Palin to Limbaugh: No, America’s not ready for a third party
posted at 4:19 pm on November 17, 2009 by Allahpundit
Her interview with Barbara Walters had more memorable lines — calling the tea-party movement “beautiful,” declining Letterman’s invite because “I don’t think that I’d want to boost his ratings” — but I’m giving you the Limbaugh clip because, well, meat this red simply must be served. If you can’t spare 20 minutes, skip ahead to 6:55 and listen for five as Rush prods her on whether she fancies herself an “unanointed” outsider in the Doug Hoffman mold. This seems like his way of enlisting her to help tamp down the potentially destructive third-party fever being stirred by Beck and other members of the “we can’t trust either party anymore” school. She’s on Limbaugh’s side here, which is all to the good, although she qualifies her answer by emphasizing how she’s a fan of spirited primary battles. Unasked by Rush: Whether a particularly “spirited,” a.k.a. bruising, fight between Crist and Rubio will leave enough Republicans so disgruntled as to suppress GOP turnout in the general election.
Other highlights: She shows off a little knowledge on Afghanistan and Iran at around 17:45 (not sure Reagan, who pulled out of Lebanon, is the best person to cite in this context, though) and finally answers a much-anticipated question on immigration. She’s been suspect on that subject up until now; her brief answer here signals improvement, although I’d have liked to see Rush ask her squarely what she thinks about a path to citizenship given last year’s unfortunate pander to Univision. Exit question: Is this too good to check? The thought of easy blog content in the form of another round of McCain/Palin drama is making my heart go pitter patter. Click the image to listen.

it was from more than one poll this summer, i think PPP had the latest one where she was head and shoulders above everyone else
(and of course, right on cue, a university poll came out with horrible sampling and said “oh no, see, see, palin is the worst with hispanics!”… its unreal how predictable)

Eh, that’s too complicated.
Require a state ID (like a drivers’ license) and proof of residency to rent an apartment for more than 30 days, get a loan, get a job, apply for government benefits, etc.
Where applied, this works.

IF the GOP got it that they need Conservatives in order to win, then why did Eric Cantor recently ask Rush to cool it? The GOP does not get it that they need Conservatives to win. Not only do they need Conservatives, but the GOP must have “broken glass” Conservatives to win. These folks are a must in order to overcome the ACORN fraud, and Lord knows what else the DNC and Soros will have cooked up for 2012.
I heard the entire interview live and she does not sound like a “stupid” or a “joke” of a woman. Mega dittos to the amount of “common sense” she has and THAT is what the American people are craving right now. We just want a simple American who can identify with our daily lives. We want someone who loves this country, and someone we can trust when it comes to dismantling the behemoth federal government. Of all the candidates the GOP might run, to date only Palin, Bachmann, and Jindal would be the ones to take an ax to the federal government.
By the way, I also heard David Frum on Laura Ingraham’s show. Message to all those like David Frum- BITE ME! You can take your Palin hatred and flush your head down the toilet you pompous weasel!

Third party is the surest way to socialism. Look at the European countries with multiple parties…anyone can win with 34% support because of the plethora of narrow-focused parties who may have extreme views on a few hotbutton issues (greens, nationalist, socialist parties).
One of the advantages to a two party system is that it forces each side to address multiple issues and come up with solutions that work for the country, not just one narrow demographic.

I have to disagree. Back in my IT days, i worked with lots of foreign nationals and LEGAL immigrants, people typically on work visas; many were from India. Each year they had to jump through flaming hoops to make sure that their visas were renewed properly and on time. Lots of them took all of their vacation to go back to India to make certain that the paperwork was completed correctly and on time. They do this each and every year. I will tell you that almost to a man they are dead set against giving illegal squatters here a fast track to citizenship. Been here a few years illegally? Willing to pay a small fine to jump to the front of the line over people who have spent time and money trying to stay here legally? Then come on down! You’re the next contestant in Screw Those Who Obey The Law!
I have sympathy for the children born here. As a matter of fact, I understand why so many sneak across the border. Living in squalor in a corrupt country will motivate you. And I’m in favor of increasing the LEGAL immigration to a flood, instead of the trickle that we have now. But there is no way in hell that I’ll ever give a thumbs up to granting law breakers amnesty and a place ahead of those who’ve been working their asses off to do it the right way.
Tell the current illegals that they can go back to their country of origin and wait in line. However, they will automatically go to the back of that line. If they make it to the front legally, well, welcome back. This country will welcome you. Anything else is complete crap.
Physics Geek on November 17, 2009 at 5:10 PM
You don’t have to deport anyone if you enforce the laws as they are. People who are here illegally will leave if they can’t get work.

