1500 wait in freezing weather to meet Palin on book tour

posted at 10:55 am on November 18, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

In case anyone needed an example of the drawing power and political energy that Sarah Palin wields, the Detroit Free Press report on the start of her book tour should fill the gap nicely.  Despite freezing temperatures, people gathered by the hundreds early this morning to greet Palin in person at a Grand Rapids bookstore.  By 5 am, five hundred people stood outside the Barnes & Noble — and two hours later, the numbers had swelled to 1500:

And that’s 4:55 this morning when the thermometer had dipped into the 30s. But the 500 or so people in line didn’t mind the sleepless night or the onset of winter.

“What she represents is what we’re standing in line for,” said Robin Case, 44, of Traverse City, who set up a chair and sleeping bag at 9 p.m. Tuesday to make sure she got the chance to meet Sarah Palin, former Alaska Governor and vice presidential candidate. “She’s real and she’s standing up for what we believe in.”

Palin was scheduled to begin her “Going Rogue” book tour at the Barnes & Noble Booksellers in suburban Grand Rapids.

By 7 a.m., the line had swelled to more than 1,500 people as Barnes & Noble wrapped orange wristbands around Palin fans’ wrists.

Most authors would be pleased to get 1500 people in total to show up for a book tour.  (Heck, most authors would kill to sell 1500 books.)  Even the Lord of the Rings openings didn’t attract 1500 fans for a 7 am show.  Star Wars didn’t get this kind of response.  And if Massachusetts is any indicator, not even Barack Obama can pack a house like this any more.

Sarah Palin is a phenomenon, and the release of her book proves it.  Even the media that loves to deride her has spent the past few days obsessing over her — so much so that Jamie Weinstein wonders whether the media knows that there are other stories to cover.  We didn’t see anything like this when Ted Kennedy’s memoirs were published posthumously, nor when the Clinton memoirs came out.

Yesterday, I spoke with NPR’s Mara Liasson about the Palin phenomenon.  Liasson asked me about Palin’s prospects in 2012, but I responded that the 2010 midterms would be the first indicator of what Palin intends:

Meanwhile, Morrissey thinks she is right to focus on electing Republicans in 2010. Endorsing candidates, raising money and energizing the party base will give Palin a big platform and a way to showcase her clout inside the GOP.

“What will be telling for Sarah Palin is what kind of impact she’s going to have on the midterm elections — where she’s helpful, where she’s not helpful,” he says.

“I think that will give us all a much better idea of where Sarah Palin can go in 2012 or in 2016 or in 2020,” Morrissey says.

The momentum of the book sales takes Palin right into the 2010 primaries.  Where will she campaign, and for whom?  Will Palin drive turnout?  Will she stick with safe, conservative districts, or attempt to lock horns in swing districts?  That will be a key to see where Palin sees herself on the political stage and what ambitions she might have for the future.

We didn’t see anything like this when Ted Kennedy’s memoirs were published posthumously, nor when the Clinton memoirs came out.

I don’t know, Ted Kennedy doing a posthumous book tour probably would have brought out crowds- if nothing else just to make sure the bastard was dead!

Seriously, I’m not Palin’s biggest fan but I’m getting tired of terms like phenomenon being used. Other than being a former governor, I believe what makes Sarah Palin so popular is not some fluke but the fact that she is a public figure to whom most Americans (conservatives in flyover anyway) can relate. She’s one of us.

What is phenomenonal is that DC has become so deaf to the concerns of ordinary Americans that they don’t get why people are willing to spend all night lined up outside the Woodland Mall to get a chance to meet her.

Obama is a celebrity. That doesn’t mean he should be POTUS, though. Far from it.

Moesart on November 18, 2009 at 11:06 AM

Sarah Palin has her run of the board right now. She has freedom of movement to conduct standoff, deep strike attacks upon the statist liberal agenda. She will selectively pick principled and bloody knife-fights which she can capitalize on her freedom of movement afforded her by her resignation. Her target, Obama, is frozen in the White House. He is busy and she can thump him at will. Moreover, he provides her with a daily full combat load of ammunition with which to do it. Obama’s ammo? Well, 11 AP reporters are trying to comb through her book to see if they can scratch up a round or two to use against her. Her advantage? She has withered the 2008 Alaska Lawyer Invasion as well as attacks on multiple fronts from every aspect of the print and television media. The result? She’s stronger and people are waiting for hours in the cold to see her. Obama? Well, we’re just always going to be in the cold…. thanks to cap and trade, which takes us back to sarah palin.

The way the story ends you ask? I’ll tell you….like this, “I Sarah Heath Palin, do solemnly swear to support and defend the Constitution of the United States, against ALL enemies, foreign AND domestic….”

Oaths.

ted c on November 18, 2009 at 11:06 AM

I cannot believe the number of people who call themselves “conservatives” are reluctant to go all-in for Sarah if she ran for POTUS.

Really?? You would feel better about the Huckster, Romney or Jindal???!! What are your other options?

