about their great efforts here: http://www.forthoodausa.org/.

- Sarah Palin

Let’s see, she’s donating money and just publicized the website of the organization set up to aid those families harmed by the al Qaeda connected terrorist. The same one the Chicago thug “president” is trying to cover his ass over. Did you know that this terrorist was on Obama’s Homeland Security transition team, did you?

Anyhow, Sarah’s visit to Ft Hood will be most appreciated, and by posting the website http://www.forthoodausa.org/ on her Facebook page, she just exposed it to millions of patriots who will help as well.

Now, kindly go crawl back into what ever sewer you dwell in.

The real question and story here relates to which Republican Lilliputian 2012 candidates will hire these inside-the-Beltway trolls.

Pawlenty has already hired some of McCain’s crack politcal team, which doesn’t exactly give me good feelings about him being the kind of outsider our country and the GOP need.

Blacksmith8 on November 19, 2009 at 4:46 PM

The point of good leadership and building a team is knowing when you’re receiving good advice. Surrounding yourself with mentors/advisors who are smarter than you is the right thing to do.

I watched her for an hour on Hannity last night, and she came off as a victim. MOVE PAST IT PALIN. If your goal is to talk about the issues, then stop talking about your hurt feelings from the campaign.

TheBlueSite on November 19, 2009 at 9:19 AM

BS has a problem. BS is opposing Levin, Hannity, Beck, and Limbaugh. You stoooopid. Remember folks, Rush is right in so many ways.

Blacksmith8 on November 19, 2009 at 4:51 PM

Let’s start calling a spade a spade.

The Rinos and commies know that LaRaza, Soros, and lots of lots of cashola come with being an illegal lover. It has zero, zilch, nothing to do with any other reason. The dems. see voters for them and rinos will never get their vote.

Soros gave McLame tons o money during the amnesty kerfuffle so things are just going along swimmingly for the commies…America will be “Idiocracy” in no time.

Mexico is beautiful and rich with resources..The corruption and drugs make it unlivable. Now we have it too….Isn’t that great.

The worst part is the hokey racism crap…nobody believes it…It is about the money and the votes. The heck with America. Congress will live in their gated communities with their cadillac health plans…..see you in the que with hose and his six kids.

Or do they do the old switcharoo …;)

jerrytbg on November 19, 2009 at 5:52 PM

This statement by McCain is EXACTLY the problem. Instead of embracing the new life-giving blood into the Republican party, the old guard circles the wagons, my friends. Until republicans start seeing this for what it is – A WAR AGAINST LIBERALISM – and acting on it like Sarah does, we will never get back in power and radicalism will continue to ruin this country.
Sarah Palin was the only factor that caused true excitement and optimism on the right in 2008, and only true conservatives willing to speak their heart and mind will do the same in 2010 and 2012. This Rodney King approach to politics will get us run over again and we need leaders in the party who will not get along with liberals but destroy their arguments, policies and philosophies.
We better strive for unity now because if we keep eating our own we are done before we get started.

txrmctague on November 19, 2009 at 6:16 PM

I like Sen. McCain. I was happy to vote for him in 2008, and I remain aghast that he lost to the leftist rookie. He’s had a long-term reputation for being tight with his staff – there’s not a lot of turnover. Rick Davis and Mark Salter have been with him for ages and put their heart into that campaign. However, the way Sarah Palin was trashed by his staff after the campaign was tacky and unforgivable. Steve Schmidt and Nicolle Wallace were not exactly subtle in dropping “anonymous” bombs on Gov. Palin.

Sen. McCain didn’t participate in it, but he waited longer than he should to speak out about it and he never forcefully squashed the ugly stuff said about her. She made mistakes, but she put herself out as a target trying to help him. She didn’t deserve to be trashed that way or to be blamed for the team not winning. There were a lot of reasons they didn’t win and most of them have nothing to do with either Sen. McCain or Gov. Palin.

If he kept quiet when she was trashed then I think he should also stay quiet when she’s rather mildly telling her side of the story.

Jill1066 on November 19, 2009 at 6:16 PM

Steve Schmidt and Nicolle Wallace have no class and that resonated around McCain’s pathetic excuse for a campaign and doomed him to failure. His lapdog, Lindsey Grahamnesty was caught on video as he addressed La Raza, that those who were against amnesty as racists and bigots. He should never be elected for public office again. McCain is well known as a RINO under the guise of being a “maverick”. The GOP has some real problems in their hierarchy.

Boy, is this one set of advice she shouldn’t follow and I’m sure she won’t as she marches to the beat of her own drum. Besides it’s unlikely she will ever get your support unless she loses her mind to become a RINO and even worse a liberal.

Ironic that those of you that dislike Palin have so much ‘free’ advice for her and her fellow conservatives.

McCain was in combat and prison…Gee, I don’t think I’ve heard that before…Whoever said that you shouldn’t let the first thing on your resume’ become the last thing on your resume was right…Get over it John. This so-called leader of the GOP has been all but invisible since he was soundly beaten by the anti-American communists sympathizer from Chi-town…It’s time for him to fade away to one of the dozens of houses he owns.