I was disappointed to hear Michael Medved today going rogue himself, as in criticizing the decision by Palin and others to back Hoffman over DeeDee Scozzafava. Medved even played the clip of Rush and Sarah talking about this. Given that Rush gave Michael Medved his first boost into conservative talk radio (by having Medved guest host his show as a fill in) this is very sad.
Where to begin? I like them all (Medved, Rush and Palin). I am not so hard core in my opinions to miss the wisdom of some of the positions Michael Medved takes, but Mike is missing the boat on this issue. Mike is back to saying, well we lost the NY-23 seat. That is true, but the decision that lost the NY-23 seat was when Scozzafava was picked by the local GOP to run for it. Medved’s point was had Scozzafava won, Nancy Pelosi’s health care bill would have failed. I am not sure that is the case, but that does not justify supporting a “Republican” who supports union card check, may have gone sideways on health care too, and was essentially not a Republican let alone a conservative.
Hoffman, however, was the only chance to win the seat back. And the fact that Scuzzy-Wuzz-She backed Owens (the Democrat) only shows that she was a liar and crypto-democrat from the get.
As you can guess, Michael Medved does not want Sarah Palin to be the GOP nominee. Just like anyone thinking Sarah Palin is the answer to everything wrong in the world is nonsense (friends of a potential candidate can be their worse enemy), so is this opposite position by Medved equally wrong. We should not discourage any potential conservative candidate to avoid primaries, this is a battle of ideas and we want more not less in this process.
Medved also thinks Oprah, Newsweek, and the left are trying to promote Sarah (and also unfairly attack her) in an attempt to have her run and (hopefully) win the 2012 GOP nomination so Obama can then summarily defeat her and get re-elected. Medved would rather Sarah just support GOP candidates and raise money for them and run for something other than president.
Well, I think Sarah did support the conservative candidate in NY-23. That was a good thing. Unfortunately the GOP candidate was not a GOP candidate.
As far as the left’s motives, Medved is probably correct. Newsweek and Oprah are trying to do that. 2012 is still a long way off and whether or not Sarah Palin will even run, let alone win the nominiation, is at this point not really known. But as the Chinese say, the Dems should be careful for what they wish for.
Mr. Joe on November 17, 2009 at 5:12 PM
I’m probably in the minority, but I didn’t like the Limbaugh interview much. He asked a number of policly questions, but they were open-ended. When it comes to those issues, Palin often needs to be prodded to get specific; otherwise she tends to fall back on generalities. I mean, “common sense conservatism” is fine, but at some point you’re going to have to define exactly what it is. Then again, Palin was speaking to her own here, and perhaps figured she doesn’t need to spell it out for those who know what it is. But for the unanointed, that won’t suffice. The foreign policy stuff was good though and i’m sure she eased some suspicions about her position on illegal immigration.
Erich66 on November 17, 2009 at 5:12 PM
As far as I’m concerned on this third party business, I also believe the correct course of action is to clean up the Republican Party.
I’m not even so bent out of shape over the RINO deal, as long as there is a primary process that allows the voters to choose.
For me, Priority Number One(tm) is getting rid of the crooks, criminals, liars, and various other scumbags that currently hold or are seeking office.
I don’t even care if the Dems follow suit. Let them keep their Dodds, Hastings, and Fwanks. Screw ‘em. Let US clean our house, and set the example.
IMHO, Palin is one of the extremly limited number of figures out there that has ANY credibility to push for this issue.

It is time to make a stronger case for stronger enforcement of immigration laws. Those that are so effected by it will be even more open to the argument. These are people that for some reason vote Democrat too often. I think poorer people need to know that it is them who are hit by the negative effects.

