Newsweek editor: Our Palin cover wasn’t sexist
posted at 5:19 pm on November 17, 2009 by Allahpundit
Translation, for all the “Spinal Tap” fans out there: What’s wrong with being sexy?
“We chose the most interesting image available to us to illustrate the theme of the cover, which is what we always try to do,” Meacham said, in a statement provided to Huffington Post. “We apply the same test to photographs of any public figure, male or female: does the image convey what we are saying? That is a gender-neutral standard.”…
Finally, as for the issue of whether the image is sexist, a source at Newsweek relays that the art and photo directors responsible for the cover (which was decided upon last Thursday) are both women.
Follow the link to HuffPo for a half-hearted defense of how the cover “conveys” what Newsweek was saying. Really? The point of Meacham’s and Thomas’s pieces was that she’s leading a dead-end right-wing populist movement that’s widening the ideological divide at a moment when America needs it to narrow. The point of the cover is … what? Sarah Palin likes to jog? Sarah Palin is in damned fine shape? Sarah Palin showing some leg might help sell a few more magazines? Where’s the “conveyance” in that? There’s nothing necessarily sexist about noting her physical appeal, even in the course of an otherwise serious political critique, but as a standalone image to introduce a bunch of pieces that dump on her, the subtext seems to be that she’s not worth taking seriously — and that her good looks symbolize that. I know women on both sides of the aisle who disprove that theory.
Sarahcuda lowered the boom on Newsweek last night via Facebook, as you’ve surely already seen, but David Brody was first out of the box among the people I read on the right to rip them for the cover, writing, “Where’s the sexy photo of Mitt Romney? Why not a picture of Tim Pawlenty with an unbuttoned shirt relaxing on a couch in the Twin Cities?” Fair enough, but have Mitt or T-Paw actually posed for any sexy photos? I wrote at the time that the Runner’s World pic first came out that it was essentially a check-me-out photo showing off what great shape she was in thanks to running, even after five kids. That doesn’t excuse Newsweek exploiting it for political purposes, but if the media’s as unfair to her as she claims — and it often is — then she had to know that eventually someone would use that photo in an unkind way. Or … was that the point? Bait her critics with a picture they couldn’t resist and then sit back as they walk into the trap?
Update: Then again, Sarahcuda did famously do an interview in front of a turkey slaughterhouse, producing a clip that run in a loop on MSNBC for about a week. Which means (a) this probably wasn’t a trap and (b) she really needs to think ahead when doing photo ops/shoots about her enemies might use the pics against her.

Not just Sarah Palin. ALL politicians need to think ahead when doing photo ops/shoots, because their enemies might use them against them, because that’s how politics fricking works.

Hey – I heard that in an effort to prove they are not biased with their sexism Pukeweek is doing a cover with Napolitano in a Bikini and Babs Mikulski wearing a thong!
That will surely sell some Mags!
iam7545 on November 17, 2009 at 5:48 PM
It’s also a deliberate attempt to evoke the “damn, she’s hot” reaction from men, which will probably sell more magazines. Totally sexist, all the way around.

Please warn people to stab their eyes out before typing words like “Mikulski in a thong.”

You are, in essence, calling her a liar. As she has said she was surprised at the media’s response. Regardless, I think full speed ahead. Go ahead and pose for Runner’s World. We’re not under Sharia yet.
I’m really looking forward to your investigative piece showing that she had her daughter for the purpose of calling out David Letterman. It’s compelling stuff, Sully.

I think it is a good picture… and I really hate cries of sexism… but it is interesting to see the call of sexism used by an arch-sentimentalist against those wish to impose universal ironism on everyone but themselves… this cannot be, cause liberals are not sexist you see?

If the problem is that Newsweek used a cheesecake photo of Palin, there has to be at least some problem with Palin agreeing to do a cheesecake photo. The knock on Palin from the beginning has been that she’s all image and no substance. How can Newsweek make that point any better than with a photo that has no deeper significance than, “gee, don’t I have great legs?”
RightOFLeft on November 17, 2009 at 5:51 PM
I know Palin supporters want to rewrite all the rules concerning political figures, but once someone poses for a picture, it becomes fair game to be used no matter what the circumstances are. Its not like someone snuck into her house and caught her undressing. Wasn’t Reagan’s “Bedtime for Bonzo” picture used a lot to make fun of him? Clinton’s stupid finger waving? Ford falling down?

