Crist: I’d have voted for Porkulus

Rolling Stone’s Tim Dickinson has watched the Charlie Crist did-I-endorse-Porkulus-or-not with a bit of amusement and perhaps dismay.  Dickinson interviewed Crist this spring for his rather unsurprisingly hostile look at conservatives within the Republican Party, hyperbolically titled “The GOP Jihad.” At the time, Dickinson wrote favorably of Crist:

Another GOP governor facing excommunication is Charlie Crist of Florida. By all reasonable standards, Crist is a right-of-center Republican who has established crossover appeal by taking a conservationist approach to global warming and the Everglades. But to GOP hard-liners, Crist is nothing but a warmed-over Democrat, a turncoat who appeared with Obama in support of the stimulus package. The governor was recently pilloried by GOP operatives — with obvious sexual innuendo — as “batting for the other team.” Even Jeb Bush’s son, George P., got into the act, giving Crist the hip-hop handle “D-Light.”

Many Republican strategists see such tactics as self-defeating. “You get guys like Crist who are tremendously popular, and they try to drum him out,” says Davis, the former NRCC chair. For his part, Crist is weighing a run for the Senate — where, he tells Rolling Stone, he would have given the president a fourth Republican vote on the stimulus bill. The GOP, he adds, must come up with something to say other than No.

“Don’t misunderstand me,” he says. “Sometimes ‘no’ is the right answer. But you have to have a vision for the future. You have to talk about what it is you want to do rather than knocking the other guy all the time.”

Dickinson posted the transcript of that question and answer yesterday at Rolling Stone:

Rolling Stone: Just a final question: Had you been in the Senate, would you have voted with the other Republicans for the stimulus package?

Crist: Absolutely.

Why did Dickinson decide to post this?  He objected to Crist’s “going wobbly” on Porkulus, but it goes beyond wobbliness.  Crist attempted to tell CNN’s Wolf Blitzer that he never endorsed it at all:

“I didn’t endorse it, I didn’t even have a vote on the darn thing.”

That’s not wobbliness, it’s a flat-out lie, as Dickinson’s transcript makes clear.  Crist was busy helping Obama promote the bill in Florida, after all, while it was still politically popular.  Its failure has made it toxic to Crist, but rather than admit that he was wrong for backing it, he’d rather try to rewrite history instead.  Dickinson just reminds us that Crist’s support for this was not nebulous at all, but absolute.

Whatever you’re smoking it must be awesomely awesome stuff.

558,000 more people hit the streets in October according to the BLS website.

The largest areas hit were construction, manufacturing and retail. In case the full import of that doesn’t make it through your thick head, this is when retail hires masses of people for the holiday rush.

Crist is toast as are all the Bozombies.

So, invasion is ok with you?

Opposing CIR and amnesty is the only important thing.

The borders thing is kind of a side show issue.

When “conservatives” stop proping up everyone who feeds them all the right lines with no record to back it up.

Squid Shark on November 17, 2009 at 3:52 PM

You need to find a story that you can live with, Squid. You’ve got three different versions in this thread alone. We get that you are invested in Crist…that’s great. (You guys share a tanning bad back in the day, or what?)

As for Rubio, you seem to be bothered by him mostly because he is opposing Crist. You don’t think he has a record, or you don’t like his record, or you think no one else likes his record, blah, blah, blah.

Pick one you like and stick with it.

Any Republican who tries to get brownie points and look cool with Rolling Stone and it’s readers is too stupid to breathe. This is Crist’s “Monkey Business” with Donna Rice in his arms, or looking stupid in a tank.

Marcus on November 17, 2009 at 4:23 PM

If Crist goes to the Senate, he and Kerry can form the “We were for it before we were against it” caucus.

Kafir on November 17, 2009 at 4:40 PM

Keep digging yourself in a hole, Crist. Oh for Christs sake, please remember to turn off the tanning bed. You look like a tall oompa loompa.

Did this guy fall asleep on South Beach? Somebody mentioned that Crist will be toast. I think he already is.

Hummer53 on November 17, 2009 at 4:54 PM

Exactly waht I said before and now there is proof. Had he been in the Senate, he would have voted for the damn thing. He and Scozzafava.

This is why we prefer Rubio, admittedly an unknown wildcard, over Crist because at least he has been consistant against the Presidents destructive economic agenda. Crist is your typical opportunistic politician always looking for coattails to ride on.

And that is your prerogative. At least you acknowledge that Rubio does not have a whole lotta record to ride on, that puts you heads and shoulders above the Rubes.

I know Marco and I know Crist, I have watched them both pretty intently over the last 10 years. I will still go with Crist, I know both devils and I still prefer him.

