Video: Palin on Oprah

posted at 7:58 pm on November 16, 2009 by Allahpundit

People want to talk about it, so here’s your thread. I don’t think the whole interview’s online but the Daily Beast clipped and compiled what it calls the seven best moments. Click the image to watch. She must have done well because even normally inhospitable media outlets like TNR are giving her a grudging thumbs up. More from the Beast, whose founder sneered at Palin as recently as this morning:

Never has Sarah Palin appeared so comfortable in her own skin on national television as she did Monday afternoon on The Oprah Winfrey Show. She spoke in clear, easily diagrammable sentences—none of those weird locutions about Putin rearing his head somewhere in the stratosphere over the Aleutian Islands. She was approachable and full of pep. And even with that percussive laugh—the raucous call of an exotic plumed bird during mating season, perhaps—she displayed an appealingly mordant sense of humor.

Normally I’d tell you to follow the link, but this is the Beast, after all, so it’s all downhill from there. An intriguing footnote: CBS has its own poll of Palin’s favorables out tonight, and contrary to the polarizing numbers in WaPo’s poll, there seem to be a lot of people still making up their minds about her. This week can only help.

When Obama told the press to lay off his kids, they did. Obama made sure they knew there would be hell to pay if they failed to obey, and they knew that Obama and the Democrats had the ability to vaporize anyone who dared not obey.

On the other hand, it was open season on Palin’s kids. Everybody knew they could get away with anything and everything, and they were right.

The interview lived up to its hype, which is unique in this day and age.

They really did talk about darn near everything.

Sarah got a chance to soften her stance on several hot issues, including abortion.

It was a terrific interview. I think more like this will pull in moderates.

There is going to be a recovery for Sarah Palin. It’s just a matter of extent. She has been lampooned to such an extent that there is no way she’d live down to people’s expectations. You hear it in casual conversations. I’ve come in contact with many people who write her off as the caricature she’s been made to be. They may consider themselves unpersuadable, but I don’t think that’s always the case. This thing has potential to turn around in a big way if she can build on this and talk policy in a number of subjects.

Personally, I’m not happy that she resigned as governor because I think she may need a more established record. Maybe I’m wrong though. As it stands now, she’s still ahead of Romney and Huckabee in my book because she stands on principles and they more or less match up with mine.

HornetSting on November 16, 2009 at 8:35 PM

I saw the entire interview on TV (don’t normally watch Oprah). Thought it was pretty good. The only thing that was irritating was the commercial breaks every 3-4 minutes.

Don’t know if that is the norm for the Oprah, maybe she figured she’d be having a few million more viewers and could rack up some dough with all the commercial breaks.

The interview itself was probably only 20 minutes…

Ann, you’ve been complaining about this all day. The reason Sarah is the subject du jour on the Leftist Blogs is because she is their primary target. They are not going to eviserate their “Messiah”, but they’ve called Sarah and her family everything but children of God. the Daily Beast clipped and compiled what it calls the seven best moments.

They usually take a neutral stance regarding all things Palin, right?

BadgerHawk on November 16, 2009 at 8:38 PM

I watched it this afternoon — the first time I’ve watched Oprah in well over a decade (which is why, of course, she agreed to book Palin; it’s the ratings, stupid). Anyhoo, Oprah was cordial but distant. She did not want to like Sarah Palin, but it was pretty clear as the interview went on that Oprah was saying to herself, “Oh sh*t, she really is a down-to-earth, decent person.” Oprah kind of had a deer-in-the-headlights look for most of the interview. She could feel herself being pulled into Palin’s warmth, grace, and humble honesty, and she really did not know what to do with it.

Rational Thought on November 16, 2009 at 8:12 PM

Totally agree, RT! (BTW, love your posts!)
What really got to Oprah was when Sarah took the time to praise her at the end of the show.
Oprah looked like she was going to wet her pants like “Oh, sh*t! This lady is so gracious and charming!”

