1500 wait in freezing weather to meet Palin on book tour
posted at 10:55 am on November 18, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
In case anyone needed an example of the drawing power and political energy that Sarah Palin wields, the Detroit Free Press report on the start of her book tour should fill the gap nicely. Despite freezing temperatures, people gathered by the hundreds early this morning to greet Palin in person at a Grand Rapids bookstore. By 5 am, five hundred people stood outside the Barnes & Noble — and two hours later, the numbers had swelled to 1500:
And that’s 4:55 this morning when the thermometer had dipped into the 30s. But the 500 or so people in line didn’t mind the sleepless night or the onset of winter.
“What she represents is what we’re standing in line for,” said Robin Case, 44, of Traverse City, who set up a chair and sleeping bag at 9 p.m. Tuesday to make sure she got the chance to meet Sarah Palin, former Alaska Governor and vice presidential candidate. “She’s real and she’s standing up for what we believe in.”
Palin was scheduled to begin her “Going Rogue” book tour at the Barnes & Noble Booksellers in suburban Grand Rapids.
By 7 a.m., the line had swelled to more than 1,500 people as Barnes & Noble wrapped orange wristbands around Palin fans’ wrists.
Most authors would be pleased to get 1500 people in total to show up for a book tour. (Heck, most authors would kill to sell 1500 books.) Even the Lord of the Rings openings didn’t attract 1500 fans for a 7 am show. Star Wars didn’t get this kind of response. And if Massachusetts is any indicator, not even Barack Obama can pack a house like this any more.
Sarah Palin is a phenomenon, and the release of her book proves it. Even the media that loves to deride her has spent the past few days obsessing over her — so much so that Jamie Weinstein wonders whether the media knows that there are other stories to cover. We didn’t see anything like this when Ted Kennedy’s memoirs were published posthumously, nor when the Clinton memoirs came out.
Yesterday, I spoke with NPR’s Mara Liasson about the Palin phenomenon. Liasson asked me about Palin’s prospects in 2012, but I responded that the 2010 midterms would be the first indicator of what Palin intends:
Meanwhile, Morrissey thinks she is right to focus on electing Republicans in 2010. Endorsing candidates, raising money and energizing the party base will give Palin a big platform and a way to showcase her clout inside the GOP.
“What will be telling for Sarah Palin is what kind of impact she’s going to have on the midterm elections — where she’s helpful, where she’s not helpful,” he says.
“I think that will give us all a much better idea of where Sarah Palin can go in 2012 or in 2016 or in 2020,” Morrissey says.
The momentum of the book sales takes Palin right into the 2010 primaries. Where will she campaign, and for whom? Will Palin drive turnout? Will she stick with safe, conservative districts, or attempt to lock horns in swing districts? That will be a key to see where Palin sees herself on the political stage and what ambitions she might have for the future.

Okay. I will accept it as read, then, that any person on earth who does a book tour and makes talk show appearances is “only in it for themselves.” That includes a vast number of your preferred politicians, I would imagine, including our current POTUS.

The simple fact that our country elected an unexperienced lawyer representing the far left elites who has preceeded to completely fumble every ball handed him, makes Sarah or anyone else who wants to run a completely viable candidate who would represent the people. Obviously no experience needed to run America, while Sarah has 100 fold more experience than the current fumbling azz-clown, and the will to represent middle-America to boot.

The GOP brain trust know exactly what Sarah Palin represents and are as terrified of her as the left. They know she will upset the status quo, already has, and their little game will be over. The Scotsafava fiasco proved their lack of concern for our country. Thank God for Sarah Palin, a woman of substance. I plan to stand in line when she comes to Texas, not because I’m a blind cult member, but because, like the rest of her fans, I realize how much our country needs a leader with integrity and courage. God bless Sarah Palin.

If people trust sarah palin, why is 40% of the voting public doubtful that she could even be considered a legitimate presidential candidate, let alone the best? My original question, as its been for some time, is ‘How does Sarah Palin convince the significant bloc of doubters that she’s even a legit candidate?’
It seems to me that if people trusted her in the manner you describe, she wouldn’t have that significant obstacle to overcome. I understand that if your environment is largely politically savvy conservatives, that she seems like a universally trusted and admired figure…but she is most certainly not, when the entire electorate is factored in.

