Quotes of the day

posted at 10:37 pm on November 17, 2009 by Allahpundit

“’That was a mistake,’ Palin says of the Obama bow. ‘It was symbolic of, perhaps, our country being led to believe that we are subservient to other countries.’ She says she would ‘like to see us head more in the direction of Ronald Reagan’s thinking — knowing that we are a very, very blessed nation and a superpower.’ She adds, ‘We can get there through a position of strength and not believing that we have to kowtow or bow to anybody.’ Asked if she would have bowed, she replies, ‘No, sir.’”

***
“My actual beef is that the crap Obama is doing is irrelevant. No one gives a flying f**k if you bow to them, or you say nice things about ‘working together to reach our collective goals,’ or this ridiculous conceit that just because of Obama’s ‘personal presence’ — a historic presidency, drenched in drama, topped with butter-baked crumbs of hope — is going to make a lick of difference. Nations pursue their own policy goals — period. You change the goals a nation might pursue by offering carrots and sticks, by buying them off or making it so costly to pursue a particular goal they refrain from doing so…

“So my point, then, is that what Obama is doing is perfectly trivial, and to get all outraged about it actually invests his empty and feckless symbolism with a power it doesn’t have. Obama’s bowing to a Saudi king does nothing to improve our relations with the Islamic world. And neither, frankly, does Cheney shaking his hand as an equal. Neither matters — and the problem here is that Obama is convinced these things not only matter, but are well-nigh determinative.

“This malignant narcissist thinks that nations will change their fundamental national goals based simply on the (purported) fact that Obama is charming, nice, and awesome

“He is indulging in fantasy at the expense of reality, and therefore at the expense of US national interests.”

***
“In less than a month, President Obama will step onto a stage in Oslo, Norway, to accept the Nobel Peace Prize.

“If Mr. Obama hoped that his week-long four-country visit to Asia, his first as president, would yield concrete accomplishments that might silence critics skeptical that he deserves that prize, he might be disappointed.

“Though White House aides insist the president’s trip was mainly to reassert a US presence in Asian diplomacy, and that his itinerary set no expectations for major feats, the president has heard disappointing news in the past few days.”

I love Ace, I read him every damn day, but I don’t think he is right on his take here. I usually agree with him 90-95% of the time. First, I know relatively non-political people that visceral react to the bow. It’s not just a blog thing. And second, it’s not a replacement for policy, either. It’s just that his agenda currently is focused domestically.

I don’t spend much time on Ace’s blog anymore since he threw his hissy fit on july 3rd. And stated he thought his readers lived in a fantasy world. That kind of disrespect to his readers was just over the line. and nothing I have seen since then has told me Ace is anymore than a person that will always put winning above principles. Just my view.

I’m surprised that this wasn’t a quote:

I also asked Governor Palin about Attorney General Holder’s decision to try September 11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohamed in federal court in New York City.

“Does KSM deserve constitutional rights?” I asked.

Palin’s response: “Not no, but hell no.”

She also said on Barbara Walter’s clip on World News Tonight that Obama’s tactics on improving the economy and jobs is “back asswards.” It made Wawa gasp.

Enoxo on November 17, 2009 at 10:49 PM

It wouldn’t be a Palin interview without asking about “death panels.” How did she come up with the phrase? “To me, while reading that section of the bill, it became so evident that there would be a panel of bureaucrats who would decide on levels of health care, decide on those who are worthy or not worthy of receiving some government-controlled coverage,” she explains. “Since health care would have to be rationed if it were promised to everyone, it would therefore lead to harm for many individuals not able to receive the government care. That leads, of course, to death.”

“The term I used to describe the panel making these decisions should not be taken literally,” says Palin. The phrase is “a lot like when President Reagan used to refer to the Soviet Union as the ‘evil empire.’ He got his point across. He got people thinking and researching what he was talking about. It was quite effective. Same thing with the ‘death panels.’ I would characterize them like that again, in a heartbeat.”

Via Ace:

Now, all that said, all that acknowledgement that maybe this is a “blog issue,” as Greg Gutfeld said, let me note again something that makes it not just a “blog issue” at all: Obama lied. Gibbs lied. White House sources lie. They all denied down the line that they were offering a sycophantic servility — bowing like an inferior — to royalty, and they now are forced to admit it was a lie all along.

From Ace’s post:

Greg Gutfeld (was up late last night) noted the bowing controversy and called it, using Andy Levy’s phrase, a “blog issue.” By which he meant a topic that gets predictable heat on blogs, but when you try to discuss it in the “real world,” the reaction is “ehhh.”

It wasn’t too long ago that this wouldn’t be the case. I’m not liking the direction this nation is going in generally. Not at all.

Ace is spot-on with his assessment…the bowing controversy showed Obama did lie about the Saudi king bow. But why? Apparently he did so for whatever reasons of “diplomacy”, why not admit it then?

But nobody wants to know him,

And he never gives an answer,

But the fool on the hill,

See the world spinning ’round.

Well on the way,
Head in a cloud,
The man of a thousand voices talking perfectly loud
But nobody ever hear him,

from the Tapper piece, here’s Obama’s hardline stand for human rights in China:

Asked how President Obama pressed the issue of human rights, Bader told ABC News that the US is most “persuasive if we have our own house in order.”

President Obama’s presidential order to close the detainee center at Guantanamo Bay is an example of how he is working hard “to correct and improve the image of the United States on human rights,” Bader said, which makes his appeals to China more impactful than when the “salesman is not persuasive.” The president told China how the US has been strengthened by such values, Bader said.

