Obama stonewalling Congress on Hasan?

posted at 8:48 am on November 17, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Congress wants to determine what failures allowed Army Major Nidal Hasan to kill 14 people and wound dozens of others in a premeditated shooting spree at Fort Hood.  The Obama administration has refused to cooperate into a probe to find those failures.  Ben Pershing at the Washington Post wrote last night that the White House refuses to provide witnesses to Congress for hearings into the counterterrorism failure:

The first public congressional hearing on the Fort Hood attack will not include testimony from any current federal law enforcement, military or intelligence officials because the Obama administration “declined to provide any” such witnesses, according to a Senate committee source.

The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee has released the witness list for its hearing “The Fort Hood Attack: A Preliminary Assessment,” scheduled for Thursday at 10 a.m. ET. The list includes four experts on terrorism and intelligence issues: retired Gen. Jack Keane, the former U.S. Army vice chief of staff; Brian Jenkins, a senior advisor at the Rand Corp.; Mitchell Silber, the director of analysis for the New York City Police Department’s Intelligence Division; and Juan Zarate, a senior advisor for the Transnational Threats Project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

But the list does not include anyone actively involved in investigating the Fort Hood attack, or anyone who might have been responsible for decisions made by various government agencies before the attack about whether to investigate the shooting suspect, Nidal Hasan. The Senate committee source said HSGAC Chairman Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) had hoped to have witnesses from the FBI and the U.S. Army, but was rebuffed in his requests.

Barack Obama repeatedly promised to make his administration the most open and transparent in history.  Accountability to Congress goes far beyond “hope and change” or any other campaign sloganeering.  It’s required by the Constitution, and Congress has the right to demand answers from the FBI and the Army as part of their oversight of both.

Furthermore, Congress has no interest in “solving” the murder case.  The military has the shooter.  Congress has the duty to see why Hasan wasn’t identified as a risk before he picked up a gun and started killing soldiers.  Why didn’t critical information get shared on Hasan, especially his correspondence with Anwar al-Aulaqi, a man suspected of an operational role in the 9/11 attacks by the Congressional Commission that studied them, as well as a known al-Qaeda recruiter and sympathizer?  Are there any other soldiers communicating with Hasan or other AQ figures that the FBI and the Joint Terrorism Task Force has chalked up to “research”?

If nothing else, Congress could have asked the Army why they intended to deploy a psychiatrist who repeatedly attempted to violate patient confidentiality in order to press war-crimes charges against the soldiers he was treating:

Major Nidal Malik Hasan’s military superiors repeatedly ignored or rebuffed his efforts to open criminal prosecutions of soldiers he claimed had confessed to “war crimes” during psychiatric counseling, according to investigative reports circulated among federal law enforcement officials. …

Investigators believe Hasan’s frustration over the failure of the Army to pursue what he regarded as criminal acts by U.S. soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan may have helped to trigger the shootings.

“The Army may not want to admit it, and you may not hear much about it, but it was very big for him,” said one of the federal investigators on the task force collecting evidence of the crime.

His last effort to get the attention of military investigators came on Nov. 2, three days before his alleged shooting spree, according to the reports.

Hasan made a number of attempts to inform on his patients to prosecutors, in at least one case signing e-mails “Praise be to Allah.”  And no one in the Army thought this was a little weird?  Does the Army routinely send combat soldiers to psychiatrists who violate their trust and the doctor-patient privilege?  And even knowing all of this, the Army was about to send Hasan to a combat zone to treat even more combat soldiers.

That’s the kind of thing Congress needs to know, and the Army needs to explain.  Unfortunately, Obama wants to stall those questions and keep from providing the answers.

Steyn’s Corner post on this topic is classic:

Imagine you’re back from a tour in Iraq or Afghanistan. The Army assigns you a shrink who tries to convert you to Islam, and looks on his “counseling” sessions as war-crimes interrogations.

The US military appears awfully close to having colluded in Major Hasan’s abuse of his patients. But that’s okay, it’s not like they’re Gitmo detainees or anything…

What does it take? How many have to die and in sacrifice to what? In order to finally appease some politically correct, never content ideology trampling our always was intended to be rebellious first amendment?

We’ve gone from the condemnation of one, “the N word” as unspeakable (for most) to literally every word, name or action as code-able as a terrible, job killing, ‘words hurt’ pejorative, its ridiculous comes to mind but that’s such an understatement it boggles the mind.

