Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on November 17, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Jules Crittenden spotted this doozy from Barack Obama’s attempt to ingratiate himself with his hosts during his first tour of Asia as President:

Trying to reassure allies and rivals, President Barack Obama billed himself Saturday as “America’s first Pacific president,” promising the nations of Asia “a new era of engagement with the world based on mutual interests and mutual respect.”

Er … Barack Obama, meet Richard Nixon and his birthplace:

Location: 18061 Yorba Linda Boulevard
Nearest city: Yorba Linda, Orange County, California, USA

Last I saw, California also qualifies as a Pacific state.  Ronald Reagan spent far more time in California than Obama did in Hawaii, although the Gipper was born in the Midwest.  As Jules concludes, Obama appears to consider himself the Alpha and Omega of … well, just about everything.  If anything, Obama has shown himself to be much more of an Ivy League ivory-tower President — as his knowledge of Japanese customs in greetings amply demonstrated.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Illustrations by Chris Muir of Day by Day. Be sure to read the adventures of Sam, Zed, Damon, and Jan every day!

Obama is very relative. He believes in and exercises relative morality, relative ethics, and relative truth.

kingsjester on November 17, 2009 at 8:12 AM

William Howard Taft was governor-general of the Philippines. Dwight Eisenhower had military postings in the Philippines and the Panama Canal Zone. Herbert Hoover worked as a mining engineer in Australia and China; he even learned to speak Mandarin. Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, and Bush 41 all served in the Pacific during the Second World War. What they did as adults was perhaps more consequential than what Obama did as a child.

pa·cif·ic (p-sfk) also pa·cif·i·cal (–kl)
adj.
1. Tending to diminish or put an end to conflict; appeasing.
2. Of a peaceful nature; tranquil.
[French pacifique, from Old French pacifice, from Latin pcificus : px, pc-, peace; see pag- in Indo-European roots + -ficus, -fic.]

There is a reason the ocean is named that, you know…

reaganaut on November 17, 2009 at 8:19 AM

The difference between this and “I can see Russia…” is that you literally can see Russian from Alaska. A significant portion of the Aleutian Islands are Russian territory and are physically visible from the Alaskan Aleutians.

Two islands — Big Diomede, which sits in Russian territory, and Little Diomede, — which is part of the United States are less than two and a half miles apart, which means that, on a clear day, you can see Russia from Alaska. In fact, between mid-December and June, — when the water between the two islands freezes — you could walk from one frozen island to the other.

Obama’s claim of being the first Pacific American President on the other hand doesnt even have that much actual fact backing it up.

doriangrey on November 17, 2009 at 8:34 AM

I love Hot Air. Visit several times a day. The Obamateurism of the Day is a cute feature. But I don’t think Obama is stupid. None of this behavior— the bowing, the failure to cross his heart during the pledge of allegiance or national anthem — none of it is accidental. You can call it amateurish. But it’s no different than a professionally managed campaign to inflict brand damage — on the USA. It’s intentional. It weakens our national security posture. It emboldens our enemies. And it’s going to get somebody killed, if it hasn’t done so already. Witness the dithering re: Afghanistan. And, if it turns out his Justice Department shutdown the Hassan investigation earlier this year, then his hands are already bloody.

That’s right!

And Nixon was born/raised in the Pacific state of California. But Obama doesn’t recognize former Quakers as legitimate, even though it was ex-Quakers in NYC who established the first free school for Freed Negros. Quakers did more to stop slavery in American than Obama’s ancestors. But then, beyond exploitation for his own selfish advancement by projecting guilt onto everyone but himself, slavery has never been an issue for Obama who endorses the slavery of the Asian peasants by their own governments today, China the world’s worst by sheer number of victims.

You nailed that. When those over 40 were 40, we had not bought into the perpetual immaturity complex that today’s 40-year-olds sold their souls to buy their version of eternal youth.

Those over 40 today generally appreciate the traditional concept regarding the aging process; that youthful idealism matures into wisdom by facing the realities of responsibility. The realizations that many used to reach by the age of 30 were defined after 1960s by the dictum, “Don’t trust anyone over 30.” As liberally radical kids aged, that morphed into ‘don’t trust anyone who knows better than to trust in Marxism to make the world perfect.’
