Video: Palin on Oprah

posted at 7:58 pm on November 16, 2009 by Allahpundit

People want to talk about it, so here’s your thread. I don’t think the whole interview’s online but the Daily Beast clipped and compiled what it calls the seven best moments. Click the image to watch. She must have done well because even normally inhospitable media outlets like TNR are giving her a grudging thumbs up. More from the Beast, whose founder sneered at Palin as recently as this morning:

Never has Sarah Palin appeared so comfortable in her own skin on national television as she did Monday afternoon on The Oprah Winfrey Show. She spoke in clear, easily diagrammable sentences—none of those weird locutions about Putin rearing his head somewhere in the stratosphere over the Aleutian Islands. She was approachable and full of pep. And even with that percussive laugh—the raucous call of an exotic plumed bird during mating season, perhaps—she displayed an appealingly mordant sense of humor.

Normally I’d tell you to follow the link, but this is the Beast, after all, so it’s all downhill from there. An intriguing footnote: CBS has its own poll of Palin’s favorables out tonight, and contrary to the polarizing numbers in WaPo’s poll, there seem to be a lot of people still making up their minds about her. This week can only help.

There wasn’t anything “bitter” about it at all.

At this point, I am sure that Palin’s greatest regret was getting Levi Johnston to appear with her at the GOP convention.

Chekote on November 16, 2009 at 9:17 PM

Well at least she admits that she made a mistake by letting Couric get the better of her through annoyance. Will her fanboys admit she made a mistake too?

Speedwagon82 on November 16, 2009 at 8:42 PM

I think she made a mistake on a few of the questions.

But everybody does and that had no effect on the election polls.

Who cares?

I do know she would NEVER had let KSM in the country and he would already be hung after a military tribunal gave him a thumbs down.

And, she NEVER would have bowed to the Japanese emperor because she’d have the sense to hire people who have international protocol experience.

She also would have sent 100,000 more troops to get the freekin job done in Afghanistan while having Def. Sec. Liz Cheney convince the Paki’s to hit them hard from the East.

Sarah’s song these day is this.

txag92 on November 16, 2009 at 8:59 PM

I feel the same way. The problem is 2012 may be too early. I really wish that she hadn’t have had to resign as governor. She would have had 6 years of experience as governor had she not. That being said, I like Palin as a person. She’s real and charming. Is she perfect? No. But she would be a good candidate in the future, maybe after 12. If she does get the nomination, she should pick a running mate with many, many years in office. Paul Ryan or Mitch Daniels, or maybe even Bobby Jindal, would be good. Maybe the governors would be better as nominees since they would have that “outside the beltway” vibe.

On that subject, why the HELL does The Daily Beast have “porn” in quotes? It’s porn!!!!! It’s been porn for over 50 years (in Playboy’s case anyway). Now all of a sudden, since it’s Palin (oh that idiot woman!), it must be “softcore centerfold.” These people make me sick. I don’t even think the woman’s presidential material at this point, with all due respect to her, and I’m incensed by their trashing of her. They need to find a hobby or something!

Sharr on November 16, 2009 at 9:27 PM

I thought she did really great. I hope she develops a better answer for the “why did you quit as governor” question. She quit because liberals turned her life into a circus and were keeping her from doing her job. Law suits, investigations, swarms of people digging for dirt. She quit because the other side made it impossible for her to effectively do her job.

So far, the current dufus is making the Carter years almost seem like the good ole days… almost.

But I really don’t see things getting better for Obambi, especially with a new major screwup occurring practically every day.

How many people usually watch Oprah day to day?
I suppose we’ll get the number from Drudge one of these days.

It’s conventional wisdom that it’s tough to defeat a sitting president, but with O in the office, that’ll change in ’12.
If the economy is still messed up and unemployment is above 9%, he’s done. Period.
I don’t know who will be the POTUS in ’13, but it won’t be O.

The problem for Palin as I see it is many people like and respect her and agree with her they simply don’t think she can win. tha thas been the aim of the media from day one. To make it appear she can’t win. Political campaigns is about momentuem. Many people will back the man/woman they feel has the best shot of winning with their money and time. Why invest precious capital in someone that has no shot?

Therefor all Palin has to”do” in the coming three years is show Americans that she can win. This is why the media blew up NY23 results like they did. They wanted to protray the TEA party as unable to win therefore suck their oxogen out of the movement. How to change this preception? optimisim is the best policy here. If Palin goes out and says yes she can win and win big people will start to believe it once the polls show it more and more will come over just like Obama once Obama proved he could win and hillary proved she couldn’t the supporters if a life time switched in a blink of an eye. Same thing happened with Dean. It wasn’t the scream so much as the lose that doomed dean

This why she needs to hold off for a cycle and become the “Party Whip” Start steering the party back on corse. She does not have to be president to make a huge impact. She doing it right now.
Why would she risk this to prematurely run for President? There are some great voices “Krauthammer” of the party who still want her to take time to develop and grow. Honestly we don’t want an “Obama”. We want a leader, she got what it takes.
-She might want to take up the offer with Hillary for that cup of coffee. Wouldn’t that just get the WH’s panties in a wad…

I think you are spot on. I think many tactics used against her could backfire in a big way if she steps out there over the next few years and shows as well as she apparently did today. It isn’t near as insurmountable as polls might suggest it to be. They’ve created the notion that Palin is a bubblehead. She can clear that bar for sure, because she is far from that. It really all comes down to the extent she clears that low bar, and how quickly Obama’s policies prove to be the disaster they are to the public.