Squid Shark on November 17, 2009 at 5:32 PM

Just another example of how Crist is more like a democrat. Just keep repeating the lie pretending the truth doesn’t exist.

JeffinOrlando on November 17, 2009 at 6:06 PM

There is a very good reason for people steering clear of Charlie Crist. I am a reader of Hillbuzz. The men who run the blog are Hillary supporters and yes they are gay. They love Sarah Palin and they actually went out and campaigned for McCain after Hillary was defeated in the primaries. In fact there are a number of Democrats, now turned Independents who are of the same ilk as Hillbuzz. (these are decent enough men even though I disagree with the lifestyle).

Now these men have pointed out that the DNC want to see Charlie Crist foisted into the spotlight so that they can shoot him down. Crist is a fool if he thinks that the DNC does not have the dirt on him. There is the matter of the Iguana club prior to Crist getting married. It is very damaging stuff and if the RNC is stupid enough to push Crist in any of the campaigns then the DNC will come out guns blazing. Crist is political suicide for Republicans.

Even though I am an outsider, I never could understand why Crist made it to the Governor post. The reason that I say that is that as Attorney General or whatever his previous role happened to be during the Schindler vs. Schiavo fiasco, Crist enabled the lawful murder of Terri Schiavo at the hands of her estranged husband. He was one of several enablers, even while Jeb Bush was pushing to try and stop that action taking place. The biggest enabler of all was the RINO and corrupt George Greer.

Tell that to my wife, self-employed for 20 years, unemployed the last two, and not a dime of unemployment benefits – ever!

And no, I don’t have family medical coverage. She pays for hers from lifetime savings, to the tune of $800 a month.

BB: another hopelessly fantasizing dipsh*t!

Sweet_Thang on November 17, 2009 at 6:23 PM

He tacitly voted for it by all but unzipping Obowa’s pants in front of crowds.

SouthernGent on November 17, 2009 at 6:31 PM

Lets see Crist If I was a Senator I would have voted Yes for Stimulus even though it only stimulated Government ‘temporary’ jobs, gave a bunch of money to Unions, and the majority of it doesn’t actually kick in this year but is spread out versus Rubio If I was a Senator I would have voted No for Stimulus because it only stimulated Government ‘temporary’ jobs, gave a bunch of money to Unions, and the majority of it doesn’t actually kick in this year but is spread out.

Crist I support Cap and Trade versus Rubio I don’t support Cap and Trade.

I can see why the wonderful David Frum who is actively trying to say ‘Conservatives Cant Govern’ doesn’t want Rubio to win the primary.

First, anyone who supported loves Hillary and Loves Sarah Palin is shallow and probably should not be a purveyor of informed political opinion.

Second, he became governor because he was a good attorney general. WRT to Terri Schiavo, HE DID HIS JOB! He followed the laws of Florida, which was more than the Governor seemed to be able to do.

How come i never can seem to find any politician who will actuall state his or her position on something
then when caught later on

still honestly state the same position..

Hell even the liberals do this now..
Their all pro gay (until they are confronted by a bunch of pissed off pro (regular marriage) citizens who just happen to be voters..

then all of a sudden its ohh err uhh i really meant..

Or you get the other extreem where the politician says he or she believes in american values (meaning depends upon which group the scum bag is speaking too at the moment)

then after being elected and finding out how much money there is in politics suddendly says

Ohh well my constituants also wanted me to vote my concsience..

How about this all of you scum bag politiicans

We voted for you
to represent our values (NOT YOURS)..

Now you pledged that you believed and would vote the way we desired…

So if you cannot do this then
WE ALL WANT A RECALL…

Because all of you stink to high heaven

I agree Bleeds Blue. Thanks to the corruption of the Democrats. The Elite Royal Rich Democrat Thugs have increased their shares of the Economy.

… Thanks to Obama.

Yes. Soon we will all be employed by the Dems: unfortunately AS SLAVES.

Goodbye Charlie.

Sapwolf on November 17, 2009 at 7:00 PM

Rubio has to defeat Charlie in the primary. Or else, the Dems will make sure that Charlie shall win to further humiliate Republicans in the Senate … Dems need more DIABLOs in like Specter (former R), Snowe and Collins … to legitimize their destruction of the economy.

I love your passion but disagree on this picky point. I want my representative to vote based on his values and not have to poll his constituents on every issue. That being said, I want that representative to honestly state, during his campaign, exactly what those values are and commit to holding to them so that we can cast our votes for him in confidence. If they renege or flip-flop, we should have quick, fair and uncomplicated recall procedures to fire his sorry a$$.