It’s never sexist when a lib bashes a conservative woman.
It’s never racist when a lib bashes a conservative black.
We all know the double-standard.
But Newsweek and that report the other day basically showed lib men, however unintendedly, where the real and best-looking women are. But your sweet bippy a lot of Sarah’s recent images, like the fake ones, are saved to the computers of a lot of lib men.

BULLLLLL- CRAP!!
Gender neutral. I laughed. They know, and we know, they used that photo to help sell their magazine.
As far as sexist:
If she means that Newsweek knew they were trashing her life, career and intelligence but decided to use her body to move their sorry piece of —-, then yes it was sexist. If the only thing they could find that was good about her was her body, then it qualifies. And Newsweek knows there are plenty of pictures of her in business attire, they chose not to use them. Do I think the photo was inherently sexist? No. But Newsweek wanted to portray Palin in a certain light. As nothing but a pinup girl because it fits their narrative. At least Runner’s World used the photos in a more positive way because they were used in context and had some good quotes from Palin.
Ever since that photographer admitted she intentionally tried portray McCain in a bad way on the cover, I don’t trust these people at all. I think alot of people like (wink wink) the photo. Heck Palin probably liked it too. But these people are all about subtlety, nuanced positions and subliminal messaging. Just read their work.

Newsweek’s finest cover moment was when they made an insinuation that Bush 41 was a wimp. This is a guy that was shot down in WW2. Newsweek has a problem with people of Courage.

However the use of the picture my newsweek detroys whatever point they were trying to make because it shows that newsweek can not be taken seriously which is ironic because that was what newsweek was trying to protray irt Palin. Ok, so I haven’t read the Newsweek article. They’re commenting on her appearance? On her athleticism? On her workout regimen or her diet?
Somehow I thought politics and a book were involved or something. I must be confused… that or Newsweak’s answer is about as sorry as it could be.
But I understand. It isn’t sexist. But when you take a picture of a broad, what do you picture her doing? Sitting behind a desk? Working? Trying to make laws or something? Like chicks can even handle something like that. I mean you make the girlies look pretty, what more can you do?
Its not sexist, its just being nice… right Meacham?

Newsweek ran cover after cover and article after article praising the Obambi in the months before (and after) the election.
Their revenue is down 50% since the same time last year. They’ve cut circulation (stating they wanted to cater to a more ‘elite’ reader).
They just laid off another 13 people from their already dismally small editorial staff last week, and now the magazine is only a handful of pages thick.
Oh yeah, and they did the typical liberal tactic when your revenues are down – They raised the price on their mag!
My bet is that they will be out of business in 6-8 months, tops.
Good riddance to bad garbage.
RedbonePro on November 17, 2009 at 6:02 PM
As a woman, on the one hand I find it hard to swallow the faux outrage over a picture she posed for. Yes, she’s in running shorts, but it is quite clearly a pose (replete with American flag with political tones).
But, I don’t believe she is actually outraged. I think Newsweek’s use of the photo was anticipated. For those who will be more endeared to her because she’s a looker (its human nature), this photo will actually help her – and she didn’t put it out there so she doesn’t look arrogant in the process. At the same time, she somewhat legitimately gets to point out the sexism/double standard, because the use of that photo (as opposed to others) was a deliberate attempt to convey the bimbo meme. [let's be thankful they didn't use some of the beauty pagent photos that are out there]
The attempt to immunize the sexism charges (women were involved, couldn’t have been sexist) is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard.
Is there a woman on this board who hasn’t at one time or another used derogatory comments against another women’s looks, for example, as a way of demeaning her as a person? I’ve done it (not proud of it, regretted it later). Women can be full-on sexist if they want to be.
Firefly_76 on November 17, 2009 at 6:03 PM
AP, you’re missing one of the subtexts of this particular photo that was bandied about at the time of the original release. It’s not that she’s posing in the runner’s outfit, it’s that she’s posing in the running outfit and shorts and leaning on the American flag. It’s not exactly an offense to God and Country, but it’s not terribly flattering either and probably something Palin should’ve thought about when she posed.
.
Really, has it been that long?
.
Not that it necessarily bothers me personally, but it did bother a lot of other people at the time of the RW article.
.
And I doubt that subtext was lost on the guys at Newsweek who were trying to score a few cheap points at the expense of those who generally go apeshit over people who show less than proper respect to the American flag…