There’s alot of work that can be done that’s vitally important before she has to consider running in 2012. The most important is rino hunting because if she manages to be elected President with the current crop of turncoats who did nada to protect George, it will be ugly.
It will be bad enough with willful traitors ( joewilson valerieplame to name a few ) disemboweling a presidency from the left, but having a gutless right not doing anything to protect a true conservative will be fatal.
If she is elected it’s going to make georges term seem like a walk in the park

They’ll get work, even with severe punishments for employers who knowingly hire illegals. Cheap labor is always a great incentive, worth the risk I’m sure.
They won’t be too quick to leave either…whatever keeps them from returning home, usually the knowledge that they might never be allowed back here in the States, is strong enough that returning there is not an option for many of them.
Like you said tho, we’ve had laws on the books for years regarding illegals. There’s no need for new laws when the existing laws go unenforced.
Either way, there has to be…no question…some sort of “path to citizenship”, much like the proposal from McCain. It’s the only viable solution.

This is what I’ve been saying~we don’t want to start a new party:
We need to take the trash out.
We need to flush the toilet.
We need to clean up our party, throw out the RINOS and take back OUR party.
If the RINOS and Squishes want to start their own party, they don’t even need to do that….just follow Specter over to the democratic party.
And Lorien73 and Jetboy:
WHAT DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND ABOUT ILLEGAL ALIENS? THEY ARE HERE ILLEGALLY, THEY ARE TAKING AMERICAN JOBS, AND DON’T YOU DARE TELL ME THAT THEY ARE JOBS THAT AMERICANS WON’T DO~CONSTRUCTION JOBS/HOSPITALITY JOBS~10.2% UNEMPLOYMENT, THEY WILL DO THOSE JOBS IF YOU PAY A LIVING WAGE!

Don’t need a third party if we eliminate the RNC as the middleman and send our money directly to candidates. The big boys will get the message.
I would like to see either Liz or Sarah run in 2012,..doesn’t have to be both. I realize both need a bit more time and credentialing, but Obama can’t be allowed to govern a second term, and I see no one better than either one of those two to unseat him.

In a perfect world, I’d agree. But face it. We’ve have decades of open borders now with little to no enforcement.
Illegals in this county have kids, homes and jobs. Or many of them do. I find it hard to believe anyone would say to these people – go home and leave everything you have behind for a piece of bureaucratic mumbo-jumbo you’ll eventually get anyways. It simply makes no sense.
That’s why I’m just saying – if you are not a leech, if you have a job/family/etc and are earning your own way thru life stay. If not, bye.
There’s a perfect world, then there is reality.
lorien1973 on November 17, 2009 at 5:23 PM
The underground economy that would remain for illegals would not bankrupt social services like they are now. And if we secure the border, then the security issue is solved too.
Would there still be illegals? Sure, but not nearly in the numbers that there are now. Evidenced by the effect enforcement has had in various states.
No, no need for an unjust path to citizenship that rewards people for breaking the law.

What you mean like a centerfold? Allah would have a heartattack. Michelle would have to give him oxygen. More easy blog money, a centerfold of MeggieMac, and the love and adoration of his boss for making ever more money for the cause? The only thing better would be for MeggieMac to be there when he wakes up, stroking his fevered brow with a wet rag and gazing into his wonderful Allah eyes.
What’s not to like? He is after all, the Supreme Being and most Omnipotent One, rivaled only by his Nibs, President Obama. But I think Allah could take him in a fair fight. Probably with one hand tied behind his back.
But is it likely to happen? Nah, not a chance. McCain has more class and so does Sarah.

Who is making that argument? By making the illegals legal, you’ll force them into the same pay system that every other American is in, leveling the play field. So americans can compete for the same jobs – where, right now, they are simply priced out of .

Aside from some sort of path to citizenship, what other viable option is there for the 12 million illegals here now?
And although I 100% agree that we need to secure the border, more than half the illegals here now didn’t jump a fence, they came here legally on work visas that expired.
JetBoy on November 17, 2009 at 5:27 PM

I’ve seen estimates as high as 20 million, and there is no way they are all picking produce for a dollar a day. Cut off the work, cut off the money, and watch them head back to Mexico.
Give them amnesty and next time it will be 40 million here illegally.
Laura in Maryland on November 17, 2009 at 5:27 PM

Without the illegals, market forces will cause wages to increase. Scarcity always drives up prices, even the price of labor.
Laura in Maryland on November 17, 2009 at 5:30 PM
The old Bracero program worked pretty well for ag labor, and the numbers needed for such labor are no where near 12 million.
Terrye on November 17, 2009 at 5:30 PM
Only if the border is enforced first. Otherwise the deluge will increase exponentially into the future. More will come and wait for the next amnesty – why wouldn’t they take that risk? The Reagan amnesty in 1986 enticed huge numbers, far more than predicted, to come into the country. We simply can’t afford it.
Though I don’t like it, I’m willing to listen to ideas about a path to citizenship if and only if the border is secured first. The border is the number one concern and I’m betting that concern easily crosses party lines. It’s a huge bipartisan issue.