According to the Washington Post “multiple former McCain [campaign] officials” are disputing, and indeed trashing, Sarah Palin’s account of the campaign, as presented in her new book, Going Rogue, which is already a best-seller. As John has noted, nearly all of these officials have chosen to remain anonymous.

But according to USA Today, one high-level campaign official has gone on the record to call Palin’s book “a good account.” That official is Senator John McCain.

As far as Dean went, he’s a total jerk and a hole, first of all. The guy can’t buy a likeable personality.
I don’t think a Dean/Palin comparison is very good.
The media did a hack job on her cause they got lucky with 1 little shrewdly edited take with Couric.
You could make the argument that Palin had a bad day.

Was Couric an anomaly or not? If not, she’s got a good chance.

Funny thing is, I’ve never really gotten the impression she was stupid. The Couric thing just distorted everything, much to CBS’s delight.
But if that’s a bs view, it can’t last. She’ll beat it.
I’ve seen people say they are changing their minds about her already.

When I saw Obama talk to O Reilly about foreign policy last year, I seriously was alarmed by what he said and how clueless he was.

I’ve never felt that watching her.
I don’t think people realize how PISSED OFF this country is.
It’s a big mistake to not take her seriously.

Mitt, huck, T-paw all still must go thru the meat grinding of Obama opposition research huh i mean the media. my comment was not so much on quailifications and/or personilities. I agree with you on those. I was talking more on the actions and reactions to crowds or group human behavior. the reason there are bubbles and busts in the stock market, the reason for landslides in politics etc can all vbe traced to group behavior. Once enough of the group thinks a certain way most of the rest of the group joins that view to fit in. At the moment the groupthink is she is can not win therefore most people don’t think she is quailified. If she can show that she can win than those same people will make up their own coginitive reasons to why she is quailified. Wether she is or isn’t really isn’t has important as the belief that she is. From studying her record I think she is reagradless of the groupthink. The quailifications only matter to get that first push into the stampede. Afte that quailifiactions personility etc take a back seat to the group behavior. Reagan one once enough people felt safe to vote their beliefs…etc

bush lost for one reason and one reason only his “read my lips pledge” once bush lost the trust of the voters they stopped listening to him. they no longer help him in respect and could have cared less. It is ironic that his son started to lose support in the sameway with the WMD theme. his failure to find those WMD caused a break in trust. Trust is very important in leaders. I personally think that is the reason that Obama is losing support at a record pace. He ran as a bluedog dem in the battlegrounds and an ultra liberal in the deep blue states. Those in the battle ground trusted him to govern has a bluedog instead he is showing his liberal side.

TRUST do what you say you are going to do.

If enough people see her this week, (millions), and she’s good –no “uh’s”– people will see her as electable.

It’s not like a lot of people trust the MSM anymore anyway.
Most people could figure out the MSM desperately wanted Obama to win, and hated her.

If they see a good well prepared Sarah Palin they’ll put 2 and 2 together and know the media bs’d them.

The libs in the media constantly put forward this whole “SHE’S STOOOOOOPID!!” thing. Ya, it’s inevitably going to fall apart once people see/hear her more.

Since you brought up voice… I think Sarah could use a voice coach. I am a woman and even I can see how listening to an untrained woman’s voice can be annoying.

I believe Hillary had a voice coach. I’m certain Katie Couric has had one.

Part of people not taking Sarah seriously is her voice. And I don’t mean her accent. It is her pitch.

If I was seeking public office that is one of the first things I would check out. A voice coach.

If Sarah gets that little screech out of her voice in public it would go a long way to getting people to take what she says more seriously.

yeah i noticed that also but was thinking that in once case it was about genrally running for VP. and in the other it was at thte moment of the call. As in she polled the family when the vetting started but when she got the call it was just her and Todd’s decsion.

Allah has been drilling that home too; the whole stupid idea. I swear he watches and believes everything msnbc says about her.

B Man on November 16, 2009 at 10:06 PM

Agreed on your post. As far as Allah remember that groupthink works more for big city dewllers where they have to do the whole groupthink more often to sustain their tight packed rat like life styles. Groupthink is very important in big cities it aviods all those riots and stuff. Flyover country is different and more independent because there is more space and less people.

Palin/Prejean 2012!!! Their strategy for dealing with tough, real-world issues would be two-fold: Palin obfuscates with some down-home, folksy jibber-jabber while Prejean dazzles the masses with a fine display of her fancy finger-work. Imagine the campaign appearances….they would finally gets some use out of all that pageant waving they learned.

Palin/Prejean: The Family Values Team.

Project much? You do realize that “Onan” means “masturbation” in several languages?

I’m sure that’s why he or she picked the name.

beachgirlusa on November 16, 2009 at 11:07 PM

If I was seeking public office that is one of the first things I would check out. A voice coach.