Its time. Take the money out of race baiting, take civil rights court actions out of the private sector and rein in the government policies that make death by PC possible, if not likely.

If while murdering American service members, Hasan had yelled Jesus is Lord or worse added: I hate those homosexuals, oh geez, the howls from the roof tops and the stigma against Christians would be thick and bitter.

Considerable and pervasive bias and hate exists right at the surface for groups who don’t happen to fall in the excusatory category.

Political correctness is hypocrisy excused and now its deadly.

Muhammad Ali: (I checked Wiki to make sure I spelled his name right, heaven forbid I might not) “its not bragging if its true”. Well, its not offensive if its true either and especially if it could just kill you.

What bothers Barry is that the incident cannot be spun so Hasan appears as the victim. The more facts that are known reveal that this nutbag was permitted to continue his career in the army despite ample evidence that his loyalties were with our enemies.

Who at the top of the Army is making these decisions? I’m a former Army officer (artillery) and cannot believe the fecklessness in Hasan’s chain of command. It goes further than his immediate supervisors though as the entire PC/CYA attitude is “taught” from above.

I just saw some video of the attack that killed 9 soldiers in Afghanistan a few months ago. I cannot believe how stupid the location of that fire base was. It’s like somebody said. “Hey, there’s a huge kill zone there surrounded by high ground with dense vegetation. Let’s put just 50 guys there and watch what happens.” WHO the hell is making these decisions in the upper chain of command in the Army? Did common sense retire?

Oh yes there is. Hasan has spent the majority of his military career with Bush as his commander-in-chief. The failure of military authorities to notice his erratic behavior patterns occurred, for the most part, during the Bush administration. Obowma was preoccupied cleaning up all the other messes left behind by Bush/Cheney and would have dealt with Hasan if he had the time. If Bush had not allowed Hasan to remain in the Army, none of this would have ever happened. Ergo…it is Bush’s fault!

I should work for the White House.

Howcome on November 17, 2009 at 9:21 AM

Man, this just when you think this issue can’t get any stranger, it goes and gets stranger. War crimes?

I would suppose if there was some sort of serious infraction disclosed during counseling, say like “Doc, I feel so bad I shot that farmer in the back and raped his wife,” then perhaps something should happen at that point. Somehow I suspect what Doctor Doofus is calling ‘war crimes’ is opening fire at a jihadist who is shooting at you.

As for Obam’ter, his stonewalling makes no sense at all. In all honesty, I don’t think one can credibly lay specific blame at this on his desk, even if you could make the case that perhaps his ‘diversity’ policies perhaps contributed to it. But I would bet that Hasan’s name was never personally brought up to Obam’ter. This was probably in the process of being ‘handled’ at much lower levels.

Then again, there WAS the FBI looking into him, so maybe the name was in some report, just one of many, a footnote saying an investigation was ongoing.

That’s what I figured, but that still makes no sense. Convincing Americans that Hasan was some lonely dude who just snapped is an exercise in futility at this point. You’d have a better shot at converting Bill Maher to Christianity.

Hasan is an Islamic terrorist, period. The vast majority of Americans believe this. The Army is admitting this. Even politicians are conceding this. And open the question, that since Obama started his witch-hunt at the CIA have the people in intelligence gathering started slacking off or not following up on leads for fear of future claims of criminality by Obama.

He shovels plenty of bs on the right, effectively burying his opposition alive under the House Floor, deprived of protocol oxygen, lights off and doors locked, members locked out of committees and prohibited from free speech/debate on the floor, censoring communication between members of congress and their specific constituents, striking the official house speaker’s record, preventing transparency, the House Speaker bearing false witness against the CIA.

It is the duty of the Chief Executive to confront corruption, not to provide corruption and protection for the corrupted.

Where is Obama’s censorship of Nancy Pelosi? –nonexistent, as are historical records that disappear and Constitutional matters that “lose ground” to executive privilege—not really, but really, depending on the meaning of “is” to prosecute because the supreme law of the land is demoted by Obama’s will. Obama has become “the word”.

Can we impeach this twit yet? Or does NYC need to be nuked first?

ErinF on November 17, 2009 at 9:34 AM

Congress can issue subpoenas, but if Obama tells people to ignore them, all Congress can do is maybe go to court to try to get them enforced. Lots of luck with that.