Spirit of 1776 on November 17, 2009 at 5:31 PM
So, you’re cheering paying illegals under the table, less than minimum, no payroll taxes, no workmen’s comp~so if they get hurt, too bad?
And you’re second argument~you’re still rewarding criminal behavior. Where does it end? Despite our US Border Patrol’s hard work, our border is still open. Want to pay for 80 million illegals? We have enough on our plate~we cannot pay for every country’s welfare/criminal class….
I’m going to make a bet that you don’t live in a neighborhood that has illegals~my parents do and I’ll be you wouldn’t feel the same if you did.

I’d argue that people who come here (even if illegally) and are holding down a job, have a family, etc have more respect for this country than those – such as in leadership – who constantly put it down and try and destroy what makes America great.
I agree. But at current, we are not enforcing the border. If we get something solid for enforcement on that end – one that politicicans can’t hedge out of like they’ve done for 40 years – and then work on making the illegals here either legal or getting rid of the leeches, then you’ll reach this a lot faster than what is currently being done.

The border is constantly under funded. Earlier this year, they cut more funds from the border patrol. I’m saying do this after you have a solid plan to secure the border to prevent this from happening yet again.
That’s why I’m saying that people who have a job/family/house etc can stay. Illegals in jail and/or on welfare get deported. I totally don’t want illegals getting any sort of benefits. I didn’t realize I was being confusing here.
lorien1973 on November 17, 2009 at 5:39 PM
I am glad Sarah touched on illegal immigration. I want to hear more.
I grew up in Mexifornia, it is more then just jobs that this effects. Back in the early 80′s we had bilingual class rooms. I don’t think we should confuse the protestors in the streets on some ginned up marches with people who are here just trying to feed their families and try and make something out of life. Let’s not confuse things.
Most jobs they get aren’t exactly requiring social security numbers. It’s a cash business. I’ve seen how it works, I ain’t stupid.
They are deflating wages, it’s a fact. It’s also a fact that most of them aren’t criminals of leeching on the system. The way it works now, out of some misaligned priorities, our tax dollars go to jailing, feeding and providing welfare to people who will never contribute to our society. It’s hard to believe that we have people who want this to continue. I’m saying dump the losers, keep the winners. Let them compete on a normal playing field like everyone else.
Cities have an impossible time deporting a few of them, under current laws of political correctness. Giving illegals some sort of out to become legal or go home, I think, makes sense.

You don’t really need to deport the illegals, per se, just prosecute employers who hire them. They come here for the work. No work, no illegals. Well, except for the drug runners, but that’s another mess.
pugwriter on November 17, 2009 at 6:03 PM
This is why I’m saying – pass enforcement first. Show people you can stop the flood of them coming in. Then work on the other part. I don’t see the need to continue the kabuki if they won’t take their job seriously.
lorien1973 on November 17, 2009 at 6:03 PM
That’s nice, but you should know that life isn’t a zero sum game. Some of your posts really betray some serious problems in what you believe. Living wage. Zero sum games, now?
lorien1973 on November 17, 2009 at 6:04 PM
Look, I’ve got several issues with illegal immigration. One of the main ones is that there are at least 5 hispanic drug gangs/cartels in the northern region of Alabama all the way to Atlanta. This is a major problem. We also have hospitals here closing facilities because they cannot keep servicing illegals for free. And to top it all off, it p*sses me off to hear nothing but spanish spoken at my kids soccer matches! Seriously, I sometimes forget what country I’m in it’s so bad. As Lynard Skynard would say “That Ain’t My America!” :o)