And it is also fair game for the person being slimed to call them out on the use they are making of the photo. the left has gotten soft over the last 20 years as the GOP elite RINO’s have chosen to not fight the media and not fight back. When a Palin comes along and calls them on it It causes the media to act like a kid with his hand in the coockie jar and causes voters to see the media in that light.

Real photo. Sarah is an avid runner. Her father and mother do marathons. Big part of her life. The RW article was fascinating. Her biggest complaint, when asked by RW about running for VP, was that the McCain team failed to allot her much time to run. It’s her mechanism for relieving stress.
If you check out that issue online, you’ll see a lot of shots of her in running apparel. I was impressed because she and I wear the same brand of running shoes! (not Nike)
Yup, there is actually a posed outdoor photo of her in the same outfit. Just not as “posed.”
Besides the whole Sound of Music angle, this deal was an epic fail.
I wrote the other day that this photo is a Norman Rockwell painting, with a tad of Alberto Vargas. (or insert your favorite vintage pin up artist)
It’s mom and apple pie.
Here you have the perfect “girl next door.” The one you take home to meet mom and dad.
She is in a wholesome, all American setting, even has the flag draped over a chair!
Sarah herself is shown in the peak of vitality, the peak of condition.
This folks, is the image those idiots were going for when they showed Obama running on the beach with the sun “glistening” off of his moobs.
You see this photo of Sarah, and you think strong and powerful, or at least I do. Throw in the fact that she is SMOKIN’ HOT, and you have a true winner.
And before our lady friends get upset at that, smokin’ hot was what they were going for with Mr Metrosexual. ANOTHER epic fail.
As for what Sarah was thinking, I think Allah was right the first time. (something I don’t get to say often)
I don’t think Sarah intentionally thought, “hey, this’ll make a nice trap” but I do think she’s loving it, and using it to her advantage!
The turkey thing was something she just wasn’t paying attention of. Remember, this is a gal that hunts and fishes. Slaughtering animals ain’t a big deal. She didn’t pay attention to the camera angle.
Frankly, it’s kind of endearing to know she ain’t perfect! Shows she just doesn’t take herself all that seriously. Not a bad trait to have, especially considering the extreme narcissist we have in office now.
gary4205 on November 17, 2009 at 6:09 PM
Bullshit. Let Sarah be Sarah. No need for her to worry about how they’re going to rip on her. We all need to stop worrying about how her/our enemies portray us.
Hucklebuck on November 17, 2009 at 6:10 PM
The stink is not the pic itself but the hypocrisy of the Left. If Sarah posed like that for a conservative publication, the Left would say she’s an ignorant broad selling her body to gain notice. In other words, she’s unelightened. Nevermind the two liberal schools of thought on women in porn: half say it’s empowering while the rest say it’s selling out.
The Left seeks to own every issue on both sides. It seems Sarah called the Left on its own terms, and they don’t like it. Hell, CNN used faked images to poke fun at her when it wouldn’t DARE try genuine truth with a liberal woman.

She’s better off just getting her message out. Even she said “If I die politically, I die.”
She’s in it for the benefit of the country, not as a political stepping-stone. If it ends up working for her, politically, all the better. But that’s gravy, from her perspective, methinks.
pugwriter on November 17, 2009 at 6:29 PM
I dont’ really have an issue with the cover, the photo, or anything. I find it amusing that the imbiciles who are supposed to “report” seem to think that she is some sort of “problem” that must be solved.
On the turkey farm thing, heck, I grew up doing myself with chickens every summer, except without the fancy equipment to keep them from flopping around (we eventually tied them to the clothesline, but I digress). I doubt that most people who saw that had much of an issue with it, as everyone knows that meat does not get manufactured on nice little styrofoam trays. Besides, its not like you could even see any of the ‘carnage’ that was going on, IIRC.
But it was so amusing to see Oooberdoosh giggling and pointing like a seventh-grader in his “instant” commentary on that clip. That dude has issues.