AND…..after the disaster you’re experiencing first hand with this piece of sh*t, spineless, man-child, US historically-deficit turd now occupying the White House, you can’t decide if having Palin in charge would be a good thing? Maybe you’re part of the problem.

I would vote for a Bachmann-Palin/Palin-Bachmann ticket ANYDAY and be proud to do so.

It’s fascinating to see the conflict between the punditry and people, isn’t it?

They are doing story after story about how the book roll-out is “disastrous.” Meanwhile, back in the real world, people sleep overnight in line to get a spot for her autograph.

It’s rather funny to see the schizoid nature of this.

AnninCA on November 18, 2009 at 11:07 AM

Anyway, freezing weather. Sounds like Gore was giving a climate change speech next door.

Dongemaharu on November 18, 2009 at 11:07 AM

She is doing a great service for the right by being willing to state the sometimes obvious criticisms of the Obama administration that others are afraid to mention, and by articulating positions and solutions to core problems that, again, others are too timid to push. By doing this she draws ridicule and blathering hate-filled responses from the supposed elite political and media leadership. All of this fits nicely with the fact that what the Obama-Pelosi-Reid gang is doing is obviously hurting the country. Together these factors will help the independent voters see the left-controlled democratic party for what it is, which will contribute to throwing many of those bums out in November 2010.

It’s so much more than merely her earthly appeal that attracts people to her. It’s an appeal that’s infinitely higher than what can be seen. It’s the power of Truth that’s irresistable to those who can see it.

Nalea on November 18, 2009 at 11:07 AM

People who wait in line in that kind of weather, that early in the morning are the same people who would canvass areas, campaign, volunteer, donate to a national campaign or any campaign Palin supports.

I love the fact that the first people in line that started at 9pm the night before were 3 18 year old women.

She fascinates, like Hillary. She gets a huge turnout, like Hillary.

Like Hillary, she is a woman scorned. As she becomes the Fighting Lady of the North, more and more women will warm to her. The one thing she won’t do is back down. As long as she doesn’t back down, she’ll keep Hillary’s cachet.

Note to Ed: have you noticed that Obama is starting to talk about deficits? Lighting has struck on the way to Damascus. Prediction: as Palin’s popularity increases, the incentive for Obama to throw Pelosi and Reid under the bus and become a Deficit Hawk will increase. He needs to be called out on this.

Freedom and Liberty create a vacuum all their own when they are de-emphasized. The Won won’t speak of them, won’t protect them, won’t even encourage them.

Sarah Palin, on the other hand, proclaims them and helps fill that vacuum. THAT is why people are waiting in the cold to see her. They are filling the void that Obama is creating.

Kind of like the void in your bank account, your pay check, our morals, our justice system, our national defense, our international diplomacy, our congress, etc..etc..

Palin would never allow a GOP grab bag on the order of Porkulus and then spend months defending it in the face of reporting that its job-creation claims are “wildly exaggerated.”

Palin would never waste most of her political capital on a version of healthcare reform that will tank our country.

Palin would never allow the continued hand-cuffing of our energy policy (no drilling, no nuclear plants, you name)–at least not without a fight.

Palin would never humiliate us overseas.

Palin would never pick her nose on war while trying to figure out what her base wants.

Palin would never close Gitmo, and she’d never allow her AG to try terrorists in SDNY.

The list could go on.

I’d rather see her as the new face of the Republican party. Why not exploit her influence instead of giving it up in a national campaign?

I’d love to see her as RNC chair, going toe to toe with the Dems and holding the purse strings for congressional seats.

The Hillary Rodham Clinton publicity whirlwind blew through Harvard Square yesterday, and an efficient, well-orchestrated, even presidential-caliber operation it was.

Some order was in order, given that Clinton devotees had begun lining up outside the Charles Hotel in Harvard Square as early as 6 a.m., hoping for a special moment with her during a visit to promote her new memoir, ”Living History.”

By noon, when Clinton was scheduled to appear, a large ballroom at the hotel was crammed with eager men and women, and hundreds more stood in a queue downstairs that snaked through the hotel’s courtyard and down a brick alleyway, almost all the way to the Charles River.

In all, about 1,200 people came out to see Clinton. The event attracted a wide range of ages and ethnicities and almost as many women as men.

katiejane on November 18, 2009 at 11:19 AM

And time and time again we’re told that she’s the GOP’s last hope, the only woman for the job! That she’s such a gifted policy maker, that she’s a great leader, that she’s what this country needs!

Question to RNC: Is this person really irrelevant?

DrStock on November 18, 2009 at 10:58 AM

To the RNC leadership Palin is irrelevant because she doesn’t pass the “electability” litmus test which, essentially, means somebody who doesn’t have all those inconvenient social conservative viewpoints that get in the way of branding the GOP as Democrats with a cooler mascot.

What Palin really represents is the rift between people like John McCain and the real Republican base. She is relevant, if for no other reason, because she is the face of the dispute that is just under the surface.