MEXICANNNNNNNNNSSSSS!!!!!!!!
Still, I’m glad Sarah answered the question without getting all Tom Tancredo/Wetback Under the Bed on us.
Great interview.
Sarah’s book, btw, will remain a bestseller for some time among ordinary white women. You watch.
victor82 on November 17, 2009 at 6:08 PM
Is that right~living wage, maybe I should be more specific for you-at least minimum wage and the employer is paying the taxes and workmen’s comp on the employee and the employee is paying their taxes.
Now, discussing taxes~when illegals pop out US citizen kids, we pay for their welfare and the illegals get the child tax credit THEY MAKE MONEY FROM PAYING TAXES WITH THAT BENEFIT~And a zero sum game.
I will ask you again, Lorien~what do you not understand about the word ILLEGAL? They are here in this country ILLEGALLY and YES, I WOULD RATHER A US CITIZEN GET THE JOB AND THE ILLEGAL ALIEN GO BACK TO THEIR COUNTRY!
HornetSting on November 17, 2009 at 6:10 PM
We happen to be the most prosperous nation in the world, with one of the world’s largest third world nations bordering us. The illegal immigration problem will never disappear. But it needs to be, and can be, managed better.
I feel bad about the circumstances of the Mexican poor. I also feel bad about the circumstances of the Somalian poor. But the best way to benefit economies of other countries, including Mexico, is to get our act together before we end up like them.

I think the solution is much more simple than politicians want to let on too.
Create..(there already are some unenforced requirements).. a simple requirement that all employers verify citizenship or face strong and consistent penalties. Granted, its a system that would have to evolve to a Citizenship ID, but so what? Once the system is in place, it would be immediately up to speed and kind of retroactive in the sense that, if you can’t work you will most likely leave on your own..no need to “find” the illegals..no need to run up against lawyers with claims of racial profiling, no drain on law enforcement or social services etc.
Just take a page out of the dem playbook and barge it through any way possible….once its law, good luck getting rid of it. I think the support for flushing the illegals has more people behind it than the touchy feely team has.
Itchee Dryback on November 17, 2009 at 6:11 PM
I agree with her too and like her. And the interview was not a problem given the audience. But the problem is the non-believers, and these are usually the people who don’t regularly follow politics and gets their information from the standard media, i.e. the so-called independents. They don’t take the time to follow candidates and are easily swayed by perceptions, usually falsely-created ones. On the plus side, because they have short attention spans, if you can razzle dazzle them for a few minutes with facts and figures, they’ll say “ok, works for me” and then turn the tube. So if Palin can work in more specifics and data, she can combat this erroneous narrative that she doesn’t know anything. That was my only point. And she did that with her foreign policy answer.
I suppose to illustrate my point, look at Biden. He is never questioned on his foreign policy credentials. It doesn’t matter that half the crap that comes out of his mouth is false. He’s just decent enough of a bullsh*tter to keep the uniformed from prodding any further.

Really good interview.
the_nile on November 17, 2009 at 6:29 PM
I agree with this ElectricPhase. She should have been better prepared and would have been if McCain hadn’t dithered so long in picking his VP. He was too busy trying to find a way to slip Lieberman onto the ticket and by the time he realized that wouldn’t fly with the base of the party, time had about run out. Palin was a Doug Flutie “Hail Mary” pass for them because he was loosing so badly.

The only way blatantblue can beat up a troll is if someone else has already done it, and you then you hand him the club, lead him to the carcass, and move his arm up and down for him.
Loxodonta on November 17, 2009 at 7:09 PM
The are ways illegal aliens will stop coming and start deporting themselves :
1. No birthcertificates, SS# and automatic citizenship for anchor-babies of illegals
2. No foodstamps, free school, free housing and free medical for anchor-babies and their illegal parents
There is a reason the first thing illegals do after getting into our country is to hookup and have babies. Only a very small %age of illegals actually “work”. That illegals come here to work is a talking point given to the politicians by the drug-dealer lobby which they mouth with no knowledge of facts, as usual
macncheez on November 17, 2009 at 7:11 PM
No, there is a way.
First, seal the border completely.
Second, pay them all in some other form of currency, that can only be redeemed here. Once they cannot send the money back south of the border, they either sincerely try to become citizens, or leave.

Third parties are great, as long as they’re on the Left. On the Right, all they do is help liberals win.