China has 800B of treasuries and 300B of MBS and a prez that has to close GITMO before he talks about human rights

but Palin was not quailified to be VP:

Al Gore on Conan O’Brien’s show the other day:

Conan: Now, what about … you talk in the book about geothermal energy …
Al: Yeah, yeah.
Conan: and that is, as I understand it, using the heat that’s generated from the core of the earth …
Al: Yeah.
Conan: … to create energy, and it sounds to me like an evil plan by Lex Luthor to defeat Superman. Can you, can you tell me, is this a viable solution, geothermal energy?
Al: It definitely is, and it’s a relatively new one. People think about geothermal energy — when they think about it at all — in terms of the hot water bubbling up in some places, but two kilometers or so down in most places there are these incredibly hot rocks, ’cause the interior of the earth is extremely hot, several million degrees, and the crust of the earth is hot …
[Me] The geothermal gradient is usually quoted as 25–50 degrees Celsius per mile of depth in normal terrain (not, e.g., in the crater of Kilauea). Two kilometers down, therefore, (that’s a mile and a quarter if you’re not as science-y as Al) you’ll have an average gain of 30–60 degrees — exploitable for things like home heating, though not hot enough to make a nice pot of tea. The temperature at the earth’s core, 4,000 miles down, is usually quoted as 5,000 degrees Celsius, though these guys claim it’s much less, while some contrarian geophysicists have posted claims up to 9,000 degrees. The temperature at the surface of the Sun is around 6,000 degrees Celsius, while at the center, where nuclear fusion is going on bigtime, things get up over 10 million degrees.

If the temperature anywhere inside the earth was “several million degrees,” we’d be a star.

Obama’s bowing to a Saudi king does nothing to improve our relations with the Islamic world. And neither, frankly, does Cheney shaking his hand as an equal.

A bow creates drama, draws attention to the person doing it, and opens up discussions of speculation on what his intent actually was. Governing America is serious business. We don’t have time for this nonsense, Mr. Dither. Darth got that, Cuda gets that…now shake a person’s hand and move along sir!
While I’m in my no more nonsense mood
Are you kidding me about Dithers wasting more of our time with on his Peace Prize? He had 71 vehicles for his Asia road trip…someone needs to take the keys away from him, explain where the Oval Office is and that he needs to sit his butt down and try doing his job! Enough!

This is irrelevant in every possible way, yet here you are desperately trying to make it relevant. And I need to grow up?

Surely you can’t be serious. You have a gift for erroneous extrapolation that, in this instance, will make itself very apparent as time goes by.

I love Ace, I read him every damn day, but I don’t think he is right on his take here. I usually agree with him 90-95% of the time. First, I know relatively non-political people that visceral react to the bow. It’s not just a blog thing.

patriotism is stronger in flyover country where we cling to our GOD, guns and flag. Obama disgraced the USA in japan. He even disgraced the EMperor by conveying an honor on him he did not deserve. He brought shame to japan and the USa and his supporters are too stupid to understand that. talk about the arrogant american.

Obama’s failure to observe American patriotic ceremony, combined with a series of bows indicating obsisance and subservience to foreign heads or state, is a nonverbal declaration that he does not stand for what Americans have stood for over the past 233 years. That’s hardly a trivial matter.

That’s Ma’am to you. Clearly, you are spending a great deal of your time on this bow issue. Do a word count. Night-night.

redwhiteblue on November 17, 2009 at 11:57 PM

more of the things the stupid Obama supporters don’t understand about the BOW:

But President Obama’s bow to the emperor was pretty dumb.

1. His next stop was Singapore (and then Beijing). The Chinese don’t like Japan. The Rape of Nanking (as well as the massacres in a dozen other cities) has pissed them off. Bowing to the head of Imperial Japan was waving the Flag of the Rising Sun in the faces of teh Chinese.

2. His stop after that was Seoul. The Koreans are also still pissed at Japan.

3. Showing signs of any weakness in a time of war emboldens enemies.

So it is not American bluster or pride that is at stake here; it is not showing favoritism to one side in a triangle of mutual suspicion. Koreans also are suspicious of China and with good reason.

Which brings us to China’s concern about Obamacare. The young man has borrowed too much money. The Chinese hold a lot of these markers. They grilled him on Obamacare

“Boilerplate assurances that America won’t default on its debt or inflate the shortfall away are apparently not cutting it. Nor should they, when one owns nearly $2 trillion in assets denominated in the currency of a country about to double its national debt over the next

ernesto on November 17, 2009 at 11:52 PM

nope not when those policies are based on a person’s ability to sale them. Obama has staked his charm on selling Healthcare and to a lesser extent his cap and trade nonsense. If that charm/hubris is gone so is the driving force behind those bills. Its like buying a usedcar once the usedcar dealer is shown to be dishonest/ unworthy it matters not what shape the car is in.

Obama’s handshake/forward lurch was so jarring and inappropriate it recalls Bush’s back-rub of Merkel.

“Kyodo News is running his appropriate and reciprocated nod and shake with the Empress, certainly to show the president as dignified, and not in the form of a first year English teacher trying to impress with Karate Kid-level knowledge of Japanese customs.

“The bow as he performed did not just display weakness in Red State terms, but evoked weakness in Japanese terms….The last thing the Japanese want or need is a weak looking American president and, again, in all ways, he unintentionally played that part.

My theory is that the election of Barack Obama was the crowning moment in the pussification of the USA. We just elected our first Metro-Sexual President. Unfortunately he is representative of the upcoming generation. I would bet that the 52% of the voters that voted for him would also be fans of Sex in the City. I want to puke.