Sapwolf on November 16, 2009 at 8:44 PM

A lefty take on the interview:

We’re sure that Sarah Palin had hoped that adding in some stories with famous names attached in her new book, Going Rogue, would garner her some attention.

Hard to sell a book these days that isn’t filled with gossip or vampires!

But, it seems that her mission has backfired as while she made have attempted to ruffle some feathers with her book, really all she did was prove she is an idiot!

Don’t you just love when that happens?

Pathetic Palin first took a stab at Alec Baldwin and her guest appearance with him on SNL. According to Palin, she had other ideas than the one chosen for her skit, but they were all refuted and turned down by the actor. She makes it sound like Alec is a some big, bad bully, when truly, her ideas sucked and they told her so! She wanted to add a line in reference to Baldwin’s supposed claim that if George Bush won his second term in office, he would leave the country.

Problem is, and as Alec’s rep, Matt Hiltzik explained to the press, this never happened.

He says:

“They nixed the joke because the underlying premise just wasn’t true, because he had never said [he was leaving the country]. It’s a complete fallacy. But then, once Palin knew that, after telling her [it wasn't true], she said, ‘Well, let’s say it anyway,’ like she needed it to be true.”

Of course! She couldn’t come off looking like an imbecile – again!

But perhaps the biggest display of her idiocy is portrayed in her infamous Katie Couric interview. Palin claims that she was badgered thought the interview, which is a pretty hefty claim against Katie. However, her rep, who is also Matt Hiltzik, had only one thing to say:

“The interview speaks for itself.”

It most certainly does!

How’s that massive hole you are digging for yourself there, Palin?

It reminded me of what President Bush said when he was asked how he dealt with the heavy burdens of office, like visiting with families who’d lost their soldier son/husband/daughter/wife in Iraq or Afghanistan, “I lean on the Almighty and Laura.”

AnninCA on November 16, 2009 at 9:00 PM

I can’t wait for the Babs interviews tomm, now. Oh, and of course, for the book itself!

lansing quaker on November 16, 2009 at 8:53 PM

I imagine all those interviewing her this week are looking for the “gotcha” question which will played out on SNL and then eventually the talking point of next week’s news cycles. At the head of that line is Bill O’Reilly. He is dying to be The One who gets it.

The very reason I’m a Palin fan is that she’s a rock-solid conservative. If I thought she were a squish she’d have no more appeal to me than Romney.

I can’t stand squish.

pugwriter on November 16, 2009 at 8:59 PM

Me too. I was referring to Ann and her jello six pack of values and ideals.
I want to hear Sarah’s stance on immigration. HER stance, not ‘maverick’s.

HornetSting on November 16, 2009 at 9:02 PM

don’t think he was calling me a liberal. At least I hope he wasn’t insulting me. Also, I like Palin. I just don’t think she’s electable in 2012.

txag92 on November 16, 2009 at 8:59 PM

No not calling you out simply an observation on the outtake you posted. The post you cut and paste sounded like an insane person talking. I did not think it was your thoughts

unseen on November 16, 2009 at 9:02 PM

Yep, and that’s what she’s going to have to do. Get out from under the labels.

a capella on November 16, 2009 at 8:59 PM

She didn’t bother me on that issue in the election, even. She’s not rigid. I think she has bigger appeal than just a small base.

AnninCA on November 16, 2009 at 9:02 PM

Another random point from this interview:

I’m glad Palin brought up her private e-mail being hacked by /b/ tards. It’s on Oprah.com (I think), but that story tragically got little play all while being wholly intrusive and ridiculous.

lansing quaker on November 16, 2009 at 9:02 PM

AnninCA on November 16, 2009 at 9:00 PM

Well at the least “gateway porn”

unseen on November 16, 2009 at 9:03 PM

Txag is a buddy of mine. She has her opinion and I respect that. I am a big Palin sup but calling everyone a troll or otherwise here if they don’t feel the same way is a turn off.

bazil9 on November 16, 2009 at 9:03 PM

Isn’t that Chrissy Matthews phrase? Well the thread is about 2 women, I guess a third wouldn’t hurt.