If you’ve got a couple years and the willingness to hear me out, I could tell you a LOT about Obama’s stonewalling and how deep it goes into every corner of the executive and judicial branches. Until the public is willing to actually listen and not just call it a crazy conspiracy theory, Obama’s puppetmaster has this nation by the tail.

It’s your choice, America. If you’re not willing to listen to the evidence of how corrupt our whole system is, then you deserve to have this system, and it will devour you.

Being threatened with your lives is no excuse to refuse to listen. Everyone trying to expose this stuff lives in fear of what Obama’s jerks can do. Until we join together to display Emanuel’s dead fish in the streets his dead fish will wield power. As long as his labels are allowed to stick and deter truth-telling, he’s won and we are on the road to slaughter.

Maybe,in Obama’s mindset,Hasan is a Freedom Fighter!!

canopfor on November 17, 2009 at 8:57 AM

Maybe?

Blacksmith8 on November 17, 2009 at 9:38 AM

Never thought I’d say this and up until now, did not think it but…it’s beginning to look as if he is blind on the subject of Islam in this country. Do not want this mis-construed as my being anti American Muslims, I’m not. But there is a sober reality here that Obama is simply not facing up to.

jeanie on November 17, 2009 at 9:39 AM

Surely this isn’t the same guy who is mentioned in the George Washington University Homeland Security Policy Institute Proceedings Report as a participant in Obama’s transition team?

Is this a hoax, different guy, or a big reason to stonewall?

Look for Hasan’s name on page 29 of the report.

Frankly, I think the Obama administration has something to hide and I think the stalling is to bury it deeper. I also think that this administration has taken us right back to the 90′s in terms of security, very efficiently and on purpose.
I don’t know what the hell their goal is but it is certainly not truth.

ORconservative on November 17, 2009 at 9:40 AM

Hasan has screwed up the plans for prosecuting KSM.

When people hear of the interrogation techniques allegedly used, US citizens at least would likely say, “Hey, whatever stops another terrorist, go to it!”

Wethal on November 17, 2009 at 9:41 AM

Can you imagine a Christian psychiatrist who sent emails to his superiors and signed them, “Praise the Lord!”? He’s be out on his ass so fast, he’d leave skidmarks on the sidewalk.

I am truly fed up with the Army PC crap. Enough already when our forces’ lives are on the line.

Four years is very hard to hold back and who you are and what you truely believe in. He’ll trip himself up as he did with snuffaluffagus.

Let’s not jump to conclusions! Dick Cheney actually put the pistol into Hasan’s reluctant hands and squeezed off 100 shots.

Sadly until terrorism directly touches some of these people they will remain on their high horses and blame America.

If indeed Obama represents the “most Pacific” of any potus to date, he also represents the “most Muslim” by far.

How do Asian-Americans embrace that?

Obama’s @ss is so overly sold-out, he’s sold 100% shares each to MULTIPLE VARIOUS INTERESTS who do not coalesce into the bowwow throng of worshipers.

Obama’s done the same sell-out of America as he has of himself. Witness his perpetual persistent borrowing from China to finance his own corruption, not to finance American Industry. Witness his persistent demands to mandate authoritarian taxation without representation, smothering the voices of the people, enabling the censorship rather than transparency between citizenry and elected representation. Witness his twisted appointments of Holder as Attorney General, and Napolitano to head the DHS, etc.

Obama is over-extended, and his creditors own him and demand pounds of flesh, whether Obama’s or ours. And Obama is only too glad to feed our flesh to his owners. That’s his reason for existence.

go on………….. I for one, do not doubt that this is not a game. I also think that the WH’s policy of major distraction is working.
I also am very intrigued by the latest suicide in Chicago (bang bang) there are more bodies surrounding Obama than Clinton could have had with no term limits.

Worst terrorist attack on US soil since 9/11. Why wouldn’t he stonewall?

Who at the top of the Army is making these decisions? I’m a former Army officer (artillery) and cannot believe the fecklessness in Hasan’s chain of command. It goes further than his immediate supervisors though as the entire PC/CYA attitude is “taught” from above.

You have been blessed to have no knowledge of AMEDD.

Mojave Mark on November 17, 2009 at 9:06 AM

Sadly, I’ve had that realization as well. That’s not the first time I’ve seen the terrain and wondered out loud what ignorant stooge picked that site for a base.