Yes. I agree 100%.

Bob's Kid on November 16, 2009 at 11:09 PM

Intelligent, sincere, witty, spirited, wholesome, strong, self made, beautiful, charming, honest, down to earth.
Conservative.
Conservative.
God, I love that woman.
Ladies and gentleman- Sarah Palin, the next President of the United States.

Allah has Palinitis.
A common problem found in liberals. Hm.

Yeah, some voice training wouldn’t be the worst thing for her. A great politician and leader must also be a great orator, so it would not be disingenuous for her.

I tell you, she is going to be the next Ronald Reagan.
Maybe even better.
The left knows it and knows it deep.

I remember the feeling when Carter exited and Reagan came in.
It was like Springtime after a long, drab, miserable winter.

that is just what we need! but we’re not out of the woods yet; we have to keep our powder dry an keep the heat turned up to 11.

p.s: mixing and matching metaphors is fun! ;-)

Definitely, beachgirl.
The Carter years were awful.
This era of Obama is proving to be worse.

Bill Blizzard on November 16, 2009 at 11:31 PM

Well, we haven’t exactly been on a roll with the establishment crowd of Republicans lately.
And I’m not just talking about on a roll with winning elections, but rather helping the country.
The aftermath of the Contract with America was very disappointing, in terms of a missed opportunity to reverse the miserable legacy of the left.
The country is in pretty desperate straits.
We need an unvarnished conservative.

Now making sex tapes for your boyfriend is a family value? Interesting.

Chekote on November 16, 2009 at 11:57 PM

Since you brought up voice… I think Sarah could use a voice coach. I am a woman and even I can see how listening to an untrained woman’s voice can be annoying.

I love Sarah’s voice.
I don’t want her to change a thing!

I believe Hillary had a voice coach.

Really?
Ever heard one of her shrill, shrieking tirades?
It will have you grabbing for the nearest knitting needles to poke out your eardrums.

Part of people not taking Sarah seriously is her voice. \petunia on November 16, 2009 at 10:23 PM

Her voice, her style of delivery and her plain-spoken views are all pitch perfect.
Again, she shouldn’t change a thing and any attempts to do so now are no better than the stifling the McCain camp did to her.
Let Sarah be Sarah!
One of her biggest assets is her ability to be natural in all things.

Barack Obama gets away with his crappy speaking.
Sarah can speak rings around him and will.

Prejean is a sweet girl, but she’s a true moron and–let’s face it–kind of a whore when you get past the “sweet, Christian girl” facade.
The last thing Conservatives need right now is a bimbette like Prejean on a “Family Values” ticket!

Hey Sweater Puppy, how are you? Funny, I thought of you just the other day. I was giving a few bucks to a homeless fellow and I noticed that he was eating Manwich right out of the can! A noxious stench was emanating from him and he seemed to be humming some sort of country tune.

Anywho…how’s the dog catcher?

FYI, you don’t have to capitalize the word dad when used in that manner. It’s such a shame that in these modern times the commoners still can’t get access to a good education.

Good4Onan on November 17, 2009 at 12:12 AM

Sarah unfiltered is scaring the begeezus out of the progressivists. I hope I don’t sound too mean when I say….good! And really good for America. I want my country back from the slimy grasps of the Chicago Marxists and their Coastie pals. And she is just the person to make it happen! I’m in! Go Cuda!

If nothing else, Palin’s appearance on Oprah gave David Letterman something to masturbate to before he came out to do his monologue Monday night.

jon1979 on November 17, 2009 at 1:00 AM

Any GOP is a long-shot in 12. It’s hard to unseat a sitting president.

AnninCA on November 16, 2009 at 9:22 PM

You do realize that Bill Clinton was the first democrat since FDR who won re-election, right?

While REPUBLICAN Presidents are a pretty good bet to be re-elected, based on past history, democrats are not.

You see, every now and then, the American people get stupid and think, why not, why not elect a democrat? Then about halfway through the first term, these same people wake and go OMG! WHAT HAVE WE DONE!

The ONLY REASON Bill Clinton won re-electing is he had Dick Morris twisting his arm and dragging him kicking and screaming to the middle after he lost the majority the democrats had held for 40 years! Morris basically told him to smile a lot, and sign everything the Republicans sent his way!

gary4205 on November 17, 2009 at 1:13 AM

You do realize that Bill Clinton was the first democrat since FDR who won re-election, right?

And never got 50% of the vote in either election thanks to Ross Perot.

Perot was quite effective in splitting the Republican vote.

John Ziegler:

“For many reasons, this is by far the best book and greatest literary achievement by a political figure in my lifetime.”

I strongly believe that if every Republican primary voter reads this book, Sarah Palin will win the 2012 nomination in a landslide, whether she wants it or not.

This is why talk of Sarah, or anyone else, starting a third
party is silly.

BTW, the RINOs were so pissed when Reagan won the nomination in 1980, they ran their guy, John Anderson as an indie. It’s why Ronnie only got 50.9 percent of the popular vote, even though he had an electoral landslide of biblical proportions.
