Taxes knock out Pacquiao-Mayweather bout … from NY, NJ

posted at 3:35 pm on November 17, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

You don’t have to be a boxing fan to understand the uppercut that high state taxes gave to an opportunity for a big sports event in New York and New Jersey.  Newsday reports on the decision by promoter Bob Arum to pursue a highly-sought bout between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather in Jerry Jones’ new football stadium in Texas instead of Yankee Stadium or the Meadowlands.  What KO’d the East Coast?  High state taxes:

It appears the Tax Man is about to do to Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. what Oscar de la Hoya, Ricky Hatton and Miguel Cotto could not.

Namely, knock both of them out.

Out of New York, that is. And New Jersey, too. …

But last night, Arum dropped the hammer on the fight taking place anywhere east of the Mississippi River.

“No chance,” Arum said. “Nothing would please me more than to have it at Yankee Stadium, but the way the tax structure in New York is set up, it’s impossible.”

But that’s not the worst news. The front-runner to host the bout, proposed for early May or June 2010, is – gulp! – Cowboys Stadium, Jerry Jones’ $1 billion-plus, retractable-roof football palace that makes Yankee Stadium look like a sandlot.

There’s nothing terribly surprising about this, although tri-state sports fans have already begun to howl over Arum’s courtship with Jerry Jones.  The Cowboys are the hated rivals of the New York Giants, and Jones the embodiment of all their animus.  Losing the biggest fight of the year — and perhaps the decade — to Jones would be akin to having Eli Manning starting for the Cowboys next season.

Put simply, producers in any industry will locate where their costs become lowest while maintaining their ability to produce.  A boxing match can be staged anywhere, as most of the revenue comes from television contracts.  However, big sporting events generate a lot of business for the city in which it is staged, which is why cities try so hard to land them (although, as with the Olympics, there are also cost considerations that might make it advisable for cities to take a pass).  The more portable the activity, the more likely it is for the business to find the best financial setting, and taxes play a big part in that calculation.

Missing one big boxing match won’t break the East Coast, but it should send a lesson to voters in that area.  It will certainly send a lesson to Texans when they benefit from the tax policies of New York and New Jersey.

Chances are, the fight, if it gets made, will end up in Vegas. A stadium sized gate is one thing, but you can get the same thing with closed circuit buys. Arum did that last weekend with Pacquiao/Cotto and sold upwards of 14k tickets just to see it on closed circuit at the conference center and other venues. Add that to the 16k heads in the MGM Grand and you are already approaching a stadium gate.

Fight weekends create huge business (gambling, shows, etc.) in Vegas. They won’t let Pac/Mayweather go with out a fight of their own.

New Yorkers will laugh dirisively at the money Arum is losing by not coming to NY.

Arum, meanwhile, will count the large stacks of money that he gets to keep, instead of paying it out in taxes.

Now, in the old world, one of those viewpoints is an opinion, while the other will be a fact. But not in the Age of Obama.

Limbaugh said he wished $13,000 a day was all he had to pay.

There is something definitely wrong with the system when people have to pay such obscene amounts of money to the government to conduct business.

I also hear them complaing that their roads are in terrible shape, including the interstate. Those pretty little towns and villages and small cities have many empty or dilapidated store fronts and other signs of neglect. Where is all this tax money going? It isn’t being spent on these folks I would guess.

That’s because they don’t WANT to. Libs operate in the way that the world should conform to their limited view. Expanding their minds, in a true sense, is not an option for them.

Watch how they dig in their heels on an issue no matter the evidence, then they change the subject. Or call you a vile name. Or accuse otherwise.

It’s fruitless to try reasoning with a lib. Best, for your own peace of mind, to let them wallow in their own ignorance.

Boxing has sucked for so long that this fight might be it’s one last gasp. Depending on how things go there could be a rematch, who knows. I can’t see any MMA fights because those all take place in Vegas.

At the same time, I want my area to suffer. I think the only way to get through to the thick skulls of voters here is to take their fun away. You do that and the prestige of living here can no longer feed the superiority complex. Once they can’t brag about how what a great place they live in they may finally start realizing they are broke and their Government has jsut wasted all of their money.

Folks in Texas are sensitive about a lot of things it seems. I made sure to say Irving back in 2003 when I went to see a Cowboys game but I was ready to knock out this other guy sitting behind me who demanded my brother and I stand up when Toby Keith started to sing a certain song during halftime. I had no idea who the guy was and was not about to stand up for him, so I just laughed at him, stayed seated and told my brother to do the same. I have to admit I did stand up afterwards because Toby Keith, who I now like as an artist, sang one of the most patriotic songs I heard at a sporting event besides the National Anthem.

Still, that D-bag behind me didn’t need to be so damn aggressive with those around him.

Mayweather beat DLH@154 (DLH wouldn’t fight him @147), which isn’t really the case because DLH weighed more than that the night of the fight, and PBF weighed less.

MP fought DLH@147 after he had already been beaten by PBF, and if you couldn’t see how emaciated DLH was against MP, you’re blind.

People may think PBF can’t beat MP, but didn’t people also believe that Holyfield had no shot at beating Tyson? I choose to go with the better boxer in this case.

Of course, we’re free to our opinions, and I happen to believe PBF will beat MP by TKO by the 11th. We’ll just have to wait and see who’s right on fight night, eh? :)