BREAKING NEWS…..
The same people claim that she’s a “quitter” and that she should have stayed in her job as Governor would….BE COMPLAINING TODAY…. if she was commenting on the Death Panels, etc.
I originally thought it was a mistake but I was wrong.
She would be handcuffed by her position……maybe she realized that the Republic is at stake.
I hope she runs in 2012 but I’m not convinced (she herself has said she doesn’t need a title).
PappyD61 on November 17, 2009 at 7:41 PM
Hmmm…actually I was talking about her performance today during the Rush interview.
ElectricPhase on November 17, 2009 at 7:46 PM
To be honest, this is a debate that I have with myself often. I’ve run across a fair number of (probably) illegal immigrants that I’d take in a heartbeat over many citizens. Then again, amnesty probably wouldn’t be picky, and there are those others….
ElectricPhase on November 17, 2009 at 7:48 PM
The one where she said without hesitation “We win, you lose?”

Here’s the Limbaugh portion on foreign policy (note: nary a hyperventilation in sight):
BTW, looking for that reminds me that the illegal immigration question was given with 30 seconds to answer and she prefaced her answer saying she wouldn’t be able to comprehensively answer in that time then went on with overview so can we please dispense with hand-wringing?
KittyLowrey on November 17, 2009 at 7:58 PM
Yep. Sorry, but to me she sounded plum flustered. She should have covered much more ground, even in a short answer.
ElectricPhase on November 17, 2009 at 7:58 PM
You’ll see in post above this that I provided the q&a. I don’t have a problem with it and in fact was very pleased hearing her saying it live.

To those who want to kick out all the RINO’s, I have some questions:
With what will all the RINO’s be replaced? More conservative Republicans? Or, more liberal Democrats? Who decides who gets the primary nominations and gets elected? Isn’t that up to the voters of each district and state?
And what shall we do with the voters of those districts and states who don’t like pure liberals or pure conservatives, but prefer something in between? How do we kick those voters out? Or, shall we only allow them to vote for moderate liberal Democrats?
Do we want a rigid, narrow, my way or the highway, conform or your out party? Is enforcing conformity and uniformity a conservative value? Is hatred of those with whom we disagree a conservative value? Is tossing vulgarities and names at those with whom we disagree a conservative value? Is attempting to silence debate and kick out dissenters a conservative value?
Which strategy is more likely to succeed in attracting the most voters? “Let’s kick out all the bleeping RINO’s and squishes?” Or, “this is what I stand for as a conservative, this is what makes America great, and this is why I want you to vote for me?” What would Ronald Reagan have done?
Or, please explain how the strategy you are pursuing will win a majority of conservative seats in the House and Senate, and retake the White House. Thanks.
Loxodonta on November 17, 2009 at 8:02 PM
You know, there’s a reason why we’ve never really had a viable 3rd party in 220 years. The reason is the electoral college.
The only way you would ever have a multi-party system is if you ammend the constitution to allow for the election of a President who obtains a plurality rather than a majority of electoral votes. As it is however, the introduction of a major 3rd party almost guarantees that one of the two remaining parties will see its vote split with the easy election of the other party. The end result is that the 3rd party either quickly goes away as a national force (Perot in ’92) or the 3rd party takes the place of one of the two major parties (Whigs -> Republicans).
Personally I don’t want to see the constitution changed. Do you?
But the result is that we have two major parties which are composed of factions that settle their differences enough to co-exist. In a sense, the two parties represent “coalitions” found in parlimentary systems. Too few people really understand this. So, yes, the Republican party is not your perfect party – but all things considered, how could it be?
If you don’t like that, I suggest you move to a country with a parlimentary form of government where you can belong to the party that exactly represents your views.

We’ll have to agree to disagree. Let me repeat, I like Palin.

+1,000,000,000
End this ridiculous corruption of the 14th Ammendment. If the parents are naturalized citizens or even permanent legal residents then I have no problem with their children getting citizenship. But illegals, temporary residents, tourists, students, embassy people, etc, their children should get the citizenship of their parent’s country.
mrsmwp on November 17, 2009 at 8:11 PM
O’Reilly said he started his interview with Palin today, spent about an hour with her. He said it’s policy heavy and he said she does not come across as a joke at all (said this to Alan Colmes, told him to watch it when it airs and he’d see—not that that will stop the left).