Ed not sure why you had to drag the Clintons into it for comparisons, this is a former VEEP candidate getting a very nice crowd

Hillary was a former FIRST LADY at the time of her memoir and she got thousands too

Sarah is a star by herself
so is Hillary

I think they both rawk

She will lock horns. I’m reading the book now and getting a better feel for her–yeah, she’ll lock horns.

Go Sarah Go..kick some libbies butt.

hawkman on November 18, 2009 at 11:22 AM

All the talk about Sarah’s credibility is premature, in my opinion. The left is having to trot out really old “lies” to bolster their attack on her this time around. There just isn’t any meat on their criticisms.

Every interview she does where she’s at ease diminishes people’s negativity and makes them wonder a bit about that Couric interview.

And she’s got plenty of time. 3 years is a long, long time.

From a strategic standpoint, I think she’s absolutely handled the post-election period smartly. Stay low. Build up a thirst. Then kaboom, with the book. That’s just smart.

Plus, it’s fun.

AnninCA on November 18, 2009 at 11:23 AM

I cannot believe the number of people who call themselves “conservatives” are reluctant to go all-in for Sarah if she ran for POTUS.

Really?? You would feel better about the Huckster, Romney or Jindal???!! What are your other options?

Flyboy on November 18, 2009 at 11:06 AM

I reluctantly have to agree with you. Besides the snowbilly and Ron Paul, the other choices are all a bunch of idiot RINOs.

All I can do is hope that Miss HopeNChange keeps her promises better than the thumb-sucking, dropout-fanbase Marxist we elected last time.

Dark-Star on November 18, 2009 at 11:27 AM

I still think the rejection by the Republican elites had a lot more to do with her making the moves she has made over the last year than anything liberals have done.

Palin is smart and fully expected the politics of personal destruction that liberals engage in.
When she stopped being controlled by the McCain campaign and let Sarah be Sarah, she was successful against them.
The good job she did against Biden in the Vice Presidential debates is proof of this with Biden being the one to make the gaffes and mistakes, not Palin.

But having the heavy hitters from the Republican party do everything they could to cut her legs out from underneath her probably did make her have to reassess her direction and future plans. This put her in a position of taking more control over her political direction with the freedom to handle things her way, instead of status quo from the Brooks crowd.

Palin resonates with working Americans who want our laws and Constitution to be upheld in decision making on Capital Hill and don’t like the socialist turn that the country is taking.

The elites from the Ivy league crowd that have run America into the dirt are losing credibility with every lost job and every city they control going bankrupt.

Their friends in the MSM are doing everything they can to destroy her before she gains the recognition and credibility to do the elite establishment harm.

Looking at the crashing poll numbers for the elite messiah Obama and the growing interest and crowd numbers for Palin, it looks like the public does not believe the press or the liberal heroes they cheer for.

Time for the Republican party to quit backing the Scozzafava’s and start backing the Saracudda’s.

I was talking to my wife about this yesterday. She doesn’t understand American politics as much as I do (she is from Poland) and she asked me almost that exact question last night. The best I could tell her is that Palin represents everything that is wrong with America (according to our betters.) She is a normal woman who worked hard to reach her goals. She has never claimed to be a victim, never doubted her faith, and had the audacity to have a child who is not normal. Using normal liberal thinking she should be an uneducated meth addict with 8 kids on welfare since she has never embraced their ways to enlightenment. Thistype of bloviating will continue until the pundits realize that people like Palin and will vote for her because they identify with her. If her popularity gets over 60% they will jump on the bandwagon and sing of her virtues.

She is the only one in the GOP who could match Obama in starpower and intensity.

Most of the GOP contenders for 2012 is releasing books ahead of the primary. How many people will line up for Romney’s book? For Huckabee’s?

Norwegian on November 18, 2009 at 11:28 AM

Palin hatred is the top commodity in America today. People really need to get a life.

She’s never anything but relentlessly positive and upbeat. All her detractors are foaming at the mouth, wild-eyed with rage, consumed with anger.

Very, very unhappy people.

How sad.

JammieWearingFool on November 18, 2009 at 11:30 AM

She may not run 2012, but she will be king-maker in 2010 and 2012.

phreshone on November 18, 2009 at 11:30 AM

I’ve watched her interviews. I always thought that Couric and Gibson set her up. My opinion was that she wasn’t prepared for such a lack of goodwill and the gotcha questions. She let her emotions trip her.

John had the same problem on the View. He wasn’t prepared for the attack.

I always thought that it took John way too long to figure out that the media didn’t find him charming. They blew the media management aspect of the campaign. They started off with a false assumption, that he was well liked.

These interviews she’s doing show a much more centered person. She’s prepared for the gotcha stuff and, in my opinion, giving the right answers. Schmidt think she’d be a disaster? OK, then respond with, “Well, I obviously disappointed him, I guess.” LOL*

(That was a really good one!)
