China hits the mute button on Obama

posted at 11:36 am on November 18, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

If Barack Obama hoped to make a positive impression on the Chinese people, his trip to Beijing was not terribly successful — but in this case, it wasn’t the fault of Obama.  China’s leaders made sure that Obama didn’t get the chance, by blacking out domestic media coverage of his visit.  In the words of the AP, Hu Jintao and the Chinese government “stifled Obama’s charisma”:

But in China, Obama’s hosts successfully stifled those prodigious public talents, keeping his message from the people with media censorship and smothering it in staid diplo-speak.

On previous foreign trips in his taxing first year in office, the president sent inspiring words winging to millions of satellite dishes in the Muslim world and sparked Obama mania in Europe.

But in China, it has been tougher to reach out to ordinary citizens. His best attempt, a town hall meeting streamed on the White House website, suffered from what was largely a nationwide media blackout.

Not that Obama helped his own cause, either. The AP seems unusually critical of Obama’s lack of charisma when he did have the stage:

And Obama’s talks on Tuesday with President Hu Jintao were followed by a dull public appearance, with both leaders reading out statements to the media stuffed with diplomatic code words.

The US president shuffled his papers on the lectern, scratched an eyebrow and looked across at Hu, as his host read out a long speech. The arid diplomatic translations made the occasion seem even more sterile.

It’s an interesting report, mainly for how the AP reports on the trip, which resulted in no movement from the status quo.  Stephen Collinson reports that Obama is playing for “the long game,” happy to meet with Hu even if the meeting didn’t produce any agreements or changes.  Obama will take “domestic hits” over a “lack of progress now,” he says, hopeful that his visit will build a relationship where he can make progress later.

That’s a rather odd take.  After all, Obama hasn’t exactly improved the US-China relationship in his first year in office; in fact, he’s actively made it worse by hitting China with two trade tariffs and threatened a trade war during a global recession.  No one expected Obama to transform China into a popular democracy with one televised appearance, which seems to be the strawman the AP uses for other potential critics.  People did expect Obama to repair the relationship and clean up his own mess, which apparently didn’t happen, or at least the AP didn’t report it if he did.

The actions of Hu come as no surprise, but it does point out the difficulties in dealing with China and its formidable, oppressive government.  They have no desire to let the US infect its population with notions of liberty, whether the carrier is George Bush, Barack Obama, or Paris Hilton.  Trade will force them to be more open, but only to a point.

China hits the mute button on Obama

Maybe the Chinese can mass produce this “mute button” so that we may all partake.

Obummer has no notion of liberty in the first place.
I’m surprised he’d be censored.

What could Obowma possibly say to the Chinese other than beg for more financial support?

Obama is wondering how to get that media blackout technology that China has and the Great Firewall of China is interesting too.

WashJeff on November 18, 2009 at 11:44 AM

When Obama agreed to the appearance, was there any discussion about the appearance being broadcast? Did the Chinese say that they would show it or that they would black it out? If there was no promise that it would be broadcast in full, then Obama was complicit in the censorship. If they did promise to broadcast the entire event, Obama needs to tell the world that they didn’t keep their promise, and that he is disappointed that china has no interest in free speech.
If there was no discussion about how it would be treated, then Obama has no idea what he is doing.

Well, we can always threaten them with a totally devalued dollar to pay off our debt. They seem a little sensitive to that possibility.

They forgot name tags and the teleprompter, so when the President and the Chinese leader, Hu Jintao, met, this was the transcribed exchange:

Our President: Who are you?

BigMike252 on November 18, 2009 at 12:11 PM

But in China, Obama’s hosts successfully stifled those prodigious public talents, keeping his message from the people

And yet, didn’t I just read this in a Politico report linked from HA about how the dems are losing independents:

Pat Waak, the chairwoman of the Colorado Democratic Party, said the party had so far failed to convince independent voters of the steps it had taken to improve the economy. “I think the economy is at the base of the tension,” she said. “Quite frankly, we’ve got to do a better job of messaging. There’s a lot of work to be done to get independents more comfortable with what we’re doing.”

So, here in the US, independent voters aren’t being persuaded because the dems need to do a better job of messaging, but in China he has “prodigious public talents”.

I think he’s communicated quite clearly what he intends to communicate and there are natural consequences to doing so:

1) Independents are starting to listen and they don’t like it
2) the Chinese don’t want to hear it in the first place

Isn’t there a fable running around about an emperor without clothes?

Barry is a narcissist. The thought most likely never occured to him or his idiots that tell him what to say, what to do and who hope he sticks to the script; because when he doesn’t he sounds and looks like the idiot he is.

That they would deny him the opprotunity to tell their people how great he is, to tell them how successful he has been in his first year; to tell them how he has improve the standing of America in the world as a leader among nations and is guiding America out of a deep depression by creating and saving jobs with the money he borrowed from them; that had to hurt him deeply.

But the mass media will put the bandaid on that ouche and kiss it to make it better. They will tell us how successful he was in behind door negoiations and improving our relaitonships with China and the other countries he visits, and of course; what a great president he is.

Franklyn on November 18, 2009 at 2:21 PM

In traditional diplomacy, agreements are worked out months before leaders show up, smile, have photographs taken, and sign them.

Obama’s “without preconditions” policy effectively has reversed this traditional timeline. Now the photo-ops come before the agreements — and the agreements themselves may never happen.

GarandFan on November 18, 2009 at 5:31 PM

Interesting… very interesting. Back in the 1970s Mao Tse Tung went out of his way to invite President Richard Nixon to meet him. It was a cordial meeting (and I just saw a video clip of the meeting… which showed Nixon first of all shaking hands then probably in response to someone off camera he gives a very minor bow in acknowledgment). My point here is that President Nixon is the one who opened up relations with China after the 1949 revolution, not President Obambi.

ya2daup on November 18, 2009 at 6:48 PM

Why doesn’t that surprise me? I seem to recall telling Blatant Blueblood that Obambi’s trip to Asia would be an epic fail. Or was it that it’s be chock full of Obamateurisms? Either way, it was predicted to be a joke of a trip. Taxpayers could have been spared the wasted cost of sending him and the logistical apparatus on this trip. At least if he’da stayed home, he could be a few days closer to his Af-Pak solution, or better yet, get a running start on that Jobs Summit. Idgit.