One additional thought behind the phenomenon of Sarah Palin-She’s pulling out and poking holes into every Democrat argument used for their agenda. This will serve the conservatives well during the elections. It will be the same tired failed policy arguments from the Dems that is obviously not working so far.
Unemployment will rise and more will be exposed about the failure of this administration to do much of anything beneficial for Americans. The public will have had enough of their excuses. We see the onset of that already in the polling. We will probably see Palin pound home the fact that– the Dems could pass any legislation they wanted and look what they gave us– as we move closer to the elections. Unintended consequences of nannystate govt always gets my attention. How will the Dems policies affect me and my family? We need our talking heads and representatives to be prepared with fresh conservative policy solutions and a way to get those ideas across to the public.

Step 1: Be Sarah Palin, one of the most hated and beloved individuals on the political scene. Be a person who is exactly what she says she is — you betcha!
Step 2: Write a book composed equally of personal recollections and personal political philosophy, get it published, and have the publisher position it in nationwide book stores. [Something I can honestly say I don't think you've ever done.]
Step 3: Go on a nationwide book-signing tour, where you meet literally hundreds of thousands. If you speak a little bit before each signing, your words make it into local newscasts.
Step 4: Appear on nationwide TV touting your book and the words it contains. Ignore any attempts by the hosts to steer the conversation away from the content in your book.
Step 5: Start a PAC, and throw PAC money at candidates who share your philosophy.
Step 6: Tell Olbermann you don’t have teabags, but he does, and you aren’t having any of his.
Actually, I doubt Step 6 is anything Palin will do, but it sure felt good writing it.

That may be a nice beginning for a candidate with no national exposure…but Palin’s already run a national campaign…she’s not an entirely unknown quantity. If the answer to my question is basically, ‘do what she’s doing right now’…why is there a gap in the first place?

Well, she was on a losing ticket. Pretty much anyone on a losing ticket has to make their case again to voters the next time round. Being on the bottom half of the ticket also means that not only do you have to sell your party’s ideas (when they lost the last election) but you have to be able to demonstrate why you are deserving of the top spot this time.
Also, she was the target of an unprecedented slander campaign. Even liberals who do not support her politics at all can recognize that, and the impact it has had.
Lastly, she was basically an unknown at the time she was tapped for VP. Other candidates have spent manym ore years in the public eye.
So yes, she has a ways to go. But the fact that there is a gap – given what has transpired – is not in itself significant, imho.
Missy on November 18, 2009 at 12:28 PM

Anyone who writes a book, whether it’s nonfiction or a novel, will take any and every opportunity to promote it. There’s nothing remotely unsavory about doing so. I wish I could afford to self-promote my novels more, myself.
If you write a book, and there are a sufficient number of people who are willing to pay money to buy it that you make money from the sales, I believe that’s called, um, capitalism.
I’m for it!
bamaconservative on November 18, 2009 at 12:29 PM
The left in general and the self-centered political class on the right have completely misunderstood Palin’s appeal. Regular people don’t identify with a Biden, McConnell, Hoyer, or even Boehner. They don’t trust Couric or Brian Williams, they don’t watch CNN, and they think Kos is nuts. They think all these personal attacks by either side (but primarily the left) are the product of those who don’t have a serious answer to anything, and have to resort to insults instead. They really believe that those who “think they know better” don’t represent the populace any more, and that replacing them with people who do is a good idea.
That’s where the appeal of Palin comes in. She does not represent the worst part of American politics: the “elites.” She speaks plainly, in terms that real people understand. She has the same views that the folks have. And she doesn’t have “ideas” for the country that are guaranteed to break the bank.
I’m not saying Palin is The One to save the country… but someone with her approach to politics is what’s needed to counter the unbelievable arrogance of those who pass themselves off as “politicians” these days.