Hog Wild

LOL

beachgirlusa on November 16, 2009 at 9:04 PM

never mind :)

bazil9 on November 16, 2009 at 9:04 PM

It was a terrific interview. I think more like this will pull in moderates.

AnninCA on November 16, 2009 at 8:27 PM

If Sarah can win over AnninCA, then she’ll win the Presidency.

Sapwolf on November 16, 2009 at 9:06 PM

I didn’t have time to watch. I’m under the weather today too.

sherry on November 16, 2009 at 9:01 PM

I dunno. I think ABC is going to be very careful (including dealing with O and Babs) about not looking biased/gotcha when that’s a huge linchpin in Palin’s book: the “gotcha” media.

Granted, the nutroots will salivate over any perceived “inconsistency” and overplay it like a busted Lipps, Inc. 8-track, but that will always be their M.O.

lansing quaker on November 16, 2009 at 9:06 PM

By “soften” I think she means that Palin was able to frame her pro-life stance on her own terms (and to a massive audience) for once, without being pre-qualified with “ZEALOT!” or “ANTI-CONTRACEPTION!” (an oft repeated 2008 leftist lie) boogeymen.

lansing quaker on November 16, 2009 at 8:56 PM

Yes, Palin prefers to live the sermon rather than preach it, if I get your meaning. That is my preference, also. But that wasn’t how Ann’s post read to me. If I was mistaken, then I was mistaken.

Sapwolf on November 16, 2009 at 9:06 PM

She has more to prove to me, but I do definitely like her. And I know as well as anyone that plays a much bigger part in voting than most people admit.

AnninCA on November 16, 2009 at 9:07 PM

…there seem to be a lot of people still making up their minds about her. This week can only help.

Ya don’t say.

That’s why I follow her. I believe she is a libertarian and a conservative AND she has the courage to lead that direction.

Sapwolf on November 16, 2009 at 9:09 PM

Sarah will lose the pro-choice women, no matter what. They are worried about rolling back those rights.

BUT, if that isn’t a top voting concern, then she’ll attract moderates by simply not being judgmental or over-the-top on that issue.

She wasn’t.

AnninCA on November 16, 2009 at 9:09 PM

Wrong, I know quite a few R women that vote for PL candidates that are PC. You mean the left.

HornetSting on November 16, 2009 at 9:02 PM

Yes. And I’d like to hear here flesh out her ideas on climate change, too. I thought she was a little too accommodating to the nutjobs during the campaign. I hope that was McCain camp rhetoric, too.

pugwriter on November 16, 2009 at 9:11 PM

Did you happen to notice the comments after all of the clips?? There are a few and these people are so seemingly disgusted with Palin which makes me know they are SO very scared of her…HA!

Ltlgeneral64 on November 16, 2009 at 9:11 PM

“hear here

Ugh.

By this, I take it you mean the single-issue pro-choicers.

lansing quaker on November 16, 2009 at 9:12 PM

There wasn’t anything “bitter” about it at all.

AnninCA on November 16, 2009 at 8:41 PM

Except for her “dig” at Couric calling her “The perky one”.

bazil9 on November 16, 2009 at 9:11 PM

Yes, I mean the ones who make that the central focus of their vote. But that would also apply to any GOP candidate. She can’t worry about that segment.

AnninCA on November 16, 2009 at 9:12 PM

She’s right, too. That is porn.

AnninCA on November 16, 2009 at 9:00 PM

She’s in a position where she can call that situation as she sees it. You put 99% of grandmothers in that spot, where their pseudo-son-in-law is planning to show his junk on playgirl, and they’re going to have something to say about it. Whether you call it porn or not has absolutely zero to do with it.

stldave on November 16, 2009 at 9:13 PM

is not Palin that is divisive but her haters.