Fail on so many levels. The theme was that she’s dividing the country because… she’s a hot looking runner?
And how often does Newsweek reproduce the cover of another magazine and use it for their own purposes? Are they too broke to do their own photo shoot or hire an illustrator?
Agreed. Although through no fault of her own the perspective/proportion of the pilfered photo is distorted with her head looking too small while her thighs looking big.

Although there are a number of associations with that title, I beleive the most likely is from the song: “How do you Solve a Problem like Maria,” from “My Fair Lady.” From Wikipedia:
So, the cover is a double whammy. It’s sexist and elitist.
What Newsweek may have forgotten is that Maria turned out to have much more class than many in the upper class who had turned down their noses at her.

Sarah’s best deal is to be Sarah, and not give a damn. If she wants to do it, I say do it, whatever “IT” is. It’s totally ridiculous to try to live your life in a manner so that no one can ridicule you.
As the old saying goes, “you can’t please everyone.” In fact, by trying to please everyone, you generally piss everyone off! This is the “moderate” GOP’s problem in a nutshell. They are so hung up on being all things to all people, that they are nothing to everybody.
Sarah is a free spirit who takes chances. That’s EXACTLY what we need right now, especially when it’s someone like Sarah who has bushel baskets full of common sense to go along with her risk taking.
Oh, and for those losing their minds over the flag? There’s a photo of her out there wrapped in the flag. get over it.
Oh, and one last thing, for you “we better find someone else because the media will rip HER to shreds” kind of folks, get serious. WHOEVER ends up being the nominee will get “palinized!”
The only difference is Sarah Palin is the first politician in a generation who can not only endure everything they sling at her, but THRIVE! Sarah is the only one who will actually fight back!
In other words, Sarah is our gal, and we are damned lucky she is!

Ah, but it’s Maria from The Sound of Music, which is even more fail on Newsweak’s part. You see, the way you solve a problem like Maria is to turn her loose.

I always enjoy a hot pic of Sarah and, for that matter, female objectification, but the picture and the title of the lead meme irritated me.
It’s going to take more than a pic of Sarah to make someone want to read an Evan Thomas article.
This garbage goes way beyond a typical MSM hitpiece on a conservative superstar.
But, consider the irony in that SARAH IS INFINITELY MORE POPULAR THAN NEWSWEEK (WHICH IS ON LIFE SUPPORT AS WE SPEAK AND WHICH LAID OFF EVEN MORE STAFF JUST LAST WEEK).

The hills are alive with the sound of MUSICCCCC! LOL!

(In my best Bobby Fleckman voice) If Sarah was greased and naked, on all fours with a dog collar around her neck, and a gloved hand reaching out for her to sniff, then I’d consider it sexist.

WRONG!!!!1!
You’re just wrong, lad.

I’d rather see Sarah wrapped in the flag she loves than to see Ayers stepping on the flag he hates.

Her head was photoshopped on a body… Those thighs look like Hillary’s….
CynicalOptimist on November 17, 2009 at 6:51 PM
You’re correct, my memory banks are not working today.
So, Palin as the troublesome singing nun. I have to work my way through that analogy.

Choosing the picture was lazy, of one piece with the lazy writing of the article. They couldn’t commission an original pic because they were rehashing the same old hit-tropes.
That and it is cheap to do it that way. It’s the magazine version of Leno. They don’t have to pay much to produce it, and it still makes them money.
How little does Newsweek pay it’s journalists if it’s willing to take such lazy, unoriginal pieces?
JeffWeimer on November 17, 2009 at 6:54 PM
Give me a break, there is a difference between a politician posing for a photo with a bunch of drunk college coeds and having a picture for another magazine being taken completely out of context by a MSM source for a hit piece.
Even photos that are fake are used against the woman (MSNBS anyone?) and they too focused on her appearance/sexuality. Coincedence? No, it is sexism, the kind that every raving feminist was supposedly against.

You don’t remember that one of Hillary and Bill in swimsuits on the beach… Sorry to bring up bad memories.