Palin worship is roughly on par with Obama worship. Why reason with it? I think she’s un-electable. But would i vote for her in a primary? Perhaps. Depending on the circumstances and who else is running. Would she ever win president? I don’t think so.
Then again, I said immediately after the campaign she’ll never run for anything again. Trig is going to be 4. Starting school. With Downs syndrome. I don’t think you could reasonably expect her to run a national campaign on top of that.

beachgirlusa on November 18, 2009 at 12:35 PM
Why?
MarkTheGreat on November 18, 2009 at 12:36 PM
I’ve always thought on-line bloggers underestimate real people a lot. Normal people knew she had to be pretty much of a talking head for McCain. They also knew she was plucked out of a small state and tossed onto national stage. There were bound to be some bumps.
She’s got 3 years here, with a dynamite headstart. As far as her credibility goes? That’s up to her and her own true nature. She likes digging into topics, from the evidence of her work with energy in Alaska. She’s not afraid of hard work on policy issues, obviously.
So she’ll get plenty of opportunities to discuss things now.
As for determining qualifications, I’ve always said that rests with voters. Candidates make their case. Voters vote. The one who wins is, by definition, qualified in voters’ minds.
I happen to agree with Bill Clinton on that issue. Nobody is actually prepared to be president. The question is far more a case of what are the policies to be implemented and are they realistic? Do they actually add value to our lives or not?
Half of my own disagreement with Obama isn’t over the vague policy statements. I am probably like a lot of people. Yeah, I want to see healthcare addressed.
However, what has emerged is an administrative nightmare, and I don’t think people have even yet totally absorbed how bad it’s going to be.
But a lot of us know full well how programs really work and what all goes wrong.
This one is a disaster in waiting.
So, at the end of the day, who will be viewed more credible? Not this administration unless they smarten up about how to really roll out programs. Biden is on the apology tour now over the snafus in the stimulus spending.
They won’t get too many more chances in this economy.

The media and others sought to demonize Palin. Now that the public is getting a second look at her, on her terms without the confines of her office, they can see her humanity. They can also see that she is articulate and intelligent. This is not the Palin they were told about by the media and Dems. All this is going on while unemployment rises, the misuse of recovery funds is exposed, Obama diddles on Afghanistan, and bows down to other countries. Everything the Dems said during the campaign is being exposed as fraudulent. Palin does not have to run for office. She’s doing enough just being out there.

As for those who are obviously “hating” on someone who is obviously smarter then they are…. get over it. I don’t see you churning out a book or anything else that would garner you to complain about someone else making money!

Thanks for posting this. I was debating whether I was going to spend the night in the parking lot or not the night before she’s supposed to be here for a signing; I guess I will!
There’s really no reason that I can see that people should think she’s not qualified. I think the reason the polls indicate that they don’t (to the extent these pollsters are sampling accurately; in some cases, it’s clear they aren’t doing that) is that heretofore the narrative on Palin has been controlled by someone else: First the McCain campaign, then the MSM and left-wing blogosphere. She obviously speaks to this all in her book, noting her frustration at trying to correct the record and either being accused of “going rogue” or being so hamstrung by bogus ethics charges that she couldn’t even reasonably perform her duties as governor.
I’m not here to tell you she is perfect and has nothing to prove. She’s still new to all of this and there are still some rough edges that need to be buffed out, but I think she’s working on those things and over time, as people have more and more exposure to her, I think they will grow more comfortable with her. She’s not the big scary snake-wrangling moron that the media has portrayed her to be. As Americans learn more about her record and her position on certain issues, they will find she’s pretty mainstream and in line with many of their own views. What is controversial about what she believes? She’s pro-life, pro-gun, pro-liberty and pro-America. These are values many Americans hold dear. She has a decade and half worth of experience in public office so she is not some neophyte to politics (tho she is new to the national stage). I will admit that it will be a challenge to overcome the quitter meme with some people, but she needs to just keep calmly restating her reasons for stepping down; they are perfectly reasonable.

Insecure some? Try pissed off beyond words. In a just world Obama would be dragged from the White House, tarred, feathered, and driven out of DC (along with his racist fat-assed wife).

Get over yourself; you sound like a pompous prat. Trying to use facts, reason, and logic and a bunch of true believers makes you a far bigger fool than I.
