Crist: I’d have voted for Porkulus
posted at 2:45 pm on November 17, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Rolling Stone’s Tim Dickinson has watched the Charlie Crist did-I-endorse-Porkulus-or-not with a bit of amusement and perhaps dismay. Dickinson interviewed Crist this spring for his rather unsurprisingly hostile look at conservatives within the Republican Party, hyperbolically titled “The GOP Jihad.” At the time, Dickinson wrote favorably of Crist:
Another GOP governor facing excommunication is Charlie Crist of Florida. By all reasonable standards, Crist is a right-of-center Republican who has established crossover appeal by taking a conservationist approach to global warming and the Everglades. But to GOP hard-liners, Crist is nothing but a warmed-over Democrat, a turncoat who appeared with Obama in support of the stimulus package. The governor was recently pilloried by GOP operatives — with obvious sexual innuendo — as “batting for the other team.” Even Jeb Bush’s son, George P., got into the act, giving Crist the hip-hop handle “D-Light.”
Many Republican strategists see such tactics as self-defeating. “You get guys like Crist who are tremendously popular, and they try to drum him out,” says Davis, the former NRCC chair. For his part, Crist is weighing a run for the Senate — where, he tells Rolling Stone, he would have given the president a fourth Republican vote on the stimulus bill. The GOP, he adds, must come up with something to say other than No.
“Don’t misunderstand me,” he says. “Sometimes ‘no’ is the right answer. But you have to have a vision for the future. You have to talk about what it is you want to do rather than knocking the other guy all the time.”
Dickinson posted the transcript of that question and answer yesterday at Rolling Stone:
Rolling Stone: Just a final question: Had you been in the Senate, would you have voted with the other Republicans for the stimulus package?
Crist: Absolutely.
Why did Dickinson decide to post this? He objected to Crist’s “going wobbly” on Porkulus, but it goes beyond wobbliness. Crist attempted to tell CNN’s Wolf Blitzer that he never endorsed it at all:
“I didn’t endorse it, I didn’t even have a vote on the darn thing.”
That’s not wobbliness, it’s a flat-out lie, as Dickinson’s transcript makes clear. Crist was busy helping Obama promote the bill in Florida, after all, while it was still politically popular. Its failure has made it toxic to Crist, but rather than admit that he was wrong for backing it, he’d rather try to rewrite history instead. Dickinson just reminds us that Crist’s support for this was not nebulous at all, but absolute.

Crist: I supported and took money.
Crist: I didn’t support it, it was bad. Very very bad.
Crist: I supported it so much, I would have voted for it.
Rubio: I don’t have to say anything other than I’m Marco Rubio, and I approve this message.

This, too, is a lie — at least, the implication that that was the sole GOP answer to the Porkulus bill. It was not. There was an alternative put forth and supported by more conservative Democrats and Republicans. It had a much more modest price tag and specifially targeted funds to jobs, not governments, and would have disbursed the funds in the immediate future rather than holding the bulk for an election year buyout as is the case with Porkulus. But Pelosi-Reid-Obama dismissed it out of hand: “I won.”

The Republicans had alternatives, the Democrats refused to listen.
Why is it that the definition of a moderate Republican is one who spouts Democratic talking points on command?
MarkTheGreat on November 17, 2009 at 3:05 PM
Obviously Crist never bothered reading the alternative stimulus proposals offered by the GOP that were shut out by Pelosi and Reid. So not only is the guy a RINO(or worse, a DIABLO), he can’t even bother to keep up with what his potential future colleagues in the Senate are doing.
Please GOP, I implore you. Dump this loser. Don’t make Palin and the Tea Partiers force your hand. Show some initiative and back the real conservative candidate.

I still think the GOP needs to stick with the FACT that the economy will recover despite porkulus(if the government stays the hell away).
Otherwise, we are simply setting ourselves up for a huge “I told you so!” from Obama once things start moving again, which was the whole premise of porkulus.

No, somewhere between national socialism and marxism. As was explained on Glenn’s show today, Stalin and Hitler both believed in the same overall concept except that Hitler didn’t like the “world government” idea. Hitler was a nationalist.
The libs think the center is someone who isn’t a nationalist or a globalist, but they still believe in socialism.

I agree 100%.
While we should keep hitting Obama in the short-term to maximize political damage before the election truly begins, we should also begin shifting to other topics (Afghanistan, Gitmo closing, School Choice, Deficit, etc.)
This way when the economy does recover, and it will eventually, we haven’t lost our only issue. He’ll be too busy defending himself over other major problems.

I agree. The moderation needs to be limited, if at all, to the so called social issues. But if a GOP candidate favors spending like a drunken sailor, tell him or her to change parties and begin curling up with ACORN and the unions.
Nothing about the Dem agenda of throwing money at economy-perverting and society-perverting makes any sense to me–and, more important, none of it’s working. Let me know how things have improved for blacks in the top 50 U.S. cities where Democrats controll virtually all the elected positions. Crickets.

PorkulusPropaganda worked. As least, apparently, for those who bleed blue. The rest of us who are paying attention to the facts know otherwise. If Porkulus appears to be working, it is because it is creating a new, and even worse, bubble. Worse because it is being created almost entirely by the government, supported by little beyond tax dollars which will soon run out and borrowed money which will probably end up killing off the dollar.
But, hey, the motto of the Obama/Pelosi/Reid Administration is, “If enough of the little people can be fooled until 2012… who cares?”

Slightly OT but read the story in the headlines where the SEIU is suing Allentown because a Boy Scout working on his Eagle Badge project dared clear a walking path that, presumably, should have been only accomplished by a union member.
This, dear friends, is why the nation is hurting. Volunteers are trashed by the unions because they did the shovel ready project without getting federal funding and union labor to do it.

I like how Democrats describe RINO types as “enormously popular”, even though they lose elections.McCain was enormously popular… with Democrats.
On the other hand, Sarah Palin is enormously unpopular with Democrats, though to believe them you have to imagine she is a giant ship anchor around the necks of Republicans.
Thus, they ought to be encouraging her they way they encouraged and supported McCain, knowing if she got nominated, the Republicans would lose.
But, somehow, they can’t bring themselves to follow such a tried and true strategy.
So, we have primary elections to determine who is enormously popular or not.
We’ll see how Crist fares against Rubio, eh?

I know Mitch Daniels here in Indiana, is one of the few Governors who has kept his state from going into the red..and he was not a big supporter of the stimulus so far as I know…but I do think that he took some of the funds to use for schools and highways. I am not really sure how much. I think a lot of Governors were kind of between a rock and hard place on this, because their state legislatures wanted the funds to cover shortfalls.

This is crazy. Charlie Crist isn’t a newcomer to politics. He has to know that lying is pretty easy to catch nowadays and very poisonous to campaigns. AND here’s what he’d do to make things better going forward.
